We drove cars (8 members chosen by ticket number) down the middle isle of Spaghetti Warehouse, with 4 members winning their racing cars. We had surprise gifts won by members who could answer tough questions about everything, I'm told the questions were too tough. hahahaha A balloon lady wound through making some lovely flowers for the ladies, and a very large one for me. We had a great turnout for Toys for Tots, they will be heading to MacDill AFB to help the families that keep us safe, have a good Christmas. Last but not least, we had a great gift exchange. Having to use a smaller space made it more fun. I hope everyone enjoyed the party. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! (1) After bolting it on and looking at it, I decided I didn’t like how tall it was and how it went over the top of the quarter panels. (2) I cut the spoiler down and filled the area in with fiberglass mat. (3) The next step was filler and a lot of block sanding. (4) I wanted it to look like it came from the factory one piece, so it was bolted and I used fiberglass mat to attach it to the rear hatch. Next will be a lot of bodywork, block sanding and priming. (5) I wanted to clean up the engine compartment so all the holes were welded and ground. (6) They don’t make replacement V8 motor mounts, so we made our own. Also, the transmission tunnel was modified to clear an AOD transmission and all the holes filled in the firewall. After a lot of bodywork I sprayed a couple coats of SPI black epoxy followed with two coats of SPI Turbo urethane www.gillisrestorations.com primer. 727-847-7973 Rusty Email: rusty@gillisrestorations.com The Pony Express Page 4 MCT Member Mustangs of the Month John & Darlene Esposito’s Pair of Ponies Relatively new Mustang Club of Tampa members, John and Darlene Esposito have jumped into the hobby with all four feet. John is a retired Police Officer with 18 years of service and Darlene is a Florida Certified Animal Control Officer employed at The Humane Society of Tampa Bay and manages the Spay and Neuter program for Feral Cats. “Back In 2009, Darlene had been diagnosed with Stage II breast cancer. After a long battle, and many surgeries she was given a clean bill of health. Feeling she had a new lease on life, I surprised her with a 2010 Mustang convertible. Just looking, we found the right car at the right price. Soon after, we discovered the many after market upgrades and the fun got started.” “We had never had owned a Mustang before, but after seeing numerous custom Breast Cancer Mustangs, that’s when the work began. Over the past few years, custom paint, exhaust, tuner and wheels slowly took the gray pony over to become a Breast Cancer Survivor car. As I like to say, she was rebuilt and so was her Mustang. The mods continue to this day.” “Once her car was near completion, the search for mine began. Unsure of the “NEW” redesigned 2015/16 Mustangs I happened to see a 2016 fastback, white with blue racing stripes I immediately loved the car. Still unsure on this next generation of pony car, I cautiously took it for a test drive. I had heard all about Eco-Boost and this new V-6 power. But once I drove it, I screamed to Darlene “THIS IS IT! THIS IS MY NEXT CAR!!” I was sold. Performance was a 100% for me. We found our 2016 by accident and it was love at first sight and drive.” Darlene’s 2010 Convertible: Sterling Gray Metallic w/a custom Pink Breast Cancer Awareness paint scheme, 4.0L V6 modified, Automatic trans, true Dual Exhausts, custom tuner, BBK cold air intake, chrome Bullitt wheels, about 300hp. John’s 2016 Fastback: V-6 Eco-Boost, 310 hp, Oxford White w/blue stripes, Roush cold air intake, Factory equipped. No mods yet. “In October 2014, Darlene and I attended a car show at Bill Currie Ford put on by MCT. Seeing the great cars and great people we decided this would be fun. At that point we were both hooked and we joined right there and then at the show. Over the past year, we found that the MCT has the best members and do the most and awesome charity work in the Tampa Bay area.” “With most of the mods completed on the Convertible we will continue to take trips to the beach, and in the future Darlene intends to enter Car shows, Cruises, and Poker Runs around the state. As for the ‘16, a Custom Tuner and some small upgrades will be in the future. Since the convertible is garaged, we have got it down to a few hours a week, however the ‘16 lives outside, so it gets numerous hours a week before a show. Darlene won an Award of Excellence at the MCT Mustang & Shelby Round