As I replay the events of
the past few months in my
mind, it seems like the club
has taken on a life of its
own. Each project we begin comes with a myriad of
expectations that must be
met, to be both legal and
functional. To build docks and breakwaters, you
must have permits. To get permits, you must fill
out forms and see the bureaucrats, and so on
and so on. What I have discovered is two-fold:
getting anything done takes at least three times
longer than you’d expect. And then you need
people—people who are able to work together.
To this end, we are very lucky to have great people, who are not only willing to do the work, but
who have the expertise to guide us through the
process.
As the lake is nearly at capacity, our new E
dock is complete. Special thanks to John Ward,
electrician extraordinaire, and Kevin Dickey, our
plumbing guru, for putting the final touches on
this project. Of course, this project would have
never been launched without the hard work of
Glen Hughes, Gordon Mattatall, and the many
members who put in long hours in less than ideal
conditions. Well done!

The club house renovation is finished, with
the exception of the carpet and new countertops. The painting of the floor is finished and
cured, but we all need to be vigilant these next
few weeks in regard to anything tracked in that
could still damage the floor.
The next two items on the agenda are first,
the preparation of our year’s biggest event, Sail
School, and second, the idea of putting in a
rock breakwater in place of an attenuator. As we
replace the old docks, we must be vigilant with
the protection of the new ones. At this time, it
looks like a permanent rock jetty will be a more
cost-effective solution for our needs.
I am calling every project/function mentioned
above Phase 1. There is much more to do in
Phase 2, and I’m hoping by Phase 3, we will all
be reaping the benefits of all the hard work done
to date. I would be remiss if I did not thank the
usual suspects—but I think they know who they
are.
On a fun-related note, mark your calendar for
April 9, the date our annual Skippers and Mates
social gathering. This social event becomes even
more special as we view this as the Grand ReOpening of our EYC clubhouse. As an added
treat, we will be welcome Michael Tieman, one
of our own members, as our guest speaker.
Michael recently participated in the world class
event, the Sydney to Hobart ocean race in Australia. All the pertinent event details are included
inside the newsletter (see page 4).
As promised at the last general meeting and
in my last column, we completed the job description for our Club Hosts. Copies of the description will be available and specifics will be
addressed at the next general meeting, March
19. The language of the old agreement has been
cleaned up and, as we take a more professional
approach to the Club Hosts’ tenancy in the
club trailer, we will now be charging for rent. In
exchange, our club hosts will be compensated
for their job duties at an hourly rate for hours
worked. This is a big change from our contracts
with our caretakers in the past as this is not a
salary. All of the details will be available at the
March 19 potluck and general meeting. Hope to
see you there.

