Annual Dinner Meeting & Awards
At the January Burlington Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner meeting, an awards
presentation took place saluting the efforts of individuals and businesses.
Day to day at the BACC we rely on our volunteer efforts to achieve many of our goals. These awards
offer us a way to recognize just a small portion of the work that improves the fulfillment of our mission
and benefits Burlington and this region of our State.
The BACC was honored to offer special thanks with the presentation of the following awards –
Service Award, Friend of Burlington Award, Volunteer of the Year and the Presidents Award.
President’s Award
Burlington Glass
The President’s Award is given
to a member of the community who
demonstrates outstanding dedication
and extraordinary effort on behalf of the
chamber and community.
The Burlington Chamber President,
Jim Webley, was honored to present
this year’s President’s Award to Karen
& Mark Caliva and Jennie Amborn.
Everyone here knows this team at
Burlington Glass and their outstanding
commitment to our community that is
their home. There is never any hesitation
when you call on them to help. Their
support and generosity to the Chamber
and the Ambassador Club continually
astound us. Readily offering help on the
Auction Committee and at the Golf
Outing and continuing her service to our
Chamber and Community, Jennie is also
a Chamber Ambassador. Mark, Karen
and Jennie – please accept our deepest
heartfelt thanks!
Volunteer of the Year
Shelly Leverenz
The Volunteer of the Year Award is
awarded to a member of the community
who has volunteered the most time and
energy on behalf of the Chamber.
BACC was honored to present
the Volunteer of the Year Award to
PAGE 2
Shelly Leverenz. Compassionate and
thoughtful, Shelly’s support extends far
beyond the Chamber. For years she
has coordinated Light up the Night to
benefit our retail community, hosted a
community wide food drive for Love,
served on many board of directors
including ours, extended herself above
and beyond for schools and service
organizations and more --- without any
thought to recognition. Burlington is
blessed to have this wonderful volunteer!
MaHAlo, Shelly!
Service Award
Don Vande Sand
The Service Award is presented
to recognize the member of the
community who has helped at the
Chamber of Commerce throughout
this year and many others.
The Burlington Chamber was
pleased to present the Service Award to
Don Vande Sand. Don is an amazing
historian and writer and has helped the
Chamber for many years. Although
he shares his gift “behind the scenes”,
it is one that the Chamber and our
Burlington Community LOVE. Each
month Don brings Burlington history
to life in Discover the Treasures with
his informative REMEMBER WHEN
articles and photos. Don’s commitment
and service throughout the years to the
Chamber and to the community and
the Burlington Historical Society are
the reasons that we are honoring him
tonight. With sincere gratitude for all
you have done, Thank you, Don!
Friend of Burlington
Craig Faust
The Friend of Burlington Award honors
anyone who has made a significant and
notable contribution to our community,
in a manner that exemplifies leadership,
community service, and involvement.
The Chamber was pleased to present
the Friend of Burlington Award to
Craig Faust. Craig is equally committed
to the community of Burlington, our
Chamber and many local organizations.
His kindness and generosity have
enabled us to continue sharing “Discover
the Treasures” of our community and
beyond. Your help is appreciated more
than words can say.
We humbly extend this honor to our
Friend of Burlington. Thank you, Craig!
CONGRATULATIONS
to our Raffle winners
Barb Hintz (Treasure Chest)
Joe Mangelsdorf (Gun Raffle)
Bill Vrchota (Travel Voucher)
We would also like to thank our Auction Committee and volunteers. Thank
you for your time and dedication to this event. Jennie Amborn, Alison
Bozman, Barb Hintz and Georgia Schuch.
Our behind the scene volunteers: Chandler Agnes, Kayla Anderson,
Dave Kmetz, Jerry Koch, Karen Kuenhold, Pat Lawrence, Tom Lebak, Kurt
Leverenz, Shelly Leverenz, David Schwartz, Teri Smetana and Larry Staton.

there’s a holiday created to celebrate America’s favorites – Chocolate and Chocolate! From
traditional to unique and versatile, get ready to celebrate!
Cupid will be turning Chocolate City USA into a lover’s lane this month. Celebrate with

Or, celebrate with Mike, Mike, Mark, Karl, & Eric (and Frank) on February 19 at “That’s
Amore”. You’ll love our all-inclusive dinner from the moment you step in. A five course,
wine-paired dinner prepared by area Executive Chefs will wow you throughout the evening
at Veteran’s Terrace. Dinner, wine, entertainment and hosted bar isn’t all! You’ll also enjoy
cocktails beginning at 5:30 pm and hors d’oeuvres before sitting down to dinner at 6:30 pm.

