Dear Friends,
A
s you have seen on our cover, this has been a
banner year for our scholar/athletes. Nineteen
members of the Class of 2014 will be playing their
particular sports on the college/university level. While
their athletic prowess brought them to the attention of
the higher ed. recruiters, it was their academic abilities
that made the scholarships possible. In fact, of the

Ready graduates. The
passion that these
graduates exhibited while at Ready carried over into
their college careers and has brought them many
accolades. (And, as a reminder to all alums, please
keep us informed of your “life after Ready.” Use the
form found in this issue, send us your information via
e-mail or snail mail, or use the forms found on our
website under Alumni/ae. While the spotlight shines
on sports in this issue, we are pleased to include a
report from a Ready graduate from the ’60s….keep
the news coming!)
education at the next level.
Commencement this year held a special meaning: it
was the 50th ceremony for Bishop Ready High School.
We were very fortunate to have several members of
the first graduating class, the Class of 1965, in
attendance, including two members who served as
marshals. Our keynote speaker was a member of the
40th Anniversary Class, Father Craig Eilerman, Ready
’75. This year’s class will be attending institutions of
higher education ranging from the near (The Ohio
State University and Ohio Dominican University,
among others) to the “distant” (The United States
Naval Academy and the University of Massachusetts
Lowell, among others!). As we prepare for a new class
to enter Ready, the Class of 2018, we wish Godspeed
to our newest alums!

Another successful Knight at the Races was held in
May, raising monies for our students, enabling them
to enter or continue at Ready. This event, along with
our annual fund and the generous donations made to
our Legacy Scholarships, is an important part of what
makes Ready, “Ready.” The ability to help our
students, who, believe me, are grateful for the
assistance, is a hallmark of the Ready family. Many
who have benefitted from your generosity come back
later and contribute to the annual fund themselves.
You show the way, you make a Ready education
possible for many, and they learn from you: repay, so
that others may benefit.
Last fall saw the dedication of the Suzanne and
Robert Wehinger Peace Courtyard. This fall, during
Catholic Schools’ Week, we will be dedicating our
“Homeless Jesus” sculpture, to be positioned near the
Peace Courtyard. The sculpture is a “think” piece,
designed to make us stop and think about what
Christianity and the gospels compel us to do in
relation to our fellow human beings. The sculpture is
in keeping with Pope Francis’ mandate to love and be
of service to those who are the least among us. If you
are in the area after September 29, we hope that you
will stop by and visit this powerful piece of artwork.
In this issue you will find an order form for a smaller
version of the statue, a limited number of which are
available, with proceeds benefitting, once again, the
Ready students.
Finally, I invite you to join us in celebrating all
things Ready: from Spirit Breakfast on Thursday,
October 9, to our sports, band, and theatrical events,
your presence is always welcome and appreciated! If
you aren’t already doing so, you may follow us on

School), or on our website (brhs.org). Because of
weather and other considerations, I urge you to check
one of these venues to confirm that said event is

SCHOLAR ATHLETES
F
rom its earliest days, Bishop Ready High School has
been a proponent of “a sound mind in a sound body”
and, to that end, has incorporated a vigorous sports program
into its offerings. Ready has prided itself on encouraging all
students to participate in some sport, prompting many who
otherwise would not have done so to try out for, and make,
various teams. (Of course, we also encourage all students to get
involved in our co- and extra-curricular offerings; the wide
range of choices available insures that there is something to
meet everyone’s interests, or enough options to challenge them
to try something new!)

With a wide range of choices, from basketball and
bowling to swimming and wrestling, our sports program has
offered students the chance to get involved, for fun, for
camaraderie, for the challenge…and for the chance to play on
the college/university level someday!
This year, the senior class has done just that, to the highest
degree: in a graduating class of 119 students, 19 students (over
13% of the class) will be playing their chosen sport on the
college/university level.
The cover photo, reproduced here, showcases that pool of
talented students who have “won” academic scholarships to
colleges near and far, enabling them to continue their chosen
sport at a new level.

