Issue #19 Fall 2012 KEY POINTS TO PONDER 239 Charlotte St. Saint John, NB E2L 2K1 506-634-6888 www.keyindustries.ca KIWANIS DONATES $5000 Tom Gallant, President of the Saint John Kiwanis Club presents a cheque to Christine Evans, President/CEO of Key in the amount of $5,000. Over the past 10 years, the Kiwanis Club has donated $75,000 to Key Industries. THANK YOU to the Saint John Kiwanis Club for helping us grow our programs and expand our services. Beginning in May of 2012 Key Industries took on the task of finding an alternative source of training and through extensive research decided to partake in The Mandt System Training. The Mandt System training emphasizes building healthy relationships in a work setting. Through this training, it is taught how to deescalate situations using your prior knowledge and experiences with the individual to get them back to their personal best when there is an off day present. The staff of Key Industries have periodically been taking this training since the month of July and nearly all staff are now certified in the de-escalation techniques. We have already noticed more positive and healthy relationships being formed. Congratulations to all staff members that have taken the initiative and shown interest in the new training. Pictured above is the first group of employees to take the course. Left to Right: Mandt Instructor Katelyn Dyer, Lynnette Cooke, Joe Carr, Alina Cartwright, Mike Dobbelsteyn and Cindy Magarvey. Key Industries Hosts NB PC Party Caucus Meeting On Friday, July 16th, Key Industries hosted a very successful caucus meeting at Key Industries. In my absence, Nargis and Rod spoke to the group for 15 minutes about Key Industries and presented a PowerPoint to them. This meeting was attended by the following: Minister Blaine Higgs, Quispamsis Glen Savoie, MLA, Saint John Fundy Glen Tait, MLA, Saint John, East Carl Killen, MLA, Saint John Harbour Minister Trevor Holder, Saint John Portland Dorothy Shephard, MLA, Saint John Lancaster Ted Flemming, MLA, Rothesay The Caucus enjoyed a beautiful continental breakfast and a lunch of lasagna and salad. Rod had an opportunity to speak to Blaine Higgs personally after the meeting. This was a great opportunity for Key Industries Movie review: “Gundam WinG: EndlEss Waltz” This movie is a sequel to the Megahit TV anime Gundam Wing. It is also a prequel of sorts because it reveals the origins of the five main heroes, the Gundam Pilots: Heero, Trowa, Quatre, Duo and Wufei. It takes place after colony 196, a full year after the end of the events of the television series, and peace reigns supreme thanks to the efforts of the Gundam Pilots and their giant robots. Unfortunately, not everyone is happy with the idea of peace. That point is hammered home when Relena Darlian, the on-again-off-again girlfriend of Heero, who is now a respected diplomat, is kidnapped by a space colony with the goal of taking over the Earth. The main villain in this movie is Dakim Barton, the original backer of the Pilots and Operation Meteor. Now, while Quatre retrieves their Gundams, Heero, Duo and Trowa, along with their allies, try to stop Dakim’s plan. His plan is to install his granddaughter, Mariemaia, as the Earth’s next ruler. When that plan comes up short, they need their Gundams, which leads to the awesome scene in which Heero boards Wing Zero from a moving shuttle in space to face the outcast, Wufei, while the others take on Dakim’s men. All seems hopeless until Heero blasts the hell out of the hideout. That is when Mariemaia and Wufei turn against Dakim and he goes insane when the public turns against him. He tries to kill Relena, but Mariemaia gets nonfatally shot instead. He tries again but is killed by a rogue soldier. After those events, the Pilots, having restored peace, and having no more need for their weapons of mad destruction (take that, Bush), destroy them. “And from that point on in history, mobile suits, including the Gundams, are never seen again. Roll credits. In my opinion, I would recommend this movie to not only anime fans, but to sci-fi fans as well. The story is great, the animation is beautiful, the characters are well-portrayed and the music is cool. Watch this movie! You will be pleasantly surprised! Mark Hughes Farewell to Teri-Lyn On Oct 19 we met for lunch to say Goodbye to someone who has become an important member of our “Key Industries Family”…Teri-Lyn Chenhall. Teri-Lyn has graced the halls of Key Industries in Sales & Production for the past 8 years. As she follows her heart and joins her husband Mark to explore new opportunities on “The Rock” we, the staff of Key would like to acknowledge her valued qualities that inspire us all...her loyalty, her laughter, her generous ways, for being a truly caring soul who has the natural tendency to wish well for others! She will be missed by all and more by some…we look forward to hearing from her new adventures and to many future visits! -Anne Doiron On September 20th, the learners in the Workplace Essential Skills Program were invited to participate in the Southwest NB Regional WES Olympics put on by the Department of Post-Secondary Education, Training & Labour. This event was attended by many learners who have completed WES programs from St. Stephen to Sussex and in between. It was a fun filled morning in which the learners participated in 9 essential skill challenges, with an Olympic theme. Some of the challenges included having to use oral communication skills to get a blindfolded team-mate to accomplish a task; a test on computer terminology, translating measurements from standard to metric, and so on. At the end of the games the class got to enjoy snacks. The class did not come home empty-handed. Each group won an award: Team Joshminex (Josh, Jasmine & Alex) won “Happiest Team” Team Jascoris (Jason, Scott & Chris) won “Nicest Team” Team Tabephohn (Tabitha, Stephane & John) won “Best Team Spirit” Shown below are the trophies won by our class. Farewell Glenda Key Industries is very appreciative of the generous support received from MindCare New Brunswick Skate to Care for a grant of $6000.00 to go towards supporting an initiative ‘Gaining Workforce Employability