But our body’s ability to produce it starts to dip from our 20s, dropping at a rate of 1.5 per cent a year. 2 Loss of collagen in the dermis, combined with loss of moisture, causes early signs of ageing. This is made worse by UV rays, pollution, prolonged exposure to air-conditioned environment, stress, lack of sleep, smoking and other unhealthy habits. 3 Eating more chicken skin, fish skin and pig trotters will not help to “load up” on collagen as the molecules are too big to be properly absorbed by the body. Like sun protection, replenishing your collagen supply should be done on a daily basis. Look for supplements which boast micro-collagen peptides that can be more effectively absorbed by the body, such as Brand’s InnerShine Marine Collagen Essence Strip. Light, compact and with only 12 calories per strip of jelly, they’re easy to enjoy on-the-go. On top of the original Kyoho Grape, it’s now available in two new flavours – sweet-sour Acai Berry and citrusy Japanese Mikan. $28 for 10 strips. POP ART One of this season’s most in looks is the vivid lip paired with neat, minimal eyes and fresh, poreless skin. Here’s how you can achieve this modern classic with the latest products from Maybelline. SKIN Flawless skin is what ties this look together – the key is to keep it fresh and radiant, not thick and cakey with foundation. Maybelline’s Baby Skin Instant Pink Transformer ($19.90) is designed for just such a purpose. Combining antioxidant-rich cherry extract and vitamin C with lightreflecting pink pearl particles, it brightens and tones down yellowness instantly to give you a health, rosy glow. Use it on its own after moisturiser or as a base before foundation. EYES With bold lips, all the eyes need is definition. The Hyper Sharp Liner ($19.90) is Maybelline’s finest liquid liner yet, with a tip that measures a mere 0.01mm, down from the its previous version’s 0.05mm. So thin even novices can’t get it wrong, it’s also water-resistant and comes in three basic colours – black, soft black and brown. Available from May. LIPS Take your pick from 20 intense, long-lasting shades from Maybelline’s Color Show Lipcolor ($9.90), a collection of on-trend lippies straight off New York’s runways. The colours promise to stay fast despite heat and humidity, and have a moisturising formula to keep dryness at bay. Bed mate Fluffy pillows and a soft blanket are all well and good, but here’s another sleep essential: a hardworking night cream. Skin, like the rest of the body, has a circadian rhythm, a pattern of functioning over a 24-hour period. The time when we’re asleep is when skin repair, regeneration and absorption of nutrients is highest, but also water loss. To properly support skin’s nocturnal functions, Trilogy’s Rosapene Night Cream ($78) boasts antioxidant-rich ingredients like organic rosehip oil, lycopene from tomatoes and acai berry to counter the day’s environmental damage. Goji berry extract and manuka honey further helps to hydrate, repair and nourish. With a luxurious but fast-absorbing formula and a fragrance comprising frankincense, rose and geranium, it’s the perfect relaxing night-time ritual to get you prepped for bed. Level with me French brand Vichy’s latest research has found that good hydration isn’t just about how much water skin gets, but how well it’s distributed to the different zones that need it. Armed with this new knowledge, the brand has upgraded the serum and moisturisers from its popular Aqualia Thermal range to deliver more balanced, all-round hydration so skin stays fresh, smooth and plump all day. The new Aqualia Thermal Dynamic Hydration Power Serum ($52) and Light and Rich Creams($48 each) boast three kinds of energising sugars and Vichy Thermal Spa Water to provide even hydration and improve water distribution in skin. Drink up! Get Some Fresh Air Just as you’d touch up your makeup after lunch, your mane can do with a little refresher too to tackle the frizz, dryness and damage that sets in by midday. To make things easy-peasy, Sunsilk has launched two new leave-on creams that can be applied anytime, anywhere. Similar to super serums for skin, these non-sticky formulas contain soft styling polymers and haircare ingredients so you can revive and repair your hair all at once. Here’s when to use what: TO REPAIR DRY AND DAMAGED HAIR MODEL PHOTOS SHOWBIT.COM TO TAME FRIZZY, UNRULY HAIR USE: Instant Smoothening Cream ($5.90 for 120ml) USE: Instant Damage Reconstruction Cream ($5.90 for 120ml) BENEFITS: Glossy, well-behaved, ruler-straight hair BENEFITS: Intensive nutrient boost for weak and brittle hair STAR INGREDIENTS: A Keratin Yoghurt Nutri Complex to repair hair fibres and five natural oils (almond, argan, coconut, jojoba and olive) to soften, hydrate, protect and add shine and elasticity. STAR INGREDIENTS: A Keratin Complex to repair damage, an amino acid called lysine to promote healthy hair growth and conditioning agents to lubricate and protect against daily aggressors. 13 GLOW APR-JUN ‘14 GENTLE STRENGTH Two common causes of thinning hair: breakage and an unhealthy scalp with hair follicles clogged by excess sebum, dirt and product residue. To properly care for such tresses, you need products that are able to thoroughly cleanse the scalp whilst being gentle on delicate hair strands. It’s a tough balancing act, but L’Oreal Paris Hair Expertise promises to deliver with its EverStrong Hair & Scalp System, comprising a Thickening Shampoo, Conditioner and leave-in Tonic. Boasting an Amino Acid Complex to strengthen and densify weak and thinning tresses, the range is based on natural botanicals and completely free of harsh salts, parabens and sulfates that could strip scalp and locks of natural oils. $14.50-$21.90. Water Colour When the going gets hot and dusty, the last thing you want is a thick layer of product on your face. Silkygirl’s Magic BB Water Gel ($15.90) offers the perfect fix with an intensely hydrating formula that’s light and refreshing so skin can breathe throughout the day. Packed with sodium hyaluronate, an ingredient known to deliver sustained moisture, this BB cream also helps conceal flaws, brighten skin tone, refine and smoothen complexion. In two shades: 01 Natural and 02 Radiant. Express Cleansing You don’t always have to bring out the big guns when cleansing if all you have on is a light layer of makeup. To make your routine as quick and fuss-free as your get-up, Biore has launched its new Uru Uru 2-in-1 Instant Foaming Wash ($14.90) which does the job of a makeup remover and facial cleanser at the same time. Using an ultra-fine, dense foam which has eight times more micro bubbles than hand-lathered foam, it gently lifts off light makeup while removing dirt and sebum from pores. Infused with 40 per cent Beauty Essence (which has glycerin and extracts from rosehip and royal jelly), it leaves skin soft, clean and moist without tightness. 14 GLOW APR-JUN ‘14 LET THE GOOD TIMES Roll { Continuing with its mode of shaking up the health and beauty industry with exciting retail concepts, Watsons has partnered with its key brands to bring about its latest initiative – Watsons on Wheels. The store’s first-ever mobile truck, its aim is to bring the latest products – and exclusive deals – closer to consumers. Every month from March till the end of the year, the truck will feature a different beauty, health or even baby brand, with the entire vehicle dressed up in the brand’s visuals and colours. Think of it as a pop-up store that moves. From heartlands to city centres and tertiary institutions, it will be making stops all across Singapore. Customers can hop on and be treated to trial samples, special bargains available only on the truck and even on-the-spot makeovers. Kicking off the initiative with Watsons was Maybelline, which emblazoned the truck with images from its ColorShow makeup collection. Showcasing products from the Colorshow line as well as other hot favourites, the pop-up store made its rounds to locations that included Cineleisure, Singapore Management University, Clarke Quay and Float@Marina Bay. Next brand up: Huggies. So keep an eye out for the Watsons on Wheels truck and snag yourself the latest products and great deals. Beauty Exclusives ONLY AT Watsons The special finds you won’t get anywhere else. Shield agent You’ve heard of Q10. Now meet PQQ, another coenzyme which reportedly boosts skin turnover and cell growth, as