A quick “review” of the recent past at Ready provides a
list of which any school would be proud: With full and partial
scholarships in baseball, basketball (boys’ and girls’), cross
country, football, soccer (boys’ and girls’), softball, track,
wrestling, and varsity cheerleading (to mention most), Ready
holds its own when it comes to providing another opportunity
for students to advance their academic careers in top-notch
institutions of higher education, while excelling at a sport they
are passionate about.
A sampling of those institutions which have offered Ready
students academic and athletic scholarships enabling them
to continue their sports careers are: Ashland University,
Capital University, Cleveland State University, Columbus State
Community College, Defiance College, Hillsdale College,
Indiana University/Purdue University at Fort Wayne, James
Madison University, Lafayette College, Lake Erie College,
Marietta College, Michigan State University, Ohio Dominican
University, Ohio Wesleyan University, St. Catharine College,
Tiffin University, the University of Akron, the University of
Dayton, the University of Kentucky, the University of
Northwestern Ohio, the University of South Carolina Aiken,
Urbana University, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State
University, Walsh University, Wheeling Jesuit University, and
Youngstown State University.
Since many schools offer academic scholarships only with the
chance to then continue in a sport, our athletes are true
scholar/athletes, with their high grade point averages and list of
extra- and co-curricular activities weighing in as important
factors in the awarding of scholarships.
Most, if not all, of our scholar/athletes are honor roll
members; many belong to the National Honor Society and
the Beta Club, both of which have very high academic
standards for admission. As with all Ready students, our
scholar/athletes are involved in volunteer work, either in their
parishes or for community centers, and many times, our
students do both, plus more!
The role of religion and ethics plays no small part in
athletics at Ready. Our athletes meet before games for prayer
and have instilled in them both the desire to win and the
acknowledgement that every game has a winner and a loser and
that sometimes to win means that “…you can meet with
Triumph and Disaster and treat those two impostors just the
same.”
In addition to our stellar athletes, Ready has been
blessed with many great coaches throughout the years.
Some have remained at Ready for only a short time; others have
stayed and worked through the lean and the good years and have
never lost hope. The great coaches have not only made our
students better athletes, they have helped to mold them into
better people. Our scholar/athletes acknowledge the important
role that our coaches play in helping them to succeed, not only
on the field of play but also in life.
We hope to periodically have updates on the athletes of the
class of 2014. It was, indeed, a banner year for our
scholar/athletics!

CONTINUES FOR THESE READY GRADS…
A
s we celebrate the successes of our scholar/athletes
in the class of 2014, it’s interesting to note what successes
on that next level Ready graduates from other years have
attained. A look at two recent Ready grads who played their
sports at the next level…both from the Ready Class of 2010.
THE STATS DON’T TELL THE WHOLE STORY…
It might be enough just to pour over Joe Graessle’s stats
and conclude that he has made his mark on college
basketball. He is a member of Tiffin University’s Class of 2014,
receiving a Bachelor of Criminal Justice degree in May, and just
listing his athletic accomplishments would take at least a page.
But there is more to Joe that “just” playing basketball…
His commitment to others was
fostered during his years at Bishop
Ready and continued throughout
his years at Tiffin. In high school,
he volunteered at the local Y and at
his parish; at Tiffin, he was
involved with reading at local
schools, attending high school
basketball games at Calvert High
(the Catholic school in Tiffin,
which Joe said reminds him a lot of
Ready), and bringing an 8-year old
boy from the community who had
cancer onto the Tiffin team so that
team members could be the boy’s
support system as he went through
his treatments.