Spring has sprung! My
rhodies have begun to
bloom and our boating
season cannot be far behind. The water is coming up quickly and we will
be able to launch shortly.
Well, many can already
launch on the north ramp
as evidenced by the UO
and OSU Sailing Teams which have begun their
seasons and are out on the water regularly. The
newly assembled E Dock, which was put together
on a dry north ramp, is now afloat and will wander
over to its intended position in a week or so.
So it is time to roll the boats out of the shed,
take the covers off, and screw on those shiny
new Christmas presents. The first races are a
month away. This year I hope everyone tries out
the Tuesday evening Fun Races at least once.
The opening of the season’s social calendar is the
Skippers and Mates dinner on Saturday, April 9.
The EYC website went down a week ago, but
it is up and running once again. You can find links
there to register for Sail School and the Memorial
Day Regatta.
The clubhouse has been undergoing a facelift on the interior. It will look about the same, but
new—all new paint and carpet and so on. We are
not allowed to walk on the new epoxy floor just
yet, but you will be able to at the Potluck and
General Membership Meeting on Saturday, March
19. Please note the date as it was moved up a
week to avoid conflict with the Easter Weekend.
The club is working on a proposal to build a
breakwater to better protect our docks, beach,
and basin. And we are planning to remove the
underground gas tank which has just about
reached its lifespan.
Some events to look forward to this season
are our regattas. We will be hosting the Memorial
Day Regatta on Memorial Day weekend. The Live
on the Edge Multi-hull Regatta is June 11-12.
The Lido 14 National Championship is at EYC
July 15-17. Glen Hughes bought a new boat just
for the occasion! And EYC will host the Thistle
Nationals July 23-29, and that will be a party! We
end the regatta season with the Harvest Regatta
on August 13-14. No excuses!
This year EYC will be doing the 4th of July
festivities in a big way. Our vendor has asked us
to buy twice as many fireworks as we have in
the past, and we will, so the show is going to be
amazing. We are hoping to do a charity event on
Labor Day weekend. More information will follow
on that in the near future.
On the business side, dues are way past due.
If you have not paid your dues, please call me.
Moorage bills will go out in a month to those of
you who have current tags on your boats and
have turned in your moorage request form.
A Word to the Wise from Dave Brown
A few reminders for the upcoming season:
1. If you plan on driving a powerboat, get your Oregon Boater
Education Card. The course can be done online.
2. Check life jackets, fire extinguisher, and other safe equipment
aboard your boat.
3. Check old dock lines and replace them with required lines.
4. Be sure your boat registration is current.
The lake is filling, so do what needs to done now so you’re ready for fun sooner than later!

Singing the Burger Night Blues

Picture this: it’s a beautiful Thursday evening with plenty of good sailing, and the promise of a tasty
hamburger is speeding you towards the dock. Racers have all grown accustomed to this scenario and
have perhaps grown a bit complacent in the thought that someone will always be there to provide it.
Unfortunately, at this time, we are a little more than one month from our Spring series and we have
no chairperson in place to carry on this tradition. In the past, this was a fleet responsibility and—until
Janet Mitchell of the Wavelength Fleet took it over—it was done by the Santana 20’s, Thistles, Wavos, Multis, and PHRF fleet, alternating yearly, with four weeks in
the summer hosted by Triton Yacht Club.
We really need someone to step up and get this EYC tradition
organized for this year. If we can’t find a Burger Meister, we will
either leave it to the fleets or perhaps skip burgers entirely. This
position receives full work party credit and, without a doubt, the
love and undying gratitude of many, many racers. And it’s not like
you have to reinvent the wheel as there are several folks who will

use the website’s Moorage Assignments then
select Moorage 2015 to request confirmation.
Type in your last name and first initial, then
select ‘Submit’. This should show you a list of
your moorage. If you do not know how your last
name appears in the database, you can go to
moorage assignment for 2015 and look at your
name as I have it.
If you do not have a login and password for
the website contact Ted Walkup or myself.
Remember that registering on the website is only
if you want the same moorage as last year. If you
wish to move or have a new moorage request,
you’ll need to fill out a paper registration form.
Moorage Registration Forms are due by
March 20. File now or lose your spot.
Once more we have had winds that were over
the top and several boats were damaged. There
are also several boats that do not have covers or
the cover is in disrepair. Please check your boat
and make sure that all is well. Also remember that
I will do a walk-around the week of March 21 to
check boats on the grounds. If a boat does not
have current Oregon registration, I will not issue
moorage to that boat and you may loose your
moorage spot if another member asks for it.
As of this writing, the lake fill is right on target.
I am looking forward to a year with good water.
The long-range forecast is an inch above normal
for March, so I see no reason to not believe that
we will have full pool this year.

EYC Member Ken Higgins has graciously donated his recently
refurbished Catalina 22 to Lane County Youth for Christ which will
auction it off at its fundraiser on Sunday, April 10. The boat is one of a
variety of valuable items to be offered.
The auction will take place at the Eugene Hilton. Doors open at
4:00 pm for a silent auction, followed by an optional dinner at 5:00
pm ($50.00). If you are interested only in bidding on the boat, the live
auction begins at 6:30 pm.

