Amy Winehouse,
a troubled star gone too soon
BEN SISARIO
NYT SYNDICATE
MY Winehouse, the British singer
who found worldwide fame with a
sassy, hip-hop-inflected take on retro
soul, yet became a tabloid fixture as
her problems with drugs and alcohol
led to a strikingly public career collapse, was
found dead on Saturday in her apartment in London, the police said.
She was 27.
The cause was not immediately known. The police said
that they were investigating the circumstances of
the death, but that “at
this early stage it is being
treated as unexplained.”
With a husky, tart
voice and a style that
drew equally from the
sounds of Motown and
the stark storytelling of rap,
Winehouse became one of
the most acclaimed young
singers of the past decade, selling millions of albums, winning
five Grammy Awards and starting a
British retro-R&B trend that continues
today.
Yet, almost from the moment she
arrived on the international pop scene
in early 2007, Winehouse appeared to
flirt with self-destruction. She sang of
an alcohol-soaked demimonde in
songs like Rehab — whose refrain,
They tried to make me go to rehab/I
said, No, no, no, crystallised
Winehouse’s persona — and before
long it seemed to spill over into her
personal life and fuel lurid headlines.
The
interplay
between
Winehouse’s life and art made her
one of the most fascinating figures
in pop music since Kurt Cobain,
whose demise in 1994 — also at age
27 — was preceded by drug abuse and a
frustration with fame as something that
could never be escaped. Yet in time, the
notoriety from Winehouse’s various drug
arrests, public meltdowns and ruined concerts overshadowed her talent as a musician,
and her career never recovered.
On Saturday, as the news of Winehouse’s
death spread, many musicians took to Twitter
with deep sadness but no surprise. As much as
her misfortunes eventually took on a sense of predictability, when Winehouse arrived with her
breakthrough second album Back to Black,
which was released in Britain in late 2006 and in
the United States the next year, she was a fresh
voice with a novel take on pop history. She
spoke of her love for Frank Sinatra,
Thelonious Monk and Motown, as well
as Nas, the hard-core New York rapper with a sharp eye for narrative
detail.
Her greatest love, however,
was the 1960s girl groups,
something that was evident from the instantly
recognisable beehive
hairdo and Cleopatra
makeup that she borrowed
from
the
Ronettes. In an interview with The Los

Angeles Times in 2007, Winehouse explained
how a breakup had inspired the songs on Back to
Black, and described her state of mind in terms of
music and alcohol.
“I didn’t want to just wake up drinking, and
crying, and listening to Shangri-Las, and go to
sleep, and wake up drinking, and listening to the
Shangri-Las,” she said. “So I turned it into songs,
and that’s how I got through it.”
Amy Jade Winehouse was born in
Southgate,
London,
on
September 14, 1983. Her
mother, Janis, was a pharmacist, and her father,
Mitch, was a cab driver
who nursed a love for
music. They both survive her, along with a
brother, Alex.
Winehouse showed
an early talent for performing, as well as an
ecleticism that would
characterise her later
work. She loved her
father’s Sinatra records, but
she also liked hip-hop; at age 10
she and a friend formed a rap group
called Sweet ’n’ Sour that Winehouse later
described as “the little white Jewish Salt-NPepa.” (Winehouse was the “sour” half.)
In 2003, at age 19, Winehouse released her first
album, Frank. Influenced by jazz, it established
her as a rising star in Britain. But Back to Black,
recorded with the producers Mark Ronson and
Salaam Remi, and the Brooklyn retro-soul band
the Dap-Kings, made her an international sensation. With thick horns and club-ready hip-hop
beats, the album was a darkly stylish update of
classic 1960s R&B, and it was adored by critics
and the public alike.
According to Nielsen SoundScan, which tracks
music sales, Winehouse has sold 2.7 million
albums and 3.4 million tracks in the United
States.
Yet, while Rehab was still climbing the charts,
Winehouse made headlines for drug binges and
arrests that left her hospitalised and forced her to
cancel concert dates.
In October 2007, Winehouse and her husband
at the time, Blake Fielder-Civil, were arrested in
Norway on charges of marijuana possession. A
month later, Fielder-Civil was arrested and
accused of perverting the course of justice by trying to bribe the victim in a bar fight not to testify
against him. (Winehouse and Fielder-Civil
divorced in 2009.)
Perhaps the peak of Winehouse’s career was
the 2008 Grammy Awards. She was nominated
for six prizes and took home five, including Best
New Artist. Yet even days before the show, her
appearance there was uncertain because of visa
problems. In the end, she performed by satellite
from London.
Although Winehouse has not made an album
since Back to Black, she tried to revive her career
several times. In a recent interview with The New
York Times, Winehouse’s father, who released a
jazz album this year, said she had been in good
health lately. (He was scheduled to perform at the
Blue Note jazz club in New York on Monday, but
cancelled after learning of his daughter’s death.)
Yet Winehouse’s most recent comeback
attempt faltered badly. Last month, she cancelled a European tour after a performance in
Belgrade on the first night, during which she
appeared to be too intoxicated to perform
properly.
The interplay
between Winehouse’s life
and art made her one of the most
fascinating figures in pop music
since Kurt Cobain, whose demise in
1994 — also at age 27 — was
preceded by drug abuse and a
frustration with fame as
something that could never

