Pêches et Océans Canada The need for marketing and better co-operation between provinces and fishers, Francis Morrissey, manager of Tignish Fisheries Co-op Crew Member Lost Overboard! Fishing Vessel Silver Angel Charlesville Fisheries Ltd, Ray Belliveau, Owner, Charlesville Fisheries Ltd. Fishing garbage: Where does it go? Clean Nova Scotia The Navigator Magazine 2014 Fish Canada Workboat Canada Show Presentations & Seminars The Need For Marketing And Better Co-Operation Between Provinces And Fishers First I am a fisherman that fishes in LFA 24. I sat on the board of directors for 19 years before being asked to sit as manager of Tignish Fisheries Co-op. I am vice president of the Western Gulf Fishermen’s Association, a past board member of the PEIFA, past chairman of area 24 advisory board, president of the Sea Cow Pond Harbor Authority, and president of the Tignish Minor Hockey Association. What I will try to speak on will be the need for marketing and better co-operation between other provinces and fishers. Also how we as an industry, help the older fishers leave the fishery and get younger people to enter. Duration: 30 minutes Speaker: Francis Morrissey, manager of Tignish Fisheries Co-op Crew Member Lost Overboard! Fishing Vessel Silver Angel Charlesville Fisheries Ltd On May 3rd, 2011, Ray Belliveau, owner of Charlesville Fisheries, arrived at office at 7:30 am as usual and noticed that the Silver Angel was not tied up to the wharf as expected. This presentation is regarding the loss overboard of fisherman Douglas “Ward” Wickens, and will discuss what happened on that day and the effect of tragedy upon the company, crew, community and family. Also discussed will be the impact on the employer; what lessons were learned, and the steps taken to prevent further loss of life. Duration: 25 minutes Speaker: Ray Belliveau, Owner, Charlesville Fisheries Ltd. Making Safety the New Tradition in a Traditional Fishing Industry When an entire industry is known for its history of tragedy, loss of life, acceptance of risk and staunch tradition, it can be a considerable challenge to even begin to instill a vision of a culture focused on awareness and prevention. This session will look at the initiatives and strategies in an attempt to tackle safety in the NS fishing industry. The experience will be of interest to anyone who intends to command the slow boat of change against the tides of resistance. Duration: 25 minutes Speaker: Stewart Franck, CRSP The Navigator Magazine 2014 Fish Canada Workboat Canada Show 27 2014 Fish Canada Workboat Canada Show Presentations & Seminars Getting Recognized in Marine Trades During this presentation, jobs in the marine industry will be a focus. The Nova Scotia Boatbuilders Association offers two apprenticeship programs: Boat Builder & Marine Service Technician. We will highlight the process of becoming an apprentice and the different tasks that are involved in the everyday life of either a boat builder or marine service tech. Duration: 35-45 minutes Speakers: Christian O’Neill & Chip Dickison. Fishing Garbage: Where Does It Go? Clean Nova Scotia’s Ship to Shore program is screening a 15minute documentary film showcasing waste management practices of Nova Scotia fishermen and harbours. Hear from fishermen and industry members on the challenges of managing garbage, and the improvements that have taken place in the industry. Q & A to follow. Duration: 25 minutes Speaker: Stewart Franck, CRSP Clean Nova Scotia is a registered charity that provides individuals and communities with the means, knowledge, and opportunity to make responsible environmental choices, through many educational programs, services, and resources. The Ship to Shore program is made possible through the support of our dedicated funders: Fisheries and Oceans Small Craft Harbours, Canadian Plastics Industry Association, Resource Recovery Fund Board, Nova Scotia Environment 28 2014 Fish Canada Workboat Canada Show The Navigator Magazine 2014 Fish Canada Workboat Canada Show Presentations & Seminars Tracking Trends In Recruitment Lobsters And Lobster Quality: How We Are Helping Your Fishery Collaboration between fishermen and scientists is the cornerstone of the Fishermen and Scientists Research Society (FSRS). Fishermen participate in collaborative initiatives as 'scientists on the water'. The data collected for the various FSRS lobster sampling projects benefit the lobster industry and helps promote the long-term sustainability of our marine resources. Fishermen have participated in a “hands on” approach with at-sea sampling, recording data vital to understanding lobster and the effects of their environment on their development and quality. The data collected track trends in recruitment sized lobsters along the Scotian-Fundy coast, and determine the average quality of lobster in sampling areas using the lobsters' blood protein levels and moult stage. Armed with this information on recruitment and quality trends, fishermen can better determine when and where to fish, allowing for better quality lobster going to market, while lowering expenses and promoting sustainability of the fishery. Duration: 20 minutes Speaker: Shannon Scott-Tibbetts How The National Online Licensing System Now Replaces Traditional Services. Fisheries and Oceans Canada How the national online licensing system now replaces traditional services for a significant portion of licensing transactions, including licence renewals, payments and printing. Duration: 20 minutes Speaker: TBD Comment Le Système National D’émission De Permis En Ligne Remplace Maintenant Les Services Traditionnels. Pêches et Océans Canada Comment le système national d'émission de permis en ligne remplace maintenant le service traditionnel pour une grande partie des transactions liées aux permis, tel que le renouvellement, le paiement et l'impression des permis.
