As I write this, it happens to be the time of Remembrance
Sunday and I am very aware of the conflict all around the
world which is manifesting itself in so many different ways.
In our Country alone we have many demonstrations from people who are
finding life extremely hard in this time of economic difficulty, and many
families who have lost loved ones in the armed forces all over the world – but
what has really caught my attention is the conflict about whether our
sportsmen should be allowed to wear a poppy on their sports outfits to
commemorate the fallen.
I say it has 'caught my attention', because this is a once a year Appeal – so
what about the other 364 days? Do we forget the trauma facing members of
the Armed Forces and their families when injured personnel return from such
places as Afghanistan with life-changing injuries?
Support for the Royal British Legion is highlighted at this particular time of
year – but they have to keep going for the rest of the year giving lifelong
support to all Service personnel and their families, from Afghanistan and
previous conflicts. The Legion is the nation's custodian of Remembrance and
they do so much for the families of those who serve, those on active service
and all who have served in the past.
But of course, all Charities are kept going by so many people who give so
generously towards the needs of others, and by the people who give of their
time to help others.
If we now think about our own community in Ickleford – we are so fortunate
with our surroundings and our village. But we have to care for one another,
help one another and be aware of the needs of others as well.
Christianity is based on loving our neighbour as ourselves and as Christmas
approaches it brings about thoughts of 'peace and goodwill to all people'.
I pray that you all may receive God's blessing at this special time of year,
when we rejoice in the birth of Jesus Christ, God's Son,
and may find, and give to others, this peace and goodwill.
A happy and Blessed Christmas to you all.

Dear Resident,
First I would like to welcome Mrs Pauline Martin as the new Clerk to Ickleford Parish Council. We were
very fortunate to have a number of very high-calibre applicants for this position, and I am confident that,
as the successful applicant, Pauline will be a great asset to the whole community.
We also welcome Mrs Sue Dury as Head of Ickleford Primary School. Sue has a very hard act to follow
in taking over from Pat Salmon who served our younger residents so effectively for many years. We
wish Sue all the very best and thank Pat for her magnificent contributions to the education of our
children.
Some residents have commented that our PCSO has not been very visible over the summer. This was
mainly due to reduced shift patterns associated with family commitments during the holiday period.
However, we have asked for a more robust log of PCSO activities, and the Clerk will be reviewing this
with the police to ensure that we continue to get value for money for the PCSO who is co-funded by
residents of Ickleford. A few points to note: all contact details for the police can be found on the Parish
Council website; the police will be hosting a series of 'Street Meets' in the village to show their availability
to residents; PCSOs now have the authority to issue parking tickets – we don't want you to be penalised,
so please ensure that you park legally and safely.
Councillor Sam Taylor has made excellent progress with the potential new Youth Club for Ickleford, with
several volunteers to run it, and the Sports and Recreation Club kindly offering a venue. The Club is
mainly targeting those in the 11-16 age range, and if you know anyone who might be interested please
ask them to contact Sam.
There has been little progress on safety measures at Cadwell Bridge. We advised Hertfordshire
Highways that all five proposed options had issues that were not acceptable to residents. Highways
suggested they will bring forward a new scheme which would provide heightened awareness of the
dangers of this area. Any recommendations will be subject to full and proper consultations.
There is more promising news on the renovation of 'Little Park' to provide allotments. NHDC are
drawing up a lease to transfer the land to the Parish Council, Cllr Crowe has successfully applied for a
Lottery Grant to fund the preparation of the site, and quotes for clearing the area have been obtained.
It's important to acknowledge the efforts of Michael Willoughby who has worked closely with the Parish
Council in recent years to progress this project.
Very good progress is being made on the Hyde Mill project by the team of enthusiastic volunteers led by
Cllr Thurstance. They have exposed the footings of the original building and discovered a number of
historical artefacts. There is still much to investigate on this site, and additional volunteers are always
welcome.
My colleagues on the Parish Council along with your District and County Councillors continue to work on
your behalf on a huge range of topics, and I express my gratitude for their efforts and commitments.
I wish you all a very happy Christmas, and a healthy and happy 2012.

