NEW RELEASES TOSCANINI - ATTERBERG, BARBER, RAVEL ETC., 1940 & 1943 NBC Symphony Orchester conducted by ARTURO TOSCANINI This important historical release brings the only performance Toscanini ever gave of the Swedish composer Kurt Atterberg's Sixth Symphony, which won the 1928 Columbia Schubert Centenary Prize. This is therefore a highly valuable recording, for the composer later described Toscanini's account as the finest he had ever heard of any of his works. Also on the disc are four items from an important Washington DC concert given in 1940 prior to a South American Tour, including the delightful Batuque by the Brazilian composer Fernandez and Samuel Barber's haunting Adagio for strings. A rare disc of Toscanini in mainly 20th-century music. GHCD 2348 G REAT P IANISTS - VOL . 1, 1939-56 - WILHELM BACKHAUS piano, NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA conducted by GUIDO CANTELLI - LILI KRAUS piano, CONCERTGEBOUW ORCHESTRA conducted by PIERRE MONTEUX - ARTHUR RUBINSTEIN piano, NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA conducted by VICTOR DE SABATA GHCD 2349 Three great pianists of the 20th-century are brought together on this unique CD, which features live performances from 1939 and the immediate post-war years. Wilhelm Backhaus gives a superlative account of Beethoven's Fourth Concerto in New York with the lamented Guido Cantelli offering magnificent orchestral support. Pierre Monteux and the Concertgebouw Orchestra partner the wonderful Hungarian pianist Lili Kraus in Weber's beautiful Konzertstück - a rare recording, indeed - and Arthur Rubinstein is at his scintillating best in Rachmaninov's Paganini Rhapsody, with the legendary Victor de Sabata and the New York Philharmonic on top form. R OBIN O RR (1909-2006) - C ENTEN ARY T RIB UTE - MAX ROSTAL violin, FRANZ OSBORN piano - JAMES DURRANT viola, LAWRENCE GLOVER piano - LEONARD FRIEDMAN violin, DUNCAN JOHNSON viola and JOANNA BORRETT cello - EDWIN PALING violin - ELISABETH MCDONALD cello - GRANVILLE JONES violin, THURSTON DART harpsichord GHCD 2350 The music of the Scottish-born but naturalised Swiss composer Robin Orr, who died in 2006 aged 96 is remarkable for its consistent quality and genuine style - the work of a naturally very gifted composer, who wrote three operas and three symphonies amongst other works. Following the success of an earlier Guild CD devoted to his orchestral music, we are proud to present a collection of outstanding broadcast and live performances of his chamber music, including the Duo for violin and cello, which is an absolute masterpiece. The performers are amongst the most famous musicians of the past, including Thurston Dart, Max Rostal and Franz Osborn - which alone guarantees the excellence of this music.