Nationals Babysitting Opportunities
Stuart Ramsing, 2016 Thistle Nationals Regatta Chair
Both the Lido and Thistle fleets are hosting national regattas at EYC in July. Some of our traveling sailing families are multiplying and bringing babies with them. We love seeing this new generation
come along, even if some of the next generation is still a bit too wobbly to be good forward crew.
The fleets and EYC have decided not to officially sponsor babysitting, but we are happy to put
interested parents in contact with potential babysitters to make their own arrangements.
This could be a great way to make some money
this summer wjo;e having fun with kids and hanging out at EYC. All you
need to do is provide me (stuart.ramsing@gmail.com) with your phone
or email contact and we’ll share it with those looking for a babysitter.

Thursday Night Racing Almost Here

Hello, Racers. Our first practice race is coming soon. Assuming a successful buoy
launch, we will have our first practice race on April 7 and the first race of the Spring
Series on April 14. Leta Sellers has been working hard to coordinate a plan for
burgers, but it is unlikely that it will be in place for the practice race.
Nic Pierce and I will be working up the Race Committee and Rescue Duty rosters soon, so please register if you plan to race this season (or if you might race
and would be willing to do RC or Rescue). I have already sent an email to all the
people whose registrations I have on file from 2015. If you did not receive that
email, please use the registration form that is published in this newsletter (page 22)
and email it or snail mail it to me right away. It is a huge help to have a complete
roster of people at the beginning of the season. Thanks.
Spring Sailing Set in Motion
Janika Jordan, UO Sailing Team
Team racing began in April on Lopez Island in
the San Juan Islands. We were met by strong and
shifty winds, making our V-15 races fast-pace and
lively, not to mention challenging. The first day
of racing out of Fisherman’s Bay was a sunny 60
degrees with unsteady 16-20 knot winds. Sunday
proved more overcast, but the wind blew steadier
and the team racing intensified. Unfortunately, UO
Sailing did not get the results we hoped for, placing second in a majority of the races.
We are looking forward to our women’s team
clinic and the start of our qualifying season in the
coming month!

The UO Sailing team has officially launched
its racing season as it began practices at Fern
Ridge last month. The Whaler is back in the water
and we are excited to be back out running drills.
On February 20-21, we sailed in the NWICSA
spring clinic in Seattle’s Lake Washington. It was
a great opportunity for both new and experienced
skippers and crew to improve their skills with a
few days of focused work. A number of UO alumni and the members of the US Sailing Foundation
came out to give us some invaluable coaching.
After working on boat handling and basics, Saturday was cut short by a lack of wind. Once the
wind filled on Sunday we spent the entire day running team races in various combinations of skill
and schools, which forced everyone to be aware
of strategy.
We were given new Nike jackets for participating in a fundraiser for the UO Club Sports program. These new green and yellow windbreakers
were screen-printed with the University of Oregon
“O” and “Sailing.” We are excited to finally have
matching gear and look like an official team!
Some members of our team came out to an
EYC work party to help clean up and repair the
grounds after winter. We are so grateful for the
support of the members of the yacht club and are
pleased to contribute to the maintenance of the
facilities.

OSU Sailing: We’re Baaack!