Adrian Warner's Marie Curie challenge
This is my favourite picture of my charity bike ride in California for Marie Curie Cancer care.
I know there's a lack of spectacular scenery, of bikes and of sweat and tears which were very much
part of the trip. But it was taken in San Francisco on the last night of the trip
when we had completed the 400km ride in five days from Yosemite Park to the Golden Gate bridge.
The reason I like it, is because it tells the whole story of the trip in one shot - smiles, laughs and
incredible camaraderie after one of the most enjoyable weeks of my life.
A week earlier we had all gathered at Heathrow, not knowing each other.
Seven days on and together this group of 28-strong new friends had raised more than £80,000.
That's more than 4,000 hours of Marie Curie nurses caring for people with cancer.
So, I must thank all of you who have supported the bike ride.
I have raised more than £4,000

The cycling was brilliant, through spectacular countryside across California, and the most striking bit

also hoping to be invited to do a
few appearances at debates or
business functions talking about
2012 when I will ask for all of any
fee to go directly to my charity ride.
I haven't decided on the ride yet but the Marie Curie group is meeting for a reunion in February in
Edinburgh and I am sure we will have ideas. So you can see I am hooked on the cycling and on the
charity fundraising. Thank you so much again for your support. The fact is you have changed my life
more than anything or anybody in the last 10 years by encouraging me to take up this challenge.
And your money will also change the lives of so many people who are treated by Marie Curie nurses and
of so many families who are caring for them. Please be as proud of that as I am and keep supporting the

As editor of the Wheel, the date of the Christmas Fayre infuriates me every year! The September Wheel is much too
early to include anything more than the date of the Fayre. The December Wheel - well it has just happened. But when
I am writing this - it hasn’t yet happened! So, I do not get the chance to report how well it went until the beginning of
March. That is, if I can find someone who remembers!
AND we often forget to thank the many people who work so hard - during the year, before, during and
after the Fayre - to make the afternoon such a convivial and enjoyable social get-together that it is.

St JOHN AT EPHESUS
Towards the end of a tour of Turkey in October we
came up the west coast to Ephesus. At the
Council of Ephesus in 431 AD it was accepted that
St John, apostle and evangelist, had come there
following the martyrdom of his brother James
somewhere between 37 AD and 48 AD. With him
was understood to be Mary, the mother of Jesus,
who had commended her to John's care during
the crucifixion. Both must have been settled
there by 55-58 AD when St Paul arrived to expand
the Christian community. A few years later St
John was twice threatened with death by the
Roman emperor, Domitian, but survived to go
into exile on the nearby island of Patmos where
he wrote the book of Revelation.
This was
addressed to the seven churches then
established in 'Asia' (today's western Turkey), of
which Ephesus headed the list. He returned in 95
AD, living on Ayasuluk Hill at the present-day
town of Selcuk near Ephesus, where he remained
until his death at around 100 years of age. In that
time he wrote the Gospel bearing his name.
St John was buried on that hill at his request, and
there his tomb can be seen to this day. It was
surmounted two or three centuries later with a
monument, which suggests that his memory had
been continuously honoured throughout the
intervening period.
The first covering was
succeeded by a church which survived into the
reign of Justinian (527-565) but by then had so
deteriorated that the emperor and his wife,
Theodora, commissioned in its stead a six-domed
church, of which the ruins are now the main
feature of the site. If still standing this church
would, at 423 X 211 ft., rank seventh largest
among the great places of Christian worship to
which tourists are drawn nearly 15 centuries
later. It was one of Europe's main venues for
pilgrimage until 1304 when the Turks occupied
Ephesus and converted part of the building to a
mosque.
Who knows what a magnificent
structure it would have remained if it had not
been destroyed by an earthquake just 60 years
later? Excavations began here in 1921 and were
extended to surrounding structures from 1930.
Most prominent of these is the 6th century fortress
with 15 towers which occupies the actual summit
of the hill and after a process of restoration,
largely completed in 2006, looks much as it would
have done when first built.
The remains of Ephesus itself, five minutes' drive
from Selcuk, are among the most dramatic and
celebrated of the many Greco-Roman towns still
undergoing excavation on Turkey's south and
west coasts.

Photography display held at St. Katharine's
Church in June during Open Gardens, a
group of those who exhibited their work
expressed the desire to continue having an
annual exhibition. A meeting was held in
the George, through the kind offices of Keith,
and those present asked Laurie Kerr to
continue in the role of co-ordinator and
instigator. Further details of exhibitions will
be publicised as they become known. As
before, entries of work for the exhibition will
only be accepted from residents of Ickleford.

