Research Fellow, National

Greatest accomplishment:
Being on this newspaper.
Favorite class and why: AP
Biology. Mr. Meador tells the
best stories (If you ever see
him in the hall, ask him about
the “weed story”. He’ll know
what you’re talking about).
Most challenging course
and why: AP Spanish. The
teacher doesn’t know how to
talk in English.
Future plans: To go to college
and then maybe, if I’ve feeling
it, attend medical school.
Most memorable teacher
and why: Ms. Katovich because not only does she make
her class very entertaining
through her wacky personality, but she truly cares and
wants the best for each of her
students.
Things you will miss most
about HEHS: Suz, Jen, Derek, Sean, Mark, and all the
other great teachers.
Motivation for academic excellence: As much as I love
Taco Bell, I don’t think I’d be
a good employee there.
Activities and Offices held
(and years):B.P.A. (3 years)
– Communications Officer;
Debate Team (3 years) – Captain; Math Team (4 years);
Scholastic Bowl (4 years);

years); Tennis (3 years)

National Merit Finalist; National AP Scholar; Daily
Herald Academic Team Honorable Mention; D211 Board
of Education Award of Excellence; Academic Scholar
Greatest accomplishment:
By far, getting into Penn.
Beating Colton in Super
Smash Bros.
Favorite class and why: AP
Biology (minus the lab reports) because we learn about
how things live and breathe
(breathing is more complicated than you think).
Most challenging course
and why: AP World History
has been the hardest class be-
cause we were the first freshman class to take it so everyone, including Mr. Brown,
was new to the course.
However, Browny-ji took us
through it.
Future plans: Study finance
at the Wharton School at the
University of Pennsylvania.
Take on Wall Street and Silicon Valley.
Most memorable teacher
and why: Fetherling is one
of the best teachers I have
had.She absolutely loves
teaching Bio which makes
the class even more enjoyable. Mrs. Katovich is an
AP Chem god, she has such
a distinct personality, that
makes her one of the most
memorable teachers.
Things you will miss most
about HEHS: Friends and
teachers
Motivation for academic
excellence: I want to leave a
lasting impact on the world,
ideally for the better.
Activities and Offices held
(and years): President of the
National Honor Society (11,
12), Captain of Student Congress Debate (9, 10, 11, 12),
Girls’ Tennis (10, 11, 12), Orchestra (9, 10), Global Awareness and Relief Organization

Special Honors and Awards:
AP Scholar with Distinction,
Athletic Scholar, National
Spanish Honor Society, Spir-
it of the Hawk, Illinois State
Scholar.
Greatest accomplishment:
When NHS raised enough to
bring clean water to seventytwo people.
Favorite class and why: I
am the nerd that just liked all
of school.
Most challenging course
and why: AP World History
was just a lot of confusion. It
was the first AP class for both
Mr. Brown and us. Thankfully, we made it through alive
with Mr. Brown’s motiva-
tional talks.
Future plans: This fall, I
will be attending Georgetown University in Washington D.C. I’m going to be
studying in the Walsh School
of Foreign Service.
Most memorable teacher
and why: Shout out to Ms.
Katovich, Mr. Mallon, Mr.
Brown, and Mrs. Jenkins
Things you will miss most
about HEHS: I’m also going to miss seeing my best
friends every single day –
even Solome Haile after she
broke my heart.
Motivation for academic
excellence: My parents are immigrants,
so I work hard to
ensure that the sacrifices they make and
continue to make
are worthwhile. In
addition, it’s only
fair that I put in my
share after seeing
the great lengths my
teachers travel to ensure my success.
Activities and Offices held
(and years): Scholastic Bowl
(4), Forensics (3), Orchestra
(1), Tennis (1), NHS (2), Math
Tutoring (1), Newspaper (2),
French Club (1)
Special Honors and Awards:
A Honor Roll, Academic
Scholar, Miscellaneous Forensics Competition Awards, AP
Scholar with Distinction
Greatest Accomplishment:
Getting the highest score,
103%, on the French Revolution AP Euro test out of all
three classes.
Favorite class and why: AP
Chemistry was enthralling.
Every day was full of learning
and excitement, although I still
pass on the rushed craziness of
finishing a lab.
Most challenging course and
why: AP Chemistry and AP
Euro are two of the most challenging classes I took.
Future plans: I plan to go to
Northwestern University, to
study Cognitive Science and
Biology and then becoming a
plastic surgeon later in life.
Most memorable teacher and
why: Ms.Katovich is one of
the most awesome, inspiring,
intelligent teachers I have ever
had. I enjoyed every minute of
her class.
Things you will miss most
about HEHS: Orange. Also,
all of my hooligan friends, and
more people who made everyday just a bit more fun.
Motivation for academic excellence: Also, I plan for the
future, and I know studying will
make my future a lot brighter,
sort of like a good detergent.
Schoology

years): Tennis (3 years), Badminton (3 years), NHS (2 years),
Newspaper (3 years), Yearbook (3
years), FreshMentors (1 year)
Special Honors and Awards:

