The University of Sioux Falls claimed the GPAC Championship in 2006 with a perfect 10-0 conference record. The Cougars then went on to win the NAIA National Football Championship with an overall 14-0 record. USF won their second NAIA National Title and first since 1996. Sioux Falls, Northwestern, and Morningside all advanced into the NAIA Football Playoff Series with the Red Raiders and Mustangs both winning their first round games. Sioux Falls’ quarterback Chad Cavender was named the Victory Sports Network Offensive Player-ofthe-Year, while his coach, Kalen De Boer, was named the AFCA NAIA Coach-of-the-Year. The 2007 GPAC football season will begin on September 1 and once again consist of 10 league games over 11 weeks. Briar Cliff, Dana and Hastings have scheduled non-conference games for this year. Briar Cliff will host Bethany of Kansas on September 15 in Sioux City, Iowa. Dana will travel to Waldorf on September 29 in Forest City, Iowa. Meanwhile Hastings will open their season on September 1 at home against Dakota State in Hastings, Nebraska. Dordt College will officially begin football this fall with a club team. The Defenders will begin varsity play next fall. Dordt has a seven game club schedule set for this fall. Stay up to date with GPAC Football all season long by visiting the GPAC website at www.gpacsports.com. Briar Cliff Preview Concordia Preview By: Jared Bodammer By: Lucas Mohrman A year ago, Briar Cliff head coach Dick Strittmatter guided the Charger Football Program to the most wins in school history, finishing at 5-6. The team fashioned a record of 3-2 at home, winning their first-ever overtime contest, 13-6 over Dakota Wesleyan, Sept. 9. In the off-season, position coaches Beau Livingston and Chris Rooney were promoted to defensive and offensive coordinators, respectively. The Concordia University, Nebraska football team enters the 2007 season determined to improve upon their 2-7 record from 2006. This year’s 90-plus member squad opens the season with a night game at Concordia, Sept. 1. Home contests include match-ups against Hastings (Sept. 8), Bethany (Sept. 15), Midland Lutheran (Sept. 29), Morningside (Oct. 13), Nebraska Wesleyan (Oct. 27) and Sioux Falls (Nov. 10). The team returns the majority of its offensive weapons and is deep at o-line. The squad is, however, without six starters on the defensive side of the ball, including first team allconference Josh Schaffert, the league’s leading tackler. A year ago, Schaffert and then-freshman punter Kane Kuehl became the program’s first players to land on the all-conference’s first team. While Kuehl had a breakout freshman campaign, the Chargers hope to use him a little less in 2007, meaning more success on third downs. The Chargers return Kuehl, as well as 2006 honorable mention all-GPAC selections in junior wideout Luke Roder (36 receptions, 648 yards, 9 touchdowns), senior tailback Adam Robards (114 carries, 496 yards, 4 touchdowns), junior linebacker Jarrod Makovicka (52.5 tackles) and senior defensive end Chris Barber (39 tackles). The Bulldog offense returns starters at nearly every position, including All-GPAC running back, senior JaMaine Lewis. Lewis will run behind a veteran offensive line. In addition to Lewis, the Bulldogs also have Jeff Neujahr returning. Neujahr, a senior, wore many hats for Concordia last season, serving as a wide receiver, running back and return specialist. His explosive ability on kick returns earned him recognition in the conference. He returned three kicks for touchdowns (2 kickoffs, 1 punt), tops in the GPAC. His average of 31.4 yards on kickoffs, led the GPAC and ranked third in the nation. On the other side of the ball, Vance Winter takes over as defensive coordinator and will benefit a deep defensive line that includes Matt Baller, Brock Simomsen and Kyle Rust. In the secondary, senior Brett Mertens makes the switch back to defense after playing QB for a year. He was one of the Bulldogs top tacklers two years ago. Head coach Courtney Meyer remains the longest tenured of any coach in the GPAC, entering his 18th year at the helm. 2007 gpac varsity football