‘Bioscope is about Pain’
Chinmay Remane & Sharad Bodage
Pain manifests in human lives in various
ways. This is the thread that connects the
four stories in Bioscope, said Gajendra Ahire,
one of the four directors of the film. He was
present along with director Girish Mohite,
producers Neha Pendse and Abhay Shevade,
music director Salil Kulkarni and poet and
actor Sandeep Khare at the Pune International Film Festival (PIFF).
Bioscope is a collection of four short films
– Dil-e-Nadan (by Ahire), Ek Hota Kau (Mohite), Baill (Viju Mane) and Mitra (Ravi Jadhav). The films are based on poems by four
different poets.
Ahire said that this is a first-of-its-kind
attempt in Marathi cinema. He also elaborated on the different approach he used for
the film. “Short films differ completely in format than a full-length feature film. My film
focuses only on a conversation between two
individuals,” he said. Dil-e-Nadan is based on
19th century Urdu poet Mirza Galib’s poem.

It talks about a yesteryear classical singer
portrayed by Neena Kulkarni.
Mohite talked about the premise and process of the films. “We have been working on
this project for the past three years and the
basic ideology of the films is in the poems.
Each film gives you a different glimpse of
life,” he said. Mohite’s film Baill is based on
a poem by Loknath Yashwant. He went on to

A Return to their Roots
Neha Kulkarni & Shekhar Paigude
The Maharashtra Tourism Development
Corporation (MTDC) Competition has
opened up different avenues for different
people. For Jagannath Jadhav and Vanita
Jadhav, it was an opportunity to return to
their roots. Through their film Adorable Little Hamlet – Wai, the couple has attempted
to uncover a hidden tourist delight.
“Wai is known as the ‘Kashi of the South’.
It boasts of some splendid temples, but unfortunately remains off the map of popular
tourist attractions,” said Jagannath Jadhav.
He was elated after the screening of his film
on Day Five of the 13th Pune International
Film Festival (PIFF). The short film is competing in the Manmade Heritage Category
of the MTDC Competition.
Wai is home to many 18th century structures like the Mahaganpati Temple, the
ghat of River Krishna and the wada of Nana
Phadanvis. The town is in the western Maharashtra district of Satara.
Vanita Jadhav, who is also the Convenor
of Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), felt that it was
their moral responsibility to give something
back to the place they belong to. “Having
remained away from India for a while, we
longed to return to our roots and give back
to our native place,” she reflected.
This wish was realised through a chance
meeting with Bhai Dole who has worked
in the advertising industry for over two decades. He agreed to come on board as the director of the film. The responsibility of writing was taken up by Pravin Joshi. Sharing
his experience, he said, “The biggest challenge of the film was presenting 1000 years
of Wai’s history in ten minutes.” Joshi has
also written the lyrics for the film. Driven
entirely by their love for Wai, the producer
duo has also restored the broken temple and
the river ghat of Krishnna. Their next project is another 30 minute film on Wai.

