PANTOMIMES 1975 onwards 1975 : Dick Whittington December 24th 1975 - January 10th 1976 (42 performances) Andrew Betts (Dick Whittington) Michael Heath (Alderman Fitzwarren/Sultan of Morocco) Dennis Leeman (Sea Captain) Mark Leeman (Martha the Cook) Francesca Lucy (Fairy Bowbells/Princess Almeida) Robert Quarry (Town Crier/Slave Hassan) Cheryl van Hoorn (Alice Fitzwarren) Michael Watkins (King Rat) Mak Wilson (Tommy the Cat) The Alma Rippon Dancers Musical Director: Ted Heath Musicians: Derek Lawrence, Tony Wyatt Choreographer: Francesca Lucy/Alma Rippon Lighting by Pat Nelder Stage Manager: Anthony Hibberd Assistant Stage Manager: Nick Richards Written & Directed by Vivyan Ellacott This was the first professional pantomime to be staged in Ilford since 1945. At the Ilford Hippodrome during the evening performance of the pantomime “Robinson Crusoe” on January 12th 1945, shortly after the start of the show, the star, Renee Houston, had just launched into her opening number—”The Fleet’s In”. Suddenly the entire building juddered in the shock waves of an enormous explosion. A V2 rocket had fallen on a row of cottages behind the theatre, killing 15 people. The blast demolished the dressing rooms and brought much of the backstage area crashing down. After a momentary pause, the stage manager rushed onstage ordering the audience to evacuate the building, and despite swirling dust and sprinklers soaking the pit area, the conductor led the orchestra into its exit music, aiding a shocked, but nonpanicking audience evacuation. Miraculously only one person in the theatre was killed, though over a hundred were injured. The whole night was spent digging performers and staff out of the rubble. Two days later the ceiling of the Hippodrome collapsed on top of the stalls. The building was sealed off, and finally demolished twelve years later when some crumbling masonry fell on the top of a passing bus. The newly opened Kenneth More Theatre, thirty years later, renewed the tradition of an annual professional pantomime in Ilford. Not having any recent experience to use as a basis, it was decided to run for just three weeks. This “Dick Whittington” was a complete 100% sell-out. 1976 : Mother Goose December 23rd 1976 - January 22nd 1977 (46 performances) Terri Gardener (Mother Goose) Gareth Armstrong (Prince of Darkness) Gilly Daniels (Gretchen) Nigel Ellacott (Priscilla the Goose/ Gaston) Michael Heath (Squire/ King of Birdland) Jonathan Kiley (Colin) Ludmila Nova (Queen of Birdland) Robert Quarry (Idle Jack) Eleanor Thomas (Jill) Anna Lou & Maria (Speciality) The Alma Rippon Dancers Musical Director: Ted Heath Choreographer: Ludmila Nova/ Alma Rippon Lighting: Pat Nelder Stage Manager: Anthony Hibberd Assistant Stage Manager: Nick Richards Written & Directed by Vivyan Ellacott Based on the success of the previous year, it was decided to run the pantomime for an extra week. The KMT had no costume or scenery stock of its own, so the entire physical production scenery for this panto (and for the following year’s “Sleeping Beauty” ) were bought from Cyril Fletcher. This provided the basis of what would eventually become a very large stock of the theatre’s own pantomime scenery and costumes. 1977: Sleeping Beauty December 22nd 1977 - February 4th 1978 (55 performances) Freddie Lees (Dame Trott) Graham Richards (Billy Trott) Andrew Betts (Prince Florizel) Vivienne Moore (Princess Aurora) Peter Dayson (Storyteller/Pongo) Tracy Hart (Fairy Queen) Lesley Heath (Lucinda) Paul Jaynes (Carabosse) Eric Leroy (King Eric) Robert Quarry (Scullion) Terence Suffolk (Captain) Eleanor Thomas (Queen) The Alma Rippon Dancers Musical Director: Ted Heath Percussion: Terry Wyatt Choreographer: Terry Lee Drake/Alma Rippon Lighting by Pat Nelder Stage Manager: Tony Hibberd Assistant Stage Manager: Colin Dean Written & Directed by Vivyan Ellacott For its third year, the pantomime run had been extended to six and a half weeks, and, with the brilliant Freddie Lees as Dame, was an outstanding success. KMT pantomimes were now firmly established as part of the town’s Christmas festivities. 