It's been another busy year for the Augusta Regional SPCA. Our staff worked
closely with rescue agencies both locally and throughout the state to give deserving
animals a second chance of finding their forever homes. By accepting 980 animals
into our adoption program, your SPCA has come to the aid of shelters facing
overcrowded conditions and the risk of euthanizing healthy adoptable animals.
Through our partnership with PetSmart Charities Rescue Waggin’ program 309 dogs
have taken the ride of their lives to destination shelters where they are in demand.
In addition to the Rescue Waggin’ Program, 684 animals have found loving families
through our adoption efforts. Our Agnes Lawrence Spay/Neuter Clinic is still going
strong. Since opening, over 9,800 dogs and cats have been sterilized, significantly
impacting the number of litters being born in our area!
We're gearing up for our annual Pets in the Park event!!! This year's event will
be held on Saturday, September 26th in Gypsy Hill Park, Staunton. Please join
us in the Park and participate in the Walk for the Animals, the Doggone Good Dog
Show, and the Candid Cat Photo contest.
Again, we will be celebrating by hosting "A Cause for Paws", on Saturday,
September 19th at the Best Western Waynesboro. This
year's event features music by The Coolin' Out Band
from the Virginia Beach area who specialize in Beach
Music, Motown, R&B, Shuffle, Disco, Ballads, Oldies
and all the best Dance mixes! We will also of course
still feature the ever-popular and fantastic silent
auction! Plan to come and enjoy the music, heavy
hors d'oevres, and silent auction offerings. And don't
forget your dancing shoes!
RSVP to the SPCA (885-7722) today!

EMPLOYEES
Shelter Director
Debbie Caywood
Bob Scates, an active and dedicated member of
our Board of Directors for 13 years, received our
Volunteer Service Award for 2015. Bob served
as Vice President of our Board of Directors and
Chairman of our Shelter Committee and fulfilled
his term on our Board of Directors in April. The
staff always loved to see Bob arrive at the shelter on
Thursdays it was payday and he signed our checks!
Bob did not miss many Thursdays and always
made decisions that were in the best interest of
the SPCA. Bob was always a strong supporter of
shelter staff and Stacy misses him keeping her pens
in order! We were very happy when Bob agreed to
continue to serve on our Shelter Committee even
though we know Maddie would rather have him
take her to the dog park to play. Congratulations on
your award – you truly are deserving!

The Augusta Regional SPCA received a grant from PetSmart
Charities™ in 2014 to help control the cat populations in zip code
24401.
PetSmart Charities awarded a $6,000 grant to the ARSPCA
for the spaying and neutering of approximately 120 freeroaming cats in an effort to properly address and manage the cat
overpopulation problem in the community. The result: fewer cats
and kittens brought off the streets to our local shelters!
This year we have again been awarded a grant to spay/neuter free roaming cats. This new grant of
$10,000 will allow us to spay/neuter over 180 cats and is available to free roaming cats in Staunton,
Waynesboro, and Augusta County.

Pets in the Park
Join us for our Annual Walk for the Animals!
When you Walk for the Animals, you are helping hundreds of wonderful homeless pets find new homes where
they will never again be abandoned, abused or neglected. Every valuable dollar raised goes toward shelter, medical
treatment, and food for animals that are at risk of being euthanized due to over-crowded shelters.
Your participation and fundraising in the Walk for Animals helps the Augusta Regional SPCA care for more than
1250 cats and dogs each year who are waiting for their forever home, and provide affordable spay/neuter services
to more than 2000 animals annually (and growing!).
Take a walk with your canine companion, friends, colleagues, neighbors to raise money for animals in need. Form
a team or travel solo. Enjoy a fun filled morning with other animal lovers and their four-legged best friends, all while
we help end the tragedy of pet homelessness!
Registration begins at 9 AM. There is no set fee for the event, we encourage you to ask your friends, family, and
co-workers to sponsor your walk. A sponsorship form may be downloaded from our website or SEE INSIDE
BACK COVER OF THIS NEWSLETTER FOR A SPONSORSHIP FORM!

