Pass all courses under a program; ii. Obtain a CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) equivalent to or more than 2.00; iii. Obtain sufficient total credit hours for a program; iv. Student who obtain the minimum passing grade (C-, D+ and D) is allowed to repeat the course only once to improve their grade for the next semester including the short semester. Only the higher grade calculation will be taken into the result without adding the credit hour. v. Fulfill all program's requirement and certified by the Lembaga Peperiksaan. DEPARTMENT OF DESIGN AND VISUAL COMMUNICATION (JRKV) 26 INTRODUCTION 3.0 The Department of Design and Visual Communication (JRKV), Politeknik Muadzam Shah offers an exciting and creative environment for students, department members and the greater Politeknik Muadzam Shah (PMS) community. That environment has recently been enhanced by new studios and lab. The expansion provides students with outstanding studio spaces and the tools with which to create and explore in the visual communication and design it self. We are a multidisciplinary department that offers diploma in two academic areas, which is Diploma in Graphic Design and Diploma in Print Media Technology at the moment. All of our courses of study allow students to develop visual literacy and acquire the skills required to conceptualize, fabricate, and evaluate works of art and design. Our mission is to provide a broad understanding of the arts across disciplines, cultures, styles, and media, to encourage students to embrace new technologies and materials, develop creativity and critical thinking. JRKV now headed by the Head of Department who is assisted by 10 academic staffs and 2 nonacademic staffs. Through the leadership of a visionary leader and dedicated lecturers, it is hoped we are able to produce quality graduates in line with the motto of the polytechnic ‘ Menjana Minda Strategik”. 4.0 5.0 Add Course 3.1 Students can add courses with conditions not exceeding the number of credit hours allowed for the semester. Adding courses can be done by filling the particular form. 3.2 Add courses can be made from 3rd until 6th week of an academic session. Students should get advice and recommendation from the Academic Advisor and obtain an approval from Head of Department. 3.3 Add Courses Form that have been signed by Head of Department shall be submitted to the PPK Department to update the course registration sheet. 3.4 After the period specified, students are not allowed to add any courses. 3.5 PPK will forward the Course Registration sheets for the courses involved to Head of Department a day after the given period to be distributed to particular course’s lecturers. Drop Course 4.1 Students are allowed to drop the course with one condition that the students’ credit hours are not less than 12 hours. Drop course can be done by filling the Drop Course Form. 4.2 Course’s dropping can be done on the 3rd until the 6th week of an academic session. Students should get an advice from the Academic Advisor or the Head of Program, and obtain an approval from the Head of Department. 4.3 Drop Course Form that have been signed by the Head of Department shall be submitted to the PPK Department to update the course registration sheet. 4.4 After the period specified, students are not allowed to drop any courses. 4.5 PPK will forward the Course Registration sheets for the courses involved to Head of Department a day after the given period to be distributed to particular course’s lecturers. Repeat Course 5.1 4 Student who fails two or more courses in previous semester is required to repeat that particular course/s in any semester after getting confirmation from the Examination Board. 25 LIST OF STAFFS 2.3.2 Students Senior Getting the Result KB and Student Repeat 2.3.2.1 Academic Advisor distributes course registration form on the course registration. Based on the book ”instruction Examination and Assessment”, course registration will be conducted within fourteen (14) days from the date of formal study session began. Any delay course registration must obtain approval from the Head of Department. 1.2 Students can only register for courses after registration studies. For students who completed Industrial Training, students must meet all conditions set by the Industrial Training of PMS before being allowed to register courses. 