previews Dakota Wesleyan Preview Doane Preview By: Alex Linden By: Rick Schmuecker Dakota Wesleyan improved its win total by three games last season finishing 4-6, and the Tigers hope to continue their rise in head coach Brad Pole’s third season. The Tigers will have a new look this season as Pole switches to offensive coordinator after guiding the defense the past two seasons. DWU brought in over 40 new recruits including several players who will battle for starting spots this fall. The Doane College football team will start the season with their third coach in four years, but it is evident that Head Coach Matt Franzen is off to a good start in turning the Tigers fortunes around. This past off-season Franzen added 50-plus recruits and should be around 80-90 players when camp opens. Sophomore quarterback Jon Doom returns after throwing for nearly 1,400 yards as a freshman. Former high school teammate Bubba Slaba was the big play receiver as a freshman in 2006 and figures to be Doom’s go-to-guy this year. Three sophomore starters are back on the offensive line after starting as true freshman. Defensively, All-GPAC linebackers Chris Sheckler and Daniel Wysong and junior outside linebacker Ryan Deibert will be the strength of the Tiger defense. DWU must fill all three starting spots on the defensive line, and the Tigers have to find replacements for three graduated seniors in the secondary. Dana Preview By: Shad Beam Coming off their first winning season since 1995, the Dana Vikings are looking to maintain the momentum they built last year. Dana football finished the 2006 season 6-5 overall with a fifth place in the GPAC. This is the highest finish for Dana football since the GPAC was formed in 2000. Junior quarterback Marcus Sladek (Omaha, Neb.) returns to lead the passing attack. Sladek, a three-year starter, passed for 1577 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2006. The top returning receiver is senior captain B.J. Fields (Omaha, Neb.) who pulled in 23 passes for 193 yards last season. The offensive line returns all of its top players from a year ago, including second-team All-GPAC Clayton Timm (Council Bluffs, Iowa). Maturity and good leadership are key to the defense as well. Senior captain Terrance Mclean (San Antonio, Texas) will be looked to for leadership. Mclean led the Vikings with 5.5 sacks a year ago. Greg Wilmes (Creighton, Neb.) and Kyle Peterson (Blair, Neb.) will be looked to as leaders in the linebacker spots. Trevor Ketelsen (Bloomfield, Neb.) will lead the secondary along with Brandon Terry (Omaha, Neb.). Coach Danenhauer expects newcomers Jake Harral (Omaha, Neb.), Mark Schlueter (Omaha, Neb.) and Otis Seals (Omaha, Neb.) to make a youthful impact on his veteran squad. Also look for senior All-American wrestler Terrence Almond (Pelham, Ga.) to make his collegiate football debut at the halfback spot. There are several question marks on the offensive side of the ball. The quarterback battle that has been going on for the previous two seasons will continue but this time around there are only two competing for the job: JR Artozqui and Bryan Dutcher. The offensive line will see at least three new faces, likely freshman, which will join sophomore returners Jake Ryba and Zane Pfefferle. The running back position is wide open with the graduation of two-time All-GPAC performer Justin Nelson and back-up Alex Renshaw. D’Artagnan Dai’Re is the top returner and is coming off a strong track & field season in which he earned three All-American honors but several freshman will also compete for the job. The defense will be coached by Doane graduate Chris Bessler. He will rely on linebacker Dustin Lind to lead the way. The defensive line will be young but the return of Centennial H.S. grads Seth Styskal and Seth Blake will help the defensive front. Alvin Yates will lead the defensive back field. Hastings Preview By: Pat McCauley The 2007 Broncos enter the season looking to improve upon their 4-6 record in 2006 when they open camp on August 13th. Head Coach Paul Mierkiewicz will rely on 14 returning starters as well as a solid recruiting class