The Augusta Regional SPCA in partnership with the Staunton Augusta Art Center, held an art auction on March
21st, 2014 to benefit both organizations. We invited all area schools to participate in the event by having students
create and donate artwork. We also had artwork donated by local professional artists. The evening featured a
silent auction, live auction, hors d’oevres, music, beer & wine. We received some wonderful artwork from our
young artist friends! Special thanks to Simple Elegance Catering and A Little Something Sweet for providing hors
doeuvres and desserts. We would also like to thank Orville Bame who provided music, Bill Wagner who served as
auctioneer, and Wanda Cook who was our auction clerk.
Art for the Animals
The John Curry Memorial Art Auction
We held this event in memory of our dear friend, The Honorable John
Curry. The idea of a child’s art auction fund raiser was spearheaded by
John. As a member of the SPCA Board of Directors and the fundraising
committee, John was most enthusiastic about the concept. He was
paramount in bringing together the Art Center and the SPCA and we are
eternally grateful for his dedication to our causes and this community.
Pictured at left: Belle Carson Neckowitz, 6, John Curry's granddaughter, the
painting was done by Belle Carson from a photo of her dog, Sadie, who was
adopted from the SPCA. This painting went for the highest bid!

For two summers in a row, Rockbridge Vineyard has invited the Augusta Regional SPCA to join them in
hosting their Summer Breeze Wine Festival. The kind folks at Rockbridge Vineyard offered to split the
proceeds of the entry fees with the ARSPCA. We also collected some very nice donations from festival
goers, wine club members, and the musicians that performed there that day (Scruffy Murphy and
Jimmy O.) We have really enjoyed this event and each year it has been a great success.

Shelter News & Happenings
Saying goodbye to old friends and hello to new ones!
It is hard to believe for the second year in a row,
we have an employee retiring! That is an amazing
accomplishment in the world of animal welfare - the
longevity for shelter workers is 2 to 4 years. On
September 1st, Linda Pettry, our Shelter Coordinator
for Animal Welfare will start a new chapter in her
life – retirement!! Linda has given 27 years to the
Augusta Regional SPCA and has always gone the
extra mile for the animals in our care. Her dedication
and hard work will be missed but we wish her the
best and hope she enjoys her retirement life!
Joining the staff as our new Shelter Coordinator for
Animal Welfare is Ashley Lam. Ashley has previous
experience in the shelter environment and also as
a certified veterinarian assistant. We are excited
to have Ashley join our staff and look forward to
working with her on our team!
Linda handing over her key to Ashley!
Volunteer
Service Awards
This year we are pleased to present Volunteer
Service Awards to Bob Scates (past President,
Vice President SPCA Board of Directors), and
Linda Vann (owner, Simple Elegance Catering).
Bob Scates has served on the Board and been
a dedicated supporter and volunteer with the
SPCA for many years. He has recently retired
from the Board but we know he will continue
his support and still visit us often.
Brenda Vann has outdone herself every time
we have needed her catering services. She and
her staff at Simple Elegance Catering always
provide top notch service and incredible,
crowd-pleasing menus!

renovating and replacing the
dog kennel areas throughout the
facility. The new state-of-theart Shor-Line kennels and epoxy flooring provide safer and healthier housing for
our canine residents. The new dog kennels are brightly colored, have solid walls
to prevent the dogs from sniffing each other and possibly transmitting viruses,
and they are easy to clean. Having this privacy is not only less unsettling for the
dogs but helps prevent the spread of disease. Visitors have commented on the
warm and friendly atmosphere and how happy the resident dogs are in their
new surroundings. Not only was the main kennel area renovated but so was
our isolation room and former animal control kennel space. This former animal
control kennel space now serves as a stopover facility for the Rescue Waggin’™
vehicle as it passes through 5-7 times a month on it’s journey through Virginia.

The ARSPCA was eligible for
the $101,551 grant because they

The first weekend of June 2014 my
wife adopted “Stripes” from your
shelter as our other cat had passed
away just days prior. So, here is a
quick update
about life
with young
“Stripes”
our SPCA
adopted cat.
This first
picture is
“Stripes the Kitten" on his first day at
his new home. He is 9 weeks old and
weighs 1 1/2 pounds in this photo.
Garrett and I both
agree adopting our
doggie Ava (formerly
Hazel) was the best
decision for a dog
for us. She is so well
behaved and lovable
It was 9 years ago today that I got
Annie from your facility. First I'd like
to say that you for helping me heal
from a broken heart from the loss of
my dog Macy.
Annie is doing fine, still very active.
She likes the chuck it, and frizzbe.
In the warmer weather she likes
swimming, and is always up for a
walk. She is not too crazy for rides
though. She will go, but sometimes
I have to pick her up to get her in
her crate. She is very smart, and knows a lot of words. She never has
accidents in the house, and never destroys anything, except her toys.
Though she is pretty good with them, and they do last awhile.
When ever we are out, someone always compliments us on how well
behaved, or pretty Annie is. Our Vet. Dr. Don Costlow likes her a lot.
Just wanted to give you an update and send
updated pictures of Bellona (now Savannah) .
She has been doing great and is so easy to train.
She is such a joy to have around! Just wanted
you to know that she
is doing great and
having the time of her
life! Life would not be
the same without her.
Kittens grow up. Here is Stripes

I have had Winston almost 10 months now and loving

He has brought life
back to my senior

the farm, hasn't

over. He is such a
character and a
blessing!
Thanks so much
for all you guys do
at the SPCA! Your
hard work pays off!
Without you, happy
endings for pets like
Savannah would not
happen.

