The Keeping the community informed Municipal Scoop Councillor’s Corner Fall is an exciting time as students return to school and resume their studies and extra curricular activities. Many of us appreciate the structure that school represents after the more relaxed summer schedule and the new opportunities that come with a new school year, new teachers, new classes, and of course new school supplies. Fall is also an important time for the Town of Vegreville as our county neighbours are busy haying and combining, trying to harvest their fields while the weather is both dry and warm. With plenty of garden produce, there are pickles to make and soup to freeze so fall is a busy time of finishing projects and starting others. Council and administration resumes a "back-to-school schedule" with more meetings and conferences over the next months leading up to 2017 budget planning. We enjoyed time with family and friends over the summer, while our staff and contractors have been busy working on various capital works projects. For example, the North Parkway Drainage project, designed for flood mitigation and water diversion, is complete. The 52 Street construction is a cast iron water line replacement with sanitary and storm sewer replacements and new asphalt, as well as sidewalks replacement where needed, has seen some rain delays but that section of road will soon be finished. Painted crosswalks, updated walking trail surfaces, and new ice at the arena are visible evidence of the "homework" and updates that town staff do continuously to keep our facilities looking fresh. Other projects underway are a Facility Master Plan, that will take an inventory of all Town of Vegreville building assets, assess their usage and expected lifespan to plan for future expenditures. Another project that has been top of mind is the RCMP barracks construction: Town officials will meet with architects this week to discuss the time frame and building requirements for this long anticipated project. One last council initiative I draw attention to is the Business Revitalization Program. The Economic Development and Tourism Board presented an incentive to council in 2015 designed for either downtown building owners or renters to make visual improvements to their stores. Based on the success of the program last year, council supports this incentive again and encourages business owners to participate. Applications can be made to ecdev@vegreville.com and inquiries can be directed to the Economic Development Office at 780-632-3891. Enjoy the warm days and crisp evenings of fall and good luck completing your fall projects! Council is literally sharpening their pencils and getting to work on some big assignments too. Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years,” Wishing all the farmers and farming community a safe and prosperous season NFPA's survey data shows that the public has many misconceptions about smoke alarms, which may put them at increased risk in the event of a home fire. For example, only a small percentage of people know how old their smoke alarms are, or how often they need to be replaced. As a result of those and related findings, we're addressing smoke alarm replacement this year with a focus on these key messages: · Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years. ·Make sure you know how old all the smoke alarms are in your home. · To find out how old a smoke alarm is, look at the date of manufacture on the back of the alarm; the alarm should be replaced 10 years from that date.
