In addition to achieving a significantly improved retention rate of 82 percent, up 7 percent from the previous 75 percent, we made tremendous strides in moving the University toward its goal of being a great Catholic university. For one, the Cameron School of Business achieved accreditation by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). This accreditation is considered internationally as the most prestigious professional recognition an institution and its business programs can earn. A second major accomplishment was successfully moving forward our plans to reopen the School of Nursing that resulted in approval from the Texas Board of Nursing, on July 21, 2011, to offer a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACS COC) in November 2011. We began offer pre-nursing courses in the fall of 2011 and will enroll the first class of nursing students in the summer of 2012. St. Thomas is in a unique position to train future medical personnel in integrating faith with health care. Our proximity to the world’s largest medical center ensures that these students will have opportunities to be involved in cutting-edge medical advances. Donations by friends and supporters of St. Thomas provided the financial means to establish five endowed chairs in nursing, including one honoring Archbishop Joseph A. Fiorenza. A third accomplishment was the expansion of our off-campus Master of Education offerings. Now, the graduate program curriculum is taught at 14 different sites in the Greater Houston area, serving more than 900 students in the program in a variety of suburban school districts. In the academic year ending 2011, the University awarded $9.2 million in institutional aid to 1,239 students, ensuring that they will have the opportunity to pursue and complete a college education at an institution where faith, character and leadership are primary focuses. In the current year, we have increased awards to $9.7 million in institutional aid to our students. Recognizing that we cannot rest on our laurels, our Board of Directors launched a Capital Campaign, Faith in Our Future. This initiative includes the School of Nursing, a Center for Science and Health Professions, and a Performing Arts Center, as well as additional endowed chairs and programs, and endowed scholarships. St. Thomas has been richly blessed by you, our donors, who have given generously to the University. As we confront the challenges of an ever-changing world, we will continue to strengthen the core values of our founding Basilian Fathers: goodness, discipline and knowledge. With best wishes and deep appreciation, Robert Ivany PRESIDENT USTAReport2011_2_27_2012_Layout 1 2/27/12 9:45 AM Page 4 2010-2011 In Review For the 17th consecutive year, the University of St. Thomas is named to the top tier of the U.S.News & World Report’s, “America’s Best Colleges” list of universities offering master’s degrees in the Western region of the United States. Dunn, Sr., a successful Houston businessman and philanthropist, the John S. Dunn Research Foundation has supported organizations engaged in cutting-edge medical endeavors in biomedical, education and research, primarily in the Greater Houston area. Charles Hall, currently the Foundation’s vice president, is pictured left with UST President Dr. Robert Ivany. The University of St. Thomas receives a $245,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education for emergency management planning efforts. He is a testament to the strong biochemistry degree program at St. Thomas. He will, no doubt, be a leader of faith and character. Learn more about the University’s pre-health program, and view a chemistry class with Dr. Bill Tinnerman. Get the free app at http://gettag.mobi to view on your smartphone or go to stthom.edu/Chemistryvideo. gets full-tuition scholarship to medical school For James Doan, a graduate of the 2011 class, doing undergraduate research in biochemistry at the University of St. Thomas was a way to fuel his passion for science and get ahead of the curriculum. It also helped him earn a full-tuition, merit scholarship to the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Paul L. Foster School of Medicine in El Paso. Because the medical school is fairly new, Doan takes his place in the third class, which includes 80 students. St. Thomas has a high acceptance rate into medical school. Dr. Michelle Steiger, assistant professor of chemistry and physics and co-chair of the Health Professions Advisory Committee, said between 2005-2010, 71 percent of applicants from UST were accepted into medical school. Doan’s graduation from St. Thomas and acceptance into medical school continues the family legacy. His two older brothers, John and David, also attended UST, and now both are physicians. USTAReport2011_2_27_2012_Layout 1 2/27/12 9:45 AM Page 9 Nicole Casarez receives Columbia Journalism Review Laurel From 2002-2006, Nicole Casarez, attorney and University of St. Thomas professor of communication, and a group of former UST journalism students worked diligently to prove the innocence of former death row inmate Anthony Graves. Since 2006, Casarez has continued to work pro bono for Graves, along with co-council Katherine Scardino and Jimmy Phillips, Jr. The team succeeded, and Graves was set free on Oct. 27, 2010. Despite spending the last 18 years in prison for murders he did not commit, Graves continues to be driven by the same hope and determination that carried him through his darkest hours in prison. The media storm that has followed the release of Graves included an episode of 48 Hours Mystery on CBS in April 2011. Casarez also was featured in the Laurels section of the January/February 2011 issue of the Columbia Journalism Review. The Laurel was dedicated to Casarez and Texas Monthly senior editor Pamela Colloff, whose comprehensive article on Graves’ case raised public awareness and drew the attention of prosecutors. A $260,000 gift from Harriet and Joe Foster funds the Houston Community College/University of St. Thomas Foster Scholars Program, which provides full-tuition scholarships for five Houston Community College students who transfer to St. Thomas to complete their undergraduate degrees in nursing within two years. The Baxter Trust awards a $75,000 grant for the University of St. Thomas School of Nursing to train nursing preceptors who will support nursing students as they engage in clinical learning inpatient care settings. The University of St. Thomas Athletics Department accepts the invitation to become the newest member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Red River Conference. All of us at St. Thomas and in the entire community are indebted to Professor Casarez and her students for saving a precious human life from death or further incarceration. We are fortunate and proud that she continues to teach and motivate our students at St. Thomas. USTAReport2011_2_27_2012_Layout 1 2/27/12 9:45 AM Page 10 U N I V E R S I T Y O F S T.