1978: Aladdin December 16th 1978 - January 27th 1979 (57 performances) Roy Kean (Widow Twankey) Kenneth Barrow (Abanazar) Adam Daye (Wishee Washee) Helen Sparks (Princess Balroubadour) Robert Quarry (P.C. Following their KMT debut they would go on to play the next 27 years as a double-act, in the course of which they became acknowledged as the best Ugly Sisters in the business, playing opposite major star-names and in most of the major UK theatres. This much acclaimed partnership sadly ended with the sudden and early death of Peter Robbins in 2009. 1982: Dick Whittington: Dec 17th 1982 - Jan 29th 1983 (58 performances) Desmond Barritt (Sarah the Cook) Timothy Robert (Dick Whittington) Frank Seton (Alderman Fitzwarren) Robert Quarry (Captain’s Mate) Michael Bray (Captain) Maggie Carr (Alice Fitzwarren) Sue Dacre (Sultana of Morocco) Shealagh Dennis (Fairy Bowbells) Andrew Fettes (Tommy the Cat) Steve Edwin (King Rat) Joseph Young (Hassan) Stephen Alvey (Gorilla) Robert Adam, Jane Barrett, Pauline Hannah, Loraine Porter Musical Director: Laurence Payne Percussion: Dave Hawthorn Choreographer: Shealagh Dennis Designed by Amanda Fisk Costumes by Margaret Brice & Nigel Ellacott Lighting by Andrew Stone Stage Director: Myles Cosgrove Assistant Stage Managers: Meagan Fitzgerald, Russell Nash, Denise Silvey, Simon Ward Written & Directed by Vivyan Ellacott Loraine Porter joined the cast at the very last minute, as a replacement for Ulrika Butt, who was suddenly unavailable. Loraine would thereafter become part of the permanent KMT Pantomime team, and be involved in every succeeding pantomime as choreographer, and regularly as a performer. 1983: Aladdin December 16th 1983 - January 21st 1984 (54 performances) Roy Kean (Widow Twankey) Neil West (Wishee Washee) Michael Heath (Abanazar) Robert Quarry (Grand Vizier) Loraine Porter (Princess Balroubadour) Hilary O’Neil (Aladdin) Peter Beadle (Emperor of China) Michael Clark (Genie of the Lamp) Simon Hayward (Hi-Pong) Glen McLaughlin (Ho-Ping) Liza Just (Slave of the Ring) Adelle Cohen Jennifer Powell Jane Warwick Musical Director: Laurence Payne Percussion: Dave Hawthorn Choreographer: Loraine Porter Designed by Amanda Fisk Costumes by Margaret Brice & Nigel Ellacott Wardobe Mistress: Judy Walker Lighting by Andrew Stone Stage Director: Myles Cosgrove Assistant Stage Managers: Daryl Aukland, Tony Courts, Christopher Johns, Lynn Smith Written by Nigel & Vivyan Ellacott Directed by Vivyan Ellacott Three of the performers in this pantomime had all begun their professional careers at the KMT during 1983: Peter Beadle, Simon Hayward and Michael Clark. To avoid confusion with another Equity member of the same name, Michael Clark would change his name to Michael French and go on to enjoy a highly successful career on television. This show also marked the first occasion on which Loraine Porter was responsible for the choreography—and she would continue to be the creative force behind KMT pantomime dances for very many years. 1984: Mother Goose Dec 21st 1984 - Jan 26th 1985 (48 performances) Peter Thorne (Mother Goose) Loraine Porter (Jill) Christopher Marlowe (Colin) Robert Quarry (Squirt) David Gillespie (Idle Jack) Eleanor Thomas (Fairy Queen) Eddie Caswell (Squire Littleworth) Sherry Adelaide (Priscilla the Goose) Peter Beadle (Demon King) Anna Lou (Queen of Gooseland) Glen McLaughlin (King Gander) Craig Stokes (Goosequill) Clare Bond Natalie Cole Jacqui Johns Michelle Meyer Musical Director: Laurence Payne Percussion: Alan Grant Choreographer: Loraine Porter Designed by Amanda Fisk Costumes by Margaret Brice & Nigel Ellacott Wardrobe Mistress: Charlotte Kasner Lighting & Sound by Andrew Stone Production Manager: Andrew Stone Stage Director: Anthony Courts Assistant Stage Managers: Andrew Blewitt, Nicholas Cater, Alan Hennigan Robert Persell, Judy Walker Written by Nigel Ellacott Directed by Vivyan Ellacott This was the first KMT pantomime appearance by Christopher Marlowe, who would appear more than a dozen times over the succeeding years. 