The Forum, which was built to celebrate the
Millennium, is free to enter and is open seven days
a week*. The building is in the centre of Norwich
and is home to the UK’s busiest public library, Cafe
Bar Marzano and Pizza Express, a spacious Atrium for
exhibitions and events, The Forum shop by Jarrold, the
Gallery and the Auditorium. BBC East has its HQ here,
as does MINT, a charity which helps young people
find work.

The Forum is run by an independent,
self-financing charity, The Forum Trust,
which receives no public money. The Trust
is committed to maintaining The Forum as a

projects for the benefit of the whole community,

What is your role at the Norfolk and
Norwich Millennium Library?
As Second Floor Manager, I am responsible for
Norfolk Heritage Centre and Norwich Business
Library together with their associated events,
as well as music sets, playsets and Inter Library
Loans. I also duty manage the whole library
on a rota basis, so I can be found on the other
floors regularly too.
Have you always been interested in
heritage and business?
When I was eight my dad took me to see the
family vault at Brockdish. On it, someone had
carved my name – then Elizabeth Walne – and
I was hooked. Who was she? How was her life
different to mine, more than 250 years later?
Still, I never thought my interests would
become part of my day job. I worked in
music retail, planning, sustainability and even
emergency planning before moving into
libraries. It wasn’t until a role at Norfolk Record
Office arose, while I was getting an MSc in
Geneaological, Palaeographic and Heraldic
Studies in my own time, that working with
heritage became a reality. Two years ago I took
up the second floor role and the other aspects
of the job, including leading a large team and
taking on the Business Library, have brought
new and exciting challenges. In a role like this
you never stop learning new things.
What do you find most interesting
about your job?
I adore our special collections – books up to
800 years old, beautifully bound and smelling
wonderful – ephemera (from Victorian moral
broadsides to traders’ business cards) and
collections of probate material, which also
date back about 800 years. Being able to
support people reading old handwriting is a
particular pleasure.
However, the most interesting thing about
my role is never knowing what’s coming next.
In the five years I have worked here new
questions have always been forthcoming –
from relatively common things like house
history and starting a business to supporting
all sorts of weird and wonderful research
enquiries relating to anything under the sun!
Is the role of libraries changing?
Yes, I think so. We are incredibly lucky to have
such a fantastic library service and record
office in Norfolk, but this is a time of great
change for us and has been for some time.
The old idea of libraries being just about
books is very much out of date. We work
not just to make books and internet facilities
and subscriptions available, but to support
healthy living, reduce social isolation, help start
businesses, support vulnerable people in our
communities, give children a great start in life
and promote community cohesion. We put on
lots of events – from gigs to workshops – and
celebrate not just Norfolk’s past, but its future.
What are you currently reading?
Inevitably, I read a great deal of non-fiction, as
I write a blog and my own non-fiction outside
work. However, I do love some escapism and
must admit that I am indulging in the King’s
Curse by Philippa Gregory at the moment. I
don’t always read historical fiction, but I guess
it’s a natural progression.

Gallery, watch “live from the hide” footage
of waders from Cley Marshes and terns from
Ranworth Broad and see films of the species you
could attract in your garden.
The beauty of Norfolk’s nature will be
brought into the heart of the city by means of a
photographic trail through the central shopping
streets of Norwich. Photographic Artist, Richard
Osbourne’s stunning images of NWT nature
reserves will be exhibited in shop windows as part
of a two week wildlife celebration encouraging
people to get back in touch with wildlife. The trail
leaflet will be available here at The Forum. Norwich
Castle Museum also joins in the wildlife themed
fun with a special one-day-only exhibition on
1920s natural history on Saturday 4 June.

For 17 days each May, Norfolk & Norwich Festival
transform the city and county with a programme of
world class theatre, dance, music, literature and circus.
This year the Free Outdoor Programme opens at The
Forum with Flat (Fri 13 & Sat 14 May) an amazing aerial
spectacle that sees an apartment suspended from
the front of the building. Watch from below as one
man climbs, falls and leaps around his home; video
animation constantly transforms the room he inhabits,
creating a breathtaking show.
The following weekend Aurora Orchestra will pop-up
outside The Forum on Sun 22 May with excerpts from
Beethoven’s much loved Symphony No. 5.
Plus there are a whole range of exciting premieres,
concerts, free events and more taking place
throughout the Festival.