“The community of Tiffin, Ohio, has supported me from
day one of stepping on campus and I am thankful that I found
such a good fit.” Joe said. “I feel that, in the position of being a
college athlete, it is easy to get out in the community and I
made it a goal of mine to impact the community as much as I
possibly could.”
On the court, Joe ended his career at Tiffin with 2,162 points,
second all-time at the school and first in the nation among
Division II active career leaders. He was the only player to lead
the team in assists for four consecutive years and he started all
110 games in his collegiate career. He made 295 3-point field
goals, which was also number one in the nation, NCAA
Division II, and his 735 field goals garnered him the number
one spot in the nation among active career leaders.
Joe set numerous records at Tiffin, including most 3-pointers
made, attempted, and minutes played. With 1,575 points, he is
the leading career scorer in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference (GLIAC). He made the freshman
All-American Team, NABC (National Association of Basketball
Coaches) Division II, and set single season records for steals and
points and made 3-pointers. In each of his four years, Joe led the
Tiffin Dragons in assists and during his junior and senior years
he led the GLIAC in steals.

Julie Franken Graessle ’83 and
Mike ’82, Joe comes by his athletic prowess honestly…his mother
was All Ohio ’83 and set season records with totals of 493 points
and 105 blocked shots; his father was a member of the ’82 CCL
Champion Baseball Team which compiled a school record 22
wins. The Graessles sponsor an annual golf tournament to honor
Mike’s father and other family members and friends who have
died, with proceeds going to Bishop Ready, cancer research, and
local mobile mammography screenings.)
The Silver Knights compiled a 19-7 record during Joe’s senior
year and lost in the state semi-finals to Orrville, with 1.8 seconds
to play. The final score was 50-48. Joe was 1st Team/All CCL,
1st Team/All District, District 10 Player of the Year, District 10
All Star Game, Dispatch Player of the Week, WTVN Player of
the Week (3x), and 1st Team/All Ohio.
“My time at Ready was some of the best years of my life,” Joe
said. “The life-long friends and connections that have come
from the Ready community are irreplaceable. I would go back
and do the four years again if I could in a heartbeat!”
Joe continued, “My favorite memory at Ready was the run to
the State Final Four in basketball during my senior year. The
support from the school and the entire Ready community was
something that I will never forget, and it will stay as one of my
best memories for the rest of my life. There is no better feeling
that the one you get from the caring and support you receive
from the Ready community.”
Family ties run deep with Joe and he is quite proud of his
“little” sister Lauren, Ready ’12. She is currently a junior at
Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, where she is a forensic
science major and, according to Joe, “actually just finished last
semester with a 4.0. I’m really proud of everything that she is
doing and the person that she has become and I know that I can
always count on her being my biggest fan.” Joe is sure that “she’s
going to be very successful, wherever life takes her.”

Joe’s advice to current Ready students is summed up
quite succinctly: “Dream Big. Work Hard. Stay Humble.
These three things are crucial to achieving success in life.
Whatever your dream is, make sure it’s as big of a dream
as you can think of. If your dreams don’t scare you, then
they aren’t big enough and you are selling yourself short!
Once you have the dream, work as hard as you possibly
can to achieve it. Finally, stay humble… no matter what
success you have, it is important to remember what got
you to that success and where you came from.”
Joe’s big dream is to play professional ball and, having just
signed with an agent, he is well on his way to achieving that
goal. “Tiffin put me in a spot to achieve this opportunity. You
actually get paid to travel the world playing a sport that you
love.” What could be better than that? We are quite sure that
Joe will continue to work hard to achieve that dream and also
quite sure that he will remain humble.
“Overall, I think that my Ready experience made me the
person that I am today,” Joe said. “The people that I met, and
what I learned from Ready, shaped who I am and I will forever
be grateful for what Ready has done for me.”
ON AND OFF THE FIELD,
CONSISTENCY AND COMMITMENT MATTER
As a senior at Bishop Ready, Matt Feeney took to the
field and the court, dividing his time among baseball,
basketball, and football. In the end, he accepted a scholarship
to play football at John Carroll University. Now, having
completed his courses at JCU this May, having earned a degree
in marketing with a minor in entrepreneurship, Matt has
accepted a coaching position on the John Carroll University
football staff where he will coach under head coach Tom Arth
and defensive coordinator
Chris Shula. He plans to
apply for a JCU Football
Graduate Assistantship
when one becomes available
in 2015. Matt has his sights
trained on eventually
becoming a head coach at a
Division I college and there
is no doubt that he will
achieve that goal.