Finally! We are back at EYC!
Last week, we launched our
boats for our first practice of
the season. While we have
had plenty of racing time this
winter, it was nice to have organized practices once again.
In addition to our EYC practices, we have been
cultivating a relationship with the Yaquina Bay
Yacht Club, which has offered to host and coach
occasional practices for us. We had a blast-anda half-sailing 420s for some team racing practice
last week.
Last weekend saw us on Lopez Island for the
NW Team Race regatta. The sun, steady winds,
and excellent venue made for a perfect weekend
of racing on Vanguard 15s. Our team has agreed
that it was the most fun weekend of sailing that
we have ever had. If anyone is looking for a sailing
getaway that is close enough for a weekend trip,
we highly recommend the Lopez Islander Resort.
We have some pretty big plans for Spring
Break this year, with a three-day clinic in Port
Townsend with our buddies on the University of
Oregon Team. This was supposed to be preceded
by the Western Canada Cup, but due to high
travel expenses, we reluctantly had to withdraw.
However, we are making the best of the situation
by heading up to the Columbia River Gorge with
the UO sailing team for a weekend of much-needed pleasure sailing.
On April Fool’s Day, we will be sending some
sailors to the St. Francis Invitational in San Francisco. This is sure to be very competitive, as we
will be racing against varsity teams from all over
who have much more experience and funding
than our team, challenging even the best of our
sailors.
We are also in the process of fundraising for
our team. With a growing team and limited resources, any sort of help, monetary or otherwise
is greatly appreciated. If you wish to contribute
to our campaign, please contact us at sailing@
oregonstate.edu. We also have some fund raising
events planned, so keep a lookout for them!
We will continue to give updates through the
season, but you can follow our progress more
closely on the OSU Sailing Facebook page and
on Instagram.

The OSU Sailing Team at Lopez Island
Test Your Rules Smarts
Boats W (a windward boat) and L (a leeward boat) are
sailing close-hauled towards the windward mark, with
W two lengths of L. For tactical reasons, W wants L to
tack,so W bears away 15 degrees below close-hauled,
reaches onto L’s wind, then luffs back up to close-hauled.
L, in bad air, tacks and protests W for sailing below her
proper course. You are on the protest committee. How
would you decide this?
Answer: There is no rule requiring W to not sail her proper course.
W is required to keep clear of L under Rule 11 (On the Same Tack,
Overlapped),which she does. Boat L’s protest is disallowed.

Exploring the Benefits of Finely-Tuned Forestay Sag

A key element of upwind performance is forestay sag, or to put it another way, how loose the
forestay (or head stay on a masthead rig) is for the
given set of wind and sea conditions.
The setup is crucial to boat speed and pointing
as it sets up the entry and power of the headsail,
as well as the effectiveness of both sails as one
combined foil.
Why forestay sag is fast in light air but
slow when overpowered
Forestay sag is fast in light air because it
opens up the luff of the sail to the wind, powers
up the jib, and in effect moves the sheeting angle
inboard as the leech profile of the sail moves in as
the luff of the sail moves out.
This is like “in-hauling” the jib or putting a set
of sheeting tracks inboard. The net effect of this is
more power and higher pointing.
The draft of the sail moves forward and toleeward and it helps the sail to respond more dynamically in light air to puffs and lulls.
Diminishing returns set in with forestay sag
when the boat starts to become overpowered.
The headsail gets too deep and round, causing
too much leeway and the mainsail to back wind
too much. When this happens you have a net loss
in both speed and pointing and it is time to take
the sag out.
What controls forestay sag?
• Upper shrouds on aft-swept spreaders. The tighter the upper shrouds, the tighter the forestay. This is not the case with in-line spreaders where the uppers do not control forestay sag.
• Lower shroud tension. This helps keep the
lower part of the mast in column so that when
backstay is applied it can go more directly to
forestay tension.
• The length of the forestay. A longer forestay creates more sag, as the wind increases the

forestay can be shortened to reduce sag.
• Adjustable aft-lowers (as on a Santana 20).
The more aft-lower that is applied, the
tighter the forestay. We use the aft-lowers in
conjunction with the backstay to keep a good
form shape in the mainsail luff curve.
• Backstay tension. Pulling on the backstay tightens the forestay and flattens the headsail.
• Mainsheet tension. The tighter the mainsheet,
the more the mast bends, the less forestay
sag.
• Mast heel position. On boats like J24’s that
have adjustable mast heels or chocks like on
an Etchell’s, this controls pre-bend in the
mast or the ‘pre-stress’ of the mast to fit the
luff curve of the mainsail. As the heel comes aft, the mainsail becomes flatter and the top of the mast goes forward, increasing forestay sag. As the heel of the mast goes forward the pre-bend is reduced, the mainsail becomes fuller and the forestay tightens, flattening the headsail.
• Running backstays that have termination
points at the forestay. The tighter the runner,
the less forestay sag for a flatter headsail.

