Art Spectacular at the Carillon Music in the Park
Special Events
Up to 50 artists from across the US will exhibit their work during
this juried fine art show in Washington Park. Event includes
musicians and food vendors. Volunteers and sponsors contact

Bike and Hike Days
The Springfield Park District is once again hosting the always
popular Bike and Hike Days at Washington Park. This
program is designed to foster biking, hiking, walking and
running within the park. Please note the park will be
barricaded to prevent vehicular traffic. Bike and hike days
will take place every Sunday through Sept. FREE. All ages.
September 6 - 27 SUNDAY 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
There will be no Bike & Hike on Sunday, Sept. 13
Touch a Truck
NEW LOCATION
Ever wanted to see how a Fire Truck operates, how a Helicopter
lands, or how a Tractor works? Now is your chance! Come to
Lincoln Park for the Springfield Park District's annual Touch a
Truck. We will have vehicles of all shapes and sizes for kids to see.

Thursday, September 24 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m.
Music in the Park is a fun family-oriented series of musical events
that are held at various parks throughout the community. The
Park District hires a professional sound production company and
books favorite local bands to perform live and on stage. These
events are completely free. Visitors are encouraged to bring a
lawn chair or blanket. FREE.

Movie in the Park
Movie in the Park is a fun family-oriented series of FREE
family friendly movies that are held at various parks
throughout the community. The Park District hires a
professional sound production company to erect a 20ft
inflatable screen and show your favorite movies in the park!
These events are completely free. Visitors are encouraged to
bring a lawn chair or blanket. FREE.

We will show the NEW Cinderella!
Leaf Identification Hike Carve for the Carillon
Does your child have a leaf collection project for school this year? Help
get that homework done in this fun educational way with our leaf
identification hike. We will be collecting over 50 leaves. Please bring a
spiral notebook and pencil. Dress for the outdoors. Pre-registration &
parent/adult chaperones are required. All ages. Fees: $5 per student
Bring your family and join the Springfield Park District to
carve thousands of pumpkins to be displayed at the Jack-oLantern Spectacular. We will supply the pumpkins and some
carving tools. Please bring any special carving tools you may
require. Carve as many pumpkins as you wish. WHILE
SUPPLIES LAST! All ages. FREE.

Carlo van Ulft, the Park District’s new Carillonneur plays a wide
variety of classical, folk and popular music year-round. Enjoy the
beauty of Washington Park and the adjacent Botanical Garden
with the unique accompaniment of carillon music. Come early
before the concert and participate in a Carillon Tower Tour. Ph:

The Conservatory will be filled with poinsettias amongst the
tropical collection. Poinsettias, tropical plants, and
evergreens will overflow the Exhibit Hall for a stunning

Workshops
Returning to the Garden by popular demand are the
evergreen wreath-making workshops! Come and construct
your very own evergreen wreath. Greens with frame and
wire included. Bring your own pruning sheers & decorations.

Plan to be at the Henson Robinson Zoo this holiday season to
take the walking tour and behold the splendor of hundreds
of colorful twinkling lights as you stroll through the
pathways around the Zoo. There will be fun crafts in our
education room for the children. Children will love the zany
3D glasses (for purchase) that make the view of the colorful
lights come to life with reindeer and candy cane shapes!
There are three different weekends and dates to take
advantage of this wonderful holiday tradition.

Special Events
Come on out and safe trick-or-treat the “streets” at
Southwind Park! WNNS, WMAY, WQLZ and Alice want to
help give kids a safe place to have a fun fall party and enjoy
Halloween at Trick-or-Treat Street. This is the 4th Annual
event and there will be tons of activities, games and crafts
for families to participate in.

Holiday Lights at the Zoo
Santa House
The Springfield Tradition continues in 2015 when Santa will
arrive at his home away from the North Pole at Robin
Roberts Stadium. Santa will take visitors starting December
6th until he has to go back to the North Pole on December
21st for final preparations for his journey around the world!