Business, Matt maintained a
3.3 grade point average and
was a four-year letter winner

for the JCU football team.
His accomplishments on the football field would be highlights at
any school and those achievements were met and exceeded off
the field. For all four years at JCU, Matt was recognized as a
Scholar Athlete.

On the field, Matt was a starting middle linebacker for the
number one scoring defense and the number two total defense
in all of Division III football for the 2013 season. He started in
22 games and played in 39 and served as team captain. He was
named the OAC (Ohio Athletic Conference) Gene Slaughter
Most Outstanding Linebacker, First Team/All OAC, and twotime OAC Defensive Player of the Week, as well as a member of
the Division III football.com National Team of the Week, First
Team/All-Region, and First Team/All-State linebacker by
OhioCollegeFootball.com.
During his senior season, Matt was credited with 63 tackles,
including eight tackles for a loss; four sacks; two forced fumbles;
and two interceptions. He received a post-graduate scholarship
award from the Northeastern Ohio Chapter of the National
Football Foundation. And, Matt continued to be a real presence
off of the field, as well.
He was a football representative on the Student Athletic
Advisory Committee and a member of the Unity Council for
four years. He was a group leader in the Jesuit Day of Service
and a peer tutor, and was a lector at campus liturgies. Matt was
also involved in Special Olympics in Northeast Ohio and served
as a basketball coach (putting that Ready experience to good
use!) and bowling instructor for the developmentally disabled.
In his hometown, Matt was involved with the Columbus branch
of Cornerstone of Hope, a center for grieving children, teens,
and adults, and Run the Race, “helping inner city kids run
through the obstacles of life and come out winners.”
In Matt’s senior year (’10) at Ready, he received the president’s
Award for Educational Excellence and the Ohio Board of
Education Award of Merit. He was an Honor Roll student and a
member of the Ready Homecoming Court. Matt was 2nd
Team/All District, baseball, and 1st Team/All CCL and Special
Mention/All District, football.
Matt describes his time at Ready as “four years with my best
friends that went too fast.” He continues, “Ready prepared me
academically so I wasn’t lost when I got to Carroll. It taught me
an incredible work ethic that carried over to my college years.”
As for his years at John Carroll: “It was a personal growing
experience that polished me for the real world.”
As for any advice for current Ready students, Matt suggests
that they “have fun, get good grades, and enjoy your friends
while you’re still close.”
Matt is the son of Dave and Melanie Feeney, long-time
supporters of all things Ready and the force behind the
annual Euchre Extravaganza. Matt’s brother Andrew is a
Ready alum, class of 2006. Andrew is a graduate (class of ’10) of
Miami University and is a Senior Financial Analyst at L Brands.
Andrew also continues to do volunteer work, including coaching
7th grade basketball at St. Brendan and participating in and
raising funds for the Pelotonia Race in Columbus, a bike tour
with one goal, to end cancer.
As the older brother, Andrew also shared his advice for
current Ready students: “Learn to communicate with all
kinds of people and build relationships. Life moves pretty
fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you
could miss it.”
Good advice for Ready students, younger brothers…and for
all of us!
We wish Joe and Matt well as they continue to forge
ahead with their plans and we know that we can count on
them to continue to be excellent spokespersons, in word and in
deed, for Bishop Ready. They exemplify the true scholar/athlete,
the best example of what sports can accomplish.