Skills Development’. This initiative will be delivered by Wendy Bradford as part of the Life Skills Program. The objective of ‘Gaining Workforce Employability Skills’ is to prepare adults with an intellectual disability or who have a mental illness with the tools to succeed in the workplace by delivering a multi-module program consisting of 230 hours of classroom instruction. This program is offered to 15 learners with barriers to employment. The focus of this initiative is develop an Action Plan and to address competency and soft skills that can be transferred to today’s competitive labour market. Key Industries and the 15 learners who benefitted from the “Gaining Workforce Employability Skills” program are very grateful for MindCare’s support in giving the opportunity to help move the learners forward with their personal goals of being job ready and employable. Your grant of $6000.00 has helped change lives and given the learners a leg up on being more assertive and prepared in their search for employment. Phase Four of the WES Program Completed, Phase Five Begins. Glenda started working as an Educational Facilitator at Key Industries on Feb 6, 2006. Glenda’s many contributions to Key include the formation of our library that is used daily by many clients. Glenda streamlined the academic assessment process at Key. Glenda also began the therapeutic and popular knitting corner, where over the years we have seen die-hard knitters making scarves, hats and slippers to be donated to the Empty Stocking Fund. We can’t forget her dedication and commitment to the Memory book, which was a huge undertaking. Glenda did the formatting, editing and researching stories to go into the Memory Book, which gathered Key’s history from 19732009. We would like to recognize the contribution Glenda has made to Key Industries by identifying the gifts she has brought with her. Glenda has always committed 110% to the learners in seeing that they take learning serious in her no non-sense approach. She is an excellent writer, speaker and story teller, who captivates her audience with her expressions & tone. It is with great sadness that we see Glenda off. We will all miss her. Please remember when one door closes another door opens. Left to Right: Jasmine, John, Alex, Stephane, Josh, Tabitha, Chris, Scott & trainer Matt Wallace. Missing: Jason. On October 26th, the 4th installment of the WES program came to a close. The learners spent 15 weeks working on their employability and literacy skills. The fifth phase is set to begin on November 13, 2012. Bill Kearns, Vice Chairman for Key Industries Board of Directors (left) presents an HONORARY MEMBERSHIP to Michael Gauthier, (right). Michael Gauthier is a Past Chairman and served on the Board of Directors for 5 years from 1997—2002. “Thank You Michael for giving of your time and your passion for making our community a better place.” Christine Evans, President/CEO During the weekend of July 28-29, 2012, the first annual Harbour ConFusion convention came to Saint John, NB at the Holiday Inn Express. Over 200 fans of sci-fi, fantasy, anime and other “geeky” genres converged at one location. Among those attending were myself, Jeff ‘Jyger’ Phillips, Jacques Chiasson and Matthew Bullock. I had to wait over three months for this event and it was worth the wait. I got to watch and participate in several panels and games, including learning how to use a light saber, learning about the history of video games, and learning about real-life applications of Iron Man’s technology, among other things. I even got to buy some souvenirs. One anime DVD, “Ah My Goodness: Flights of Fancy volume 01”, a Doctor Who Sonic Screwdriver, 2 packs of Yu-gioh- cards, a macros model kit, plus lots of photos on my camera. Matthew and Jacques won trophies in the costume contest. It was an overall good experience, and another convention is going to happen next year from Aug 9-11, 2013. I get to see all of my friends again at that time. -Mark Hughes Staff member Denise Colpitts (Elite Support Services) is an animal lover and, along with her 2 cats, now has 2 dogs. “Stanley” is a 10 year old German Shepherd-Lab mix who enjoys playing fetch and the odd Milk Bone. “Izzy” is the brand new addition to Denise’s furry family and is only 2 months old! Izzy is a Bichon-Frise-Yorkshire Terrier cross. She is eagerly waiting for Denise to let her try the bigger sized Milk Bones. Stay tuned for a picture next summer of Stanley and Izzy in their Disney’s Princess swimming pool! From the President Christine Evans Roan & Champa Matt Wallace adopted 2 ferrets in October. Ferrets are part of the weasel family. They sleep 18 hours a day and play full tilt for the remaining 6 hours. They are very entertaining. They have a 4floor cage, tubes to run through and cat toys. They are very mischievous and often hide Matt’s things. I want to thank our Elite Support Services Manager for taking on the position as “Mandt Trainer” for Key Industries. Over the past few months she has been providing staff with their certification in being able to positively address negative behaviors before they escalate. Congratulations to all those that participated. We will miss Glenda Thornton and Teri-Lynn Chenhall at Key Industries and wish them the best in their future endeavors. We were happy to be chosen to host the Southern NB Caucus Meeting this past July. The support we receive from our MLA, Carl Killen, Ministers, and other Members of the Legislative Assembly, is greatly appreciated. Thank You for recognizing that what we do makes a difference in our community. On October 26th I attended the WES (Workplace Essential Skills) Graduation held here at Key Industries. The pride that the learners exhibited brought tears to my eyes. We are never too old to learn and this program is a testament to that fact. Congratulations! On November 7th, Lois Poirier and I, attended the annual business awards luncheon held by CCRW (Canadian Council for Rehabilitation and Work). Much to our surprise, Key Industries received the “Most Supportive Community Partnership” Award. We are grateful that our community partners recognize us as a valuable resource to the community.
