Sincerely, Gayle Haller, 2011-2012 President Melinda Burge, Executive Director 1 Who We Are Mission The Community Fund of Bronxville Eastchester Tuckahoe, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation organized to provide funding and support for local agencies serving the health, education and welfare needs of local residents. History Beginnings The Community Fund of Bronxville Eastchester Tuckahoe, Inc. was founded on October 2, 1919, as The Community Welfare Fund, Inc., to support Lawrence Hospital, The Associated Charities of Eastchester, and other charitable agencies or welfare work in the community. The Fund served the community during the Depression and World War II, providing basic support to families and the war effort. During the war, The Community Fund also raised money for the USO and the National War Fund. Transition From 1919-1979, The Community Welfare Fund underwent several name changes. In the 1940’s and early 1950’s, the name became The Community Chest (the Red Feather for those who remember). In 1954, the name was changed to the United Fund of Bronxville Eastchester Tuckahoe, Inc. Later, in 1965, the organization affiliated with the United Fund of Westchester which became known as the United Way of Westchester in 1978. On July 1, 1980, The United Fund of Bronxville Eastchester Tuckahoe severed its affiliation with the United Way of Westchester to ensure that all funds raised locally would remain in the three communities. It re-established itself under its original charter of 1919 and changed its name to The Community Fund of Bronxville Eastchester Tuckahoe, Inc., thereby reaffirming the organization’s original objectives. The Present The Community Fund currently supports 26 local social service agencies and community programs which provide necessary services to our community. In addition to funding, The Community Fund also provides administrative support to the agencies through on-going visits, consultations, workshops and forums. 2 h.com Photo courtesy of Patc 3 Where The Money Goes… Community Fund dollars support agencies that provide services to Bronxville, Eastchester and Tuckahoe. The prom, which was hosted by the Bronxville Youth Council, provided a magical evening for all in attendance and paved the way for new collaborations between the two groups. Education Maxwell Institute’s Community Education Specialist, Kimberly Wildey provides children and teens with the tools necessary to make smart choices when it comes to drugs, alcohol and smoking. “Because of you, I saved a life” a former student told Ms. Wildey, “I remembered what you said – know to follow your instincts and call for help. Even though my friends didn’t want me to, I did, and EMS said I saved his life.” 5 The Grants 2011-12 Senior Services Eastchester Senior Programs & Services - Eastchester Centers & Services . . . . . . . . . . $42,000 Senior Citizens Council - Bronxville & Tuckahoe Senior Centers . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $30,000 Gramatan Village - Fee Subsidy Program . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $10,000 Senior Services Subtotal . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .$82,000 Health Care Services EVAC - Ambulance Purchase Program . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $40,000 Lawrence Hospital Center - Cancer Survivorship Program . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $20,000 Lawrence Hospital Center - Community Flu Shot Program . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $10,000 Westchester End of Life Coalition - Health Proxy Program & Support . . . . . . . . . . . . $5,000 Health Care Services Subtotal . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $75,000 Counseling Services The Bereavement Center - Support of the Bronxville Tree House . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $35,000 Cancer Support Team - Cancer Counseling & Support . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $25,000 The Counseling Center - Fee Subsidy Program . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $30,000 Victims Assistance Services - Crisis Intervention & Prevention Programs . . . . . . . . . . $18,000 The Maxwell Institute - Fee Subsidy Program . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $15,000 Counseling Services Subtotal . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $123,000 Education & Prevention Services Andrus Children’s Center - ECDC-Tuition Assistance . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $16,000 College Careers Fund - College Support/Counseling . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $18,000 D.A.R.E. Lt. Margaret Belles – 961-4800 11 Commonly Asked Questions Why a Community Fund? The Community Fund was founded in 1919 to support qualified agencies and programs that provide vital services within Bronxville, Eastchester and Tuckahoe. These services help thousands of our neighbors each year at little or no expense to those least able to pay. With declining government support, these agencies need the help of the Fund more than ever. The Community Fund is largely staffed and administered by members of our own community volunteering their time and talents. Your donation to The Community Fund is a direct investment in the quality of life in your community. It truly is “local giving for local needs”. Why should I give to The Community Fund? In today’s economy, human service needs are growing while government funding sources are diminishing. Each year, the Fund is asked to provide funding in excess of what we have collected. A contribution would enable the Fund to have a greater impact on the growing needs in our community. Why give to The Community Fund rather than directly to agencies of my choice? We would encourage you to also give to your favorite agencies! But, there are many reasons to give to the Fund too: • A contribution to The Community Fund ensures that the dollars you donate go towards the specific programs that provide services directly to the Bronxville, Eastchester and Tuckahoe communities. • Some of our member agencies that provide significant services are not as well known or do not receive adequate funding. We ensure that these agencies that provide critical services to community members continue to receive support. • The Fund does the due-diligence work for you! Annually, all agencies undergo an on-site review of services and financial viability to ensure that they are operating effectively and that your dollars are spent judiciously. • Each year, other community organizations come to the Fund and ask for “one-time” grants in order to provide a new service or handle an emergency. We are there for them during a time of need. Because of our relationships in the community, we are in a unique position to know and address ongoing needs. What needs do we have? The need for services and support cuts across all social and economic segments. And these needs often occur unexpectedly during times of financial or physical hardship. Whether it is services for the seniors, our youth or families in crisis, The Community Fund agencies and programs meet an increasing need for their services right here in or own community. How can I help beyond my contribution? Join us! We have volunteer opportunities in fundraising, evaluations, administration and more. Call Melinda Burge, Executive Director, at 337-8808 to learn more. 12 How Can I Contribute? A contribution to The Community Fund makes a positive impact on the lives of people living here in our community. Through the monies raised in our Annual Campaign each fall and our Golf Outing every spring, The Fund is able to allocate grants to the social service agencies and community programs meeting the needs of our friends and neighbors. Every dollar raised here stays here! You can make a tax-deductible contribution to the Annual Campaign by: • Contribution of cash, check or credit card. We accept personal checks, American Express, Visa and Mastercard. • Contribution of Securities Wire transfer of securities is the simplest way to donate. Please contact the office for instructions (337-8808) and request your broker to advise the office when a transfer is made. • Coordination of Employer Matching Gift Inquire whether your business will provide a matching contribution. • Designation of your United Way Contribution can be made by checking the designation box on your Employee United Way Designation Form and clearly specifying our full name, address, and phone. Important Information for United Way Designations: • Please send our office a copy of your completed Employee United Way Designation Form so we are aware of your gift. This will serve as your pledge card. • Lump sum contributions are preferable, as the United Way administrative costs deducted from your gift are significantly higher for payroll deductions. Credit card contributions are accepted on our website: www.thecommunityfund.org ch.com Photo courtesy of Pat 13 Who Supports Us The Community Fund thanks the more than 1,000 families, individuals and businesses who contributed their support in 2010-2011 to our community’s agencies and programs including: Silver Patron ($10,000+) Emily & John Corry ** Mrs. Richard A.