well provide antioxidant protection. Found in DHC’s PQQ Up Gel ($59), it reportedly protects skin from environmental damage. Those concerned with wrinkles and sagging should give this gel-essence a go. On top of botanical extracts like silk flower bark and licorice to soothe inflammation, it has hyaluronic acid and peptides to firm up loose skin and improve elasticity. Unlike most other beauty essences, this treatment product is to be applied as the last step of your daily regime – after moisturiser but before sunblock. Other uses: as a clear base before makeup, or a rich leave-on sleeping mask. 16 UV PROTECTION AND MOISTURE Don’t let its light gel texture and refreshing feel fool you. DHC’s Suncut Q10 50+ Aqua Gel ($26.90) is a heavyweight when it comes to suncare and hydration. Despite providing extra high protection of SPF50+/PA++++, it leaves no whitish cast and no feelings of stickiness or discomfort. Chock full of moisturising ingredients like virgin olive oil, hyaluronic acid, green tea extract and coenzyme Q10, it’s free of fragrances, colourants and parabens so even sensitive skin can use it. GLOW APR-JUN ‘14 MODEL PHOTOS SHOWBIT.COM ANTIOXIDANT PROTECTION AND REPAIR As with your health insurance coverage, you’d want your skincare protection to be nothing short of comprehensive. These latest releases from DHC will help cover all your bases. Well oiled We all know that ample moisture and a clean, healthy scalp are the foundation of beautiful hair. Japanese brand, Moist Diane, has made these this area of specialty. How? By using oil. Just like with oil makeup removers and skincare, oil is actually the best way to deep-cleanse and deliver nutrients to hair and scalp. That is why the brand developed the Neo Generation Oil – a blend of high-quality rare oils from argan, baobab, marula, cupuacu and andiroba. Found in all Moist Diane shampoos and treatments, it’s greaseless and lightweight so you won’t get icky, greasy strands, just a beautifully smooth and shiny mane. Even those with oily hair can use the products. Available in two ranges: Moist & Shine for long, dry or damaged hair, and Volume & Scalp for soft, fluffy locks. $16.90 for shampoo/conditioner, $18.90 for hair oil. Grape Expectations It’s the best of both worlds. French brand Dr Vincent Auchane is a skincare line that combines the advanced biotechnology of pharmaceutical products with the organic goodness of powerful natural ingredients. Specifically, grapevine blossoms. Known for its strong nourishing, repairing and selfregenerating properties, the flowers inspired the brand’s founder, cosmetic surgeon Dr Auchane, to harness them as the main ingredient in his line. Key products include the holistic anti-ageing Regenerating Serum, the radiance-enhancing Renewing Serum and the skin thirst-quenching Hydra+ serum and moisturisers. With daily use, the brand promises healthier, more hydrated and supple skin with a youthful glow in four weeks. $29-$89. 17 GLOW APR-JUN ‘14 Beauty Q&A Q Is there a way to get rid of dark eye circles and eye bags permanently? Mine seem chronic! According to dermatologist Dr Eileen Tan of Eileen Tan Skin, Laser and Hair Transplant Clinic, there are various causes behind dark circles. It could be hereditary, with other family members having the same problem. Eyelid skin is thin and contains little fatty tissue, which is why any discoloration is often accentuated. Blood vessels also run close to the skin surface, often producing a bluish black tint. Apart from genetic predisposition, habits such as frequent eye-rubbing can lead to hyperpigmentation around the eyes due to increased melanin. Medical conditions such as eczema and psoriasis can also cause hyperpigmentation. Dark circles can usually be concealed with camouflage creams and makeup. “Topical lightening creams with hydroquinone or vitamin C may possibly lighten the pigmentation. If these measures fail, you can consult a dermatologist and discuss the possibility of laser treatment, which are often effective, although multiple sessions are needed. Maintenance treatments are often required to keep up the effects,” says Dr Tan. Other measures include avoiding rubbing your eyes, removing eye makeup thoroughly every day, getting enough sleep and eating a balanced diet with lots of natural antioxidants. Beauty Q&A We get you the answers to your skincare, haircare and makeup concerns. As for eye bags, Dr Tan explains that people often equate them with puffy eyes. “Causes for puffy eyes can range from eye, nasal and food allergies to genetic factors and medical conditions like nephritic syndrome –a kidney ailment that causes excessive water retention, hydrothyroidism or heart disease. See a doctor if your eyes are constantly very puffy,” she says. Eyebags, on the other hand, are due to skin around eyes becoming loose with age. When this happens, it loses its ability to hold fat pads, resulting in a saggy, puffy look. Simple solutions for puffy eyes and eyebags include limiting salt and alcohol intake before bedtime and to avoid drinking water two hours before you sleep. A cold eye mask would decrease the swelling by constricting blood vessels, while a gentle eye massage helps to get rid of excessive water retention. Dr Tan also recommends radiofrequency treatments such as Thermage or Exilis to improve and tighten the skin. However, multiple sessions are required and maintenance treatments are necessary. A more extreme option would be blepharoplasty, a procedure that removes excessive muscle and fat within the eyelid. This has to be performed by a plastic surgeon. Q How do I remove clogged pores without extraction? They come back again and again. Clogged pores are caused by excess sebum being trapped. If dead skin cells and dirt are also present, bacteria could breed and result in pimples, or the dead cells could mix with the oil and harden to form blackheads. To prevent sebum from accumulating, it’s important to first keep pores clean. Look for cleansers containing ingredients like salicylic acid or glycolic acid, as these help clear pores from inside out. They also provide gentle exfoliation to slough away dead skin and boost skin’s renewal rate. You can also consider using tools such as soft facial sponges or cleansing brushes like Olay’s Pro-X Advanced Cleansing System. Be sure to remove makeup and sunscreen thoroughly each day, as they often contain ingredients that could clog pores. Use an oil-based cleanser if you wear heavy makeup, as that ensures a more complete cleanse. Next, remember to keep skin hydrated. Even oily skin needs to be moisturised to maintain proper balance, and a lack of hydration can actually cause skin to over-compensate by producing more oil. Dry skin is also more likely to have a build-up of dead skin cells. Stick to lightweight moisturisers with gel or fluid formulas, and consider using one with an active treatment ingredient like salicylic acid if the clogs are severe. Q Why do I have tiny bubble-like bumps on the skin under my eyes? What are they caused by and how do I cure them? Those bumps are most likely milia seeds – small white or yellow bumps or cysts on the skin which are commonly seen in newborns but can occur to people of all ages. They typically occur when keratin, a protein found in skin, hair and nails, become trapped under the skin surface. According to dermatologist Dr Eileen Tan, they’re usually caused by genetic factors or age. Skin that has suffered some kind of damage such as long-term sun damage, blistering injuries or resurfacing procedures like lasers may also end up with milia. While milia is harmless and will normally clear by themselves in a few months, some people may opt for treatment for aesthetic reasons or if it persists. Dr Tan says that treatment methods include electrocautery – a minor surgical procedure where an electrically heated needle or instrument is used to make a cut – as well as manually pricking and removing the milia seeds using a fine needle. However, she cautions against overzealous squeezing to try and get them out, as that may leave scars. 19 GLOW APR-JUN ‘14 6-STEPS TO BEING A Beach Goddess We love summertime fun: surf, sand and pina coladas but with salt water and searing heat in the mix, you might end up a makeup meltdown instead of sultr y beach babe. Here’s how to look like the latter - think bikini-clad Bond girl Ursula Andress - no matter what the great outdoors has in store. By Natasha Chiam. 