A Wicked Witch…
W
hen strange creatures walk the halls of Bishop Ready and
(normally) sane students are heard talking to thin air, why
it must be theatre time at Bishop Ready!
With casts composed of students from freshman through senior
classes, all three productions gave Ready students an outlet and a
showcase for their talents (which, by the way, are prodigious!).
Productions are professionally directed by Ready faculty member
Jill Larger, with costumes by Tina Castorano, mother of Christopher
’08 and Anthony ’10.
This year, in addition to the fall production of It’s a Wonderful
Life, the Ready thespians “showed” us an invisible (or is he?) rabbit
named Harvey and took us to the Emerald City of Oz.

The winter production of Harvey saw a very convincing Michael
Osborn ’14 in the role made famous by Jimmy Stewart, Elwood P.
Dowd. Seniors Trianna Connolly as Veta Louise Simmons, Melanie
Francis as Myrtle Mae Simmons, Korey Kelly as Wilson, Maria
Walliser-Wejebe as Betty Chumley, Ava Willford as Ruth Kelly, and
Christopher Wiser as Dr. William B. Chumley, were joined by
juniors Mark Gnatowski as Dr. Lyman Sanderson, Maggie Mills as
Miss Johnson, Rylie Wahl as Ethel Chauvenet, and Andrés WalliserWejebe as E.J. Lofgren, with sophomore Michael Creagh as Judge
Omar Gaffney.
From the confines of Chumley’s Rest Sanitarium to the open
spaces of Kansas was but a small step for the talented actors, and
their talented director, Jill Larger.
The spring musical, The Wizard of Oz, transformed Ready’s Little
Theatre into a wonderland populated by Winkie Guards, flying
monkeys, and Munchkin Kids. Filled with hummable and beloved
songs, The Wizard of Oz never fails to remind all that there really is
no place like home.

From “Over the Rainbow” to “We’re Off to See the Wizard”
and “Ding, Dong! The Witch is Dead,” the show provides
both an enjoyable respite from the “real” world but valuable
lessons about home, brains, hearts, and courage.
Led by junior Maggie Mills as Dorothy, the enthusiastic cast
included seniors Trianna Connolly as Aunt Em, Korey Kelly as
the Tin Woodsman/Hickory, Michael Osborn as Cowardly
Lion/Zeke, Payne VanTilburg as The Wizard, Ava Willford as
Glinda–the Good Witch, and Christopher Wiser as Uncle
Henry/Winkie General; juniors Mark Gnatowski as
Scarecrow/Hunk, Maggie Mills as Dorothy, and Rylie Wahl as
a very scary Wicked Witch of the West; sophomores Michael
Creagh (in his sixth production at Ready!) as Munchkin
Mayor/Oz Guard and Molly Sullivan as Munchkin Coroner.
The Munchkin Kids were ably portrayed by Breilynn
Beckford, Gabrielle, Grace, and Gwendolyn Larger,
Annemarie Schofield, and Lia Wahl.
Junior Spencer Coleman served as Stage Manager for both
productions and artwork for both playbills was designed by
Rob Wahl.
We urge you to join us for next year’s productions (check
our website and app for up-to-date information) and support
Bishop Ready Theatre as a patron or sponsor in our playbills.
The students do a wondrous job and we guarantee a good
time for all!

A Fun Evening…That Benefits Ready Students!
O
nce again, the extended Ready family showed its
support for our students by attending our third annual
Knight at the Races, this year held at Our Lady of
Victory Parish Center on May 9.
The venue may have changed but the spirit remained the same:
have a great time, for a great cause!
In addition to the “races,” the evening included a silent auction
(thank you to both donors and bidders!), a Derby Hat Contest (won
by Bob Stoll ’72, husband of Barb ’78), and a delicious meal catered
by Mass Appeal Dining Services.
When it came to naming horses, creativity was not a problem!
Lanzalot, Pride and Tradition, OGNIB (sponsored by St. Margaret
Bingo) and BINGO (Lancaster Bingo), Pi in the Sky (the Math
Department), St. Thomas Equinas, Survive and Advance, Carollinator,
Mezinator, Diggin’ Deep for the Win, and Dangerous Den are just
some examples of winning names, if not winning horses!