1985: Snow White December 19th 1985 - January 25th 1986 (50 performances) Ken Wilson (Dame Semolina) Gareth Snook (Prince Michael) Christopher Marlowe (Muddles) Loraine Porter (Jill) Teresa Gallagher (Snow White) Isobel Hurll (Queen Brangemar) Robert Quarry (Palace Chamberlain) Andrew Ryan (Igor) Michelle Hockley Paul Howard Jacqui Johns Paul Kyle Juveniles: Group One: Megan Bertie, Amanda Coates, Mikki Fernandez, Zoe Palmer, Samantha Plumb, Bronwen Smith, Anna Welling Group Two: Treena Jones, Lee Juniper, Caroline Lockwood, Katherine Ludlow,Vicki Ludlow, Laura Mitchell, Charlotte Newbury Musical Director: Laurence Payne Percussion: Alan Grant Choreographer: Loraine Porter Costumes by Margaret Brice & Nigel Ellacott Lighting & Sound by Andrew Stone Technical Director: Andrew Stone Stage Manager: Anthony Courts Assistant Stage Managers: Andrew Ryan, Judy Walker Written by Nigel Ellacott Directed by Vivyan Ellacott This year saw the KMT debut of Isobel Hurll. It so happened that Nigel Ellacott & Peter Robbins were playing Ugly Sisters in Aberdeen—where their panto opened the first week of December and ended on Sunday January 10th. Although it was a bit of a scrabble, Nigel and Peter left Scotland Monday morning and took over in Ilford on Tuesday evening—thus enabling David Gillespie to accept his TV offer. Having to learn a new script (though it had been written by Nigel) and change shows overnight was quite a challenge—but they rose to it with aplomb! 1988:Babes in the Wood Dec 15th 1988 - Jan 28th 1989 (66 performances) Gary Webb (Nurse Glucose) Loraine Porter (Maid Marian) Lee Threadgold (Robin Hood) Robert Quarry (‘Orrible ‘Enry) Nicholas Temple (Nasty Norman) Richard Evans (Sheriff of Nottingham) Steve Eke (Mutch, the Miller’s Son) Gary Forecast (Alan a Dale) Gary Hallam (Little John) Paul Kyle (Will Scarlett) Sacha Megraw Lyndsey Edwards Katie Hazell or Ann-Marie McGrory (Jill) Katie Ballard or Sally Powell (Jack) Juveniles: Group One: Michelle Allen, Katie Harvey, Nadine Hoffman, Sarah Rouse, Joanna Tincey, Anna Welling Group Two: Mikada Fernandez, Debbie Jones, Treena Jones, Kathryn Ludlow, Natalie Marcou ,Shelley Smith Musical Director: Laurence Payne Percussion: Alan Grant & Nigel Grant Choreographer: Loraine Porter Costumes by Margaret Brice & Nigel Ellacott Scenery & Lighting Design by Andrew Stone Lighting & Sound operation: Nigel Catmur Stage Manager: Anthony Courts Assistant Stage Managers: Hilton Earl, Mark Keen, Jarrod Megraw, Stephen Michael Written by Nigel Ellacott Directed by Vivyan Ellacott On December 23rd matinee, one week into the run, Gary Webb banged his leg against the side of the bed in the Ghost Scene and suffered some bruising. He was advised by the theatre doctor to “rest his leg” and he was replaced for the evening performance by Vivyan Ellacott. Gary did not return to the show until January 3rd, leaving Vivyan to cover 16 performances. 1989: Aladdin December 21st 1989 - February 3rd 1990 (63 performances) Roy Alvis (Widow Twankey) Michael Heath (Abanazar) Loraine Porter (Aladdin) Robert Quarry (Emperor of China) Andrew Ryan (Wishee Washee) Simon Davies (Genie of the Lamp) Alison Pollard (Princess Balroubadour) Marc Court (Inspector Li-Li Law) Nadja Brown (Lotus Blossom) Luke Hope (Wun-Hung Hi) Craig Maguire (Wun Hung Lo) Jacqui Johns (So-Shi / Slave of the Ring) Heather Worrall (Jasmine Blossom) Juveniles: Jodie Harper or Joanne Dixon (A very special bear) Group One: Michelle Allen, Katie Ballard, Debbie Jones, Anne-Marie McGrory, Shelley Smith, Joannah Tincey Group Two: Katie Hazell, Katie Harvey, Nadine Hoffman, Natalie Marcou, Sally Powell, Wendy Wild Musical Director: Laurence Payne Percussion: Nigel Grant Choreographer: Loraine Porter Scenery Design: John Page & Paul Lazell Costumes by Margaret Brice & Nigel Ellacott Lighting Design : Nigel