21 GLOW APR-JUN ‘14 Beauty Feature 1 PROTECT YOUR SKIN Cliched as it sounds, healthy skin is the foundation of beauty. Makeup sits better and lasts longer on it, and you’ll have a natural glow. Being out in the sun means extra care is needed to protect and nourish your skin. Says makeup artist Clarence Lee, “Make sure you use extra products on top of your usual ones - because you’re being baked under the sun on top of your regular airconditioning at home or in the office.” Makeup artist Larry Yeo agrees, and recommends layering vitamin C underneath sunscreen to maximise sun protection and prevent sunburn. The antioxidant can reportedly help minimise free radical damage caused by UV rays. In addition to your skincare routine, go for a sunscreen with at least SPF50 in a light texture that won’t feel uncomfortable or sticky outdoors. And pack it in your beach bag - sunscreen won’t last all day, especially at the beach. Says Yeo: “PLEA SE REMEMBER TO REAPPLY EVERY HOUR OR SO DUE TO SWEAT AND WATER ACTIVITIES.” Yeo also uses Dr Wu Whitening System Intensive Whitening Toner with Vitamin C ($45.90) under his sunscreen to reduce the risk of sunburn. FOR A PORELESS COMPLEXION Biore UV Aqua Mousse SPF50+/PA+++ ($19) is as light as water, with an invisible finish. Light powder reduces the appearance of pores. FOR THE BODY, Neutrogena Ulta Sheer Wet Skin Sunblock Body Mist SPF50+/PA+++ ($26.50) gives a sexy sheen sans stickiness, while Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch SPF50+/ PA+++ ($22.30) is perfect for those who want a matte finish. FOR ANTI-AGING Sunplay Clear Water SPF50+/PA+++ ($16.70) hydrates and reportedly tackles wrinkles. TO BOOST HYDRATION Hada Labo Moisturizing UV Milk SPF50+/PA+++ ($20.40) has three kinds of hyaluronic acid to moisturise face and body. TO PROTECT SENSITIVE SKIN La Roche Posay Uvidea XL Fluid Extreme SPF50 ($52.90) is fragrance free, and leaves a matte finish 2 GO NATURAL, NOT FLAWLESS Avoid heavy, full-coverage base makeup - it’s the beauty equivalent of wearing an evening gown to the beach instead of a bikini. Instead of aiming for flawless skin, go for natural. Choose lightweight bases, like light BB creams or tinted sunscreens. While they won’t cover every single freckle or spot, but they will unify your overall skintone for a natural looking, even complexion. FOR DRY SKIN L’Oreal True Match BB SPF35/PA+++ ($19.90) and Maybelline BB Watergel SPF35/PA+++ ($19.90) both claim 24 hour hydration. FOR OILIER SKIN Dr Wu UV Protective Cream with Tinosorb M (Tinted) SPF50 ($39.90) offers shine control. FOR QUICK TOUCH UPS L’egere BB Cream ($38.90) is a liquid in a sponge compact with a mirror and sponge so it’s handbag friendly and easy to reapply. 3 WORK A HEALTHY GLOW Every beach babe rocks a sun-kissed, healthy flush. Don’t reach for the traditional powder blushers though - they tend to streak and smear in the presence of heat and water. Makeup artist Clarence Lee recomends cheek stains instead, “to achieve a natural, healthy, rosy complexion without a heavy feel.” Skip this step if you get flushed easily in the heat - this is one occasion where your natural blush works to your advantage. FOR AN ALL-OVER GLOW Maybelline Baby Skin Instant Pink Transformer SPF35/PA++ ($19.90) boasts light reflecting pink pearl pigments for rosy pink complexion FOR SUN-KISSED CHEEKS Revlon Cream Blush ($22.90) 23 GLOW APR-JUN ‘14 4 ACCENT YOUR EYES Full eye makeup is not only impractical, it looks out of place at the beach. Keep eyes fuss-free: no eyeshadow, just well groomed brows and defined lashes. As the rest of your face will be quite bare and natural, nicely groomed brows help to add a bit of polish and femininity. In keeping with the natural look, go for a shade that’s the same or one tone lighter than your hair colour (too-dark brows look harsh and fake). Long, dark lashes instantly make eyes look bigger and brighter - and give that Bond-girl sensuality. Be sure to pick waterproof mascaras to avoid panda eyes. FOR LONG-LA STING BROWS Clio Tinted Brow Kill ($23.90) is like a marker, and is best used the day before as it leaves a tint on skin. K-Palette 24H Real Lasting 2-Way Eyebrow Liner ($19.90) has a liquid liner end to fill in sparse brows, and powder for a natural finish. Brow Lash 24H Water Strong W Eyebrow ($20.40) can be applied over any brow product to make it oil, sweat and waterproof. WATERPROOF MA SCARA S Dolly Wink Volume Mascara ($29.90) lengthens and curls, and reportedly has hair conditioning ingredients to protect lashes. Maybelline Volum Express The Rocket Waterproof ($18.90) gives volume and curl that lasts all day. 5 PUT ON A SEXY POUT Lipsticks and glosses tend to slide off in the sun. Instead, go for tints. Says makeup artist Larry Yeo, “They give amazingly long lasting hues.” The colours lightly stain the lips, so you won’t need to reapply all day. Finish with a lip balm with SPF to protect against dryness and chapping from the saltwater and sun. FOR COLOUR FOR PROTECTION Collection Color Pout Lipstain ($12.90) come in easy-to-use marker form. Ego Qv Lipbalm SPF30 ($6.60) Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain ($16.90) is a smooth crayon that softly colours and moisturises lips. Maybelline Baby Lips Pink Glow ($6.00) reportedly adjusts to your skin’s pH for a personalised shade of sheer pink. Q10 Lipgel ($6.90) Neutrogena Lip Moisturiser SPF15 ($7.30) 6 GET SHINY, FRIZZ-FREE HAIR Think California beach babe hair: relaxed, natural textures with a healthy shine. Enemies of this effortlessly glam look? Humidity and the sun. The former causes frizz and flyaways, the latter can damage the hair cuticle, causing brittle, dry and rough ends. To keep your ‘do looking its best at the beach, treat it as you would your skin, with hydration and sun protection. Keep styling simple. Beach hair is best worn down, or in a low pony that won’t be messed up by wind or water. If you have fine hair prone to frizz, manage it with calming, conditioning products. For beachy waves, don’t reach for the usual salt sprays (you’ll have enough of that at the beach itself ). Instead choose products that add a bit of texture while keeping hair shiny and hydrated. FOR SUN PROTECTION ANTI-FRIZZ FOR BEACH BABE WAVES L’Oreal Paris Extraordinary Oil ($23.90) has UV filters, and smoothes and hydrates dry tresses, while Sunsilk Damage Reconstruction Instant Damage Reconstruction Cream ($5.90) repairs and shields from further sun damage. Marc Anthony Repairing Macadamia Oil Treatment ($18.90) creates shiny, more manageable beach waves that don’t look unruly Sunsilk Smooth & Manageable Instant Smoothening Cream ($5.90) can be used on wet or dry hair to tame frizz. Marc Anthony Dream Waves Beach Spray ($19.90) adds texture to fine hair and has UV filters to prevent damage, dehyrdation and colour fade. 25 GLOW APR-JUN ‘14 Find the perfect swimsuit for your body type The right swimsuit can help to boost your cleavage, tuck in your tummy or downplay your bottom. We tell you how to highlight your natural assets by picking the most flattering fit for your shape. By Jaclyn Lim Beauty Feature If you are… Busty/ Top-Heavy With a voluptuous figure, coverage is key so forget skimpy string bikinis. Instead, look for a swimsuit with a top that’s sized like a bra – with an underwire or moulded cups and structured sides – to keep the breasts in place and ensure better support. Consider a halter-top bikini or V-neck one-piece swimsuit as this style provides adequate coverage while showing off some cleavage. At the same time, it elongates your figure, drawing attention away from your bust. “Also, the adjustable halter neck tie, and clasps or ties at the back provide for added securement,” adds Dianna Tai, Communications and Marketing Manager for Billabong. Seafolly Mod Club Bustier Bra bikini, $139 Seafolly Goddess Fixed Moulded Halter bikini, $129 If you are… Seafolly Summer Garden F Cup Balconette $179 Curvy Those with curvy figures can opt for almost any styles, depending on the look that they are trying to achieve. Audrey Cheng, Assistant Brand Manager of Sloggi, explains: “For instance, you can opt for padded cups to further enhance your assets.” Or, you can choose a bandeau to minimise the bust. To create an illusion of a thinner torso, a one-piece swimsuit with vertical lines or smaller prints will do too. String bikinis