1.3 Students who have registered for the course are required to follow the complete course for learning activities in accordance with the timetable for a study session. This course presents the responsibilities of workers in implementing and complying to safe and healthy approaches at work. Understanding of notifications of accidents, dangerous occurrence, poisoning and diseases and liability for offences will be imparted upon students. This course will also provide an understanding of the key issues in workplace ergonomics and guide the students gradually into this multi-disciplinary science. VG601 - PHOTOGRAPHY 2 PHOTOGRAPHY 2 is the continuation of PHOTOGRAPHY 1 which focuses on effective photography techniques. This course emphasizes commercial photography needs in the graphic industry field. The module allows exploration in concept, mood in photography and explores the use of advanced digital camera controls and software editing techniques. This course will also focus on the creative development and design process. DIPLOMA OF GRAPHIC DESIGN VG604 - ENVIRONMENTAL GRAPHICS ENVIRONMENTAL GRAPHICS introduces the fundamental process of creating signage systems pertaining to environmental design. This module covers the theory of signage system, design procedures, construction process and project. It also deals with the impact of visual perception on the readability and legibility of effective signage, and the visual understanding in three-dimensional environmental graphics. Students will be trained to master the fundamental skills in developing a complete signage system for particular environment. Students will be able to expose their presentation skills and technique consisting of critique sessions and portfolio review. 7 SEMESTER 6 VG602 - GRAPHIC DESIGN PROJECT GRAPHIC DESIGN PROJECT focuses on idea and concept development in producing visual communication, reflecting effective design skills in one of the following categories; Corporate Communication & Branding, Advertising & New Media Design and Illustration & Packaging Design. It starts with data collecting, identifying concept and followed by design process. Subsequently, students are encouraged to collaborate with either commercial or non-commercial industries which will to expose them to cultural trends, technological development and current issues. Throughout the process of producing this design project, the new media will be widely explored and used. The elements and principles used in visual communications and designs determine the styles and trends that form the essences of all aspects in design application. These introduce students to a wide range of artistic and design techniques. VG102 - PROLOGUE TO GRAPHIC DESIGN PROLOGUE TO GRAPHIC DESIGN introduces graphic design as a broad discipline that encompasses many different aspects and elements. Students will be expose to the history of graphic design from early to 20 century and introduce to the icons of graphic design. However, the current issues and trends of graphic design will continuously discusses to create an awareness of a design that may be philosophical sensory, aesthetic, emotional or political in nature. VV101 - FUNDAMENTALS OF DRAWING FUNDAMENTALS OF DRAWING introduces the student to the elements and principles of drawing. Emphasis will be placed upon using various techniques and mediums in drawing. Experiences will be gained from exploring and viewing the physical environment and development of the drawn image. VG202 - DIGITAL IMAGING DIGITAL IMAGING exposes students to basic digital tools and techniques in editing and manipulating images. Students are taught the fundamental skills of scanning images, manipulating complex visuals and effects, utilizing image editing and manipulating software. Formats of output images in the form of media and medium are taught as well. VG204 - ILLUSTRATION ILLUSTRATION introduces students to illustration practices and techniques using a combination of materials and media approaches within a creative studio environment. Students learn technical skills and explore a broad range of ideas, directions and techniques to form individuality in illustration style. VG201 - TYPOGRAPHY 1 TYPOGRAPHY 1 introduces typefaces in visual communication. The study focuses on the principles, anatomy and manipulating creatively the typefaces for visual communication purpose. The evolution of ancient writing to printed-typefaces and the art of calligraphy are explored for further understanding to be applied for graphic design items. VG101 - PHOTOGRAPHY 1 PHOTOGRAPHY 1 offers a basic photography with creative techniques. It includes the learning process on handling and camera operations. This course also covers the history and the development of photography from conventional to digital technology. All aspects of basic in photography are covered including technical and compositional know-how and skills. VG203 - DIGITAL ILLUSTRATION DIGITAL ILLUSTRATION covers the techniques of digitalization on illustration. Students will learn the techniques of digital illustration in raster and vector illustration. This course also provides the skills and techniques in digital approach through Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator software. This course also provides the history knowledge from previous artist at the era of Renaissance until 18 century. VI101 - ART HISTORY ART HISTORY is an overview of history of art starting from the Pre-Historic age until the twentieth century. It is an intensive study of the fundamentals and vocabulary of art focusing on the historical, cultural and stylistic context. Students are to explore various art styles, techniques, media and leading artists throughout the different art movements. VG205 - DESKTOP PUBLISHING DESKTOP PUBLISHING focuses on