Not so confident Lady Gaga
Hollywood made me fearless: Cat Deeley
POP singer Lady Gaga has revealed she lacks confidence and thus
spends 15 minutes every day thinking positive thoughts about herself. “I’m not body confident all the time - just like everybody else.
But sometimes I am. You know, I dance a lot and it’s important for
me to stay in shape, so I can keep up with my fans, who keep me
very busy on the road,” femalefirst.co.uk quoted Gaga as saying.
“My advice is to spend about 15 minutes every day having compassionate thoughts about yourself. That might help,” she added.
BRITISH television host Cat Deeley says moving to Hollywood has
made her more fearless. The British presenter moved to the US in
2006 to host the dance reality show So You Think You Can Dance.
“I’ve always had a good dose of ambition and Hollywood has
made me more fearless. I think if you feel too safe or secure, you
become complacent. What you say no to is kind of more important
than what you say yes to,” femalefirst.co.uk quoted the 34-yearold as saying.

NGRATEFUL as it sounds,
I occasionally tire of the
same old backyard standbys
churned out by the grill. I
love a burger as much as the

outside cooking and eating, there are so
many more possibilities to explore.
There is something about leaving the
house, getting your hands dirty, and
sharing food outdoors that makes everything taste better.
Being a country girl, I had a rigorous
childhood training in campfire cooking,
and I see no need to forget those skills as
an adult. I am trained as a chef in London,
where I now live, but love to break free
and swap the city for the country whenever possible.

without a can opener when your wilderness meal depends upon a can of tomatoes.
Plan each meal before you leave and go
from there, bringing only essential items.
Whenever possible, make tools work
overtime. The corkscrew known as a waiter’s friend, for example, is much lighter
and more useful than the ungainly model
with arms that flail up and down. Better
yet is a Swiss army knife or some other
multitasking battery of tools.
A fine Microplane-style grater will
make easy work of garlic and ginger, as
well as hard cheeses and citrus zests. A
small pair of scissors is handy for both
fresh herbs and bacon. I usually don’t
bother with a bulky colander or sieve; for
draining boiled vegetables and pasta, a
pot lid, held gingerly askew as you pour,
works almost as well.
Chopping boards are essential, though
I wish they weren’t so cumbersome. I
make do with a couple of diminutive
wooden ones, bought for a song at a certain blue- and yellow-themed housewares
store. I find plastic ones to be slippery and
insubstantial – not ideal when knives are
in action.
Speaking of which, nothing will make
you feel like more of a capable Robinson
Crusoe-type than a handsome pocketknife. A French Opinel knife is beautifully made and durable, and (this is key)
the blade folds away safely when not in
use, retaining its sharpness and your
peace of mind. And that, along with a
wooden spoon, a spatula and a pair of
tongs (all long-handled to protect against
burned arms when cooking over open
flames) should cover it on the utensils
front.
One of those foldable fabric coolers
with a shoulder strap is useful, as is a sturdy backpack for transporting dry ingredients, utensils and kitchenware. Include a
mixing bowl or two (I usually use uglybut-practical plastic ones), a saucepan or
camping pot and a light frying pan. Don’t
forget the matches.
Aluminum foil is amazingly useful not
just for wrapping but for cooking packages of vegetables, fish and meat in the
embers of the fire with very little fuss and
no washing up.
A bit of prep before leaving civilisation
will pay great dividends. Try making
dressings ahead of time in lidded jam jars.
Degradable plastic food bags are ideal for
transporting anything from marinating
chicken to chopped onion. (Yes, I will and
do chop onions in advance to avoid fooling around with knives in fields.) They are
practically weightless, take up only the
space of their contents and can be buried
or composted after use.
Water becomes a particularly precious
commodity if you’re not near a source
that’s safe to drink. Making that heavy
plastic bottle of drinking water work for
its living will make carrying it less painful.
I freeze well-sealed bottles of drinking
water and juice to make freezer blocks,
essential when transporting meat and
dairy. That way, your drinks are chilled,
and you eliminate the extra weight of ice
or ice packs.
Lastly, and not to hector, but please be
kind to the environment. Have a bag for
any packaging and non-degradable
garbage and take it away with you. Douse
fires with water or sand and replace any
turf divots you created while building
your fire pit.