also often feature bottoms with lesser fabric at the hips, which makes your legs appear longer for a slimmer silhouette. Seafolly Mod Club Slide Tri bikini, $115 Seafolly Goddess Kiara Bustier bikini, $139 27 GLOW APR-JUN ‘14 Billabong Mozambique Bandeau, $44.90 each for top and bottoms “One of the most common mistakes women make is squeezing themselves into a swimsuit of a smaller size, thinking that a tighter fit will accentuate their curves. But nothing looks better than a well-fitted swimsuit!” Ms Gina Anstee, Business Development Manager, Seafolly If you are… Pear-Shaped / bottom-heavy Those who are pear-shaped often struggle to find a swimsuit that can flatter their lower body and overall figure. If it fits on top, it doesn’t quite look right below. So, stick to a two-piece swimsuit that will enable you to mask the bottom while showing off the top. “To hide your hips, choose a swimsuit with boyish shorts or fringes,” suggests Ms Cheng. “Colour blocking is also an option. You can choose a darker colour for your bottom to downplay its size.” Gina Anstee, Business Development Manager at Seafolly, adds: “Then, bring the focus to the bust area by wearing a top with colourful printed patterns or fills.” Seafolly Honolulu Bustier Bra bikini, $149 Care for your swimsuit! Billabong Seychelles Triangle bikini, $44.90 each for top and bottoms All that chlorine, saltwater, sunscreen and sweat can end up spoiling your swimsuit. After each wear, be sure to turn it inside out and hand-wash with mild detergent in cold water. Then, lay it flat to dry. Beauty Feature If you are… Boyish / Slim And Straight Look to create an illusion of a curvier silhouette if you have boyish figure. “While halter tops are better for those with bigger busts, women with smaller chests can opt for tankinis or triangle-tops,” says Ms Tai. You can even go for padded tops with trimmings like rings, ruffles and ribbon bows to make your chest appear larger. “Bust inserts are also available if you need an extra boost,” suggests Ms Anstee. “And if you prefer a onepiece swimsuit, look for a design with a dark-coloured band at the sides or side cut-outs – this cinches your waist, making your figure curvier than it really is,” adds Ms Cheng. Beauty Feature Go from FLAB TO FAB in 30 days! You may think this an impossible task but really it’s not. Here’s a simple program to get you looking like Jessica Alba in one month flat! By Justin Koh 36 GLOW APR-JUN ‘14 Beauty Feature Week 1 2: Cardio training Alternate between running, skipping and swimming Running Run at a pace that is roughly 75 per cent of your maximum for 50 metres, then rest for 30 seconds. Repeat this 5 times. At the sixth set, run at your maximum for 100 metres. While intense, these bursts of activity tone muscles and improve your ability to burn fat. Skipping Alternate your runs with skipping and swimming; running alone cannot target all the smaller muscles that give you ultra-toned and lean legs. All it takes is five minutes a day. Here’s how to skip right: use your wrists to flick the rope in a circular motion. This allows you to time your jumps better and keeps you skipping longer. Skipping also improves coordination and balance. Just ten minutes is like running for 45 minutes, so keep it up! Swimming A quick dip in the pool is always great post-workout – it cools the muscles and helps in the recovery process. Swimming also works out the abdominal and arm muscles to give you svelte, toned arms! Running, skipping and swimming are not created equal, so adjust the routine according to what you enjoy most. Beauty Feature Week 3 4: Toning Miranda Kerr’s shapely body isn’t just down to good genes – she spends time in the gym too. Here’s how to get as toned as she is. Shrug those shoulders Sexy shoulders are not a myth; you can get them by doing two simple exercises. Start with the front raise. Holding your weight, raise your arms in front of you until it is parallel with the floor. Do not swing the weight as it increases your risk of injury. Perform this 12 times to complete one set. Do five sets. Next comes the lateral raise. The only difference here is that you should be lifting to the side instead of the front. Get a tummy tuck As we grow older, the abdominal muscles loosen, resulting in what we commonly call “love handles”. Tighten those muscles with 50 crunches every day. Another variation is the plank, which improves the strength of your abdominals to create that flat tummy. Lying face down, support your body using your arms. Form a straight line with your body, and keep your knees off the floor. Hold for one minute. Do this on a soft mat to prevent your arms and elbows from bruising. 38 GLOW APR-JUN ‘14 Make J.Lo envious of your butt Toe taps are great for sculpting and tightening your buttock muscles. Lying down, lift your feet off the floor so your thighs are perpendicular to the ground and your calves parallel to it. Slowly, tap your right foot on the floor, then the left. Continue for one minute. Again, do this on a soft mat to avoid hurting your tailbone. Get Snacking! All this exercise is going to make you hungry. Curb the urge to binge by snacking throughout the day. Researchers at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) found that individuals who snacked regularly were actually 95 per cent less likely to put on excess weight or become obese. They were also more energetic and less likely to feel tired as their energy intake was supplemented throughout the day. Grab nutrient-rich, calorie-poor snacks like blueberries and bananas. These foods are packed with nutrients and great for any time of the day. For those looking for crunchy munchies, here’s a sneaky tip: eat popcorn. Avoid the typical versions that are laden with sugar and salt and get the air-popped ones instead. These are not only low in calories, but also contain very little fat. Rich in vitamins, minerals and protein, it’s crunchy and delicious. You can also make it tastier by sprinkling on a little seasoning like grated parmesan cheese or cinnamon. HOT TIPS De-stress! GET YOUR LINGERIE RIGHT Ladies: Your bra is really your secret best friend, lending support where needed and making you look good. That’s why it’s so important to get the right fit and keep your lingerie in good condition. We show you how to make sure it’s flattering, comfortable and goes the distance. By Jaclyn Lim MODEL PHOTO COURTESY OF TRIUMPH – AND MAKE IT LAST! WHEN TRYING ON BRAS, IT SHOULD FIT SNUGLY – WITH NO MORE THAN TWO FINGERS UNDERNEATH THE BAND OF YOUR BRA – AND BE STRAIGHT EVEN WHEN IT IS ON THE LOOSEST HOOK. FIRST, GET THE RIGHT FIT… For many women, finding a bra that fits well is a never-ending challenge. In fact, brashopping can be a confusing and nerve-wrecking experience. “Many women still do not know how to shop for the right bras or how to put them on the correct way. This is so even though they have worn bras for many years,” observes Ms Mikeller Ho, Advertising and Marketing and PR Assistant Manager from Triumph. “In fact, our statistics show that 80 per cent of women here adjust their bras during the day. This shows that they have bra-fit problems that should be solved.” MODEL PHOTO ISTOCKPHOTO Here, we list some common lingerie-shopping mistakes you are likely to be making Not getting measured “Many women don’t bother trying on bras, not knowing that their bra size may have changed over the years or even months due to hormonal changes,” says Ms Ho. So, whenever you are shopping for lingerie at boutiques or departmental stores, always get measured first. Opting for comfort over support Although a looser fit feels more comfortable, a bra should always be snug. So when trying on bras, it should fit firmly – with no more than two fingers allowance underneath the band of your bra – and be straight even when it is on the loosest hook. Settling for the wrong size Cup sizes like A, B and C are directly correlated to a band size, which is your ribcage measurement. So choosing a bra based on your cup size is inaccurate. With the right cup size and band size, you will find that your bra fits a lot better. Always choosing the same style Yes, that favourite t-shirt bra is a failsafe option and immensely comfortable. However, there are many other styles that you should explore as your body – not to mention your wardrobe – changes. Ms Ho adds: “Try on different styles, so that you can see what