Measuring forestay sag when sailing
A good way to measure the sag is to go sailing
and anchor a spare halyard down next to the tack
of the headsail and tighten it as much as possible. Then, sight up the forestay and look at the
distance between the firm halyard and where the
biggest amount of sag is relative to that halyard.

in the mainsail. This indicates that we are over
bending the mainsail to the designed luff curve
and also that the given backstay application is not
giving us the required forestay tension. This typically indicates the rig is too loose, the forestay is
too long, or the mast heel is too far back with too
much pre-bend in the mast for the stronger wind.

Is the forestay too tight when sailing?
J105s have medium forestay sag in medium air
Is the forestay too loose when sailing?
One of the telltale signs is that the mainsail
luffs early and often despite the fact the backstay
is on tight. When setting the boat up upwind, try
to get the luff of the headsail and the luff of the
mainsail to break as closely together as possible.
This allows the mainsail luff earlier than the headsail.
The reason is primarily that one of the by-products of the sag is the luff of the headsail opens
up to the wind but the back of the sail—the leech
profile—returns inboard which, when in excess,
can cause excessive back wind in the mainsail
and the headsail to be too deep.
In this situation we typically tension the backstay to reduce this. If this isn’t effective, it’s an
indicator that the rig is too loose or the forestay is
too long, or, on some boats, the mast heel is too
far back (too much pre-bend). These are common when sailing in light air and when the wind
increases progressively during the race.
Another indicator of too much forestay sag for
If a forestay is too tight, the headsail will look
too flat on the entry, despite easing the backstay.
The headsail will also look too flat and the boat
will feel very underpowered in the lulls with a very
tight steering groove. The genoa will tend to luff
early relative to the mainsail.
This very often happens when the boat was
set up with a tight rig or tight forestay for heavier
air and then the wind has dropped.
What’s the right amount of forestay sag?
This varies from class to class and it is best to
consult your sail maker for exact numbers, but the
basic principles that we are looking at will apply.
Watch carefully how the headsail and mainsail
luffs break. Are they working fairly close together
or is there a big gap in when they luff? Does the
headsail look too full and the boat feel overpowered, or do we have a good steering groove?
As an example, in a boat like a J24, eight to
ten inches of sag is good for light air. For lots of
power, four to six inches in medium air to maintain good pointing. In heavy air you want as little
sag as possible to keep the headsail flat and the
sails working well together.
I remember coaching at a heavy air J105 regatta where it was blowing 25 to 30 knots and in
watching the boats go upwind, I could tell by the
rig set ups who the top boats were. The teams
with the most rigid, tightest forestays had flat jibs
and mainsails that were driving.
Teams who had more forestay sag had fuller
jibs. Their mainsails were luffing early and often
and they did not point as high or track as well.

If you don’t have an adjustable backstay, have
a roller furler, and the spreaders are in line and
not swept back, you’ll want to have marks on the
forestay turnbuckle for light, medium, and heavy
air and adjust it at the dock prior to racing for the
given days conditions.
Your sail maker will be able to recommend how
loose to have the forestay in lighter air to help with
sag for the sails design and then how tight to go as
the wind increases.

What if I don’t have an adjustable backstay?

When tuning the boat, set up for the lulls not the puffs. If the wind is 8 to 12 knots, set up for the 8
knots knowing that in the puffs you can always de-power with steering, hiking and, if available, backstay tension. If the boat is set up for 12 knots, performance will suffer in the light spots as there will be
little recourse for powering up.
In light air, a good mantra is to “Be the first boat hiking.” In other words, set the boat up for power
so your crew will be hiking before any other teams. The correct amount of forestay sag will be a critical
component to making this happen.

Sail School is held each summer at Eugene Yacht Club to teach and
inspire all participants to become better sailors. Working together,
an all-volunteer crew provides a body of knowledge and expertise.
Mother Nature provides a body of water. The combination is a magical
experience of fun and friendship for our sailing family.

