Boston Bar Association Law Day Dinner 2013 ■ 9 CITATION OF Judicial Excellence The Honorable Jeffrey M. Winik First Justice, Boston Housing Court The Honorable Jeffrey M. Winik has served as Boston Housing Court Judge since 1995, and has held the position of First Justice since 2004. Amid concern about ensuring that unrepresented litigants have meaningful access to justice, he has dedicated himself to advancing the Housing Court Lawyer for the Day Program. Thanks to Judge Winik’s leadership, the program has expanded to provide opportunities for volunteers to try cases and to make limited appearances for both landlords and tenants. He tells Lawyer for the Day volunteers: “I guarantee you, you will come away from the experience knowing you have done something important and have helped people who would have been far worse without your assistance.” This respect and dedication to the court system has earned him the highest praise from all who enter his courtroom. Since the Lawyer for the Day Program began 14 years ago, some 12,000 volunteers have helped more than 14,500 individuals. Last year alone, 457 volunteers assisted 976 tenants and 178 landlords. Tonight, the Boston Bar Association presents a Citation of Judicial Excellence to the Honorable Jeffrey M. Winik for his leadership as First Justice of the Boston Housing Court.