50th Commencement Ceremony

This yearʼs graduation was extra-special: it was the 50th commencement ceremony
for Bishop Ready High School.
A
s part of the ceremony, members of the first
graduating class, the Class of 1965, were in attendance
and received special recognition. Two members of that
first graduating class, Sandy Oddi and Donald Bradley, served
as Marshals.
There were 119 graduating seniors in the Class of 2014
and 97.5% of them are continuing their education at the
next level. Nineteen members of the class were awarded
academic scholarships to continue to play their chosen sport
on the college or university level. Fifty-six members of the
class received full or partial scholarships to attend the college
or university of their choice.
As is tradition, the Baccalaureate Mass was celebrated on
the evening prior to graduation. This year, St. Brendan Parish
served as the venue, with Father Robert Penhallurick, pastor,
presiding. Father Joseph Yokum, brother of graduating senior
Josh Yokum, was homilist and concelebrants at the liturgy
were Msgr. John K. Cody, pastor at St. Christopher; Father
Leo Connolly, pastor at St. Cecilia; Father Jeffrey Rimelspach,
pastor at St. Margaret of Cortona; and Father Pat Toner,
pastor at St. Joseph/Plain City. Deacons Joseph Knapke,
Ready faculty member and father of Ready alums, Jack
Malone of St. Cecilia, and Andy Naporano, father of a Ready
alum and a current Ready student, assisted at the liturgy.

Keynote speaker for the Commencement Ceremony was
Ready alum Father Craig Eilerman, Class of 1975. Father
Craig currently serves as pastor at St. Mary of the Assumption
Parish in Lancaster, Ohio. Jordan Bair was valedictorian and
Maria Walliser-Wejebe was salutatorian.
Music for the Commencement included “The Last Four
Years,” with lyrics and music by Bayley King ’14 with Pam
Welsh-Huggins; vocals by Trianna Connolly, Kaitlyn Keyes,
Bayley King, Lauren Rivera, Brianne Schell, and Sarah
Warbis, all members of the Class of ’14; and “Wherever I
Go,” lyrics and music by Adam Watts, vocals by Kaitlyn
Keyes ’14 and Lauren Rivera ’14. The Bishop Ready Band,
under the direction of Craig R. Lewis, provided the music for
the national anthem, “The Grand Old Duke of York” by
Pierre LaPlante, and the Ready alma mater.
Matthew Brickner, Dean of Students, presented the
graduates, and principal Celene A. Seamen and advisory
board president Karen Wiser presented the diplomas to the
graduating seniors.
In addition to honoring members of the Class of 1965,
special recognition was also given to the Classes of ’74, ’84,
and ’94, who are celebrating fortieth, thirtieth, and twentieth
reunions this year.

Catching Up With…
Daniel Howells, Class of 1967
“Catching up” can be taken literally when
talking about Dan Howells.
H
e is an avid traveller and has visited all of the 48 lower
states plus Hawaii, England, Italy, and Spain. Now retired,
Dan previously worked with the Arizona Association of
Realtors as a Business Application Specialist performing installation,
training, and support of real estate-related software. Now living in
Florida, in “the beautiful horse country between Ocala and
Gainesville,” Dan has also lived in Ft. Lauderdale and Jacksonville,
Florida, southern California, and Phoenix. In addition to holding a
real estate license in Florida, Dan trained as a graphic artist and
worked in the aerospace industry and is a Microsoft Certified
Systems Engineer, installing, training, and supporting Microsoft
products throughout south Florida. During his near 10-year stay in
California, he worked as Administrator and Human Resource
Manager for a large management consulting firm.
Now, he is a committed “RVer” and spends time planning the
next adventure!
“Travel has always intrigued me,” Dan said. “I recall when our
father would be home, one of his favorite activities was to just get
the family into the car and take a drive. I still thoroughly enjoy that
activity and ride one of my motorcycles almost daily along the back
roads of Florida.
“I became enamored by the RV lifestyle while living in south
Florida. My eldest brother and his wife would annually leave their
home in Phoenix and spend the summers traveling in their RV. For
several years I would fly to an airport near one of their stops and
join them for three or four weeks of RVing along two-lane roads on
their trip back to Arizona. Consequently, I purchased my own RV
in 2005 and enjoyed four cross country trips during 2005 and
2006 while I took a sabbatical from working.
“I was fortunate to spend three weeks in 2007 with just my
mom RVing between Florida and Arizona prior to her death the
following year.”

