The Conestoga Wagon was invented in 1717. It was named after the Conestoga River in Pennsylvania. The horse and buggy made its way to America in 1815. First arriving in New Hampshire. It is known as a “horse and buggy” in American English and by “horse and carriage” in British English. Barnesville, was well known as the "Buggy Capital of the South" in the late 1800s and early 1900s, with several Barnesville companies producing buggies. The local Barnesville Gazette reported that Mr. Smith of the J. G. Smith and Sons Genuine Barnesville Buggies Factory anticipated "for the year 1897 he will ship at least 1,200 buggies" and "is almost sure to double this for 1898." The bicycle was introduced in 1817 in Manheim by a German man named Baron Karl von Drais. The “modern automobile” was introduced in 1886, also by a German man. His name was Carl Benz . The Ford Model T came to follow in 1908. Ford also introduced what we know as a V8 engine with their Model A in 1953. The Volkswagen was designed by Porsche as a simple car for Germany in 1938. The Chevrolet Corvette was introduced in 1953. Buggy Days Car Show: Antique Car Show See antique automobiles with their original Barnesville Buggy Days Parade equipment. Page 9 Buggy Days Chairman’s Corner As the chairman of Buggy Days, I have the privilege of organizing and planning one of the best festivals in the country! (Or so I think!) Because of an incredible group of hard working dedicated volunteers, Barnesville Buggy Days is a huge success. This year marks a special milestone in the life of our festival. 40 years ago the leaders of our town decided to organize a celebration that honors the history of Barnesville. This city was the largest buggy producer in the southeast! People from all over the country wanted a Barnesville Buggy! Since its inception, Buggy Days has grown and become an annual homecoming for everyone. While growing up in Barnesville, every September was always a special time. Buggy Days has always been an important and fun time for me. I was fortunate to ride in one of the first parades. I have caught a pig and climbed a grease pole along with being on a winning team in Almost Anything Goes. My uncle (Reuben Ware) wrote the official Buggy Days song and my grandfather (Troy Turner) used to belly dance in the parade. For those of you who grew up going to Buggy Days, you know what I’m talking about! We live in the best city in the world! And I am so blessed to be a part of celebrating Barnesville’s rich history! Buggy Days is always a time where you can renew friendship and enjoy a great week of fun! See you downtown! 678-883-0413 Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Studio 4:13 Friday, September 6, 2013 Please join us in welcoming a new Lamar County business, Studio 4:13, to our community by attending their Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on Friday, September 6th at 11:00 am. Location: 12 Zebulon Street, Barnesville, GA. Tim Turner Buggy Days Chairman President’s Corner Can you believe it? It’s Buggy Days! This festival is possibly one of the most rewarding things that I get to do with the Barnesville Chamber. To so many of us, Buggy Days is more than a festival, it is homecoming, it is a celebration, and it is a way to honor the history of this town. I remember my very first Buggy Days. It was four years ago, and it rained. At the time, I had lived in Barnesville for a little over six months and still didn’t know a soul out here. I remember walking through town during the time that the rain paused and I remember noticing how happy everyone looked. As I walked through the streets filled with busy people I noticed how I made eye contact with strangers with contagious smiles-something that I wasn’t used to, but was intrigued by, it made me feel at home. As a newcomer to Barnesville, I didn’t yet understand that Buggy Days is looked forward to by thousands of people every year. Families are reunited and friends have standing annual plans (on the third weekend in September) to reunite at So-and-So’s house where they will eat, drink and talk about the Buggy Days of the past. Of course by my second Buggy Days I had discovered the excitement and anticipation of the “holiday” through the friends that I had made. The importance of buying a new sundress for the Street Dance, significance of getting the new official t-shirt that we will all wear so proudly, where the perfect spot is on Thomaston Street to watch the parade, and where to be when the lights go out and the fireworks go up. Not necessarily insider information-just shared experiences of holding onto traditions that were passed on to them from their parents, passed to me through their friendship, and that I will pass on to my daughter as she grows older. To me, Buggy Days is a way to revere not only the buggy industry and history that made this town thrive years ago, but a way to memorialize the culture and the people of Barnesville. To celebrate the citizens that are smiling at the strangers on the street, creating an atmosphere that feels like home, and making memories that will be cherished and reminisced years from now. The citizens that just so happen to be our neighbors. Happy Buggy Days Lamar County-ans! I hope you have the ride of your life! BARNESVILLE-LAMAR COUNTY P.O.