This is a practice written, run and organized by participating
master swimmers. The participants can attempt to complete
workouts assigned by the Aquatics Director and or participants.
This program is offered for advanced swimmers.

Diving Lessons
The Springfield Park District is pleased to announce a new Diving
program at Eisenhower Pool. The program will provide the youth
of Springfield & Sangamon County an opportunity to learn and
perfect the sport of one-meter springboard diving. Our new
instructor Elisha Herr will be coaching all levels of participants;
from Beginner to Competitive*. With her eyes on the future,
Elisha has begun the process of registering this program/team
with USA Diving. Instruction will be offered on Tuesday &
Wednesday evenings and Sunday afternoons for 1 hr and 15
minutes Ages 6 - 21

Parent/Tot Swim Lessons
This is an introductory class that emphasizes the involvement of
parents helping their child become more comfortable in and
around water. The classes are led by a trained instructor and are
designed to help parents teach their child how to swim. The
student to teacher ratio is 5:1. Ages 2-4 Fees: $44 / NR: $49

Group Swim Lessons
In this program participants begin learning fundamental
swimming skills, and ultimately, how to swim by themselves. On
the first day of class, participants are placed in the most
appropriate of five levels. Classes are progressive, and each level
has a specific set of skills to achieve before moving to the next. All
classes are taught by trained staff with a student to teacher ratio
of 5:1. Ages 5 & up

Semi-Private Swim Lessons
Individuals participating in this program are evaluated based on

The prerequisite for this class is Rhumba I (1) skills. This "dance of

or without a Latin beat. Everyone loves smooth and sensual

The prerequisite for this class is the basics of West Coast Swing.

Nite Club 2-Step
There are no prerequisites for this class. Great dance for any social

East Coast Swing (Triple-Step)
There are no prerequisites for this class. Triple Step Swing was
designed to be danced to medium-tempo swing music. It
complements your Single Step Swing (Jitterbug) and can be
danced in conjunction with other swings or own its own. This
dance is not only fun but will soon be a favorite.

Foxtrot & Waltz II (2)
The prerequisite for this class is Foxtrot & Waltz I. Continue your

Girls on the Run
Girls on the Run is a character development
program for girls in 3rd through 5th grade.
The program combines life skill lessons with
training for a 5k run in a creative,
interactive and incredibly FUN way! The

friendships and having fun while being

Lower House Hockey League
This is a 6 class program, co-sponsored the Springfield Park
District and the Springfield Figure Skating Club. We teach a
step by step progression of skills which develops the
student's techniques in an enjoyable group atmosphere.
Students must receive a passing grade within their skill level

Angel of Hope Candlelight
Remembrance Ceremony
Founded in August of 2007, the Angel of Hope
Statue was placed on the Garden grounds to
provide families with a place to honor and
remember children they've lost. Each year the
public is invited to attend this candlelight
ceremony on December 6th at 7 p.m. Similar
ceremonies are held at other angel statues
across the country at this time. Located at The Angel
of Hope Statue on The Washington Park Botanical

What is
Special Olympics
Special
Olympics?
Special Olympics is a way to promote fun, sportsmanship,
friendship, independence and good health for the
special needs population. Along with the Springfield
Park District, Special Olympics Illinois is offering yearround programs with a wide range of sports for athletes
to choose from. With instruction in beginning skills to
world-wide competition, athletes from ages 8 to 99 are
invited to explore this program.
Registration
Registration and medical physicals are required. These
may be acquired through Annette Reese. For any
questions or concerns please contact Annette at 585-2941
(office) or 306-6122 (cell). Practice times and locations will
be given to each individual participant upon completion of
all forms. Please register two weeks prior to the start
of each program. Mail all completed forms to 4965 S.
2nd Street, Springfield, IL 62703.
Basketball
One of Americas favorite sports and a great way to get
exercise. Running from October until March, join our Special
Olympics team. All participants are asked to register
before the first practice. Contact for more info.

You do not need any experience in snowshoeing.