The trips throughout the contiguous 48 states were not his only
travels:
“In 1986, I enjoyed ten days investigating the area surrounding
London and decided I would someday return to Europe for
additional touring. In August of 2006, I was lucky enough to spend
a month in Italy and fell in love with the country as a potential
retirement destination and also decided I should investigate Spain.”
Daniel explored his options by researching Spain on the Internet
and through YouTube videos. He further narrowed his research of
Spain to the Costa Blanca area, where he spent three weeks in
February of 2012.
“It was during that visit that I made the decision to take an early
retirement and return to the same area for an extended stay and
possibly make a permanent move. So I retired in August of 2012,
and spent October, November, and December in a phenomenal
condo overlooking the city of Benidorm and the Mediterranean. I
still believe I may return there permanently someday.”
Although “without question, Spain” has been Dan’s favorite
destination, “touring Italy would have to be one of my favorite
adventures. The tour of Pompeii and Mt. Vesuvius was truly breathtaking, as I viewed mosaics containing hundreds of thousands of
individual pieces still intact.” His ten days in Rome where not
enough to see everything and he found the history and sights to be
fascinating.
As for future trips, he is considering a trip to Ecuador and/or
Panama; his three months living in Spain remains his “trip of a
lifetime” that he feels will never be topped…although he does
believe that “Heaven must look much like Yosemite National Park
in California!”
When looking back to his time in Columbus, Dan says, “My
four years at Ready will always be some of the best memories, and
technology such as Facebook has made it possible to reconnect with
several of my classmates and old friends. It would be hard to beat
the memories I recall of sock-hops, dancing at The Gloria and
Valley Dale, performing in front of my schoolmates with “The
Chantels,” and the opportunity to escort our homecoming queen.
Everywhere we went during those years,” Dan continued, “it
seemed that it would be a group of at least 20 or 30 of us and the
time would be filled with laughter and fun.”
Dan offers some advice to current Ready students: “Given the
opportunity…travel! Experiencing other cultures is fascinating. I
can personally attest that the people of Italy and Spain could not be
more helpful to tourists. I always have a smile cross my face when I
think of the amount of time that I spent learning the survival
phrases in Italian and then, upon greeting one of the locals in their
native language, the response would immediately be in English!
Likewise, upon my arrival in Alicante, Spain, three local teenagers at
McDonald’s drew a map on a napkin for me because none of them
spoke English and I was incredibly lost because of the difference in
road signs. It was very much an Amazing Race moment.”
While still a student at Ready, Dan worked part-time and was
trained as a full-charge bookkeeper with Gilbert Shoe Store in
downtown Columbus. He subsequently worked for Penn Central
Railroad and Buckeye Steel Castings. The father of two sons, Dan has
three siblings who live in the Columbus area, one brother in Arizona,
one brother in California, and a sister in the New York Hamptons.
His wanderlust remains and we are sure that many more
adventures await him!

The National Merit Scholarship Program awarded seniors
Jordan Bair and Maria Walliser-Wejebe Letters of
Commendation in recognition of their outstanding
academic promise, based on high scores on the
PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, taken in
their junior year. They are the Class of 2014 valedictorian
and salutatorian, respectively.