Prepare for rising energy prices
The message isn't new, but it has more urgency. The Prime Minister met the Big Six energy suppliers and
they agreed to write to 4 million households inviting them to Check, Switch and Insulate to Save.
The concern is over rising energy prices. According to the Financial Times, the average dual fuel customer
now spends 6% of income on energy bills compared to 3% in 2004. If the trend persists the average
household faces fuel poverty by 2015.
The trend is upwards, so how do we counter it? Here are some tips.
1) Insulate Your Home
Take the frost check. If the frost thaws faster on your roof than your neighbour's, heat is escaping. Top up
your loft insulation to 270mm (10.5") to prevent this. Council grants reduce the cost and it could be free if you
are aged 70 or over.
2) Go Solar
You can now get Feed in Tariff payments for having solar panels on your roof. These are index linked so
they will rise with inflation over 25 years.
3) Switch Energy Supplier
With 400 tariffs available, a comparison site can help. If you prefer not to switch, review your payment
method - direct debit is cheaper. Ofgem has said it will simplify standard tariffs so like-for-like comparison
will get easier.

16. Choir practices tend to be fun with the occasional piece of hard work – and the
results are quite amazing because children nowadays are so musically talented. The
results of these talents can be heard on Sunday mornings.
There is only one strict rule and that is that no child may be unkind to another child in
any way.
8.00pm ST. KATHARINE'S SINGERS. A time for musically inclined friends to
meet and rehearse anthems and carols and generally enjoy singing in a group. The
'Singers' please us on Festivals, which would not be the same without them, and at
other times when they have rehearsed suitable anthems – and also of course at
Christmas at the 'Carols by Candlelight' .
THURSDAYS
9.10am. On Thursday morning we have a said Eucharist which provides about 30
minutes of time for quiet prayer and reflection as well as a celebration of Holy
Communion. All are very welcome to attend.
FRIDAYS
SOCIABLE SOUP LUNCHES 12 noon – 1.30pm held in the Church on the first
Friday of the month. This has proved to be a time when newcomers to our village
have discovered the Church and have been made to feel welcome, as well as
regular friends who enjoy a really good soup, roll, drink and a chat.

Every week the brass in the Church is polished, the Church is tidied and cleaned and beautiful arrangements
of flowers appear. One could say, 'as if by magic'! However, how wrong one would be because we have
extremely dedicated and generous friends who work to rotas on the upkeep of the interior. The churchyard is
mown and the paths are swept and the gutters cleared of pine needles – again by people who are willing to give
of their time and energies. If you feel you would like to join in, in any way, with the activities on offer, please
feel free to do so. If you don't know who to approach, please ask me!

CRAFTS ANCIENT AND MODERN
There was a real buzz about St Katharine's on
September 10 as the church hosted an
observation hive brought in by the community bee
garden Buzzworks.
The craft fair was organised as part of the
Heritage Open Days and proved a great
attraction. Other skills on display were millinery,
lace-making, weaving, silver jewellery, knitwear,
furniture restoration and ice-skating dresses.
The visitors to the church were delighted to see
the demonstrations and were even able to try
their hand at lace-making.
At the same time the church welcomed cyclists
and walkers on the annual Beds and Herts
Histroic Churches Trust 'Bike and Hike'.

Apart from all our regular monthly activities,

have managed to fit in Bowls, & Petanque days,
plus outings to the Theatre and we have held two
special memorable events:
at our April meeting we enjoyed a
"Royal" Tea Party
to mark the Wedding of William and Kate
and then 51 members and friends visited
Clarence House and Buckingham Palace
where at the latter they were thrilled to see the
Wedding Dress on display
In October we enjoyed our Harvest Supper, again a
full house of 72 members and guests in total - we
were particularly pleased to welcome the Revd.
Margaret and Barbara Robertson as our special
guests and to have our newly formed drama group
entertaining us.
Our "crafty ladies" have made 25 pennants as our
contribution for the Olympics next year - all
W.I.`s and other organisations in the country were
asked to supply these so that every competitor will
be given one as a memento.
We look forward to 2012 with a varied selection of
speakers planned so if you feel you would like to
come along and find out more of what we do we
shall be very pleased to welcome you.

