Everyday Miracles at Saint Francis
As you may know, MIRACLES is our annual celebratory
gala where members of our community, like you, come
together in support of Saint Francis. We are deeply grateful
for that support which over the past 24 years has raised
more than $14 million for Hospital initiatives.
It seems appropriate, then, to take a moment now to
consider the meaning of the word, “miracle.” The birth of a
baby, a remission diagnosis for a cancer patient, the ability to
walk again for a rehabilitation patient, these are just some of
the marvels that we are so fortunate to share each day at
Saint Francis.
I am honored to be associated with an organization
where we create and experience miracles. Just recently I had
the opportunity to witness one of these Saint Francis
miracles first-hand.
This past October, our Joyce D. and Andrew J. Mandell
Center for Comprehensive Multiple Sclerosis Care and
Neuroscience Research welcomed world-renowned
immunologist, Nathan Karin, Ph.D. His research in cell
migration led to the development of Tysabri, a leading drug
for multiple sclerosis.
We took this opportunity to introduce Dr. Karin to
several of our patients who, together with Tysabri treatments
and the phenomenal therapy expertise of our Mandell MS
Center staff, have greatly benefited from this drug. One very
special patient, whom I had the honor of meeting, went
from being quadriplegic in January to using a wheelchair,
then a walker, to full functionality of his limbs by late
summer.
This is just one example of the many miracles
performed at Saint Francis each and every day.
Underpinning this care are the numerous awards and
recognitions that we earned over the past year for our
outstanding quality and patient safety initiatives:
• One of two Connecticut hospitals to receive the
highest ranking available by Consumer Reports
2
Health Ratings Center in their “Best Hospitals for
Surgery” report. Of the almost 2,500 hospitals rated,
Saint Francis was also named among the top five
hospitals in the United States for safest knee and hip
replacement surgeries.
• Ranked #1 in Connecticut in 24 clinical and surgical
areas by CareChex®, for patient safety and medical
excellence achievements.
• For the fourth consecutive year, Saint Francis received
an “A” rating Hospital Safety Score℠ from the
Leapfrog Group. The Hospital Safety Score℠ grades
hospitals on their overall performance in keeping
patients safe from harm and preventable errors.
• Saint Francis was recognized for clinical excellence by
Healthgrades, which ranked the Hospital among the
top 5% nationally in Coronary Interventional
Procedures, Overall Orthopedic Services, and, for the
second year in a row, Joint Replacement; and the top
10% for Spine Surgery.
All of these achievements over the past year, plus the
many more not mentioned, are examples of how we
internalize our Mission and Core Values daily by putting the
patient at the center of our universe.
In the pages that follow, you will learn more about these
miraculous stories, giving you an opportunity to celebrate
the miracles that we are so fortunate to be a part of.
These efforts would not be possible without your
continued support to our Hospital and the community we
appreciatively serve. Thank you for helping to make our

We are proud of what you
have been able to help us
accomplish this year — most
notably, the millions raised to
complete the construction of
the new Comprehensive
Women’s Health Center which
opened in October. The
ribbon-cutting ceremony was
a true celebration of our
collective spirit to serve our
community with excellence and
compassion.
The corporate community
also played a vital role in helping us reach new
heights this year. Income from our premiere events
exceeded $1 million. SWING for Saint Francis and
Mount Sinai Rehabilitation Golf Classic joined
forces to form one fantastic event called ‘SWING’!
More than 350 golfers participated and $225,000 was
raised to support Nursing Education and our
Adaptive Rowing Program. Miracles XXIV once
again exceeded our expectations with an enthusiastic
and expansive crowd. Our beneficiary, which was the
Comprehensive Women’s Health Center, attracted
large corporate support including four sponsorships
of $50,000 each.
In the fall, we welcomed 34 new members into
our Valencia Society. This special event was hosted by
Board Member Victor Dowling and his wife Jody at
their beautiful home in West Hartford. Since 1997,
the Valencia Society has grown to more than 400
individuals whose estate plans include Saint Francis.
This year we were blessed to receive over $620,000 in
contributions from various estates.
We would also like to extend our gratitude to the
many individuals and families
who held Third-Party Events
on behalf of Saint Francis.
These events are labors of love
organized by grateful patients
and their families who want to
show their appreciation for the
extraordinary care they
received at Saint Francis. This
year more than $220,000 was
raised by these dedicated
individuals.
On behalf of the entire
Foundation team, I would like
to personally thank you for all that you have done to
help us succeed. It is due to your commitment and
dedication that we have been able to play a vital role
in providing the very best care to our community.

reflect on my lifelong experience with Saint Francis.
This Hospital has been a part of my life as much as
my church, my family and my friends. Every day I
am reminded why — the care offered here is like
no other. The staff that works here provides

the Foundation has had an extraordinary impact on
patients and families in our community and we owe
that to you, our donors.