Vidya and Naseer’s Dirty dance with oranges!
Kareena Kapoor to do a
Chameli again!
Scene
unscene
DIRECTOR Milan Luthria recently ordered two truckloads of
oranges for a sensational song sequence in Balaji’s
forthcoming The Dirty Picture. The track was picturised on
Vidya Balan and Naseeruddin Shah and shot at Hyderabad’s
Ramoji Film City. In true South style, over a thousand oranges
were rolled down a hillside as the actors danced to
choreographer Pony Verma’s matkas and jhatkas. In The Dirty
Picture, Naseer, who plays a South-Indian superstar,
consented to dancing after 20 years, as it was in line with the
requirements of his character. He was last seen dancing with
Sonam in Rajiv Rai’s smash hit, Tridev.
KAREENA Kapoor’s wax statue at London’s Madame
Tussauds museum will have the actress in her Chameli look.
Says a source close to Bebo, “Several looks were discussed,
but the maximum number of votes went to Kareena’s look in
Chameli, for which she won many awards. Also, as it’s an
international forum, they wanted her in Indian wear. Chameli
was a turning point in her career and she was appreciated by
both critics as well as fans. It was after her performance in
Chameli that the actress was appreciated as a talented star.”

I like both my
worlds: Madhuri Dixit
TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK
E
VEN though there’s a buzz
every time she returns to the
country, Madhuri Dixit Nene
says that she has become
immune to it. She lived her
life under the limelight for almost two
decades before bidding it adieu for a
married life in the US, with Dr Sriram
Nene. While in Delhi to walk for the
Couture Week, she says that she
doesn’t miss either life when she is
living the other. “It’s something I
have gotten used to, this coming in
and going out. After the showsha of this place, I like going
back to the peace and quiet
of my family. Don’t get
me wrong – I like both
worlds. I enjoy being
anonymous and I enjoy
being centre-stage too.
When I go there, the
mom takes over. But
when I am here, I am
just the actress,” said
Madhuri.
But in both the
worlds, Madhuri
insists that she
doesn’t live even
a bit of the
other character.
Madhuri
Dixit
It maybe hard for
fans to picture their
dancing diva Madhuri Dixit
staying at home but the star
says she is all game for
playing both the parts
of her life
“Nothing changes. Once I reach there, it’s all
about my children and family. It’s everyday. I
become a complete mom. My kids have to go to
school at eight, so I have to wake up early. I
don’t have time to think about anything else.
The only thought is getting the kids up on
time, picking them from school at three, getting
their homework done and then having dinner.
Then it’s the same cycle again the next day.
Except the weekends, when it’s different. On
school days, they don’t want to wake up on time
and on a holiday, they wake up at six and say,
‘Mom, I’m hungry!’
Madhuri asserts that her family life is really
normal, but she does say that the neighbours
sporadically remind her that she is a known face
back home. She says, “Yes, the neighbours do
ask me about my work. Sometimes I show them
clippings if they are interested. They see the clips
on the internet too. And the American guys are
very kicked about it – that they know a celebrity.
And then there’s a flurry of people who knock on
the door or come and meet me for a while.”
But it seems that Madhuri is getting ready to
come back to the greasepaint routine as there
have been reports of Vishal Bhardwaj
approaching her for his next, Dedh Ishqiya.
While Madhuri insists that nothing has been
discussed with respect to the project, she says
that she is looking forward to acting again, but
only if her family is comfortable with the idea.
She says, “I have done a movie in the past too,
but if I do that again, I have to make sure that
everyone in my family is comfortable and I
have to manage that.”
Which also includes her hubby Sriram Nene.
But he has no objections to her taking up any
new projects, says the actress. Talking about
him, she says, “He was here for 15 days during
Jhalak... with the kids because it was vacation
time for them. He saw how it
was shot. And he’s comfortable with the
idea of me doing a
movie. He’s not the
serious kinds that
people think he is. In
fact, he’s not very serious
if you get to know him. He
jumps from cliffs, and does stuff like that.
He loves adventure. He is very different
from the image we have of a doctor. We are
a team. We always think of ourselves as a
team. We will do whatever makes us happy.
He says that if you want to work in movies, it’ll
make me happy and if you don’t want to, I am
happy. We work as a team like that.”