SAMARITAN’S PURSE
SHOE BOX APPEAL 2011
In the September Wheel we said
“To a child it's just the one box that matters.”
We have been able to help more than 280 children feel that they matter, that
they have not been forgotten as that is the number of boxes that have started
their long journey from Ickleford this Christmas, to Kyrgyzstan (almost to the
border of China). At the time of writing the exact number is not known as more
boxes have been promised.
Your response has been fantastic, whether
it has been to contribute individual items
or completed shoe boxes, or to wrap boxes.
Everything has counted, particularly so in
these difficult economic times.
A special thank you to V R Jennings, and
Susannah, for providing the much needed
storage for the boxes whilst they were
awaiting collection.

Ickleford CC celebrated a successful season at their recent awards evening.
While the first team were unfortunately relegated from division 2 of the Saracens
Herts League the second team were promoted to division 6 after finishing 4th in
division 7 while the 3rd team won division 12 by 33 points to gain promotion
to division 11. The Sunday first team won every completed game in division 5
of the Beds County League and won the league by a staggering 123 points to
gain promotion to division 4.

On November 4th Ickleford CC embark on a new venture when they host a
Sportsman's Dinner with England test legend Graham Gooch as the guest speaker.
The event has sold out and should be profitable for the club to reward the hard work of
Jason and Sharon Gornall, Sharon Timm and Peter Marsden who have organised it.
Looking to next season we will be looking for new players as our new 4th team has
been accepted in to the Saracens League while we are still hopeful the Sunday
second team will be accepted in to the Beds County League. Any new players

Ickleford Preschool is set in the friendly village of Ickleford and consists of a Nursery and a
Playgroup offering exciting opportunities to all. We welcome children from two years and six
months up to Primary age, and follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum.
We have had an excellent half term so far. Children have settled into preschool and we have
learned a great deal about each individual’s likes and dislikes. Last half term we focused on
colours, numbers and shapes. The fire brigade also paid us a visit and children enjoyed spraying
water from the hose.
This half term we will be learning firework safety, beginning the preschool Nativity, and celebrating
Christmas. There will be also be some fundraising events held over the term, so please check the
website for details.

We have been advised that some children are walking round the village
with some of our collecting boxes and postcards – knocking on doors and
attempting to collect money in the name of the church.
St Katharine’s Church never goes from door to door asking for donations
for the upkeep or restoration of the Church.
In particular, no children are ever allowed to use collecting boxes in the
Church’s name – for such a purpose or for any other charitable cause.
HYDE MILL
In August 2010 the Hyde Mill project was initiated following the gift of land from Mrs Dorothy Parker,
being transferred to the Parish Council, on which the original Mill and house had stood, as it was her
wish that this piece of history stay in the ownership of the Village.
A group of 35 interested residents attended the first meeting in November 2010, when 3 groups were
established to clear the site, research the history of the Mill and look at any possible archaeological
items that may be discovered in the forthcoming dig. Access to the site initially proved a little difficult
as the River Oughton had burst its bank near the entrance to the site into a separate tributary, in
places quite deep, but following cooperation from the River Ivel Internal Drainage Board the breach
was closed, and the water diverted back into the main stream, allowing safer access to the site.
Over the winter months volunteers cleared all the old foliage that had prevented a clearer path to the
site, and before the nesting season, so that by April the main area was clearly identified from old
maps to begin the painstaking task of tracing the former house. Two teams of volunteers working at
weekends and during the week have painstakingly worked through the summer and their efforts
have revealed the clear outline of the foundation walls of the house together with tiled floor levels.
Needless to say vast quantities of top soil was removed during the “dig” together with a mountain of
old bricks.
Another part of the group have researched the ownership of the Mill back to1102 and via census
returns from 1841-1911, and traced other detailed maps and photographs of the Mill in its former
days - all of which are on the Website.
Where the Mill wheels were situated tree roots have encroached into the brick surrounds and it is
planned to have many of the older trees lopped in the coming months to prevent any further damage.
This will constitute the main expense so far and grants are being sought to cover these costs.
So what happens next? Protection for the site needs to be a priority for the coming winter months as
there is a risk that any severe frosts could crack or destroy the brickwork uncovered given the age,
and the aim then is to open the site for visitors, with a description of the site available and what has
been achieved over the last year. The interest, enthusiasm and hard work shown by the group is
certainly to be commended, and it is to be hoped that it will form a future historical area of interest for
the Village.
There will be a meeting in Ickleford Village Hall on
Monday 9th January at 7.45pm
and any residents interested in coming along to hear more of the future of the project
would be most welcome.