Greatest accomplishment: I’m
happy that I was able to accomplish
my goals of participating in two
sports for three years, participating
in clubs, volunteering outside of
school, working, getting accepted
to my top choice college, and keeping my grades up.
Favorite class and why: One was
freshman year geometry because it
was the first time where I truly felt
engaged to the material I was learning.
Most challenging course and
why: My most challenging course
was definitely Calc BC because it
took me a long time to understand
the important concepts behind
them.
Future plans: In the fall I will be
attending Duke University majoring in neuroscience and minoring
in psychology and/or Japanese. I
hope to learn a lot in college and
travel.
Most memorable teacher and
why: very much enjoyed Ms. Carroll’s, Mrs. Coakley’s, Mrs. Davey’s, Mr. Dowd’s, Mr. Mallon’s,
Mr. Mead’s, and Mr. Swanson’s
classes during my four years here.
They each had an element that
made me want to work extra hard
for them!
Things you will miss most about
HEHS: I will miss the warm, protective environment of high school
while still having the opportunity
to gain independence. I will miss
my friends and teachers, the publications office and taco salads on
Fridays.
Motivation for academic excellence: My parents always encouraged me to pursue whatever it was
I felt passionate about- whether it
be sports, music, academics- and
reminding me that there isn’t just
one set path towards success.

Greatest accomplishment:
QualifyingtostateinCrossCountrymy
senior year and Track my junior year.
Winning the Indoor State 4x800 race.
Favorite class and why: Chemistry because I could visualize the
different particle interactions that occurred with my everyday activities.
Most challenging course and why:
Physics was always forcing me to
think things through many times over.
I had to beat it into my brain to get it.
Future plans: I plan on attending
Vanderbilt University and majoring
in Chemistry with a possible minor
in Physics. I hope to go into research
in the field of waterborne diseases
and return to Ethiopia and other third
world countries to help in this field.
Most memorable teacher and
why: Mr. Macnider has always been
someone to push me mentally and
physically. Those moments of feeling invincible were made because of
his and Mr. Ihms’ sacrifice and commitment to my success. Mr. Swanson
is another favorite that was the right
mix of hilarious dancing and awesome teaching. The weekly “Friday”
sing-alongs will always stay with me.
Things you will miss most about
HEHS: I will surely miss the amazing teachers that were so dedicated to my success and my quirky
friends. I will also miss running
with my teammates and coaches
I will surely not miss Daniel Heydari because he is too awesome.
Motivation for academic excellence: Learning is truly a gift. Most
of the world cannot dream of the
amount of knowledge I have had
the ability to obtain. Those billions
without this opportunity compel me
to place education as a top priority.

class and Mrs. Phillips was a great
teacher to have. She was very nice about
everything even if we joked around in

as seriously as others throughout High
School. This made it difficult to follow
along with the listening and reading ac-

goal is to get on the pre-med track and
then hopefully get into a good medical

to pick, I guess it would
be getting into some really
awesome colleges including
my dream school.
Favorite class and why:
AP Chemistry because I got

fun class that I looked forward to everyday.
Most
challenging course and
why: Calc BC because I just
didn’t get it.
Future plans: I plan on going to UCLA and living in
sunny Southern California
for the next four years. I’m
going in with an undeclared
major and we’ll see where it
goes from there.
Most memorable teacher
and why:I’ve had a lot of
memorable teachers. One
of them is definitely Ms.
Katovich because she’s just
amazing. My other memorable teacher is Mr. Brown. He
is a wonderful teacher and
connects with his students,
making you feel that you’re
important and you matter.
Both, Ms. Katovich and Mr.
Brown, care about their students inside and outside of
the classroom.
Things you will miss most
about HEHS: I’m going to
miss the teachers I devel-
oped a bond with. I’m going

Favorite class and why: AP
Biology because it was a really
smooth way to end the day for
me. Oh, and Mrs. Fetherling
was sometimes nice too.
Most challenging course and
why: AP Biology just because
the workload would sometimes become overwhelming
and there was often a lot of information I needed to learn in
a short amount of time, which
added to the pressure.
Future plans: I plan to follow
a Pre-Med track at UIC and
later hope to gain entrance into
medical school. If that doesn’t

Most Memorable Experience:
My sophomore musical was
Bye Bye Birdie. I was running
a scene with a fellow actress in
front of the whole cast and crew
including the directors. The
scene consisted of us ranting
about how stupid and horrible
men are. I must have experienced a Freudian slip because I
flubbed a line. I was supposed
to say “egotistical” but, instead,
out came - in front of everyone “ego-testicle”... Needless to say,
I was mortified and will never
live it down.
Future Plans: I’ll be attending Harper College for the next
two years as a Communications