I adopted Blue about two years ago. The card on the kennel said very
destructive! One of the ladies said Blues previous owner was a truck driver
and she was left in an apartment all day. Thinking to myself (because I fell
in love with her) I thought "No wonder she is destructive!" Well I took her
home and put her in a dog crate long enough to go purchase dog food. When
I got back she had destroyed the crate and was waiting on the porch. I
thought maybe it was my fault because I left her by herself. Well the card on
the kennel cage was telling the truth. She tore up the mattresses on my bed,
ripped screens out of my windows, chewed up a lawn mower seat, chewed
the wood on the outside of the house because she wanted in and tore up
the inside of a car. I was tempted to bring her back to the SPCA but I couldn't.
I renamed her Blue because she has one blue eye and one brown eye. After everything I went through with her
she has turned out to be the BEST DOG EVER! She gets along with other dogs, children, anyone she comes into
contact with. She loves to ride with me in my Ford Explorer and we walk around Gypsy Hill Park most mornings! I
am so glad I did not give up on her!
She is my baby! Thank you SPCA!
We adopted our fur baby from you
all exactly two years ago! She's
ridiculously spoiled rotten - sleeps in
our bed, has a big fenced-in yard for
running, lots of fun toys, and more
than enough love and cuddles! Just
wanted to give a quick update and
say thanks for all you do!
Got this gorgeous fella from your
SPCA in April of 2005. He was 2
years old. You gave us all his paperwork
and we found out his birthday was
the 26th January 2003. Happy to say
that he turned 12 years old!!! Greatest
siamese you could ever meet!
This is Huckleberry (his
name was Tucker when
I adopted him in 2011!),
dressed as the Cowardly
Lion for Halloween. He is
SUCH a good boy - and
the mascot of my business,
"HuckleBerry Fresh".
It's been just over a week now and I wanted to let you all know that Java
is doing great in her new home. On her first day here, she spent several
hours running and climbing, clearly excited to have enough room to play.
Now that she has settled in, she does most of her playing at night... She
has a favorite chair that is great for relaxing and playing as she can nap on
it, but also hide underneath it in preparation for sneak attacks, and climb
up the back of it. As frisky as she is, she is also an unabashed love bug
who is quick to purr purr purr.
Thank you for the care you provide to all the animals at your shelter, and
for helping us humans find such wonderful pet companionship!

One year ago today, we adopted Oskar (former name
Snickers) a very handsome Tabby Fellow.
In honor of his adoption anniversary, Oskar and his
fellow felines will feast on some sliced deli turkey.
Tara is beginning to relax and get into
the routine. She is gaining confidence
and loves going on walks, riding in the
car and, sleeping on her big bed or
the couch. Thank you for saving this
nice dog, she has never gone to the
bathroom in the house or bothered the
cats. She is a sweetheart.
Oskar is an avid hummingbird watcher and faithfully
creates new noseprints on our picture window
as he surveys the yard. He is our “universal cat”,
meaning, he gets along with everybody! He’s a
snuggler and a lover of laps.
He’s also fond of drinking puddles in the bathtub.
You may remember Rocky (you had him
as Ricky). I adopted him about 5 years
ago. Rocky and I (and his cat and sister,
Zelda) moved to Oregon about 3 years ago.
Rocky was diagnosed with epilepsy about
6 months after I adopted him but he's an
otherwise healthy, happy boy. He loves the
ocean and river and hiking. I am thankful
every day that you gave him to me! This
was his pic right after adoption.
We just
wanted to
give you an
update on
Miss Mollie
(adopted
Spring
2012). She
is doing very
well and
loves to go
hiking with
us. She is best friends
with our other dog Duke, who we got
a few months later.
Sparkplug gets along with the other dog, as long as
I am not giving the other dog attention. He is very
jealous. And he is definitely a one person dog. I just
love him to pieces. He still doesn't like my uncle much
but I think that's my uncles fault not Sparkplug's. He
sure doesn't like the rain or snow. He is so funny when
he has to go out. So he sleeps on me a lot. Sits up
pretty. He is house broken. And minds really well. But
he won't stop barking when told. That's his only fault.
Thank you so much for letting me adopt him.
