Summer 2013 - Humane Society Calumet Area
Humane Society Calumet Area Celebrating Over 70 Years of Community Service Making a Difference One Life at a Time Summer 2013 Giving shelter animals a voice Director’s Welcome ANIMAL WELFARE IN NORTHWEST INDIANA: WHAT’S GOING ON? Northwest Indiana is very unique when it comes to animal welfare. There are three Humane Societies within miles of each other, a multitude of rescue groups and two county shelters. In addition, nearly every municipality in Lake County has their own animal control facility. With all of this help, it’s hard to believe that thousands of animals are still in need and without homes. The pet overpopulation problem is overwhelming to comprehend and has become an epidemic. Why is it that with all of these resources in “The Region” that Indiana ranks 35th nationwide in animal welfare? There are no national or state standards or requirements of Humane Societies. We all have different ways of addressing the problem and each are doing the best we can with limited space and funding. It is time that we all come together as a community to solve the problem of homeless animals. It’s time for a change. The Humane Society Calumet Area’s mission statement is to lead the community in the humane treatment of animals. You may have seen recently that there are many new and exciting changes happening for us. The Estelle Marcus Animal Clinic just completed the 2,000th surgery of the year and is now offering vaccines and additional services to the community including a food pantry. “It is time that we come together as a community to solve the problem of homeless animals. It’s time for a change. ” Paws Resale Shoppe has recently moved to a new and improved location. The Paws Shoppe is still located in Highland but now offers double the retail space and ample parking for customers. There is also a loading dock for ease of dropping off donated items or picking up furniture. The store has successfully generated over $500,000 for the animals since opening in 2003. Opening day at 8149 Kennedy Avenue raised $2,000 for the shelter animals. There was a line at the register all day! A corporate office is also being established to make space at the shelter for more animals. The new location will allow administrative staff a proper place to meet with donors and corporate sponsors, write grants, build relationships with like-minded organizations in the community, and host seminars and training along with working on legislative issues. Humane Society Calumet Area, Inc. wants to aide Northwest Indiana in creating a better place for the animals. We want to not only be a resource for people and pets, but also other organizations in the community. We are so glad you have chosen to join us on our mission to improve life in “the Region”. Respectfully, We are stewards of the vision of Evelyn Sweitzer, the founder of HSCA who imagined a better future for animals in Northwest Indiana. We can never forget that she fought for humane conditions for animals over 70 years ago. While we have come a long way since 1941, we still have a long way to go toward a Rachel Delaney Executive Director more humane Region. Transparency is very important to us! Feel free to request a copy of our audited financials, form 990 or asilomar accords. My door is always open to discuss issues within the community or at the shelter. While it’s tempting to breed dogs at home to have adorable little babies in the house. Here are the top 5 reasons why it is best to adopt a puppy, not breed your own. 1) Long-Term Health Consequences - Not spaying or neutering your dog puts them at a much higher risk for life-threatening conditions like pyometra, cancer, and other serious illnesses. Also, your dog may experience changes in temperament after having a litter such as aggression or fear that could become permanent. 2) Harsh Realities - Parents want their children to experience the miracle of life, but sometimes that miracle involves death. It’s not uncommon for a least one puppy in a litter to die or be born dead and sometimes a stressed mother will commit infanticide. Sometimes an entire litter will die. Do you want your kids to see that? 3) Pet Overpopulation - Every puppy bred takes a home away from a shelter animal and contributes to the millions of deaths in shelters every year. 4) Expenses - Even a standard birth costs several hundred dollars in care. If there are complications, you are looking at thousands. You also need to provide shots and deworming for the litter (average is 6-12 puppies) or they may get sick or die. 5) Homes for All - If you find 6 - 12 homes and one or more don’t work out, are you prepared to take the puppies back in 2 months, 2 years? Your puppies can become one of the millions euthanized in shelters and you may be powerless to save them. -Sources: Cristine Travis, Yahoo Network, ASPCA, HSUS HSCA Staff Executive Director - Rachel Delaney Adoption Center Shelter Manager - Liz Popovich Development Dir. - Stephanie Peterson Special Events - Amanda Morrone Volunteer Coordinator - Jenny Bacino HR / Bookkeeping - Karen Grenda Adoption Counselor - Kathy Hughes Adoption Counselor - Michele Cowan Paw Pals Boutique - Laura White Receptionist: Dina Stipes Kennel Staff: Diane Rybicki Clinton George Donna Pender Donna Keen Melinda Wyrick Maria Ortiz Lauren Rothchild Lisa Ramirez Lori Stasinski Erika Salazar Intake Center Intake Coordinator - Mary Spear Behavior Consultant - Kristina Montgomery Behavior Assistant - Kristen Rose Consulting Veterinarian - Katrin Asbury, DVM Lab Technicians: Nicole Arwood Katy Pinkus Stacy Budeselich Kennel Staff: Nathan Velez Breanne Bizon Mike Fedele Marina Milutinovic Estelle Marcus Animal Clinic Medical Director - Jane Lazzara, DVM Clinic Manager - Samantha Bogusz Veterinary Technician - Stephanie Perz Veterinary Technician - Missy Branch