Catmur Production Manager: Andrew Stone Stage Manager: Anthony Courts Assistant Stage Managers: Nicholas Cater, Ian Halverson, Rob Mitchell-Gears, Bob Walters Written by Nigel Ellacott Directed by Vivyan Ellacott 1990:Dick Whittington Dec 20th 1990 - Feb 2nd 1991 (62 performances) Andrew Ryan (Sarah the Cook) Pauline Hannah (Dick Whittington) Peter Carr (Alderman Fitzwarren) Isobel Hurll (Queen Rat) Robert Quarry (Bosun Bilge) Gaynor Barrett (Alice Fitzwarren) Katie Warren (Tommy the Cat) Lorinda King (Fairy Bluebell/) Nadja Brown (Slave Girl) Jacqui Johns (Princess of Morocco) John Naylor (Green Sea Creature) Drew Varley (King Neptune) Ian Wenman (Slave Boy) Juveniles: Group One: Michelle Allen, Katie Ballard, Katie Harvey, Katie Hazell, Shelley Smith, Wendy Wild Group Two: Gemma Brookes, Joanne Dickson, Nadine Hoffman, Debbie Jones, Natalie Marcou, Joannah Tincey Musical Director: Laurence Payne Percussion: Nigel Grant Choreographer: Loraine Porter Scenery Design: Andrew Stone Costumes by Margaret Brice & Nigel Ellacott Lighting Design : Nigel Catmur Technical Director: Andrew Stone Production & Stage Manager: Anthony Courts Assistant Stage Managers: Jason Belne, Nicholas Cater, Ian Halverson, Rob Mitchell-Gears, Ian Wenman Wardrobe: Claire Harvey, Charlotte Newberry, Jake Annison Written by Nigel Ellacott Directed by Vivyan Ellacott This was Andrew Ryan’s first appearance in the role of Panto Dame. During this time he never missed a single one of the 2,127 panto performances he gave during these years. To have played panto 35 years running in the same theatre is a record that, as far as we know, no one else has achieved in the world of Pantomime. Robert’s 2,000th KMT pantomime appearance came during “Jack and the Beanstalk” in the year 2007. However, Robert had appeared in many other shows at the KMT as well as panto. During the run of “Cinderella (1999-2000,) Robert was given a surprise onstage party to mark his 2000th overall performance at the Kenneth More. (Peter had sadly and unexpectedly died in April this year.) It was also the farewell appearance of Robert Quarry who decided to take early retirement following this, his 35th pantomime. Robert’s 35 consecutive pantomimes in the same theatre is undoubtedly a record in the theatre world. 2010: Sleeping Beauty December 16th 2010 - January 22nd 2011 (51 performances) Christopher Marlowe (Nurse Nelly) Loraine Porter (Fairy Flora) Isobel Hurll (Maleficent) Rikki Stone (Silly Billy) Edward Thorpe (King Rudolphe) Hannah Chick (Princess Aurora) Jason Denton (Prince Michael) John Burlington (Ben) Nathan Daniel (Arthur) Jocelyn Prah (Lucy) Tami Stone (Patty) Children: Group One: Lauren Condon, Rayne Leat, Lauren Mead, Megan Parker, Sophie Smart, D’mia Walker, Group Two Natasha Black, Clio Goodwin, Coral Ironside, Summer Jones, Eloise Penfold, Amy Young Musical Director: Steven Day Percussion: Nicky Caulfield Choreographer: Loraine Porter Scenery Design: Gerry Binns & Lauren Skinner Costume Design: Nigel Ellacott Lighting & Sound Design : Peter Abery Lighting Operator: Andres Jimenez Animation Design & Editing: Jason Kew Filmed Sequences: Marc Seymour Stage Manager : Dave Palmer Production Manager: Rob Mitchell-Gears Production Assistant & Wardrobe Management: Owen Smith Stage & Technical Staff: Liam Bennett, Greg Bracken, Sophie Cooney, William Dignon, Hayley Levison, Lauren Skinner, Kate Smith Written by Nigel Ellacott Directed by Vivyan Ellacott Assistant Director: Rob Mitchell-Gears 2011: Jack and the Beanstalk Dec 12th 2011 - Jan 22nd 2012 (58 performances) Christopher Marlowe (Dame Trott) Loraine Porter (Bellatrix ) Patrick George (Jack) Libby Gore (Jill) Paul Lawrence Thomas (Silly Billy) Amelia Friswell (Fairy Sweet Pea) Shirann Donovan Shelley Payne Joseph O’Reilly Kristian Turner Children: Group One: Natasha Black, Hannah Green, Sophie Hall, Megan Parker, Sophie Smart, Amy Young Group Two Lauren Condon, Clio Goodwin, Summer Jones, Eloise Penfold, D’Mia Walker, Brooke Wolpert.