Stimulating Cultural Exchange
Swastika De Sarkar &
Siddharth Sharma
Cinema reflects the culture of a country.
The Country Focus section of 13th Pune International Film Festival (PIFF) has films
from three countries - Algeria, Brazil and
Egypt. They depict peculiarities and pose
questions that differ distinctly from those of
India. Along with this, there are historical
similarities that can make the Indian audience identify with them.
“Country Focus is about spreading and widening the spectrum of cinematic work,” says
Samar Nakhate, chairman of selection committee, PIFF. “Let’s share the sense that the
people of these countries are trying to make
through films,” he said.
Antonio das Mortes
The films being shown in PIFF are made after
1990. Their topics are different; they speak
about women and their struggle,” says Mohammad Adel, Minister, Councilor.
Generalising the feministic theme, Nakhate
notes that it is important how women look at
the world. The theme continues to register its
presence in the Egyptian films. “These films
break the stereotypical image of the Egyptian
films,” says Nakhate.
Fatma N’soumer
The Algerian films that have been selected
are mostly women-centric. Works like Heroine, Fatma N’soumer pertain to this theme.
“After Algeria won independence in 1962, our
cinema focused on war and independence.
Talking broadly about Egyptian cinema,
Nakhate explained that the films differ in
their outlook. “Most people think about others with a biased mindset. Egyptian films
show us how people there look at their own
lives in a detached way,” he says.
Reacting after watching Rags and Tatters,
an Egyptian film, Kshitij Vichare, student of
Fergusson College said, “It was full of silence.
There were not much dialogues but it was a
good break from regular Bollywood Masala.”
Mrinmayi Vaishampayan, a student of
Psychology, University of Pune, pointed out
the differences in Indian and Brazilian filmmakers. She said, “The cinematography and
composition in these films is very different.
However, they were not much different thematically.”
The Brazilian films focus on the struggle
and suffering of indigenous people. Nakhate
elaborates the point using the example of
filmmaker Glauber Roscha. “His film Antonio das Mortes is marked by his unique style
of filmmaking. It is an insight into the life of
people in Brazil,” he adds.
Nakhate also takes us into the process of
selection of these films. “Apart from subjective factors like the content and the director,
larger aspects like their contribution to cinema and different stylistic aspects are considered,” he says. It is the credit of this method
that the audiences are experiencing a comprehensive cultural exchange.
Exploring Spectrum of Lifestyles
Gayathree Ganesan &
Yesha Kotak
Typical Indian cinema mostly deals with one person’s point
of view for interpreting any
situation. The script should
talk about the story, not about
only one character said Bramma G, director of Kuttram
Kadithal (The Punishment).
He was present along with
producer Christy Siluvappan
and sound designer Anthony
B. Jayaruban on day 5 at the
13th Pune International Film
Festival (PIFF).
Bramma’s film, screened in
the Indian cinema section of
PIFF, explores an interesting spectrum of lifestyles and
showcases how one unexpected incident influences people
from diverse lifestyles.
Recounting the challenges
faced during the making of the
film, director Bramma said,
“Having no formal education
in film-making, I had a lot
to learn from my film’s crew,
who were experienced in this
craft.”
Kuttram Kadithal is the
first of its kind Tamil film in
terms of the theme it tackles.
The film deals with the responses of each character to

a particular incident, giving a
wider perspective to the plot.
On being asked about how the
movie will be taken forward,
the producer explained, “Our
aim is to not only commercially promote the film, but
to make it available to people
across the country.”
The film Mitra, which is based on
homosexuality, marks poet Sandeep
Khare’s debut as an actor in films.
He mentioned that the concept is
inspired from the works of eminent
Marathi playwright Vijay Tendulkar.
“Tendulkar had touched upon this
sensitive subject in the ‘60s. The
topic is still not accepted in society; it
was a thought ahead of his times,” he
said. Khare also expressed his gratitude for the opportunity that the film
gave him to interact with legendary
lyricist and poet Gulzar. The film features a poem by Gulzar, recited by
the poet himself, at the beginning of
the film.

‘The Association is a Win-Win Situation’
Shekhar Paigude
Valsa Nair-Singh, an IAS