Up Show in November, 2015 and I won in the 2015-2016 class at the ‘Ponies Under The Palms’ show November 22, 2015. Recently, the maiden trip for the 2016 was to West Palm Beach and Miami. This next generation of Mustang performed flawlessly, even at 120 MPH!” Photo Credits - John Esposito Page 5 The Pony Express Secrets of the Shelby G.T. 500 The first two years of Shelby Mustang production, 1965-66, were the golden years of Carroll Shelby's efforts to turn a comfortable pony car into a sharp-handling, raceready GT. By the time the bigengine GT500 joined the small block GT350 for the 1967 model year, there were signs of strain in Shelby's relationship with Ford. Here are a few lesser-known facts: Comparatively Few Were Actually Built by Shelby in California. The GT500 came out at a time when Ford was seeking to exercise closer supervision over its partnership with Shelby. A little more than a year into the run, Ford moved production from Shelby's operation in Los Angeles to the A.O. Smith Factory (of water heater fame) in Michigan, where the blue oval people could keep a closer watch on things. Thus, the last two years of GT500 production did not take place at Carroll Shelby's shop. It was briefly the car of Agent 86, Maxwell Smart. For a few episodes in season four of the classic spy comedy, " Get Smart," the title character drove a blue/tan GT500KR convertible. Buick became a sponsor the following season and the Shelby disappeared in favor of the mini-Corvette Opel GT. A single convertible was built for 1967. It was intended that a convertible would be offered for the 1967 model year but the aforementioned production shift and other issues prevented this from occurring until the 1968 model year. Just one convertible was built for 1967. A single example was built with a GT40 427 racing engine. Perhaps the most exciting and certainly one of the most valuable GT500s was the single 7-liter GT40-engined "Super Snake" that Shelby personally demonstrated to drum up interest that was not forthcoming. The car sold at the Mecum Indy sale in 2013 for $1.3 million. Unsold 1969s were sold as 1970 models. There was actually no new production for the 1970 model year, but as there were almost 800 leftover 1969 models, Ford successfully petitioned the federal government to allow the cars to be re-VINed as 1970 models. A chin spoiler distinguishes what became the last of the classic GT500s, which were sold after Ford's agreement with Shelby had terminated. Article submitted by John Esposito Update: 2017 Shelby GT 500 We’ve seen and gawked over the GT350 and GT350R, but big brother is still coming. Ford Performance is hard at work on the new GT500, according to fresh reports from Detroit. The powerplant is unknown at this time, but we are hearing that this engine could be “well over the 700HP mark”, all while “breathing through a straw”. Take it for what it’s worth, but we perceive that as a hint towards Forced Induction (low boost from the factory?) We are also hearing that Ford is working ‘very hard’ on Direct-Injection for this new power plant. Could we see Ford’s first production 5.0 EcoBoost make its debut in the GT500? After all, that’s what the people want. And it’s no secret that Ford has been testing a 5.0 Twin Turbo development mule as recently as a few months ago. Regardless, we expect this new beast to depart from the now highlydiscussed Flat Plane Crank. Traditionally, the GT350 (and GT350R) has always been aimed towards track use, while the GT500 is more of an earth -rotating, straight line, freeway runner. As far as power delivery, as you all know, the Hellcat is producing just north of 700HP, so we would be shocked if Ford doesn’t take it one step further. “Our new SVT Halo Mustang will have more HP than the Hellcat” claims a Ford rep from a recent CNN interview. Hold on to your butts. The Pony Express Credit: www.horsepowerkings.com Page 6 Ponies Under the Palms Show The Mustang Club of West Central Florida held its 24th Annual ‘Ponies under the Palms’ Mustang and Ford Show on Sunday, November 22. Although the threat of rain kept some registrants from attending, the day still turned out well with the new show location at picturesque Main Street in Lakewood Ranch. A portion of the proceeds were to benefit two wonderful charities, TideWell Hospice and Southeastern Guide Dogs. Mustang and Ford enthusiasts from throughout the region competed for awards. MCT members Randy & Patsy Dwyer won for Best Roush, Saleen & Shelby. John & Darlene Esposito, won the award for Best 2015/2016 Mustang.