Now Open!
On November 2, 2013, we celebrated the
official opening of the Comprehensive Women’s
Health Center at Saint Francis. The celebration
included ribbon cuttings, blessings, photographs
and champagne toasts to thank all of the donors,
staff and contractors who made this three-year
adventure come to fruition. Guests were treated
to tours, health assessments, integrative
medicine therapies and information on all of the
services that are available to the women of the
Greater Hartford Community.

At the Auxiliary Annual Meeting, Antoinette Carrabba presented a
check for $524,727 to John Rodis, M.D., Executive Vice President,

McDonough, Jr., President, Saint Francis Foundation. This gift is a
portion of their $5 million pledge to the Hospital and their $1.5 million
commitment to the Women’s Center.

The Executive Committee of the Auxiliary graciously
represented all Auxilians at the ribbon cutting
ceremony and blessing.

The lead gift to the Women’s Center was donated by
the strongest ally of the Hospital, the Auxiliary. For
over 85 years this group of incredible women and
men continue to volunteer their time and financial
resources, all in support of Saint Francis. It was a
unanimous decision to donate $1,500,000 to this
project. In honor of their generosity the lobby was
named The Women’s Auxiliary Lobby.

Friends of Stan Alfeld Give $1 Million in Support of the
Comprehensive Women’s Health Center
Stanley F. Alfeld founded Landmark Partners
in 1984 and spent 20 years building a globally
recognized alternative investment management
firm specializing in the acquisition of private
equity and real estate limited partnerships.
Stan’s generosity and commitment to the
community at large resulted in his creation of a
firm-wide community giving program which
Saint Francis, and other organizations have
benefitted from enormously.

help create The Comprehensive Women’s
Health Center. The first gift made to the Center was from Stan’s widow, Marilyn Alfeld, who strongly believes
that Stan would have wanted to support this endeavor. As a Saint Francis Care and Foundation board member, he
was involved with many such projects and the fundraising associated with them. Margaret Griner, the widow of
one of Stan’s partners, made a substantial contribution in memory of her late husband, John Griner. Landmark
Partners, its partners and associates made the lead gift. Francisco L. Borges, Chairman and Managing Partner,
said “There could not be a more suitable tribute to Stan’s leadership, generosity and commitment to others.”
Stan’s family, associates and friends were all in attendance for the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Dr. and Mrs. Surendra Chawla’s gift to The Center was made in honor of
Ranjana Chawla’s mother and thus, this high-tech conference room has
been named The Vidya Seth Lifelong Learning Center.

As soon as the Women’s Center plans were
announced, the Foundation created a unique
approach for people to combine their gifts for
a naming opportunity. The idea took off
immediately, resulting in 16 giving circles with
over 100 members and $1,000,000 in donations.
Of special note, several individuals and families
gave $100,000 each to establish the Serenity
Boutique donated by Rosemary C. Lombardo,
the Vidya Seth Lifelong Learning Center
donated by Dr. and Mrs. Surendra Chawla and
the Fox and Gordon Family Staff Lounge. Also,
some longstanding corporate partners generously
donated gifts to create the Travelers
Championship Consultation Suite and the SBM
Charitable Foundation Waiting Room.

The Women’s Center is surrounded by the Dadlez Family Healing Garden and
dedicated in memory of Jeanne M. Ilvento, Eileen Dadlez’s mother. At the dedication it
was a beautiful fall day and many guests were able to gather in the garden. The
transformation of our prior Emergency Department to a state-of-the-art, one-of-a-kind
Comprehensive Women’s Health Center has now come full circle.