really works for your body.” Wearing a loose top to shop Loose clothing won’t show how well your bra is fitted underneath, so wear a well-fitted shirt or blouse made of clingy material during bra-shopping. This way, you can see how the different bra shapes affect the overall look. NOW…KEEP YOUR BRAS IN GOOD SHAPE As lingerie is worn close to the skin for long periods of time, they should be washed often. In a hot and humid climate like Singapore, it should be washed daily. In general, a bra gets worn out after one to two years. But with proper care and handling, it can last longer. Try out these washing tips: Hand-wash is the way to go Wash your bras by hand as much as possible, especially if they are made with delicate fabrics like silk. For the best results, soak them in mild detergent for a few minutes before rubbing the straps and underwire thoroughly to prevent perspiration stains. Then, rinse and roll in a towel to absorb excess moisture before hanging them to dry. Use a lingerie bag If you must machine-wash them, use a zippered mesh bag so the washing does not stretch or wrinkle them. “This prevents the bras from losing their twisting or snagging and losing their shape,” says Ms Ho. “Also, keep them clasped to prevent them from hooking onto the bag.” Bleach is a no no Bleach is too harsh and damaging, so never use them on your lingerie. Instead, pre-soak with mild detergent first. Use the gentle cycle Always read and follow the instructions on the washing labels. Ideally, set the machine cycle to gentle mode and wash in cold water, as lingerie does not fare well with a lot of tossing movement. Ditch the dryer All the tossing and turning in the dryer may not only damage the bras, but also cause them to shrink. Ms Ho says: “Always hang them up to dry in windy and shady areas instead of using the dryer. Avoid leaving them in humid spots, which may cause them to smell like mildew.” Be sure to re-shape the bras, especially if they have padding within, before hanging them up. Ms Ho suggests: “Choose bras that have higher side and back panels, like the Triumph Butterflystyle. This smoothens the bulges.” Problem #2: “My bra and underwear outlines can be seen.” Solve it! This usually occurs when you wear fitted or bodyhugging clothing. To ensure a seamless silhouette minus the VPL and muffin top, consider wearing body-shaping underwear such as body stockings. Problem #3: “After a long day, I feel warm and stifled from wearing my lingerie.” Solve it! In Singapore’s warm and humid weather, it is best to choose lightweight bras, which will feel more comfortable and seamless. “For instance, Triumph Cool Sensation is able to reduce the body temperature by 1.27 degree Celsius to keep the wearer cool and refreshed the entire day,” says Ms Ho. Wellness Buzz Forget juicing, start slicing Juices are a great way to quench thirst, but did you know that drinking too much fruit juice can result in an increased risk of diabetes? Researchers in the US, including a team from Harvard School of Public Health, collected data from 187,382 people over three separate studies. What they found was that replacing three servings of fruit juice with blueberries lowered the risk of type 2 diabetes by as much as 33 per cent, while replacing them with grapes and raisins reduced risk by 19 per cent. Other fruits with similar, though less pronounced effect, include apples, pears, bananas and grapefruit. Researchers said that while the nutritional content may be similar, fluids are absorbed more rapidly, resulting in larger and more drastic changes to insulin, than whole fruit. Curb cravings with Tetris The visual stimulation provided by the game reportedly reduces the strength of cravings for food, cigarettes and alcohol by preventing the brain from creating enticing mental images of these items. Going to the doctor’s? Beware that stethoscope Stethoscopes have significant potential to spread germs from patient to patient, a new study shows. Researchers found that the diaphragm of a stethoscope — the round piece placed against a patient’s body — can become dirty with antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The tube of the stethoscope also can become laden with bacteria and the contamination level of both the diaphragm and the tube increases with the amount of bacteria on the doctor’s fingertips. “Germs are acquired from the patient’s skin in contact with the stethoscope, the same way hands usually get colonised with the patient’s germs,” says Dr Didier Pittet, the study’s senior author, director of the Infection Control Program at the University of Geneva Hospitals. “The important implication is that the stethoscope…needs to be cleaned after each use.” So the next time you go to a doctor, get him to wipe down the stethoscope. Star Trek health tech becomes a reality American company Azoi has developed an iPhone case that can help you keep track of your health by monitoring blood pressure, heart rate, blood oxygen levels, temperature and lung function. Called the Wello, the case is similar to the tricorder used by medical staff in Star Trek to remotely scan patients. It fits over an iPhone 4S, 5 and 5S like a normal case, but has built-in circuitry to take readings in seconds by holding it and resting your fingers on the sensors. A Wello app then records the data to help discern long-term trends and health issues. Costing around $323, the case is available for pre-order at azoi.com. ASK THE PHARMACIST Got some niggling health questions? We get you answers from the friendly pharmacists at Watsons. Q What sort of soaps or shower gels are suitable for people with eczema? Are there ingredients to look out for or avoid? To care for eczema skin, we must follow four steps: avoid, hydrate, repair and lock-in. Firstly, avoid common bar soaps and soapy cleansers as they tend to be harsh on skin. These products have a pH way above 5.5 (even up to 10) and contain many ingredients such as sodium lauryl sulphate and sodium laurate that strip away skin’s natural protective factors and delay repair. Gritty materials like crushed seeds which are sometimes included to “scrub” skin can also dry it out. menthol, certain preservatives (in very sensitive cases, parabens) and plant-based ingredients, although skin tolerance varies among individuals. If your skin tingles or feels tight and squeaky after a shower, those are signs that your bath product is too harsh. While a squeaky sensation imparts a false sense of cleanliness, in reality it means the cleanser has stripped away the natural moisturising factors from your skin. Experiencing an itching or burning sensation right after showering is a bad sign too. Other ingredients which can be directly irritating to skin include perfumes and colouring, alcohol-based chemicals and The good news is much progress has been made in formulating products that are skin-friendly. These products hydrate and repair skin, and some boast a pH of 5.5. Examples include syndets, which are special soaps formulated to be gentle on the skin; soap-free cleansers and emollient baths which contain moisturising ingredients; and paraben-free cleansers. There are additional rules of thumb to follow when shopping for a cleanser. Start by looking out for labels such as “for all skin types”, “for sensitive skin” or “hypo-allergenic”. Also, check for a cocktail of moisturising and skin repair factors in your product. Some of these ingredients have antibacterial action as well. These include ceramides, caprylic or capric triglyceride, fatty alcohols like stearyl alcohol, glycerol or glycerine, plant oils like sunflower seed oil and shea butter, polyethylene glycol (PEG) and nicotinamide or niacinamide. The last one has the added function of reducing paraben-related irritation. Lastly, always use a moisturiser after bathing. While thorough cleansing is important, it is more crucial to retain moisture so do moisturise within five to 15 minutes after your shower. 