Theatre 4-7
And so we kick-off our 30th anniversary year with an Autumn season
jam-packed with 100 events and films culminating in our 2012
Christmas show Peter Pan! To think Trinity Theatre exists purely due
to the hard work and determination of a small group of volunteers
3 decades ago, who saved the building from inevitable demolition
and created a community arts venue with a yearly programme of 22
shows. Since then we’ve gone from strength to strength, with 2100
hours of volunteer support and a programme of 437 events in the
past year, plus a completely new digital cinema and sound system.

Dust off your dictionaries and prepare yourselves for the spelling challenge of a lifetime in William Finn’s hilarious Tony Award-winning musical. This
riotous musical comedy is guaranteed to have you ‘cachinnating’ (use it in a sentence, request a definition?). Six young people in the throes of
puberty, overseen by grown-ups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves, learn that winning isn’t everything, and that losing doesn’t
necessarily make you a loser.
This fast-paced musical is directed by John Martin with West End Musical director Tom Carradine. Showcasing a cast of some of the finest musical
theatre performers accompanied by a five-piece band, Spelling Bee promises to be a truly enjoyable way to start our season! Each show is different
as four audience members will be invited to participate in the Bee - You perhaps?

A Woman Of No Importance
By Alan Bennett
Theatre Maketa
Tue 18 Sep 1pm & Wed 19 Sep 1pm | 3pm
Leda Hodgson returns to Trinity with another performance from Alan Bennett’s Talking Heads series.
This will be her third performance of one of these famous plays, having previously presented A
Bed Among The Lentils and A Lady Of Letters. A Woman Of No Importance is a witty and poignant
monologue, distinguished by Alan Bennett’s characteristically simple yet incisive eye for detail and
sensitivity to character. Struck down by sudden illness, Peggy Schofield is an ordinary woman, with an
ordinary life and an ordinary job - but she is far from unimportant.
This production is in aid of Trinity and all box office receipts will be donated to the theatre.

fatherly asset she inherits... The family reunite for Robert’s funeral, and unwittingly embark upon a
discomforting journey of discovery and nostalgia; straight into the inscrutable equations of the mind
and heart.
This heart-breaking, paradigm-shifting work, by American playwright David Auburn, takes on the themes
of mental health, gender bias, and the incorruptible bond between father and daughter. Showcasing a

For Dombey, money and the power it brings are the only gods worth worshipping. But can money
really buy him everything he dreams of? What of love, or life itself? This is a tale of pride and passion,

characteristic humour, indignation and pathos. In this sparkling new adaptation Red Dog brings a
rogues’ gallery of unforgettable characters vividly and imaginatively to life, to delight, outrage and

Arcadia
By Tom Stoppard
Trinity Theatre Club
Tue 23 - Sat 27 Oct 8pm | 3pm matinee Sat
Arcadia won both the Olivier and Evening Standard
Awards for Best Play when it opened at the National
Theatre in 1993, and the New York Drama Critics’
Circle Award in 1995. After its Broadway debut,
Vincent Canby wrote in the New York Times, “There’s
no doubt about it. Arcadia is Tom Stoppard’s richest,
most ravishing comedy to date, a play of wit, intellect,
language, brio, and, new for him, emotion.” Many critics regard Arcadia as Tom Stoppard’s finest play.
Arcadia is certainly a play of ideas, but it is also a
poignant love story. As the action shifts between
the present and the early 19th Century, the play addresses major questions of art and science, and how
they intersect.
Arcadia has been variously described as scintillating comedy, as superb drama, and as a theatrical
grenade. Come and decide for yourself.