for the 2007 campaign. Offensively, the Broncos will look for improvement at quarterback. Newcomer Dayton Edwards will compete with junior Jordan Reed for the starting spot. Top offensive returners include junior RB Dan Bargen, senior offensive linemen Brandon Jacobitz and Evan Klanecky and sophomore receiver Maurice Mansfield. On defense, the Broncos have a wealth of experience at linebacker and some holes to fill at defensive line. Junior Brian Trader made a successful switch from linebacker to defensive end in the spring. The Broncos will also look to sophomore linebacker Mackenzie Hemje and senior defensive back Matt Hilderbrand to anchor the defense. 2007 gpac varsity football Midland Lutheran Preview By: Rich Ray The Midland Lutheran College football team is executing a new formula for success. With the naming of Steve Schneider and Casey Thiele as Co-Head Coaches, the Warriors will be voyaging into territory not seen at Midland Lutheran College before. With the addition of sixty new recruits to the Warrior staff, the Warriors will spend much of the pre-season building the proper chemistry for a very successful 2007. Dustin Lindstrom returns at running back for his senior season, and is looking forward to an injury-free year, to propel him to his All-Conference form of two years ago. Brian Hanson will lead the defense that is a year older and much more experienced for the tough GPAC schedule. Morningside Preview By: Dave Rebstock With 14 returning starters, including eight on defense, the Mustangs expect to challenge for a fourth consecutive NAIA National Playoff berth. Morningside has a 29-7 record for a .806 winning percentage over the past three seasons to make it the winningest college football program in Iowa in terms of total victories and percentage. Morningside returns its entire starting defensive unit aside from the linebacking corp, where it must replace three of its four starters. The defensive leader is first-team All-America defensive back Chad Hustedt, the Mustangs’ leading tackler each of the past two seasons. Hustedt and defensive lineman James Mowrey were both first-team All-GPAC selections in 2006. Offensively the Mustangs return the three-headed running back tandem of Nick Reigle, Pete Lewis, and Tyler Childress, who combined to rush for 1,484 yards and 16 touchdowns, and starting quarterback Tim Richard, who threw for 1,971 yards and 13 touchdowns as a freshman. Nebraska Wesleyan Preview By: Karl Skinner In 2006, Nebraska Wesleyan’s football team had one of its best records in recent years, finishing 7-3 under Head Coach Brian Keller, who surpassed Harold Chaffee to become the winningest football coach in NWU history. In 2007, Keller enters his 12th season at the helm hoping the Prairie Wolves can make it back to the NAIA Playoffs for the first time since 2000. The team returns four full-time starters on offense including two-year starter Zac Rabe at quarterback and Justin Florian, the team’s top receiver, who were both All-GPAC honorable mentions last season. The offensive line returns three players with starting experience in tackle Dan Peterson, guard Cody Smith and center Chea Taylor. The Prairie Wolves look even stronger on defense, returning all three starters up front, including seniors Brandon Minch and David Hellman and junior James Dorcey. Minch made All-GPAC previews Second Team, while Dorcey received honorable mention in 2006. Kyle Elsasser and Ryan Kelly ranked first and third, respectively, in tackles last year from their linebacker positions. Elsasser made All-GPAC honorable mention and ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America First Team. In the defensive secondary, the Prairie Wolves return junior Phil Schroer, who led the NAIA in interceptions and tied the GPAC single-season record with nine picks as a sophomore. Schroer also won or shared Defensive Player of the Week honors three times in 2006. On special teams, senior punter Blake Smith and kick returner Brandon Taute are back. This season, the Prairie Wolves bring in 52 newcomers, including seven from the state of Colorado. Northwestern Preview