50 GLOW APR-JUN ‘14 Wellness Feature Q I want to strengthen my ageing knees. Is glucosamine a good option and is it true you need to start taking them from your 30s or 40s for there to be a cumulative effect? Over the years, glucosamine supplements have been shown to benefit people with osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is a condition where joints become painful and inflamed due to the wear and tear of joint cartilage from overuse or ageing. Several glucosamine salts are available in the market, such as glucosamine hydrochloride and glucosamine sulphate. It’s best to go for glucosamine sulphate, as studies have shown that it has the most benefit in terms of pain alleviation and improvement in function. Glucosamine hydrochloride and other salt formulations are not as effective. However, do note that the effect of glucosamine sulphate varies among people with osteoarthritis. It can be taken at 1000-1500mg daily for a trial period of three months, and continued indefinitely if beneficial. Glucosamine is generally safe and a viable choice for managing osteoarthritis. On the other hand, the benefits of taking glucosamine to prevent osteoarthritis are not clear at the moment. Thus, it is not necessary to take glucosamine in your 30s or 40s as a preventive measure, although there appear to be few risks associated with its use. AND RASH. Are the conditions manifested on your skin harmless or signs of more serious problems (read: skin disease)? Here’s how to tell if it you ought to be worried and what to do about it. By Denyse Yeo Itching, burning, peeling – there is a host of annoying afflictions your skin can possibly suffer from. And you would be far from alone. One in three people around the world is affected by a skin disorder, according to the Agency for Science, Technology and Research. In Singapore, some of the most common skin afflictions include atopic eczema, acne, viral warts and fungal infections, says dermatologist Suzanne Cheng from the National Skin Centre. We take a closer look at these conditions and find out more about their causes and treatments. ATOPIC ECZEMA Symptoms of eczema include skin that is itchy, red, inflamed and irritated. There are different types of eczema, but the most common is atopic eczema or atopic dermatitis. Other types of eczema include seborrhoeic dermatitis and allergic contact dermatitis. Says Dr Cheng: “Atopic eczema commonly presents in infancy and childhood, but can also occur for the first time in adults. It affects both sexes equally. “In infancy, common areas affected include the face and outer aspects of the limbs. During childhood, it usually affects the skin folds, such as the elbow creases, back of knees and neck.” 52 CAUSES Doctors still don’t know what causes eczema. “However, we know that genes play an important role as eczema often runs in families with a history of atopy,” says Dr Cheng. Atopy refers to the tendency to develop hypersensitivity disorders, such as eczema, allergic rhinitis (think of hay fever or sinus problems) or asthma. Other potential causes include changes in the immune sytem and stress. TREATMENT Although eczema cannot be cured, you can manage it with good skin care. People with more serious eczema may require topical (with or without steroids) or oral medication, or phototherapy, depending on the severity. TIPS FOR DAILY CARE • Avoid scratching, rubbing and picking at the skin. This worsens the eczema and may cause pigmentation, open wounds and scars. • Use gentle soaps or soap substitutes. • Moisturise often, especially after showering. ACNE TREATMENT This condition develops in and around hair follicles and their oil-producing glands. Symptoms usually occur on the face, neck and back and include blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, blemishes, nodules, cysts and scarring. Acne usually starts during the teenage years, but adults in their 20s and 30s may also suffer from it, says Dr Cheng. CAUSES Excessive sebum is the first step in acne formation. “No one knows why some people’s oil glands produce more sebum than others,” says Dr Cheng. But when this happens, the oil glands become blocked, which leads to the formation of blackheads and whiteheads. If these get infected with bacteria, the hair follicle becomes red and inflamed, resulting in a pimple. To prevent scars from developing, it is important to seek treatment early, says Dr Cheng. Mild acne usually requires topical treatment, such as those containing sulphur and resorcinol or benzoyl peroxide. These can usually be obtained at pharmacies. Other topical treatments include antibiotics or those derived from vitamin A. For moderate to severe acne, oral medication is preferred, including antibiotics and the birth control pill Diane-35 for women. Severe acne cases are treated with isotretinoin, which inhibits sebum production. However, female patients must avoid getting pregnant and it also requires the monitoring of lipids and liver function tests, adds Dr Cheng. In severe cases, pus may develop within the pimple, she adds. “Large, painful swellings called nodules and cysts may also develop, resulting in scarring after the acne has resolved.” 53 GLOW APR-JUN ‘14 Wellness Feature VIRAL WARTS These are harmless skin growths that have a rough surface with tiny, dark dots on them. They can develop anywhere on the body, from the face to the feet. Adds Dr Cheng: “On pressure areas like the palms or soles, they appear flat. Warts on the soles tend to grow inward from the pressure of standing and walking, and are often painful.” CAUSES Caused by a wart virus, warts are contagious and may spread from one part of the body to another. They can also spread to other people from direct contact. “We do not know why some people get warts while others don’t, and there is no way to prevent warts,” explains Dr Cheng, although she adds that genital warts are usually sexually acquired. TREATMENT There is “no perfect treatment for warts”, says Dr Cheng. Options include freezing with liquid nitrogen, electrocautery or destroying with a weak electrical current, and using a carbon dioxide laser or topical chemical such as salicylic acid. She adds: “Warts may disappear on their own, especially in young children. This is less common in older children and adults. “Sometimes, new warts form while existing ones are being destroyed. No matter which treatment is used, warts occasionally fail to disappear and may return after apparent cure.” 54 GLOW APR-JUN ‘14 FUNGAL INFECTIONS Common fungal infections include white spots or tinea versicolor, which is an itchy, scaly rash that appears as white, pink or brown patches on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders and limbs, says Dr Cheng. The rash often heals, but leaves behind pale patches that improve over time. The condition generally affects adults. Another is ringworm, which appears as scaly, red circular patches that have a tendency to form rings. It is also known as jock itch when it affects the groin, and symptoms may include pus-filled sores, itchiness and redness. On the feet, ringworm is known as athelete’s foot and symptoms include an itchy red rash between the toes, cracked or blistered skin and a burning sensation. CAUSES White spots are caused by a yeast called malassaesia furfur, and are usually made worse by excessive sweating as well as hot and humid conditions, which are ideal for fungal growth. Ringworm is not caused by a worm, but a fungus called a dermatophyte. TREATMENT A topical antifungal cream should be used two to three times a day for four weeks, advises Dr Cheng. For fungal infections affecting large areas, the nails or scalp, oral antifungal medication should be used, which can only be prescribed by a doctor. PREVENTION TIPS: • Wear open-toe sandals and cotton socks to absorb sweat if you’re wearing covered shoes. • Avoid wearing damp shoes, and don’t use the same pair two or more days in a row. • Wear slippers in areas with wet floors, such as common showers, gyms, public toilets and swimming pools. Do not walk around barefoot. • Avoid sharing personal napkins, towels, combs and hair brushes because fungal infections are easily transferrable. THE ECZEMA & G A O E N H Y T Most cases of eczema can be controlled and managed. But for a small percentage of patients who have had eczema for many years without much improvement or poor control, the condition might be entirely different. In addition, some eczema patients may find that their condition is worsened by sun exposure. When this happens, it can also be confused with another photo-aggravated skin condition called discoid lupus erythematosus, she says. Instead, they could be suffering from mycosis fungoides, a type of lymphoma affecting only the skin. “It can be difficult to distinguish between the two clinically,” says Dr Cheng. Patients often