Saint Francis Connections
Elida Witthoeft was connected to Saint Francis
from her very beginning. Although she was born at
Saint Francis Hospital, it wasn’t our Hospital, but
one outside of Chicago. In 1998, Elida took a job in
Connecticut and moved to Unionville. She lost her
father in 1999, and her mother, Ruth, moved here in
2000. They’ve been roommates ever since. Together,
they have visited Saint Francis many times.
When Ruth broke her arm while visiting in
southern Connecticut, she told Elida she wanted to
go to Saint Francis, passing several Hospitals along
the way. Ruth owes her life to Dr. Allan Mayer, who
treated her cancer. When Elida needed gynecological
surgery, they knew where to turn. And a tribute gift
in honor of Dr. Mayer began their support of Saint
Francis and membership in the Bishop Tierney Society.
Most recently, Elida had hip replacement surgery
and a broken femur repaired at Saint Francis. Two
months later she walked into the new Comprehensive
Women’s Health Center with small assistance from a
cane and she and her mom were overwhelmed at the
beauty and expanse of services in the Center. Their
Ruth and Elida Witthoeft in the Dadlez Family Healing Garden
support of Saint Francis is because of the care they
received and their desire to ensure that those services
are available for all. They embody the goals of Bishop
Tierney — to serve all who need medical care — and
the mission of Saint Francis Care —compassionate
care and medical excellence for our community. We
are truly grateful for their continued support.

compared to 8.4% statewide. When an individual
becomes engaged with the Men’s Health Institute,
the nurse navigator first determines if they are likely
to qualify for Medicaid or Medicare and, if so, she
facilitates the process for the individual to complete
and submit the forms.
Another issue that the nurse navigator addresses
is the fact that many individuals from the target
population have a difficult time coordinating their
care between multiple physicians. Often, important
information is not communicated between physicians
and gaps result in a patient’s care or medications
interact with each other negatively. The nurse
navigator takes the lead in making sure that all
physicians who treat a specific patient are receiving
results of tests, lists of medications and information
on any procedures that are provided to the patient.
The Berkshire Bank Foundation grant will help fund
a nurse navigator who would work closely with the
current full time Men’s Health Institute/Center for
Health Equity nurse navigator coordinating the care
of patients.

In 2012, the Curtis D. Robinson Men’s Health
Institute became part of a new initiative of Saint
Francis Hospital, the Center for Health Equity. This
new Center was established to directly address the
health disparities that exist between uninsured and
underinsured individuals and families in the Hartford
area. “Health equity” means achieving the same levels
of healthcare quality, healthcare outcomes and health
status among all population groups, regardless of
social and demographic characteristics such as race,
ethnicity, language, gender and income. As a
component of the Center for Health Equity, the
Men’s Health Institute has additional resources and
staff to address the clinical, social and behavioral
health needs of the target population.
One important resource available to the Men’s
Health Institute is a nurse navigator. Many uninsured
and underinsured people have a hard time working
successfully with the healthcare system. For example,
the Hartford Department of Health and Human
Services estimates that 34,937 residents, or 28% of
Hartford’s population, have no medical insurance,

Main Entrance to Saint Francis
named “Peter G. Kelly Way”
Peter G. Kelly was honored for his generosity and
support of Saint Francis Care for over 40 years of service
with the naming of the main entranceway to Saint Francis
Hospital and Medical Center, “Peter G. Kelly Way.” Peter
has long been associated with Saint Francis, having served
on various Hospital boards since 1972. He has been a
corporator for Saint Francis since 1975, acting as a
goodwill ambassador, community advocate and volunteer.
He received the Saint Francis Care Spirit Award in 2000
in recognition of service that exemplifies the mission and
core values of the Hospital.
The ceremony took place on the lawn of 95
Woodland Street, across from the Hospital, on a
spectacular fall evening. It was the best keep secret in
Hartford. Peter was invited to the celebration under the
ruse that he would be honoring Dr. John Papandrea with a
special award. Peter arrived with speech in hand only to
find over 150 of his friends and family all gathered to
celebrate this special recognition.
With the help of his family and the City of Hartford,
Peter pulled down the cover on the sign and it was official.
The entrance to Saint Francis will forever honor the man
who has done so much for the Hospital and the residents
of Hartford.