(or does that green thing poking through the snow mean something?) by Tom Lebak
Ancient Romans as well as
Scandinavians and the inhabitants of
Northern Europe viewed the Winter
Solstice with a degree of foreboding
because of the long hours of darkness.
Yet, they also knew that from that
point forward daylight grew longer

harbingers of Spring may not be as
prosaic as those of our ancestors but
our anticipation and longing for the
growing season is no less real. In

hundred vendors have participated and
many are repeat participants. Clearly,
Burlington merchants in the home
improvement and gardening business
have seen the value in participating in
this event.
This article would be remiss if it
did not mention that the Home and
Garden Show is also a great time and
a fun way to get out of the house as
(hopefully) Winter begins to loosen
its icy grip. Of course, this is an
event in Chocolate City so the sweet
stuff must be around somewhere.
Somewhere? More like everywhere
because this is also the annual
Chocolate Extravaganza! Bakers will
be entering their favorite chocolate
creations for judging. Area celebrities
will be squaring off in the cupcake
decorating contest. Plus, there will be
food vendors on hand so you do not go
hungry.
So, here is your chance to get out
of the house, do some home planning,
hang out with some characters like
Morsel the Moose and maybe a
wandering chocolate chip cookie or
other costumed character and shake
off the last remnants of winter. Sounds
like a cure for cabin fever to me!

Artist of the Month

Twin Lakes, WI 53181
Pamela McCaslin- Dancing Flower Studio
Raised in central Illinois, I developed an appreciation for nature with
the surrounding hills and winding river. I would make frequent visits to
metropolitan cities to view museums and see broadway shows. My interest
in art began in the studio of an artist near by and then I took fine art courses
at Cardinal Stritch- San Domino Studio under the watchful eye of the late
Sr. Thomasita Fessler. However, I became an Interior Designer, (NSID)
working in Chicago. After publishing my children’s school newspaper in a
northern suburb of Chicago, I studied computer design classes. Migrating
to Wisconsin, I rekindled my passion for the arts and with my previous
eduation, I began taking classes at Geneva Lake Art Association. I belong to
a Burlington Art Group called the Gathering.
As an artist, my frequent subject is the world of nature as it seizes our
attention when we least expect it.. in the winds of life. Integrating fin arts,
décor colors and graphics, I use water soluable paint in ink on various paper
such as watercolor, board and Japanese Yupo ( plastic fiber the repels water)
incorporating text at times. I also create collage cards incorporating papers,
stamps and fibers.
“The Gathering” is an informal group of local artists who meet weekly in
a friendly, casual atmosphere which encourages creativity. We welcome new
participants with all levels of ability of artistic endeavor. Come with your
work and join in our Tuesday Gatherings. The meetings are Tuesdays at St.
John the Divine Episcopal Church, 216 E. Chandler Blvd. from 12:30-3pm.

When
Because of space limitations, the January edition
of Remember When . . . – especially the size of the
photos – was less than ideal. Accordingly, we are
repeating the January article in its entirety. A Bird’s-EyeView
Submitted by Burlington Historical
Society Museum, located at 232 N.
Perkins Blvd. Open Sunday afternoons 1
to 4 pm. 262-767-2884.
www.burlingtonhistory.org.
These photos are only about seven
months old but the features they
show will be recognized by current
Burlington residents and treasured by
future Burlington residents. The photos
were taken from a hobby aircraft flown
by Burlington Historical Society
president Dennis Tully near Echo Park
in July 2015.
The first photo (at right) shows part
of Echo Lake above the dam and the
structures along North Pine Street
near the lakeshore, including the large
grain handling facilities right of center.
Visible on the horizon are the steeple
of St. Mary’s church and the Origen
Street and Lewis Street water towers.
Other landmarks in the photo include
St. Charles church and school (center);
the Bumper to Bumper building at the
corner of N. Pine and Mill streets (left
of center); the former railroad depot,
now owned by the Canadian National
Railroad; and the Riverview Village

Apartments (far right).
The photo on top shows a major
portion of Burlington’s downtown and
adjacent areas. Shown at the lower
center is the intersection of North
Pine Street and Milwaukee Avenue.
Buildings on three of the four corners
of that intersection include Fred’s
Parkview, the former Krein’s Color
Bar, and El Burrito Loco Mexican
restaurant.
On the fourth corner (bottom
center) is a portion of the Bear Realty
parking lot. The Chase Bank building
on the corner of Pine and Chestnut
streets is shown left of center in the
same block as the former SchuetteDaniels furniture store and Flippy’s
restaurant at the corner of Washington
Street.
Among the buildings along
Milwaukee Avenue, which angles
upward toward the right side of the
photo, can be seen the Oldenburg
Insurance building, the former
Coach’s Sports Bar and Grill, Hounds
Detectors and Hobbies, the Plaza
Theatre, and the law offices of Lloyd,
Phenicie, Lynch, & Kelly. Beyond
Kane Street are the buildings of
Town Bank and the Plymouth
Congregational-UCC church. St.
FEBRUARY 2016
Mary’s church is shown in the upper
right corner.
Other landmarks in the photo
include the telephone company
building on Washington Street,
Fidelity Title Company at the corner
of Washington and Kane streets, the
Church of the Nazarene (at upper
center), and the Historical Society
building (left of center in the upper
part of the photo).
