ApHC Board of Directors Meeting – Moscow, ID March 12-14, 2009 Notes submitted by Sharon Marshall I attended the ApHC Board of Directors Meeting held in Moscow, ID on March 12-14, 2009. While the meetings could be a bit dry, the company of fellow Appaloosa enthusiasts was fantastic. These meetings are generally attended by a handful of dedicated ApHC members. The first day of meetings heralded a new twist – a round table discussion to help define what the ApHC is, where it wants to be, potential options on addressing the most pressing needs of the ApHC as an entity and the general membership and ended with a presentation from the Des Moines group regarding possible relocation of the National Championship and Youth World Championship to Des Moines. Day 2 was comprised of Director Committee Meetings. Many of these committees had met prior to the meeting via teleconference where a significant number of motions had already been passed and would come before the General Board Meeting. The following is a synopsis of the committee presentations: Breeders Committee Proposed a Breeders Award with cumulative years as an active Appaloosa Breeder split in 10 year awards Innocent Third Party Proposal Trail Nez Perce Foundation proposal – tabled to July meeting Proposal to split the Trail committee internally into Competitive and Recreational Trail subcommittees Executive Race Total purse of more than $6 million available to Appaloosas Regional Club several proposals regarding the Regional Qualification for the World \Championships were discussed Marketing Megatron at the World show – sale of continually run advertising spots Better job of promoting Winners (ie World’s Best, Iron Horse, APEX) Announced the launching of Liberty Mutual Insurance (auto/home owners, life) as a benefit for all ApHC members Possible Health Insurance Carrier available for all ApHC members Anticipated Group Liability Insurance for Regional Clubs 50 International All activities are being funded by USLGE funds! Propose an International Day at the Nationals and World Shows Possible expansion into China and Russia World Equestrian Games in Kentucky 2010 – Marketing at the global level, funds available from the USLGE for stalls/breed demos and ceremonies? The International committee completed 23 activities ($52,000) this year and have committed to 27 activities ($45,000) for 2009. Show National Show Schedule – swapped the Youth week to the 2nd week due to New York students having mandatory testing the last week of June. Proposed small increase in National/World class fees, Enter 9 classes and get 1 free National Championship Show Site Selection: Des Moines, Tulsa, Ft. Worth and Jackson Further discussion of World qualifying proposals Planning and Review Form a Journal Oversight Committee Proposal for Ad Hoc Committee Index APEX program review Update By-Law Language Refining of Hall Of Fame Procedures Finance Budget Review Nominal increase in fees for Nationals and World Tevis Cup advertising Judges 8 New Judges approved Sale $24,000 net $9000 Stallion Service Sale Propose Active Online Bidding for the World Sale 51 Youth Proposed Youth Lease Program – tabled Continuation of Youth Exchange Program Non-Pro Adding Masters Trail, Reining and Western Riding Novice Program revamping Rules During the General Board of Directors Meeting, the 2 different regional club show proposals were voted down. In addition, several motions were tabled regarding complaints/legal counsel/ Disciplinary Hearings. The breed standard review and ACAAP Awards were also tabled until July, 2009. 66 individual new motions were then voted on. All motions will be printed in the June, 2009 Appaloosa Journal. In short, a tremendous amount of work was accomplished in a very short period of time. I escaped during one lunch to take a quick tour through the Appaloosa Museum. The newer portion of the museum is quite interesting regarding the Nez Perce tribe and Chief Joseph. Editor’s note: Sharon made a comment by this picture, “Yep, it was cold!” 52 Sharon Marshall sent us a number of pictures from her trip to Moscow, Idaho for the March ApHC Board Of Directors Meeting which we are happy to share here with our Sooner membership. March in Moscow, Idaho, (above) cold and all of 6 degrees one morning…...and SNOW! On the opposite page, Sharon stands in front of the large ApHC welcoming sign out in front of the ApHC grounds. Sharon says, “There really were round tables at the round table discussion. (left) George and Iola Hatley at home. (below) Even with a few health problems in recent months, George is still enthusiastic about meeting fellow Appaloosa enthusiasts. On the wall behind them is a painting of George on Hy Straw packing into the Seven Devils. Hy Straw is also the horse George rode when he completed the Tevis Cup. Retiring director, Dave Schjeldahl does a little serenading during a break. (below) Also in the picture, on the left is Director Jack Zuidema, and on the right, Director Dennis Dean. Remember, you can also view this newsletter, and several years of past Sooner newsletters online at www.sooner-aphc.com and just follow the links. 53 Above is a close up of the detail on the doors to the main entrance of the headquarters of the Appaloosa Horse Club in Moscow, Idaho, which is also pictured from a little farther back on the right. Pictured on the left is the area where the information on all the Hall Of Fame inductees is displayed. In our last issue, we ran a feature on Bill Cass and Colida, both of whom can be found listed in this display. On the opposite page, at the top, is a life size fiberglass horse painted by an artist from Spokane, and used to greet people in Spokane at the Museum Of Native American Cultures. The saddle is a silver parade saddle, circa 1930, made by Bohlin. There is also another saddle like this one in the reading library. Behind the horse’s head is the museum gift shop. 54 The saddle wall is a display of saddles used in various eras. The saddle closest to the camera is a Mexican saddle. While it isn’t all that old, the style is correct. The second saddle from the right end was won by Jackson Sundown, a famous Nez Perce, at the 1918 Pendleton Roundup for bronc riding. Several of the sets of chaps, hanging above the saddles, are from the Hatley family. Lynette is a member of the ApHC Board Of Directors, and also a director of the ApHC Museum. Jack Merrill made the metal horses on the wall (left) and the memorial walkway is below them. A bone saddle, a cradleboard, wooden and bone stirrups, horse neck collar in the near case, a parfleche, awl for digging camas, and a bone knife for fleshing hides in the rear case. The warbonnet pictured on the right is genuine, with eagle feathers, and belonged to a Nez Perce elder. The display case is brand new, and this is the first year the museum has been able to display the warbonnet the way it should be displayed, in an upright position.