Monsieur Lazhar
Tue 4 Sep 11am | 2pm | 8pm
12A | 94mins | French | Philippe Falardeau
This sweet, soulful drama, in which an Algerian refugee plays ramshackle Mary Poppins to
the kids at a Montreal primary, plays out to the scrape of desks and the echo of voices, and
showcases a glorious performance from Mohamed Fellag as the substitute teacher who is not
quite what he claims. A deserved Oscar nominee.
Faust
Wed 5 Sep 7.30pm
15 | 139mins | German | Alexander Sokurov
A thoroughly deserving winner of the Golden Lion at Venice, Alexander Sokurov’s riff on
Goethe’s tragedy is a memorable adaptation of the diabolical classic. The basic story holds
firm, with the ambitious prof (Johannes Zeiler) signing his soul off to Satan, here played as a
money-lending gargoyle (Anton Adasinsky). Irresistible stuff.
Sing Your Song
Sun 9 Sep 5pm
12A | 104mins | Susanne Rostock
There’s so much more to Harry Belafonte, singer, actor and American Civil Rights champion,
than the Banana Boat Song, as this fitting celebration of a mighty talent reveals. It’s an
inspiring watch, full of fascinating archive footage and thought-provoking recollections; it’s
easy on both ear and eye, too, the young Belafonte being quite the dreamboat.
The Raid (Serbuan Maut)
18 | 100mins | Indonesian | Gareth Huw Evans
Sun 9 Sep 8pm
An Indonesian SWAT team becomes trapped in a tenement run by a ruthless mobster and his
army of killers and thugs. This is a skull-splinteringly violent, uncompromisingly intense and
simply brilliant martial arts action movie in a nightmarish and claustrophobic setting. A superb
cinematic spectacle and the best action movie of 2012.
The Angels’ Share
Tue 11 Sep 11am | 2pm | 8pm
15 | 101mins | Ken Loach
Loach’s feel-good new movie is a crime caper set on the west coast of Scotland, complex on
the palate but with a lasting toasty finish, and framed by one of his trademark social realist,
working-class narratives. This thoroughly enjoyable yarn about whisky-tasting and Highland
heists was garlanded with the Cannes Jury Prize.
She Monkeys (Apflickorna)
Wed 12 Sep 8pm
12A | 83mins | Swedish | Lisa Aschan
Emma is a self-contained teenager who’s just joined the local pony club and found an admirer
in killer-blonde Cassandra. Emma’s sister Sara is a seven-year-old in love with the teenage
cousin who babysits her. No wonder their widowed dad keeps out of things. A tense,
intriguing, sometimes comic, subversion of the coming-of-age drama.
Free Men (Les Hommes Libres)
Sun 16 Sep 5pm
12A | 99mins | French | Ismael Ferroukhi
Occupied Paris, 1942. Low-level black marketeer Younes (Tahar Rahim) just wants to avoid
attracting Nazi attention. Gradually, though, encounters with an Arab resistance member, an
Algerian Jew and the head of the mosque (Michael Lonsdale) brings out a new side to him.
Before long he’s joining the struggle. A morally-complex, gripping Resistance drama.

As a way of avoiding the toll kids can take on romance, two best friends decide to have a

acerbic wit, insight aplenty and an all-star cast.

business fortunes go up in smoke. Featuring Juliette Binoche and Paul Giamatti.

engaging and at times deeply moving, won the Jury Prize at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival.

says nothing. Ben tickles Penguin; he pulls his funniest face; he puts on a happy hat, sings a silly song
and does a dizzy dance. Penguin says nothing…
so… Ben fires Penguin into OUTER SPACE, Penguin
comes back to earth without a word! It isn’t until a
passing lion intervenes that Penguin finally speaks...
and when he does, Ben discovers something that
was really worth the wait.
Penguin is exiting, surreal and full of surprises.
The lively songs by Tom Gray of Gomez will have
everyone joining in - and you can meet the puppets
afterwards!

The Reluctant Dragon
Backhand Theatre
Sun 4 Nov 2.30pm
Based on the book by Kenneth Graeme, Backhand Theatre brings to life the classic tale of the boy who
befriends a dragon who is not your average fire-breathing monster. The terrifying reptile he expects to
meet is instead a charming, artistic lizard who has a love of amateur dramatics. He reads poetry, gives
his best Hamlet for all to see, and certainly makes a lovely afternoon tea. The boy and the dragon have
many adventures until, one day, Sir George the Dragon Killer comes to town. With some quick thinking
from the boy, Sir George and the dragon are convinced to stage the most wonderful dragon slaying
ever seen! Can the dragon learn to breathe fire in time? Will the Village fall for this trick? This wonderful
tale, told with beautiful hand-crafted puppets and a fresh new score, is fun for all the family.

Pinocchio
Image Musical Theatre
Sun 18 Nov 2.30pm
With wonderful songs, great costumes and an
ingenious set the show gives us Pinocchio’s
journey from being a naughty, disobedient
puppet to the realisation of the need to care
for others and to get the ultimate reward of
becoming a ‘real live boy’.
Full of fascinating larger-than-life characters
who draw the little puppet into all sorts of risky
adventures; this show will enthral and entertain
the whole family. Some young audience
members will be invited to take part as actors
and we encourage the whole audience to sing
along with the chorus songs! This is family
theatre at its very best.

Baba Yaga
Krazy Kat
Sun 25 Nov 2.30pm
Baba Yaga is a witch. Yes, she is deaf. And yes, she does have bony legs… She lives in deepest Russia
in a house on chickens legs and rides the night skies in her mortar, using the pestle as a rudder and
sweeping away any tracks behind her with her broom. And her house has…chicken legs! But when a
passing Princess needs help, and a local yokel proves less than resourceful, the story tumbles into a
rabble rousing riot of colour, magic and middle European intrigue. And what’s
all this about a mysterious chant “Turn your back to the forest, and your front to me?”

Seed Pod
Frances Bristow’s sculpture reflects her love of the textures and shapes of the natural world.
She aims for simplicity in presentation creating tactile surfaces that entice the viewer to touch
and experience each piece. Seed Pod represents the birth of new ideas, how can sheet metal
become curved and soft, what story exists in this piece of stone? You are invited to experience
her work and find out.