Shraddha Kapoor steals

CTOR Shakti Kapoor’s daughter
Shraddha Kapoor charmed
everyone with her innocence and
grace as she walked the ramp for
designer Anju Modi on the third day of the
Synergy1 Delhi Couture Week on Sunday
evening.
Dressed in a voluminous golden and
white gown, the actress immediately captivated the audience as she opened the
show, unlike the usual appearance of
Bollywood celebs at the end.
“I was a bit nervous initially but as I
walked in, the excitement built up and
everything just went with the flow.
Moreover there were some family members from Delhi to support me and I am
glad everything went well,” said Shraddha.
Anju’s collection was called “Maya” and
included a lot of angrakhas, saris, velvet
jackets and lehengas in blue, ivory and
maroon with elaborate embellishments
and embroidery.
“There were 20 garments in total and I
prepared the entire range in just 20 days
which was next to impossible, especially
when it comes to couture line. However, I
am fortunate enough to have managed it
and come up with a collection which
received positive response from the audience,” she said after the show.
Earlier, Karisma Kapoor was suppose to
walk for Delhi-based designer but she
backed out due to family commitments.
Anju then pitched for Shraddha, feeling she
was the perfect choice to represent her line.
“I was looking for someone who is not
only fresh and elegant but also has an
angel-like personality and Sharddha intuitively came into my mind. Within 24
hours, she was ready,” Anju added.

Justin Bieber will be forgotten: Vanilla Ice
Richards throws baby shower for adopted daughter
RAPPER Vanilla Ice suggests teen sensation Justin Bieber to enjoy
his success when he can because his fame won’t last. The “onetime” hitmaker, was catapulted to fame after his hit single Ice Ice
Baby. But the star’s fame was fleeting and he struggled to maintain his success. “I mean, I did Ice Ice Baby when I was 16. So I
can kind of relate a bit. Sold over a hundred million records. And I
had a weekend that lasted about three years, and I didn’t know
who I was, what’s my purpose in life,” dailymail.co.uk quoted Ice
as saying. “So my prediction about Bieber is that he’s going to go
through one of those weekends that lasts a few years because
he’s had such success as a child act.
ACTRESS Denise Richards threw a baby shower for her newly
adopted daughter Eloise. “So excited for Eloise’s shower today.
Gonna be amazing!” Richards wrote on her Twitter page. The
decor of the baby shower included pink and black flowers,
inspired by the classic Eloise children’s book series, a cake topper
with a replica of Eloise and her edler sisters - Sam, 7, and Lola,
6. The baby shower was attended by Tori Spelling, Lisa Rinna,
Ali Landry, Nancy O’Dell and Ali Sweeney. The gifts included a
pink Stokke stroller and baskets of baby clothes, plush toys and
baby bibs, burpies and blankets. “She’s so excited. She’s so in
love with her new daughter. This is a really special time for her.

Jessica Biel explains her
‘love’ for fight scenes
TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK
“It is amazing, because you never would ever
do that to somebody in real life. Never,” Jessica,
who appeared at the convention to promote her
upcoming Total Recall reboot, explained. “It’s
been so fun. I really enjoy that kind of physicality. It’s different for a woman to be able to do
that kind of thing.”
The annual convention draws thousands of
fans who wait for hours - sometimes days—for
the opportunity to geek out over their favourite
stars. So we just had to ask, what does Jessica
“geek out” over?
“I geek out about food. I am a complete food
geek,” she told Scott. “Burgers. I’m on a bit of a
burger [kick]. I’ve been making a lot of fudge.
I’m a chocolate freak!
“I’m also a snowboarding freak... where’s the
snow?” she continued. “I’m following the snow
around the country. That kind of stuff I geek out
about.”
ESSICA Biel is gorgeous, but she’s not
afraid to get down and dirty (and
sweaty!) when it comes to filming
action sequences for her movies. In
fact, she “loves” it!
“I love action sequences and fights. It’s so
fun!” the 29-year-old beauty excitedly told
Access Hollywood’s Scott “Movie” Mantz during an interview at the 2011 Comic-Con in San
Diego, California. “You get trained to kick the

ORMER Laguna Beach and The Hills
star Kristin Cavallari and Chicago
Bears quarterback Jay Cutler have
called off their engagement, a source close
to the couple has revealed to Access
Hollywood’s Billy Bush.
Kristin, 24, and Jay, 28, became engaged
in April, after the football star proposed
during the couple’s vacation in Cabo San
Lucas, Mexico.
A representative for Kristin was not
immediately available for comment on
the news when contacted by Access on
Sunday.
Back in February, Kristin stopped by
Access Hollywood Live and dished to Billy
Bush and Kit Hoover about her relationship with Jay.
“Is he the one?” Kit asked Kristin.
“I’d like to say yes,” Kristin said with a
giggle at the time .
“I love Chicago,” the blonde reality star
said of her time in the city. “My mom is
there — and that side of my family — so, I
get to spend time with my mom who I don’t
get to see that often. But it’s been great. I
love the city and during the football season
I was there a lot. Now, we’re both out here.”
Kristin was previously linked to USC
grad and Houston Texans quarterback
Matt Leinart.