By: Matt Bos Head Coach Orv Otten’s squad has some key holes to fill in their two-deep lineup, including four-time NAIA All-American and 2006 GPAC Player-of-the-Year, Austin Janssen. However, the Red Raider cupboard is not bare as they return a core group of 25 letter winners and one of the largest and most talented recruiting classes in recent years. Offensively, NWC returns six starters from a 2006 squad which averaged 36.8 points per game, the highest in over nine years. One of the keys to this seasons’ success will be replacing Keith Sietstra. The graduated senior finished second in career yards (4,498) and touchdowns (51) and earned all-conference four consecutive years. A staple of Red Raiders teams in recent years has been the play of their defense, and in 2006, it was no exception. The “Big Red D” gave up just 11.4 points per contest, ranked third in total defense and scored eight touchdowns. Coach Otten and his staff will have to replace not only Austin Janssen but first team allconference performers, Jordan Van Otterloo and Tim Martin. The Red Raiders, however, return five starters and will look to several talented newcomers to fill in the gaps. Sioux Falls Preview By: Chris Weeden The University of Sioux Falls comes into the season ranked No. 1 in the country according to the Victory Sports Network Coaches’ Poll after winning the second national championship in school history last December. The Cougars return last year’s VSN-NAIA Offensive Player- of-the-Year, senior Chad Cavender, who threw for 3,674 yards and 38 touchdowns in his first season as the starter under center. Cavender will be without four-time NAIA All-American selections Dusty Hovorka (WR) and Mike Dvoracek (RB), but multiple weapons still remain for a team that has won five of the seven GPAC titles. The defense loses its sack and tackle leader in linebacker Adam Paulson, but the group figures to remain as dominant as it has been in the past. Last year Cougar defense set the GPAC Scoring Defense Record allowing 7.3 points per game. 2007 defenders fall sports schedules 2007 defenders Women’s volleyball 08/24 TBA @Northwestern Tourney Away 2:15/8:30 PM 08/25 TBA @Northwestern Tourney Away 11:00/3:00 08/28 College of Saint Mary Away 7:00 PM 08/31 Springfield (IL) @Cornerstone Tourney Away 2:00 PM 08/31 Malone @Cornerstone Tourney Away 8:00 PM 09/01 Aquinas (MI) @Cornerstone Tourney Away 10:00 AM 09/01 Illinois Tech @Cornerstone Tourney Away 2:00 PM 09/04 Dakota Wesleyan* Away 7:30 PM 09/07 Baker @Baker Tournament Away 3:00 PM 09/07 Avila @Baker Tournament Away 7:00 PM 09/08 William Jewell @Baker Tournament Away 9:00 AM 09/08 Benedictine @Baker Tournament Away 1:00 PM 09/11 Sioux Falls*Home 7:30 PM 09/14 Saint Mary (NE) @Hastings Tourney Away 2:00 PM 09/14 Bellevue (NE) @Hastings Tourney Away 6:00 PM 09/15 Texas Brownsville @Hastings Tourney Away 9:00 AM 09/15 Away 3:00 PM 2007 defenders men’s golf Away 7:30 PM 09/21 Grand View @Dordt College TourneyHome 4:00 PM 9/06 Buena Vista Invitational Storm Lake, Iowa 9:00 AM 09/21 Briar Cliff @Dordt College TourneyHome 7:30 PM 09/22 William Penn @Dordt College TourneyHome 1:00 PM 09/13 Nebraska Wesleyan Invite Lincoln, Nebraska 9:00 AM 09/22 Sioux Falls @Dordt College TourneyHome 4:00 PM 09/25 Morningside*Home 7:30 PM 9:00 AM 09/28 Nebraska Wesleyan* Away 7:30 PM 09/14 Nebraska Wesleyan Invite Lincoln, Nebraska 09/29 Doane* Away 3:00 PM 9:00 AM 10/03 Northwestern* Away 7:30 PM 09/17 Briar Cliff Invite Sioux City, Iowa 10/05 Hastings*Home 7:30 PM 9:00 AM 10/06 Concordia*Home 3:00 PM 09/18 Morningside Invitational Sioux City, Iowa 10/13 Briar Cliff*Home 7:30 PM 1:00 PM 10/17 Away 7:30 PM 09/28 Northwestern Invitational Orange City, Iowa 10/19 Dana*Home 7:30 PM 11:00 AM 10/20 Midland Lutheran*Home 7:30 PM 10/02 Cougar Invitational Sioux Falls, South Dakota 10/23 Dakota Wesleyan*Home 7:30 PM 1:00 PM 10/26 Away 7:30 PM 10/09 Dordt College Invitational Le Mars, Iowa 10/30 Northwestern*Home 7:30 PM Central Methodist (MO) @Hastings Tourney 09/18 Briar Cliff* Sioux Falls* Mount Marty* *denotes conference game The differences is banking are black and white.