the study in desktop publishing design and the basic structural layout and the development of grid in the modern graphic design. Specific types of publishing software, especially Quark Xpress and In Design are practiced to produce desktop publishing layouts and learn the workflows of conventional and digital prepress production. BC101 - COMPUTER APPLICATION COMPUTER APPLICATION provides knowledge and skills to students relating to various types of computer systems and its application especially pertaining to hardware and software. This course also exposes students to different packages of software applications for word processor, spreadsheet, project management, presentation and internet. The students will also have opportunity to manipulate and create a variety of techniques and styles to produce documents, spreadsheets, charts and presentations. This course emphasizes on the practical aspects of using computer applications. 14 VG302 - INTERACTIVE MEDIA INTERACTIVE MEDIA emphasizes on interactivity techniques and composition. Besides providing a comprehensive explanation of the meaning and the content of multimedia, students also have the opportunity to learn methods of organizing content and designing interfaces. The products of interactive CDROM for variety purposes content are to be created as the students’ final project. VG502 - PACKAGING DESIGN PAKAGING DESIGN focuses on the creative aspects of combining the application of graphic and packaging in the creation of product identity for the purpose of selling. Visual communication skills, design principles and processes are emphasized in producing product packaging and labelling. Economical, practical and visual attractive products identities are the key aspects in packaging design. VG304 - CORPORATE IDENTITY DESIGN CORPORATE IDENTITY DESIGN covers a research on visual potential of words and symbols into creating corporate identities and images for business communication. Students are exposed to research methodology, specifically on companies’ services so that they have full understanding of the functions and identity of a designed logo. VG504 - MOTION GRAPHIC MULTIMEDIA/MOTION GRAPHIC exposes students to the applications used in industry for developing motions for broadcast identification, opening titles, as well as the production of animated graphics. The manipulation of typography, illustrations and images will be emphasized following the latest trends. Students are required to produce series of motion graphics for variety purposes content as their project. VG301 - TYPOGRAPHY 2 TYPOGRAPHY 2 is an extended study of TYPOGRAPHY 1, cover an experiment of letterforms in visual communication. The study focuses on typography as form, typographic principles, text organization and hierarchy, legibility and readability and letter spacing. Throughout the term, an exploration in various aspects of digital typography is apply to improving the quality of information and communication. VG303 - ADVERTISING 1 ADVERTISING 1 introduces the basic process of producing an advertisement for products or services. This course provides the fundamental skills which are needed in creating advertisements. It also looks into the definition and analyses the different functions of advertisement. Various design skills and advertising ethics are used in creating different types of advertisement. AW101 - OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH 1 OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH 1 is designed to impart understanding of the basic of safety and health in workplace setting. This course presents aspects of occupational safety and health, which are essential for employees to practise safe and healthy environment, resulting in less hazards at the workplace. Emphasis is placed on the understanding of regulations, OSH management, accident prevention and occupational First -Aid methods. VG501 - WEB DESIGN WEB DESIGN exposes students to the applications and process used for developing web page. The manipulation of image, content and latest web design trend will be emphasized. User interface design principle and structuring information method are introduced for better understanding and preparation to the web design process. . VG503 - ADVERTISING 2 ADVERTISING 2 is an extended study from ADVERTISING 1. This course exposes students to the online advertising. In addition, it also distinguishes the advertisement space, colour requirements and specification suitable for interactive media. Unique Selling Proposition (USP) and Emotional Selling Proposition (ESP) are introduced for better understanding and preparation to the design process. The students also reinforce with basic copywriting skills. VV501 - EVENT MANAGEMENT EVENT MANAGEMENT exposes students to the special event management knowledge and emphasizes special event management skills to student. They are also trained in cooperative manner within teams and coorganizers besides handling challenging task as planning, managing, promoting and carrying out special events for showcasing at the end of semester 15
