McGUIRE, Tournament Director MARCH 6-7-8-9-10-12-20 BOSTON GARDEN March 6, 1979 ccept oar welcome to rhpre are no iu , ur the thanks once again the ye« after year. A. Mooney president pAM:rs —--==== TWELFTH ANNUAL Eastern Massachusetts High School Hockey Tournament LOFTS J. McGUIRE TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR By STEVE HARRIS Boston Herald American The memories, apparently, become more profound as the years pass. Three heroes of the state high school hockey tournament the first, the latest and the greatest. The memories. Jack Garrity was first. It was 36 years ago, the first Massachusetts tournament. It was a hastityorgani/.ed affair, born out of a two-year old New England tourney. Medford and Melrose met for the title, on March 12, 1943. "The game was played between periods of a Boston Olympics-New York Rovers Eastern League game," Garrity remembers. "They'd play one period, then we'd come on." A Boston Garden crowd of 9084 looked on as Medford's Garrity, playing despite a heavy cold, fired home a 25-foot wrist shot at 5:51 of a second, sudden death overtime. The Mustangs had a 2-1 victory and the schoolboy skaters had their fust hero. Garrity would go on to an AllAmerica career at Boston University and a place in the 1948 U.S. Olympic team, but the Garden memories remained special. "In those days it was everything," he says. "This was the big thing. To be in the Boston Garden, to play on the Garden ice. Gee/., you lived for that." Garrity was the tourney's first hero, Nccdham's Robbie Rorek was unquestionably the greatest. For him, the memories are a little different. "So many good things happened to me during my tournament days," 1979 EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS SCHOOLBOY HOCKEY COMMITTEE WILLIAM REID, CHAIRMAN Boston Schools LOFTS J. McGUIRE, DIRECTOR MEMBERS ELLIOTT MacSWAN, Barnstable WILLIAM DEMPSEY, Weymouth BURTON MacARTHUR, Triton Regional DONALD SEAGER, Dedham FR. PAUL PHINN, Catholic Schools JOHN FAWCETT, Stoneham ROBERT BARRETT, Hingham JOHN ELLIOTT ROUNDY, Ipswich RICHARD LILLIS, North Easton FRED GIBSON, Everett TOM MORAN, Boston Schools DONAHUE, Nauset Regional EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS 1979 HOCKEY TOURNAMENT COMMITTEE Seated, left to right: Elliott Roundy (Ipswich), Dick Lillis (North Easton), Dr. William Reid (Boston), L. J. McGuire (Director), Bill Dempsey (Weymouth). Standing: Fr. Phinn {Catholic League), Elliott MacSwan (Barnstable), Robert Barrett (Hingham), Don Seager (Dedham), Jack Donahue (Nauset), Bert McArthur (Triton). Missing: Tom Moran (Boston), Fred Gibson (Everett), John Fawcett (Stoneham). Glimpses of 78 Twelfth Annual Ftorek said recently. "Probably the biggest goat thai I remember, oddly, was the sixth goal against Melrose my junior year (the '69 final, won by Needham, 6-3). "It was late in (he game and il didn't really mean much, but it was a nice goal. I was sliding on the ice and the puck went upstairs with one hand. A pretty nice goal. "The game that was probably built up the most was my senior year, against Maiden Catholic. This guy was supposed to cover me man-to-man. I can't remember his name, I should be able to, but 1 can't. Anyway, there was a big to-do about him covering me. We won the game something like 12-0." The names and numbers arc a little hazy for Ftorek, but it's understandable he can't recall Paul O'Neil's name, or that the score was 11-1. There've been a lot of names-and particularly a lot of numbers-since for Ftorek, whose accomplishments in the World Hockey Association have made him perhaps the greatest American-born player ever. "What I remember most was going back out on the ice after we won my senior year. My dad and Mr. (Rockets coach John) Chambers kind of gave me a hug. And the disappointment. Il suddenly hits you that it's the last time you're going to be playing hockey with these guys. I remember siding in the locker room with my head down and just feeling awful. Really awful." It was a feeling the latest of the Garden's heroes hasn't yet experienced. A year ago, Burlington defenscman Chuck Robinson sunk the 40-foot slap shot that gave the Red Devils a 5-4, twoovertime t r i u m p h over Matignon in the Division I final. For Robinson, a key again this year to Burlington's tournament hopes, the moment is etched clearly in rememberance- but not yet clouded by sentimentality. "Yes, it was my biggest goal," he says, "but I don't know, it's like just another game. You can't make it too big. The puck'! Ycl\ it was given to me. . .but I gave it to the goalie." Ten, 20 years from now, that puck and the memories—will mean a lot more to Chuck Robinson. (Continued from page 5) TOURNEY TOPICS-Tlm year's field is the biggest ever: 58 teams, including 27 in Division 1 and 31 in Division 2. Yet many coaches were not happy with the new selection format, under which non-league games counted for the first time. "My opinion," said tournament director Lofts (Mickey) McGuire, "is that only league games should count." . . . A Quik Quiz, a snap for any true fan: I. He led Lowell to state titles as player and coach, now he's a top EC AC coach. 2. This future Bruin accumulated seven goals and two assists in one '74 tourney game. 3. Four of 1971 champ Arlington's players made the alltourney team. Name them. 4. A future Canadien, he won a '75 semifinal with a 50-footer with one second left in regulation. 