Studios. From 12 - 17 April,
The Forum hosts an exhibition
showcasing the work created by
the vast range of artists taking
part in the Open Studios scheme,
which runs from 28 May - 12
June. Artists from every corner of
the county are brought together
under one roof to celebrate the
vibrancy of visual arts in Norfolk.
This exhibition is a fantastic
opportunity for visitors to enjoy
jewellery, printmaking, ceramics,
textiles, photography, glasswork
and lots more. Much of the work

FOODIE FUN
Norwich Food & Drink Festival 2016
Sun 19 Jun 10am - 5pm
A sumptuous showcase and celebration of Norfolk’s finest food
and drink is on the menu at The Forum this Father’s Day. Founded
twelve years ago, this year’s event promises to be bigger and better
than ever as it returns to its original home at The Forum.
In an exciting development for 2016, and to accommodate the
incredible growth and popularity of the festival, the event is
spilling over onto St Peter’s Street in front of City Hall, to host the
ever-popular Battle of the Bangers.
The festival promises a packed programme including local beers,
ales and spirits in the Adnams beer garden, a producers’ village
packed full of delicious local food and drink, Feast on the Street,
a cookery demonstration theatre featuring some of the county’s
best loved and best known chefs, plus live music and children’s
entertainment.
The Battle of the Bangers offers visitors the chance to sample
mouth-watering sausages from 10 butchers battling it out to be
crowned winner after voting by judges and members of the public.
The Norwich Food & Drink Festival is free to attend and is packed

British Art Show 8

British Art Show 8, the UK’s
most ambitious and influential
series of exhibitions of British
contemporary art, is opening
in Norwich on Friday 24 June.
Organised every five years by the
Hayward Gallery as part of the
Hayward Touring programme,
this is the first time the event has
been hosted in the East of England
and comes hot on the heels of
highly successful runs in Leeds and
Edinburgh.
Norwich University of the Arts
(NUA) has been selected along with
Norwich Castle Museum and Art
Gallery and The Forum to host the
show in Norwich. The work will be
exhibited in NUA campus buildings
on St Georges Street and the East
GalleryNUA. East Anglian audiences
will be particularly interested to
see magnificent and atmospheric
sea paintings by NUA alumni
Jessica Warboys, who commutes
between Suffolk and Berlin, works
by Ryan Gander, who divides his
time between the Suffolk coast and
London, and Great Yarmouth based
artist Alan Kane.
Professor John Last, ViceChancellor at NUA, says: “NUA
is privileged to be co-partner for
Hayward Touring in bringing this
project to fruition. It presents a
fantastic opportunity for everyone
in the region to experience this
major national exhibition of
contemporary art and helps to
consolidate and reaffirm the city’s
growing reputation for hosting
cutting-edge contemporary
shows.”

across three venues in Norwich in

Young musicians from Buckinghamshire County
Youth Orchestra (BCYO) visit The Forum in June as
part of a busy weekend of music making in Norfolk.
Performing Sibelius’ Symphony No. 5, excerpts from
both Romeo and Juliet suites by Prokofiev and John
Adams’ Short Ride in a Fast Machine, the orchestra’s
visit to Norfolk includes concerts at The Forum, South
Creake and Great Yarmouth.
BCYO offers the best orchestral players in
Buckinghamshire, aged between 13 and 20, the
opportunity to work together regularly and perform
exciting and challenging repertoire in venues at
home and abroad. After a very successful tour
to Budapest in summer 2015, the orchestra has
expanded, and performed Mahler’s Symphony No.1
in February to enthusiastic audiences in venues
in Amersham and High Wycombe. The orchestra’s
next ambitious project is a hopeful visit to Reykjavik,
Iceland, in summer 2017.
BCYO is part of the Buckinghamshire Learning
Trust (BLT) and supports all educational settings
and the community to provide an outstanding
education for all young people. BLT Music is also the
core organisation of the Buckinghamshire Music