LEISURE
EDUCATION
AND ADAPTIVE
PROGRAMMING
is a program of adaptive recreation for individuals with disabilities
offered through the Springfield Park District. L.E.A.P. programs are
for individuals from pre-school through adult. Special populations
we serve include but are not limited to: learning disabilities,
physically impaired, behavior problems, visually impaired, multiple
disabilities, or those with any other special needs. All attempts are
made to place participants in programs according to their disability,
age and peer group. All L.E.A.P. programs require a minimum of
2 participants and have a maximum of 12 participants unless
noted otherwise. All participants must register one week in
advance!
ADA The Springfield Park District advocates for full participation
under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Every attempt at
reasonable accommodation will be made so that individuals may
participate in a desired program.
REGISTRATION Please use the Springfield Park District registration
form. All registration forms need to be turned in before the
first day of the program or you may not be able to
participate, due to the class being full or canceled. Registration
forms can be found on our website at www.springfieldparks.org.

After School Recreation – PowerPlay! Beyond School
We will be offering an afterschool program for individuals with
disabilities which is open to siblings as well. There will be two
locations that serve different school districts and this program will
focus on fitness, nutrition and health. We will provide a snack,
recreational activities as well as time to do homework. This program
is open to ages 5 and up and costs $50 a week. For more

Springfield Park
District would better meet the needs of your child, follow these steps for inclusion:
1. Register for the program of choice and check the box on the registration form that states, “I need a modification
because of a disability to enjoy this programming.” At least two weeks in advance.
2. Contact Annette Reese at (217) 585-2941 or annette@springfieldparks.org.
3. Through meeting(s), observation, etc., it will be determined if inclusion in a chosen program would be appropriate and
beneficial, and if an inclusion aide is needed.
4. For any inclusion needs that cannot be met, the park district will issue a full refund.

Illinois Senior Olympics
The Illinois Senior Olympics based in Springfield began in
1977, making it the oldest State Games in the United States.
Springfield's first Senior Olympics hosted 122 athletes. Today,
the Illinois games hosts up to 1,400 male and female athletes
with an age range of 50 years and better. The Illinois Senior
Olympics include more than 20 events and 3 team sports.
Springfield is the only qualifying site in Illinois for athletes
that would like to participate in the National Senior Games.
The Illinois Senior Olympics is proud to promote healthy
lifestyles for seniors. The games are an excellent way for
seniors to be fit and active and improve their physical and
mental condition. This is a great opportunity to socialize
with other athletes, enjoy some friendly competition and
engage the entire family in health and wellness.
The 2015 Illinois Senior Olympics are right around the
corner. Please see below for our schedule of events. The
Illinois Senior Olympics would not be possible without great
volunteers. We have several volunteer opportunities for
sports enthusiasts of all ages.
It's not too late to get in the game. Many of the
Illinois Senior Olympics events are planned for the last
two weeks of September (9/19-9/29). Remaining events
include pickleball, bowling, track & field, horseshoes,
softball, swimming, basketball, and so much more. Anyone
ages 50 and better are welcome to join the fun. We are
anticipating a record breaking 1,500 athletes in 2015.
Registration already in progress and the deadline to
apply is September 11, 2015. The cost to join our games is
$45 and allows the participant to enter 6 events (additional

Volunteer Opportunities
Illinois Senior Olympics would not be possible
without dedicated volunteers. Volunteer
opportunities are available for all ages. Welcome
athletes from across the country to Central Illinois
by helping at athlete registration, which will be
located at Senior Services in Springfield. Get in the

timing, and medaling.

Early Childhood
The Funshop program offers a unique education based
environment where parents and children can engage in
interactive play. Most of the program is devoted to self
directed play however, each class also features small-group
activities designed to develop social and language skills. At
least one parent, relative, or caregiver must accompany each
child to every class. Parent Orientations are scheduled for Aug.

classroom, we will learn about animals and their ecosystems,
and on zoo grounds, we will present enrichment items to
enhance those animals' lives and stimulate new behaviors.