have a red rash on their cheeks, nose, ears and scalp, as well as the upper back, neck and backs of hands. Again, a skin biopsy is necessary to distinguish between the two. Here, the skin is infiltrated by patches or lumps composed of white cells called lymphocytes. The condition may persist in one stage or develop over the years (even decades) to another stage, from patches to thicker plaques and eventually to tumours. A skin biopsy is required to confirm it. DO YOU KNOW YOUR See your doctor if you find these warning signs – also known as “ABCDE” – in any mole or skin growth: Asymmetry in the colour or surface. Says Dr Cheng: “Draw an imaginary line through the centre – both halves should be a mirror image.” ABCDE? Borders are irregular and uneven. Colour. If the same mole or skin growth has different colours, such as black, brown, blue or red, or is crusting or bleeding. While you can treat or control the symptoms of many skin conditions, the one you need to be wary of is malignant melanoma, or skin cancer. Diameter is larger than 6mm. However, “it does not mean that a growth smaller than 6mm is definitely not cancerous”, she says. Dr Cheng explains: “Melanomas can arise in pre-existing moles or as a new growth (de novo). They can occur anywhere on the skin, including the nailbeds, hands and feet, particularly in Asian patients.” Evolving. Any change in size or appearance, or new symptoms such as bleeding, itching and pain. 56 GLOW APR-JUN ‘14 DEBO RA H TA N / A AL RI TE CH M W O BY A THE B K E R ! WOR LD There are other things you can do on the beach, besides lazing around, soaking up the sun, and checking out the eye candy. Here, your guide to building a fitter, stronger body in the sea or on the sand. What’s not to love about working out on the beach? According to the Peninsula College of Medical and Dentistry in Plymouth, UK, people who work out outdoors in the natural environment enjoy greater feelings of revitalisation, increased energy and feel more positive. And, other than the fresh air and the awesome scenery, working out on the sand can make you stronger – doing cardio workouts in deep sand forces your muscles to work harder. Exercising on the sand barefoot also increases the strength in your feet. From the Zen to the heart-stopping, you are spoilt for choice when it comes to selecting the beach sport to do. So get your sunscreen and most supportive swimwear ready (you don’t want any wardrobe malfunction, trust us!), and dive into our picks below. ING RD A KITE B STAND UP PADDLEBOARDING (SUP) It looks challenging but don’t let it intimidate you. Unlike wakeboarding where you have to rent a speedboat, SUP requires minimal equipment – just a paddle and a board. Your legs and core get a workout keeping you balanced on the board, while you develop upper body strength paddling using your arms and chest. You can even do yoga and Pilates on an SUP board! Check it out at www.supschool.com.sg 58 O Also known as kite surfing, this is an exhilarating sport that combines wakeboarding, windsurfing, para-gliding and gymnastics! You catch the wind in your power kite and let it propel you across the surface of the water. This is a sport that puts your reflexes and coordination to the test. Kite boarding is a total-body workout that builds and tones the upper body, arms, abdominals and legs. Check it out at www.singaporekiteboarding.com BEACH BOOTCAMP Want to build a beach-worthy body? Then sign up for a beach bootcamp! A bootcamp guarantees you get both a cardio fix and a strength-training session with an instructor who will push you to your limits. Working out on the sand challenges your body in a whole new way, sculpting your body and increasing your sense of confidence. Check it out at elitecoach.com.sg A F L OWBO R D IN G Technically, this is not done on the beach but at a beach club located by one. Flowboarding is the closest Singaporeans can get to surfing here and you can do it at Wave House Sentosa. The motion involved and the muscles employed are similar to surfing. With flowboarding, you work on your balance and flexibility, and build up your core muscles and cardiovascular fitness. Check out www.wavehousesentosa.com for more details. 59 GLOW APR-JUN ‘14 BEACH VOLLEYBALL If calorie-burning is what you want, this is the sport to do. Male players can burn up to 550 calories per game, while female players, 495 calories. The competitive sport requires players to sprint, jump and hit the ball at a relatively fast pace, making it a cardio workout and a great toner for the muscles in your pecs, shoulders, arms, upper back, lower back, glutes, thighs and calves. A SO H C C CE BE Courts are available for free at Siloso Beach, Sentosa, on a first-come-first-served basis. R Did you know that when Lionel Messi injured his ankle in 2010, he took to the beach as part of his recovery and rehabilitative programme? The beauty of playing The Beautiful Game on the beach is that the sand provides an ideal surface to strengthen the ankle and aid in the recovery from joint injuries. The compact size of the average beach soccer space also allows for more improvisation, a faster pace and greater number of goals scored. Gather a few friends, get a beach soccer ball and find some space on the beach! 60 GLOW APR-JUN ‘14 E G A B CH YO A As you can probably already tell, the one major thing that the beach has going for it as a workout venue is its uneven terrain. With beach yoga, performing your asanas on the sand will help strengthen secondary muscles in your feet, hips and knees. The abundance of fresh air and sunlight is a mood-booster too! Beach yoga events are organised periodically in Singapore. Check out websites like www.intheloop.com.sg and stretchcity.com for updates. Yoga instructor Yun Ng can also organise private classes on the beach. Check out www.yogawithyun.com. SEA SWIMMING If signing up for classes, spending money renting equipment or rounding up people isn’t what you want to do, then try the simplest of all beach sports – sea swimming. A number of studies have shown that sea swimming may have benefits such as boosting the immune system, easing skin irritations, relieving pains and aches and even improving your sex life. Swimming in the sea also teaches you to swim more efficiently as you master the waves. You should graduate to this only if you are a proficient swimmer in the pool, as sea swimming puts you in an uncontrolled environment where you will encounter waves, changing temperatures and marine life. It is worthwhile investing in a sturdy wetsuit or swimming costume, and a bright-coloured swimming cap so you can be spotted easily by lifeguards. Remember this: Build your distance gradually and if the area you’re swimming in has been marked off for safety, don’t swim beyond the safety line. It’s free to swim in the sea at Sentosa and East Coast Park. Go on and start splashing around! FURRY LISTENING EARS Ever got the sense your dog understands how you feel? Researchers at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences put this theory to the test by placing our canine buddies under an MRI scanner, a device designed to capture brain activity. The result? Their brains react to voices and emotional sounds like crying or laughter the same way a human brain does. “We think dogs and humans have a very similar mechanism to process emotional information,” says Dr Atilla Andics, lead author of the study. “We do know there are voice areas in humans, areas that respond more strongly to human sounds that any other types of sounds. The location (of the activity) in the dog brain is very similar to where we found it in the human brain. The fact that we found these areas exist at all in the dog brain is a surprise – it is the first time we have seen this in a non-primate,” he explains. Seems their reputation as man’s best friend is well and truly deserved. Company for Life Turns out a strong social network not only wards off boredom, it prolongs your life. A six-year survey of more than 2,000 individuals aged 50 and above found those who were lonely had a 14 per cent greater risk of dying than average, double the risk of an obese individual. Psychologist John Caciopopo at the University of Chicago says that the pain of loneliness is like physical pain, and previous studies have linked loneliness to a range of problems from a weaker immune system to heart attacks and strokes. While