Veterinary Assistant - Gary Tiemens Humane Society Calumet Area 421 45th Street Munster, IN 46321 Phone - 219.922.3811 Fax - 219.934.2785 info@hscalumet.org www.hscalumet.org Adoption Center Mon./Wed/Fri/Sat/Sun 11:00am - 4:30pm Tues/Thurs 11:00am - 6:30pm Intake Center Phone - 219-836-2583 Fax - 219-836-2761 Intake Hours Mon/Weds/Fri/Sat 11:00am - 4:30pm Tues & Thurs 11:00am - 6:30pm Sunday - CLOSED Estelle Marcus Animal Clinic Phone - 219-924-7140 Clinic Office Hours Monday - Friday 8:00am - 3:00pm The HSCA is a private, non-profit 501(c)3 animal welfare organization established in 1941. During your life, you retain the ability to access the funds for your needs. If you have a life insurance policy that you no longer need for it’s original purpose, you can use it to support the animals and you may be able to take a tax deduction for its value! A charitable bequest can help reduce the tax burden on your estate. Donations of securities provides the tax benefits of avoiding capital gains tax and a possible income tax deduction. Paper Recycling Program You can help the homeless animals of the HSCA and the environment by simply bringing your newspapers, magazines, mail, school & office papers, notebooks, folders, and catalogs to our green and yellow recycle bins. We have consistently received around $200 per month thanks to your donations! Please do not put cardboard in the bins! Did you know? For every ton of paper recycled (each bin holds 2 tons): 7,000 gallons of water is saved 390 gallons of oil is saved 17 fewer trees are used 60 pounds of greenhouse gases are avoided Birthday Parties at the Shelter Shelter birthday parties are a great option for children who love animals. Imagine having a party for your child and not cooking or cleaning! For as little as $150, the HSCA will host a party for up to 20 kids (additional kids $5 each) featuring a behind-the-scenes shelter tour, cake, ice cream, drinks, games, animal play time and more! Dogs love shelter birthday parties, too! Your pup can invite his doggy friends for a time of games and dog birthday treats. Throw your best friend the birthday bash of his life. Stardust Bowl II in Merrillville, IN offers the Alley Cat Special every Monday. Make a $2 donation to HSCA and play for only $1.50 per game. All donations go directly to the animals at the shelter. Stardust Bowl II is open Mondays from 9am to 11pm. Call 219-942-0432 for more information. Thanks HSCA for this wonderful opportunity to adopt him. Our son adores him and I think Jorge adores him, too. We are so happy he picked us that day! Julie Merkel CJ is a very friendly cat, he loves to cuddle by me every night and he loves running and playing when he’s in my room! He’s a very loveable cat, He meows and meows when he wants attention or even when he wants more food or water, he’s a very good boy with a loving home! When i took him to get his updated shots the employees fell in love with him right away because he loves to be petted! I’m glad i was able to adopt him from the Calumet Humane Society in Munster, Indiana. Candace Wilson 7 - Humane Society Calumet Area I adopted Daisy at 10-months-old from HSCA in August 2000. Being a Border Collie, she was high energy, but also very smart. Her daily “chore” was to put away her toys at the end of the day. She woudl softly growl, as if she was pouting, with each toy she dropped into the toy basket. Daisy would have been an asset to the DEA - she would not take a pill. I tried hiding them in peanut butter, roast beef, liver sausage, cheese, etc. She would sniff and walk away. Daisy passed away on February 25, 2013. I loved her dearly and miss her terribly. She was my heart. Anna Waters Here are some pictures of the little boy that we adopted for Christmas. At the shelter he was known as Red but in hopes of a completely different life for him, the kids decided that he needed a completely different name. It is now Petey...or Petester, sometimes sweetie Petey , and on occasion Stinky Pete. We do love him so! You would be so proud of him. He is smart and well behaved but I am especially humbled by his loving personality. He is just a little dude who wants to love and be loved. Petey is not perfect, but he really is perfect for our family. Thank you again for the time you took away from your chores to talk with us about him. He wins everybody’s heart that meets him... Definitely an asset to the world. He is happy! Just wanted to send you some updated pictures of Layla. I adopted her from you back in December, she is now 5 months old, and doing VERY well!! [She is] 99% potty trained, and very loveable!! She has such a personality already!! Loves everyone!! Mary Rosenbaum Adoption Center Animals Waiting for a Second Chance... Bella 4 year old Male Boxer / Staffordshire Terrier Bella’s favorite hobbies include playing in kid’s wading pools and playing tug with toys. She is very affectionate, has a winning smile, and an adorable bowlegged walk. Bella loves to take walks and has great leash manners. Cypress 11 years old Female Domestic Longhair Cypress is a beautiful girl with bold, calico markings. She’s a diva who loves to have her head petted, but wants everything on her own terms. She’s quite the chatterbox and will respond when you talk to her. Theo 6 years old Male Domestic Shorthair Theo is probably the most relaxed cat at the shelter. He has turned taking it easy into a science. He is a very affectionate cat who enjoys a good snuggle with cat or human friends. He can make friends with just about anybody and, boy, can he nap. King 2 years old Male Doberman Pinscher mix King is a silly guy who is quick to offer up a toy for play. He has lots of energy and would love an active home. He’s a smart boy and it’s impossible not to be happy around him. King is a big boy so he would prefer a home with no small children. Want to see more animals?