Youth Tennis Clinic
Three different clinics are offered at each time:
beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Beginners will
be introduced to the sport and the basic tennis strokes
through drills and repetition. The beginners class
includes an introduction to tennis ethics.
Intermediates will experience drills on basic strokes
and foot work and low level conditioning. The
intermediate clinic also includes Score Keeping and
ball rallies between students. The advanced clinics
are designed to continue the development of basic
strokes and also offers an introduction to game
strategies, conditioning and game playing,
introduction to rules and regulations of the sport,
and tennis protocol for competition. No prior
registration required. Call for details. Ages 7-18

Manny's Tennis Drills
Open to all ages, all sexes and all levels through repetition the

Park District Waiver
A Waiver and Release of All Claims form must be signed when
registering yourself or your minor child for Springfield Park District programs and/or memberships. Registration waivers
are available at all Park District facilities or online at www.springfieldparks.org.
Photo Disclaimer Registrants and participants of programs and special events permit the Springfield Park District
to take photos and videos of themselves and their children for publication in the program catalog, website and
additional uses as the Springfield Park District deems necessary.
Residency Policy
The Springfield Park District is committed to serving the residents of the Springfield Park
District. A resident is defined as anyone living within the boundaries of the Springfield Park District. Residents support
the Springfield Park District facilities and programs through property taxes and therefore receive preferred rates for
many of the services provided by the Springfield Park District. To determine if you are Springfield Park District resident

Smoking Policy
All Park District indoor facilities, including spectator/viewing areas are designated as nonsmoking areas. Thank you for your cooperation.
Warning of Risk Recreational activities/programs are intended to challenge and engage the physical, mental, and
emotional resources of each participant. Despite careful and proper preparation, instruction, medical advice,
conditioning and equipment, there is still a risk of serious injury when participating in any recreational activity/program.
Understandably, not all hazards and dangers can be foreseen. Depending on the particular activity, participants must
understand that certain risks, dangers, and injuries due to inclement weather, slipping, falling, poor skill level or
conditioning, carelessness, horseplay, unsportsmanlike conduct, premises defects, inadequate or defective equipment,
inadequate supervision, instruction or officiating, and all other circumstances inherent to indoor and outdoor
recreational activities/programs exist. In this regard, it must be
recognized that it is impossible for the Springfield Park District to guarantee absolute safety.
Facilities Policy
All facilities participants are expected to follow the rules of the facilities. Specialty areas of the
facilities have posted signs stating special rules specific to that area. Disregard or abuse of facility rules may result in
removal by staff or police from the facility for a designated length of time or permanently.
Inclusion Policy The Springfield Park District welcomes participants with all abilities. To learn more about how

Vandalism Alert The Springfield Park District has experienced vandalism within several of its parks and buildings. We
need your eyes and your help to stop these criminal acts. If you witness the act of vandalism please call the police
immediately and report it by calling 911. If you notice graffiti and property damage in the parks or district buildings please
call the Springfield Park District Police at 698-6030. You may also make a report on the comment area on the website at
www.springfieldparks.org. Any assistance from our residents would be greatly appreciated in reporting and putting an end
to these crimes. The Springfield Park District will prosecute these senseless acts to the full extent of the law.
Concealed Carry Firearms are not allowed in Park District facilities or on Park District properties.

The Springfield Parks Foundation was formed
in 1991 as a not-for-profit volunteer
organization. The foundation’s mission is to
enhance the use, growth and preservation of
our parks.
With the addition of Southwind Park, the
Springfield Park District includes nearly 40
neighborhood, recreational and regional
parks. The Foundation works closely with the
Springfield Park District, city, state and local
agencies, individuals and the business
community to provide support and funding
for a variety of park projects including
restoration, environment and landscape
improvements, recreation and entertainment
opportunities and commemoration.

Park Closing Policy All Park District parks will close at 10:30 p.m. This does not include the parks of Riverside,
Carpenter or Gurgens Park that open at dawn and close at dusk. This also has no effect on the bike/pedestrian trails
(Interurban, Wabash, Lost Bridge and Bunn to Lost Bridge) owned and or maintained by the Park District.
