WESTDALE PARK HOME & GARDEN CENTRE ou ga in vi ll e a 60 s t s o m s ’ d l r d o n W ul a ” e “Th lourf plant co tile a s r ve About us 60 Years at Westdale Park Sixty years seems like a long time but the years have just flown by since my parents Charlie and Eva Clarke moved the Nursery from its origin in Jones Hill to its present site on the Holt Road, about a mile from the Town Centre. Growing many crops including Tomato’s, Carnations, Cucumbers, Fuchsia’s, Chrythsanthumums, Conservatory Plants and one of the largest collections in the Country of Pelargoniums (Geraniums). About 30 years ago having fallen in love with BOUGANVILLEA while on a rare holiday, we decided to make these beautiful plants our main crop. Many plant experts were describing them as the world’s most versatile and colourful plant, which we thought was a very big claim to make, but over the years we have found them to be just that. Although not hardy, we have had them down to -4 they are dormant around freezing but come back into growth when things warm up. Personally, I wouldn’t leave them outside in winter even if they could take -20 OC because you would miss all that winter colour you get in the house, greenhouse, conservatory etc. Open 7 days a week, the Largest Collection in the UK is available for you to view. We show them at many Flower Shows throughout the Country including Chelsea, Hampton Court, Shrewsbury etc. winning many Gold Medal awards. Our main objective these days, is to help bring in Customers for the other businesses in the Home and Garden Theme ~ get started, or expand their current business on site, at present there are many businesses, Ace Dog Grooming, The Floral Designer, Eva’s Kitchen (Cafe); named after one of the founders run by her Granddaughter Louisa, Charlie’s Parlour (Pet Cremation Service) and Avonfield Garden Centre. There are also other opportunities for startups etc. Charlie Clarke is available to give talks and share his expertise “Growing Bougainvillea’s the British Way” to clubs, groups and societies. Please send enquiries to info@westdalenurseries.co.uk or call 01225 863258. Well here’s to the next 60 years, we will not be here, but our 7 children and 16 grandchildren can take Westdale Park on to a bright future in the special town of Bradford-on-Avon the town of our birth Charlie and Trisha Clarke. They will continue to grow in temperatures above 50F (10C) but will tolerate temperatures as low as 35F (2C) but will lose their leaves and become dormant. Your Bougainvillea must be kept frost free overwinter. 2) Watering The amount of watering required depends on the climate and plant size. Give a good soak and allow to dry between watering in the summer and water sparingly in the Winter months. Bougainvillea are drought tolerant plants, but take care not to let them get bone dry or they will drop their bracts, also they do not like their roots sitting in water. (Pour any excess water away if not absorbed after 30mins). 3) Feeding For best results feed about every 7 days between Mid February and October we recommend a high nitrogen feed (Vitax 301) for encouraging new growth. When the new shoots have developed you change to a balanced feed (Vitax feed 101), this colours the young bracts whilst encouraging new growth for the next flush of bracts. Change back to 301 just before the bracts start to fade to start their cycle again, Bougainvilleas are repeat flowering throughout the season following this method. If your plant is overly dry do not feed, moisten today and feed tomorrow. DO NOT BE TEMPED TO EXCEED DOSAGE (professional quality feed, very concentrated) 1 level teaspoon dissolved in 2 Gallons of water, when made up can be stored in a covered labelled plastic container up to a month. Alternatively, Vitax 301 can be used to encourage new growth on lawns or any foliage plants.Vitax 111, can be used for all your flowering and fruiting plants indoor and outdoor and hanging baskets. 4) Pruning Is very important, as Bouginvillea flowers on new growth. Any major pruning should be undertaken in the Spring as new growth starts. Light pruning is recommended after each flowering cycle to enhance the growth for the next flush of colour. 5) Potting Bougainvillea like a well drained, loamy soil and can be grown in plastic or terracotta pots. They are best kept fairly pot bound to encourage flowering. Do not repot plants until they have acclimatised to your conditions (approximately 2-3 weeks). When potting support the root ball at all times, place compost in position and water in to settle, do not compress the roots! In warm weather you may find it beneficial to soak the clay pot in water before repotting. 6) Pests and Disease’s Part of Bougainvillea’s appeal is the fact that they are relatively pest and disease resistant. If any infestation you should always try the least invasive method of control first.
