Newsletter and Diary for July and August
July & August 2015 Prime News is the monthly event diary of The Derby and District MS Society based at the Derby MS Activity Centre Carers Week On Wednesday 10th June to kick off our participation in Carers week, we held our first Traditional Afternoon Tea for our members carers. The event went really well and everyone enjoyed their sandwiches, cream scones and strawberry tarts, on our vintage tea services. Thursday 11th June saw our resident Physio Melanie begin her moving and handling course for carers, Melanie gave our carers advice on the best and safest way to move people. If you or anyone you know would be interested in taking part in a Moving and Handling Course in the future, please do let Becca or Kay know. On Friday 12th June our Tent on Tour took part in the Derbyshire Carers Tea Party at the Derbyshire Cricket Ground, we had a lovely afternoon in the marquee with great entertainment and food all organised by the team at the Derbyshire Carers Association. If you would like any information about the Derbyshire Carers Association and what help they maybe able to offer you , we have leaflets here in the centre or alternatively you can contact them directly on 01332 200002. 1 of 12 Local News Unless otherwise stated, contributed by the members of the MS Society Derby & District Branch at Lilian Prime House. We have now entered the silly season, with our Tent on Tour out nearly every weekend over June and July, (see page 10 for details). So far the Tent on Tour has been to ‘The Big One’ at Chadd Park, The Ramathon and Mickleover Summer Fete, raising awareness for the centre and Multiple Sclerosis. Volunteers are still required for the July events and If you think there is somewhere we ought to send our Tent next year please get in contact with Becca at the Centre. We are hoping to have our new kitchen fitted over the coming weeks, which has kindly been donated free of charge by Howdens Joinery, Derby. Works should not affect the day to day running of the centre, but please do keep your eyes peeled for emails and notices at the centre in-case we run into any difficulties. You will notice in the diary that there is no Saturday Open Day in August, the next Saturday Open Day after July will be Saturday 19th September. It’s coming up to that time of year again when our disclaimer forms need to be reviewed, so please be aware that you will be asked to review your forms with Kay or Becca over the next few weeks. And finally, We’d like to hear from you.. We would like you to send in any articles or information that you would like to share, and would also like to know what you think of Prime News. If there are any changes you think we should make, we would really value your input, so please feel free to email us at centre@msderby.org.uk or, put your ideas in the suggestion box in the foyer. We look forward to hearing from you. 2 of 12 Becca & Kay Derby MS Activity Centre Open Day Derby MS Activity Centre 7 Enterprise Way Saturday 18th July 2015 10am—2:30pm Come along to our open day at the Derby MS Activity Centre. When my husband Bal Samra and I, parents of two teenage boys, had an idea to raise some money for Multiple Sclerosis (MS) back in October 2014. We couldn’t comprehend or predict on how the event would have turned out, the result was amazing. Saturday 23rd May 2015 was the first ever ‘Stamp Out MS’ Bollywood Ball in Derby, the aim - to get at least 400 attendees to the event, which did appear to be quite ambitious. People were very unsure on how I was going to pull off such an event, but when I have a plan, there is no stopping!!! For the past 7 months, whilst studying for my Masters, I planned and organised every aspect of the event, devoting many days and evenings organising the entertainment for the night, collecting prizes for the raffle and auction to make the evening a very special and unique occasion. With the help of some good friends and the Derby MS Activity Centre we held two ‘Try and Buy Nights’ and ‘Henna Evening’ for all those wishing to wear traditional outfits on the night. These beautiful garments had been donated from family and friend. Just from these three events we raised around £1,000. The event took place at The Heritage Ball Rooms in Derby. The amazing floral displays on the tables and around the room where supplied by Petals 4U Florist and Flower World. Mama Masala Kitchen supplied and served the food which was described to be outstanding and extremely delicious. I managed to get the help and support of DJ Gurj Singh from Desi Sounds Roadshow and Harj from UVD Lighting, Mr Bindi Sandhu & Mr Amrik Kang from Stoppress PR, Birmingham where very patient with my continuous questions and crazy requests and I would like to thank them for their unswerving support. A full evening of live entertainment began with DJ and singer Nav Johal who gave an outstanding live performance of Bollywood favourites, Dhols played by Beats International from Birmingham and the award winning and absolutely amazing Gabhru Panjab De Mix Team who performed a very colourful traditional Panjabi dance and to bring the evening to a close an awesome performance by traditional Panjabi folk singer ‘JK’ which gave the night the ‘WOW’ factor it rightly deserved, The evening was hosted by the excellent ‘Asian Network TV’ presenter Sukhi Bart. I was amazed by the support we received, and that we sold over 400 tickets, every4 of 12 Local News Unless otherwise stated, contributed by the members of the MS Society Derby & District Branch at Lilian Prime House. Those who were unable to attend, offered generous donations to the cause. Local businesses and some large companies that wish to stay anonymous donated raffle prizes and items to go to auction. The Raffle and auction alone raised a fabulous £1,000. Our aim was for everyone to have a fantastic night and raise awareness and funds for Cambridge Myelin Research and the Derby MS Activity Centre., and everyone agreed we definitely achieved that goal! Bal and I would like to announce the overwhelming amount currently raised stands at £7,000.00 A Massive thankyou to everyone who helped to support the event and to everyone who didn’t manage to come this time... Look out for the next one!! Sainsbury’s Grand Total Over the course of the past year, we have been working with Sainsbury’s Wyvern as their chosen Charity of the Year. To raise funds for the Centre Sainsbury’s have organised events in store and held quiz nights and race nights for their staff, some of their staff also took part in our Fire Walk last October. A big thank you to all our volunteers who helped out with various awareness stands, Bag Packing and other events in store. We are incredibly pleased to announce that the Grand Total raised by Sainsbury’s Wyvern for the Derby MS Activity Centre is a massive, £6885.77 On behalf of the committee, all our Members and Volunteers, we would like to take this opportunity to say a massive THANK YOU!! to all the Staff and Customers of Sainsbury’s Wyvern for their outstanding generousity 5 of 12 The Diary Pages July 2015 A day-by-day guide to the month ahead.