is the Managing Director
of Maharashtra Tourism

She was the Secretary
of Environment of the
Maharashtra
Government
before taking over as the MD
of MTDC. The new rankings
suggest that MTDC stood
first among the Tourism Promotion Boards in India under
her management.
She reflects upon the association with Pune International Film Festival (PIFF).
Festival Venue
How has MTDC’s association with PIFF been? How do
you see the future of this affiliation?
India under your leadership.
How would you describe the
process through which you
achieved this?
It is a win-win situation for
PIFF and MTDC. PIFF is a promising platform for promoting our
brand "Maharashtra Unlimited".
We want to celebrate the natural,
cultural and manmade heritage
of Maharashtra and facilitate
tourism through the Short Film
Festival that we’ve introduced in
this edition of PIFF. We are planning to strengthen our affiliation
with PIFF with the aim to promote the culture of Maharashtra
along the sidelines. It would be
a great opportunity to showcase
our culture amidst the foreign
delegates present at the festival.
We are also planning to organize
programmes on handicrafts and
tribal culture from next year.
We changed our policy while
promoting Maharashtra tourism,
focusing on the unexplored side of
Maharashtra. We delved into rural tourism and nature-oriented
tourism. Ajanta and Verul caves
became the core of our promotion. We wanted to showcase the
Maharashtra that is beyond the
well-known sight-seeing destinations that have been promoted so
far.
MTDC was recognized as
the best Tourism Board in
Gold Sponsors
Will the winning film at the
MTDC Short Film Competition be used as the official
promotional film of MTDC?
MTDC is giving it a thought.
If the winning film exhibits
excellent quality and caters to
our idea of promoting tourism in
Maharashtra, we will consider it.

‘I Made No Compromises While
Filming for Oraalppokkam’
Shekhar Paigude
Sanal
Kumar
Sasidharan,
director of the Malyalam film
Oraalppokkam (Six Feet High),
is passionate about his film and
talks about his directorial debut
being screened at the 13th Pune
International Film Festival. This
film comments on human relationships and the thread that
binds and breaks relations, while
giving us a glimpse of the Uttarakhand tragedy. Here is what he
had to say:
Would you elaborate on the
theme of the film?
The film depicts the aftermath
of an emotional outbreak that
shatters a long-standing live-in
relationship, leading a couple
to part ways. It is a film about
contemporary women being independent and headstrong. It
shows that the existence of men
is incomplete without women. It
also addresses the environmental
issue through the depiction of the
Uttarakhand floods.
What is your opinion about
“live-in” relationships?
Live-in relationships are sustainable. Mutual understanding
and cooperation is the essence
of relationships. Mutual respect
and care is the foundation on
which a relationship rests. Being
self-centered, egoistic and selfish
is likely to create chaos in a relationship.
What would you say about
PIFF?
The success of a film festival depends on the audience. A mature
audience helps the festival to
flourish year after year. The audience at PIFF is intellectual and
sensitive. They interact with the
film crew, raising questions and
discussing cinema. It is a great
experience.
Were you burdened by the
fact that this was the first
crowd-funded Malyalam film
and also your first feature
film?
I have waited for a good script
for almost 12 years. In the meantime, I made a 20-minute short
film called ‘Frog’. The Kerali organization put faith in me and
raised money through contributions. There was no pressure from
anyone. I made no compromises
while filming for Oraalppokkam.
The film panned out exactly the
way I wanted it to.
About Dark Secrets
Pallavi Dewan
There was a lot of anticipation as people lined up
for the screening of the Turkish film Silsile (Consequences), directed by OzanAciktan at the 13th Pune
International Film Festival (PIFF). The screen with a
seating capacity of 375 went on to accommodate about
500 people who occupied the aisles.
Set in Istanbul, Silsile revolves around the complexities in the lives of Cenk, Ece, Merve and Faruk. They
have crossed paths at different phases of their lives,
sharing multiple relationships with each other through
the course of the story. The film depicts the ups and
downs in their lives as they struggle to keep dark secrets
from each other, revealing the chaosthat breaks loose
as secrets begin to surface. It portrays the darker side
of human nature, commenting on the ‘consequences’ of
keeping secrets. The movie was well received by an enthusiastic a
 udience.
I loved the first few minutes of the movie; the way it
began was extremely interesting. But it wasdraggedunnecessarilytowards the end.
Tejas Gokhale, Student of Artsat SP College.
I liked the movie and could easily relate to it as it dealt
with the complexities of human interaction. Nowadays,
people act first and think later. This is bound to have certain consequences. The film is a good example of this.
Rucha Prabhune Student at the Department of Communication Studies, University of Pune.
The film is absolutely brilliant. The plot of the movie
was superb, giving an edge to the film. The ending of the
film was the best part as it had thegreatest impact on me.
Unmesh Kathwale, VFX student from Reliance Aims.
