We are ever more confident that lung cancer’s mortality can be cut in half by 2020 through our multi-tiered coordinated plan of action that includes integrating lung cancer screening into public health benefit, increasing federal and state research funding, launching a national awareness campaign that tackles stigma head-on, and expanding our live and professionally staffed patient support, information and referral services to meet the growing needs and expectations of those we are here to assist. First, in June, we launched a multifaceted, bold, and provocative national awareness campaign called “No One Deserves to Die.” It took direct aim at the biggest obstacle preventing any progress in lung cancer survival—the stigma and blame associated with the disease. This campaign launched in 31 markets, including Boston, New York City, Washington, DC , Atlanta, Dallas, Chicago and San Francisco. It appeared in movie theaters, bus shelters, metro and subway stations, online, on buildings, in print and as guerilla postings. It is expected to generate over 281 million impressions. Our objective is to break down this barrier and open the door to a more constructive public discussion on how to reduce lung cancer’s mortality rate— once and for all. “No One Deserves to Die from Lung Cancer”. This campaign not only changes the conversation but it also was the first initiative using our new brand and logo. To see the campaign in full go to: www.noonedeservestodie.org. Second, with the recent scientific validation that screening those at high risk with low-dose CT scans can save tens of thousands of lives a year and at lower cost for each life saved than other cancer screening methods, we have moved swiftly to translate the science into public health benefit. In February, we released the first of its kind National Framework for Lung Screening Excellence and Continuum of Care, to ensure that lung cancer screening is carried out safely, responsibly and cost effectively for those at risk. The National Framework spells out what consumers at risk have a right to know about this life-saving benefit, what they should expect from a medical center offering lung cancer screening, what constitutes best practices in care and where to go to have screening done safely and responsibly within the continuum of care. The National Framework also LAURIE FENTON AMBROSE commits to a quality improvement process to ensure that data and specimens are collected and analyzed and as advancements are realized, incorporated back into the continuum of care. I am proud to share that to date over 120 medical centers across the country have adopted the National Framework and have established lung cancer screening programs within their continuum of care following these standards and guidelines. And more are coming on line every day. We applaud these doctors and medical centers for acting swiftly, for adopting the National Framework which minimizes risk and harm and for showing that life-saving benefits can be realized NOW! Go to www.screenforlungcancer.org to get information or find a site near you. CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE 1 In addition to the life-saving benefits, we proudly acknowledge the groundbreaking cost-benefit analysis, conducted by the highly respected actuarial firm, Milliman Inc., which published its study in Health Affairs, a peer reviewed national public health and policy journal. The results of the study demonstrate that CT screening, including all repeat scans, tests and biopsies needed for a definitive diagnosis, can be done in the commercial market at lower cost per member per month than other cancer screening. Over 70,000 lives a year could be saved with a cost per life saved of $18,862 ($15,177 if a less invasive video-assisted surgery is utilized). This comparison is significantly less than the cost per life saved for mammography screening at $51,274, for colonoscopy screening at $28,958 and for cervical cancer screening at $75,181. We are working again with Milliman, Inc. on an additional costbenefit analysis which will consider the quality of life years saved. It is expected to be published early fall 2012. We are delivering this information to the highest levels of our public health and policy leadership to underscore that program implementation can be done and at low cost. I am also excited to share that federal research funding as well as a national plan of action for all aspects of lung cancer continues to grow in dollars and support. The Lung Cancer Mortality Reduction Act of 2011 2 “ I WA N TE D TO CO M E U P W I TH A WAY TO O F F E R A L L O F TH E P E O P L E TO U C H E D BY LU N G C A N C E R A S I M P L E A N D E F F E C TI V E WAY O F HONO R I N G LOV E D O N E S A N D G E TTI N G I N VO LV E D I N TH E LU N G C A N C E R M OV E M E N T. We have also secured an additional $10.5 million specifically for lung cancer research in the FY2013 Department of Defense Lung Cancer Research Pipeline. We established this dedicated pipeline in 2008 and have secured $70 million in federal research funding to date. We are also utilizing our public health policy work and signature national awareness events, such as the National Shine a Light on Lung Cancer Vigil and Team Lung Love, to continue to fuel our grassroots movement and engage advocates in record numbers representing every state. In addition we have secured the support of over 50 leading interna- tional and national medical, research, health advocacy, social justice and military and veterans organizations who have joined in our call to action to make lung cancer mortality reduction a public health priority. We have published cost-benefit analysis, we are linking national awareness efforts with recent breakthroughs in science and we are growing support for changes in federal health policy and grassroots mobilization. We literally work with thousands of patients, families, advocates, survivors, doctors, researchers and the like—all across the country. We are proud of our ability to maintain top notch live, professionally staffed support, information and referral services for the tens of thousands of stakeholders who contact us every year. We are confident that together, we can bring about the greatest lifesaving and cancer mortality reducing effort ever by 2020.