Claudine Barretto’s reconciliation with
Gretchen replete with ‘tears of joy’
Kylie says yes to sexy outfits
Scene

KYLIE Padilla Padilla can wear sexy clothes on TV, but draws
the line when it comes to bikinis. That’s because her Muslim
parents, actor Robin Padilla and Liezl Sicangco, imposed
strict rules on dressing up while Kylie and her two sisters
were growing up. “We’re not allowed to wear slippers in public. Slippers should be worn only at home or at the beach,”
says Kylie. “Mama also told us, ‘Wear sleeveless shirts with
pants, shorts with jacket tops.’” But now that she’s seen regularly on TV, her parents are more lenient, allowing Kylie to
wear more daring clothes. “They know it’s part of my job,”
explains the lead star of GMA 7’s Blusang Itim.
CLAUDINE Barretto admits her reconciliation with sister Gretchen
Barretto was very emotional that had them in tears. “Tears of joy...we
cried so much,” Claudine noted in her Showbiz Central interview.
Bulletin Entertainment first detailed about the touching encounter of the
two last July 6, reporting that the “emotional incident between the warring sisters culminated in a tight, tearful embrace that put to shame the
most melodramatic scenes in any soap opera either of them had previously done.” Now that everything is well between the sisters, Claudine
promises not to estrange herself from Gretchen again.

At a recent media gathering

case that stemmed from her

questioned Patrick’s sexuality.
“In this life, nothing is impossible,” Aiko said, raising the
possibility of an out-of-court

Asked if she could ever be
friends with Patrick again, Aiko
said: “It would probably take a
while … we really can’t tell.”
The 35-year-old actress said
she’s feeling better now, five
months after the controversial
breakup.
She’s thankful to her former
husbands, Jomari Yllana and
Martin Jickain, for “lifting me

Jomari is dad to her son

marriage to Jomari was
annulled in 2003. She is awaiting the decision of her 2008

“These men were there to

me. They both said ‘Aiko would
never do anything like that.’”
One thing she learned from
her relationship with Patrick,
Aiko said, was that she should
always maintain good ties with
her exes.
Aiko said she fought depression through prayers and
diverted her attention to her
kids and work.
“God has been really kind to
me,” she said. “Shortly after the
controversy, I was offered to do
Maalaala Mo Kaya, which my
bosses said was one of the highest-rating episodes of the show.
Then I was told I’d be part of
Reputasyon.”
Aiko said she now draws
strength from her children.
“You get a different kind of joy
and contentment from your
kids. You may have broken

boyfriends, but your kids
will never leave you. They
will remain loyal to you and

Charice featured in Oprah’s bookazine
TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK
NQUESTIONABLY, international singing sensation Charice
holds a special place in renowned
TV host Oprah Winfrey’s heart as she
gets featured in a collector’s edition issue
of O, The Oprah Magazine.
Titled Oprah’s Farewell Celebration:
Inside 25 Extraordinary Years of The
Oprah Winfrey Show, the 19-year-old
singer was placed under the bookazine’s
“The Guests We’ll Always Remember”
category where she was dubbed as the
“golden piped girl.”
“One of the things I love most about

Charice is that no matter what obstacles
she’s faced in her life, she’s never given

Oprah was quoted as saying about her

stories on the now defunct American
daytime show, Oprah, some unforgettable moments, interviews and Oprah’s
farewell message to her quarter of a century’s worth of loyal viewers.
The TV show ran for 25 years until it
aired its farewell episode last May 25,
2011, which the host gave up so as to
focus on her cable channel OWN (Oprah
Winfrey Network) which launched in
January 2011.
Charice’s several appearances in
Oprah were definitely memorable; as it
served as the platform for her international career’s take off.
Recall that in one episode of the show
Charice was named by Oprah as the
“Most Talented Girl in the World” and it
was also in the same show where she first
performed her international debut single, Note to God in 2009.
For her part, Oprah was touted by
“Chasters,” the young singer’s fandom, as
Charice’s fairy godmother – as it was