5. His team was knocked out in t h e '75 quarters, but he was the alltourney goalie. 6. A member of that '75 all-tourney team, many t h i n k he'll be on the NHL's All-Rookie team next year. Answers below. * * * If you could get a Las Vegas line on such things, few people would be better at handicapping the LMass tournament t h a n Boston College assistant coach Steve Cedorchuk. His views on ihe teams to beat and the players to watch. . . "I'd say Matignon and Burlington are in a class by themselves. If St. John's Prep can gel some scoring balance, they'll be tough. For sleepers, I'd say Acton-Boxboro, Saugus, Norwood or Winthrop. 1 think Matignon has three of the top eight kids in the state: Tommy O'Regan, George White and Jerry August. August, I think he's going to the National Hockey League. Bobby Brooke of Acton is tremendous, too." Cedorchuk went on to name St. John's sophomore Bob Carpenter, "nearly as good as anyone already." The other names that popped up, each a fine college prospect: Natick's Steve Rich, Saugus' Paul Nigro, Jack Fahcy and Matt Shramek of Burlington, Danny Morgan and Miles Boulter of Winthrop, Kim Langway of Randolph, Robin Monleon of Austin Prep and Bill McDooough of Stoneham. His top goalies? Bill O'Connor of Billerica and Phil Ternullo of defending Division 2 champ Arlington Catholic, which Cedorchuk rates a co-favorite with Barnstablc and Falmouth. Oh yes, the qui/. answers. . . . 1. BC's Len Ceglarski, who played on and coached Walpole winners. 2. Bob Miller, who bombarded Don Rosco in a first round game. 3. Kevin Carr, goalie Chuck Cremans, Brian Mulcahy and Jay Shaughnessy. Curiously, neither Bill Corkery nor Mike Flanagan were named. 4. Randolph's Rud Langway. 5. Weymouth North's Mark Holdcn. whose 42-saves, threc-OT loss to Maiden Catholic is considered by many the greatest goallending performance in tourney history. 6. Ralph Cox. an Archbishop Williams star of '75 and All-America al New Hampshire. Massachusetts Secondary School Principals Association The Massachusetts Secondary School Principals Association is composed of heads of t h e Commonwealth public and Catholic secondary schools. M.S.S.P.A. is sponsor of the Hastern MassachusettsState Hockey Tournament held at Boston Garden on March 6, 7, 8. 9, 10, 12, 20. Besides the hockey tournament, the responsibility for other types of competition includes cross-country and soccer in the fall, b a s k e t b a l l , indoor track, wrestling, swimming, and gymnastics as well as hockey during the winter and baseball, outdoor track, tennis and golf in the spring. Responsibility extends to the regulation of all sports eligibility, all-star and other non-season competitions as well as to the many other facets of athletics. Until the M.S.S.P.A. took over regulation and operation of multiple school athletic events in Massachusetts, the situation approached near chaos. Everybody and anybody were r u n n i n g post-season games and tournaments. Seasons overlapped and conflicted. In general there was mass confusion. The M.S.S.P.A. took over, organized and installed rules and regulations. School events were run by school people. Athletes had to be school students in good standing in their m a r k s and citizenship. The M.S.S.P.A. sports credo is that athletics are a privilege, not just inherited. M.S.S.P.A. is. however, m u c h more than an athletic organization. That can be deduced from its other committees which far outnumber those concerned w i t h athletics, all under direction of the Executive Board. The committees are Academic A f f a i r s . Educational Policies, Music, Drama, Forensics and Debating; Citizenship. State High School Equivalency, Professional Standards. Legislative, Science Fair, Officials Fees, Scholarship. National Honor Society. School and College Relations, External Testing, N.E. Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, Student Council as well as discussional groups. Thus it is apparent that everything about everything pertaining to secondary schools in Massachusetts is the interest of M.S.S.P.A. However, sports led to the formation of the M.S.S.P.A. which took the initiative and brought order out of chaos. 16 This is an organi/ation of voluntary members, a democratic and permissive body operated with democratic representation across the state and parliamentary procedures whose members abide by the regulations of the organization through their own initiative in membership. The income from t o u r n a m e n t s such as this Boston Ciarden competition, after the competing schools arc reimbursed for expenses in keeping with a policy t h a t no school shall suffer financially from such competition, cover expenses of the so-called 'loser 1 sports like cross country, indoor and outdoor state track meets and competitions in soccer, s w i m m i n g and wrestling as well as those in golf, t e n n i s and baseball. It goes, too. into an annual scholarship fund distributed proportionately to q u a l i f y i n g students throughout the Commonwealth and for science fair and festivals in music and drama as well as other programs which benefit students — male and female — in the state's secondary schools. The M.S.S.P.A. is the Watchdog of school sports and the Guardian of school academics. It also is the staunch friend of school students.