some seemed to fare well alone, others felt lonely even with family and friends close by, suggesting that physical company is not enough – there is also a need to feel valued and loved. Time to plan for more quality time with mum. Life Know-how GREAT EXPECTATIONS Marriages are falling apart because couples are unable to meet the increasing psychological expectations of their partners, says Eli Finkel, director of social psychology at Northwestern University in Illnois. He claims that while the overall demands of marriage have not changed over time, its nature has shifted, with more couples looking beyond bread-and-butter concerns and expecting their marriages to help them “grow as individuals”. A blissful minority are in marriages that fulfil these deeper demands, and those marriages are better than the best ones of yesteryear, he says. But the average marriage falls short because the time and effort required are impossible for most to meet. However, Lynne Jamieson, professor of sociology at Edinburgh University, notes that having a deeper understanding of each other might not be the whole story either. "Making somebody a cup of tea as a gesture, especially first thing in morning, is very important to people. Those little gestures can be as important as profound conversation," she says. NOT TONIGHT, DARLING… I’M MINDING THE BABY Apparently it’s not just new mums who lose their sex drive, the same goes for new dads. A Notre Dame University study found that during baby’s first year, the father’s testosterone level drops by a third as his priority shifts towards protecting the newborn above all else. And for hands-on dads, the level falls by further 20 per cent. The researchers believe that this makes a man more caring and less aggressive, which in turn helps to smooth over relationship bumps and lower the chances of divorce. PURPLE REIGN The Pantone Color Institute has declared “Radiant Orchid” as the hit colour of 2014. A pretty pastelish purple with pink undertones, it reportedly has the effect of enlivening skin and creating a healthy glow when worn as makeup or clothing. It’s also a highly versatile hue that flatters most skin tones and hair colours. If you’re thinking of using it to perk up your living space, try pairing it with olive, deep hunter green, turquoise, teal or even light yellow. GROW UP HEALTHY WITH GROWN-UP FOOD Parents, give your kids a healthier diet by letting them eat what you eat. In a study of 2,000 five-year-olds, Dr Valeria Skafida at the Centre for Population Health Sciences at Edinburgh University found that children who ate the same foods as their parents had healthier, more balanced diets and better overall nutrition. This had greater impact than factors such as socioeconomic background and snacking between meals. 63 GLOW APR-JUN ‘14 E M I T E M I R P Y T U A BE HA N, WIT O I NY S I V NT MA ELE T O L R F A C R N HE E OF OF LO ’S SEE HE FAC RLING T T A A S D H A T E TH ITION STINT ARES SHE’S ISPOS RENT EH SH D R P U D E C N N EA NG A JOAN Y SMIL CLUDI HERE, N . I’m loving Karlie Kloss’ hair style right now. WITH SUCH A HECTIC SCHEDULE AND ALL THE MAKEUP THAT'S APPLIED WHEN FILMING, HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR COMPLEXION CLEAR AND GLOWING? WHAT'S YOUR RED CARPET AND DAY-TO-DAY STYLE LIKE? ARE YOU AN ADVENTUROUS DRESSER OR YOU HAVE CERTAIN FOOL PROOF LOOKS THAT YOU FAVOUR? I use the OxySkin Revitalizing Spray from Bella Skin Care a lot. It actually has a lot of oxygen inside and I use it to refresh myself. I spritz it before I put on makeup and to reset it after a long period. I use it for everything actually. WHAT IS THE ONE GOLDEN RULE YOU STICK TO WHEN IT COMES TO HAIR AND HAIR CARE? I will never leave the house with dripping wet hair. I grew up being told that I can get headaches and "tou hong" (Hokkien) if I don't blow dry my hair. WHAT ARE YOUR THREE MUST-HAVE BEAUTY PRODUCTS? One of them has to be the Vidal Sassoon Magic Style Activator for Curls. Although this is for curly hair and my hair isn’t curly, it’s actually quite good for straight hair as well because it helps to reduce frizz, so I carry a small bottle with me in my bag. Sometimes my hair gets frizzy, especially in Singapore’s humid climate, and I get a lot of flyaways which doesn’t look good on camera. So I use this to touch up. This new Vidal Sassoon haircut is definitely a refreshing change because when you have the same hairdo for too long, after a while you get bored with it. I’ve been filming for one whole year non-stop, playing one serious role after another, but now it’s like I can go a bit wild until the next role comes about. So I think it’s a good change after a year of sporting a certain look, and it’s a fun style to have for a while. But in terms of the kind of roles I would like to do, maybe it wouldn’t quite go so well with them. To me, your clothes have to match your hair. The thing about having a hairstyle that is edgy is that your whole wardrobe has to change. Honestly, when I was preparing to go for the Vidal Sassoon #GetSassooned media launch event, I looked in my wardrobe and I thought that my clothes were too serious for it. The second is a Sisley hand cream that I like because it is not too sticky or oily. This one is really good because it moisturises your skin without making you feel like you have to wash your hands after. The scent is also really good. It smells very botanical and that helps to perk me up. There’s an eight hour cream that I use for everything – as a lip balm and even for my cuticles. When I go on a flight, sometimes my mouth area gets a bit dry, so I use it there. Now I don’t fly so much, so I use it more as a lip balm, on my cuticles and elbows, which are the very dry areas. 65 GLOW APR-JUN ‘14 l i f e ' s a BEACH F an c y an idyl l ic island g e t a w a y b u t c a n ’t a ff o rd t h e t i me t o go on one? Calvin’s work is detailed and he executes the cut with strong precision – I love my new look because it give me that extra edge while keeping true to my personality.” 78 GLOW APR-JUN ‘14 Glow Hits GLOW HITS The most indulgent beach holiday we've been on... or are dying to take. “The most breathtaking beach getaway I've had has to be Santorini. All those iconic postcard photos of stark white houses against azure skies and sea? They’re all true! I don’t think I’ve ever seen such sapphire-blue water before or since. Throw in the extremely sunny weather, ice-cold coffees and beers, lazy days with late breakfasts and later dinners….one word: bliss.” YEE HUAY, editor “The most indulgent beach holiday I want to go for is to visit the Banyan Tree Seychelles in Mahe, Seychelles. Naturally, the room has to be the Presidential suite. Upon arrival, there will be a beach picnic waiting, with lots of finger food and cool drinks. Setting down our bags in the room, we'll be treated to a spectacular view with our own private pool overlooking the Indian Ocean. As the day winds down, a sumptuous dinner under the stars await. The next few days will be spent in the spa and frolicking on the beach, or going scuba diving to explore the region's native sea life.” JUSTIN, writer “Koh Phi Phi Lee in Thailand. Ever since I saw the movie The Beach in 2000, I fell in love with the beach that not only has pristine blue-green water but is also surrounded by a little mountain range. It feels like a secret heaven hiding by the mountains. And when you swim beyond it, it’s another world that never ends.” ZIMIN, art director “I'm not really a beach person and if I could I would avoid beaches as much as possible. However the one beach-ish vacation I'd really like to take would be the Tanzania and Northern Mozambique safari and beach experience. It would be really exciting to visit a traditional African safari. Plus, Mozambique is home to one of East Africa's most beautiful beaches. So it would be the perfect land and sea combination holiday!” VICTORIA, writer 80 GLOW APR-JUN ‘14 “The Galapagos Islands, home of fearless animals, is my dream beach destination. I'd love to hike right up to flamingos, walk among hundreds of marine iguanas and swim next to giant turtles. The government limits the number of visitors to the islands to preserve the serenity of the ecosystem. This means being able to experience awe-inspiring nature without having to compete with hordes of other tourists (indecently dressed or otherwise).” SOPHIA, junior art director