The Bishop Ready “Brain Game” team of Michael Osborn
’14, Mark Gnatowski ’15, Stephen Landy ’15, and
Elizabeth Cline ’15 with moderator/faculty member Ben
Hilsheimer and the $3,000 “runner-up” check that they
earned for Bishop Ready.

Maria Walliser-Wejebe ’14 was named to the 2014 AllDiocesan Academic Honor Team and Marina Sweet ’14
received the Diocesan Bishop Herrmann Service Award.

Seniors Jack Downs and Josh Yokum completed projects
and earned Eagle Scout rank. Jack created a Stations of
the Cross Patio for St. Mary Magdalene Parish and Josh
created and installed industrial-size shelves to expand the
space at the London H.E.L.P. House, which serves as a food
pantry, soup kitchen, and free store.

Joey Smith ’15 competed in gymnastics at the 2014 Men’s
Junior Olympic National Championships, Junior Elite
Division, where he represented both Region 5 and his club
team, Integrity. At the Championships, Joey was
recognized as an Academic All-American. He placed 36th in
the nation for the Junior Elite Division for Level 10, age
16, in the All-Around (all six events) and he was part of
the Level 10 Region 5 Team that placed first overall at
Nationals. Joey continues to train and hopes to return to
Junior Olympics’ Nationals Elite Division in the spring of
2015 as a Level 10 (17 year-old age group).

Sports Updates…
Individual honors:
BOWLING—District Champs!
The girls’ team finished 1 at District Finals, 9 at State
Finals, first in the Central for the third straight year, and
claimed a CCL title for the third straight year.
In individual honors, senior Paige Sutfin took high
game (261) and high average (199) awards. At the
District Finals, Paige was the only young woman to bowl
three-200 games.
The boys’ team finished 6th at the District Finals and

4 in the Central Division. In individual honors, senior
Andrew Rinehart took high game (258) and high
average (192) awards.
Seniors Jordan Bair, Austin Carnes, Olivia DePassio,
and Marina Sweet were named Academic All-Ohio,
having maintained a quality point average above 3.5
and Marina Sweet was awarded the District Bowler of
the Year Scholarship.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL—Regional Champs!
The team finished the season as Regional Champs and
made it to the Final Four at the Schott, before losing to
Villa Angela-St. Joseph by a score of 55-40.
Coach Don Worstell was selected as coach in the
District 10 All-Star Game.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL—District Champs!
The team earned Ready’s fifth District Championship
and ended the season with a CCL second-place finish.
Seniors Margaret Berkemeyer and Caroline Riewe
were selected to the District 10 All-Star Game. Margaret
Berkemeyer broke a 32-year school record for field goal
percentage in a season, formerly held by Mary Kusan ’82.
The new record is 63%, besting the old record of 62%.
Caroline Riewe set a new school record with 125 assists
in a season.
Coach Joe Lang, Ready ’73, was named District 10,
Division III, Coach of the Year, as voted on by coaches.

SWIMMING AND DIVING
The team continues to grow in size, this year
being the first that the team was large enough in
number to compete in relays. At the Sectional
Meet, every swimmer scored points in the
respective events and sophomore Savannah Bolten
qualified for the State District Meet, swimming the
100 butterfly and 200 individual medley.
WRESTLING
Seniors Patrik Garren, Patrick Stover, and
William Martello placed at the Districts: Patrik
Garren was District Champion, Patrick Stover
placed second, and Will Martello placed fourth.
Patrik Garren finished the States in third place. He
led the team in wins with 47 and pins with 36.
Senior Steven Pozz led the team in takedowns
with 101.

NEWS
Carrier siblings, Jessica ’05 and Ryan ’07, are travelling the
world, working and learning about cultures in Asia and South
America. Jessica is a high school AP Chemistry Teacher at a top
International School in S. Korea. Ryan is living in Lima, Peru,
and has visited 20 countries. Their sister Stephanie ’12 is a
junior at Bowling Green University majoring in Human
Development and Family Studies with a minor in sociology.