MEMORIAL DAY REGATTA
MAY 28 - 29, 2016
NOTICE OF RACE
You are cordially invited to participate in the 2013 Memorial Day Regatta, hosted by the
Eugene Yacht Club. The Regatta will be governed by the rules as defined in the Racing Rules
of Sailing 2013-2016, except as any of these may be altered by the Sailing Instructions or by
class rules that do not conflict with the Rules or Sailing Instructions.
Format: Seven races are scheduled. One race constitutes a regatta. Sailing Instructions and
Course Sheets will be available on May 28 at the Regatta site.
Classes: The Regatta is open to all one-design and PHRF classes. Classes participating in
recent years have included Thistle, Lightning, Star, DaySailer, Snipe, Laser, Santana 20, Lido
14,Viper 640, i550 Sport boat, Holder 20, Ultimate 20, Pelican, Wavelength 24, multi-hulls
and several PHRF Keel boat categories (with valid current certificates from PHRF Northwest).
Scoring and Trophies: Five or more registered boats in a class will be scored as a Fleet.
One race will be thrown out for scoring purposes if six or more races have been completed.
No races will be thrown out if completed races are five or fewer. Provisions will be extended
for handicap racing in a Portsmouth Centerboard Fleet. Trophies will be awarded according to
the number of registered boats in each Fleet.
Registration: Eligible boats may enter by completing the Registration Form and submitting it,
together with the required fee described on the Form. Entries will be accepted until
11:30 am on May 28, 2016.
Entries post marked on or before May 20, 2016 will be discounted $30.00, along with a
$5 US Sailing membership discount. Refund requests must be received on or before May 28,
2016. Find registration form online at www.eugeneyachtclub.net. There will be a link to US
Sailing Regatta Network where you can register and pay for meals, shirts, and entry fees.
You can register and pay online or pay at the regatta. The important thing is to get registered
early to get the discount.
Insurance: Competitors participate in the Regatta entirely at their own risk. See Rule 4,
Decision to Race. The organizing authority will not accept any liability for material damage or
personal injury or death sustained in conjunction with or prior to, during, or after the regatta.
Each participating boat shall be insured with valid third-party liability insurance with a
minimum coverage of $100,000 per event or the equivalent.

Please pay particular attention to these EYC Ground Rules
1. Under no circumstances are pets of ANY kind allowed on yacht club grounds, even if they
are left in a vehicle or other enclosure. If you would like to bring your pet, camping is available at
Lane County’s Richardson Park, immediately northwest of the EYC grounds. As of 2010, Park
rates are $20 per night, plus $6.50 for each additional vehicle. Some electrical/water hookups and
pay showers are available. A reservation fee applies. Call Lane County Parks at 541-682-2000 for
information and reservations. Reserve online at http://ecomm.lanecounty.org/parks.
2. Please observe the ground signs and instructions for camping, swimming and parking of boats,
cars and recreational vehicles. If you arrive late (after 10:00 pm on Friday), please park and camp
in the area just to the right inside of the EYC gate. Please keep cars off the grassy areas (they
are soft and we have a delicate underground irrigation system) by using the available trailer
dollies to move boats.
3. Alcoholic beverages may be consumed discreetly and in moderation on Club grounds.
4. Be conscious of safety. Please watch your children when they are on EYC grounds, even though
they may be in the designated swimming area. Please don’t run, jump, or fish on or from the
docks. Small children must wear life jackets at all times while on the docks or near the
water. Child safety while on EYC grounds is a parent’s responsibility.
5. For those who plan to bring an RV: Eugene Yacht Club, at the insistence of the County Fire
Marshall, can no long permit electrical cords, hoses and water pipes to cross vehicle traffic areas.
Very few Club RV parking spaces are equipped with power hookups. Most RV campers using EYC
grounds will therefore need to be fully self-contained.