Honoring the Past…Preparing for the Future.
On a lovely summer day, Lynn Rossini, Vice
President of the Saint Francis Foundation, met with
Irma Klein Schachter in her Westport home and
learned about her family’s rich history and
commitment to Mount Sinai Hospital.
Her father, Dr. Abraham Klein, was a primary
care physician and on staff at Mount Sinai. Her
mother, Rose Gilstein Klein, was a founding member
of the Mount Sinai Women’s Auxiliary, serving as
President and a lifetime member. Her brother, Mark
Klein, was born in the original Mount Sinai building
on Capitol Avenue.
Irma shared her desire to make a significant
contribution to honor her family’s ties to Mount
Sinai. By leaving a generous gift through her trust, it
was agreed that the Multi-Purpose Room, located on
the Mount Sinai campus, would be renamed the
Joe and Irma Schachter
Klein Conference Room. So, on a crisp October day,
with 36 of her friends and family around her, Irma
cut the ribbon and the celebration began. Dr. Robert
Krug, Director of the Mount Sinai campus, detailed
the history of the Hospital and the proposed
upgrades to the newly named room. It will become a
high-tech conference room used for internal and
external education with the ability to teleconference.
Irma’s incredible gift will honor her family’s
history with Mount Sinai Hospital as well as prepare
the rehabilitation campus for the ever-changing
healthcare needs. We are grateful to Irma and her
husband Joe for their trust in our ability to be good
stewards of their generosity.

The Annual Valencia Society Reception was hosted
by Jody and Vic Dowling at their lovely home in
West Hartford. Over 100 guests enjoyed the
incredible view of Hartford while listening to the
sounds of a Hall High School string trio and nibbling
on delectable treats prepared by River House
Catering.
This was a true celebration as the Society marked
the highest increase in membership in its history with
30 new friends. These new members include Hospital
staff and physicians, retired nurses and physicians,
and longtime friends who all agree that an investment
in the future of Saint Francis is vital for it to maintain
its mission of excellence and compassionate care.

SWING Golf and Tennis Outing
The 24th annual SWING Outing at Tumble Brook Country Club was another success and
benefitted both rehabilitation services at Mount Sinai and Nursing Education for Saint Francis
Care. In addition to morning and afternoon tennis and golf, guests enjoyed wonderful food,
snacks and contests, provided by our sponsors, throughout the day. We held both live and silent
auctions for the first time, and with Brad Davis as our emcee, they were both successful.

Comprehensive Women’s Health Center which opened
this past October, bringing our 24-year total to
$14,000,000. “Once again, our community has come
together to show its generous and inspiring support for
our efforts to provide the very best in healthcare services

Third Party Events
Throughout the year, a group of very special people
decide that they would like to do something for Saint
Francis. One way they can help is by hosting an
event that will raise funds for the Hospital. These
individuals are called Third-Party Event Hosts.
They are usually grateful patients or families,
students interested in giving back to their community
or fulfilling a community service requirement, or an
organization that is willing to donate their goods
and/or services.
This is a very creative group and here are a just a
few examples of how they have raised funds: cocktail
parties, golf tournaments, fashion shows, motorcycle
rides, lemonade stands, comedy nights and garden
tours. The proceeds from these events may be
directed to the Hospital’s greatest area of need or to
a specific area or program as designated by the event
organizer.
The event planning and expenses are the
responsibility of the individual hosts; however, the
Saint Francis Foundation will provide guidance on
the event, if needed.

by selling lemonade and yummy desserts they made
themselves. The event is in memory of Janice M.
Goyette and benefits the Cancer Center.

Spicy chef-entertainer Michael Bowen a/k/a “Bertha Mason” and employees from KBE Building
Corporation toast to “Laughter on the Brain,” the second annual comedy night hosted by the
Connecticut Brain Tumor Alliance. Bertha was able to auction that pie for almost $1,000 to add to
the more than $24,000 raised that night for the fight against brain tumors and to assist those
patients affected by them.

For fifteen years, the Karvoski Family has hosted a golf
tournament at Blue Fox Run in memory of their son and
brother, Paul. This year was their most successful ever.
Their efforts have allowed us to expand our Karvoski
Genetics Program to include both the Cancer Center
and the Comprehensive Women’s Health Center.

Notre Dame High School is known for a lot of things —
generosity and rising to the occasion are just two of them.
Both were on display recently as the Notre Dame
community supported a great cause.
October, as we all know, is Breast Cancer Awareness
Month. For the last two years, the Notre Dame Student
Council, under the direction of Mr. Glenn Xavier, has
designed a t-shirt and sold them to students, parents and
faculty. The proceeds were then donated to the Saint
Francis Foundation. Recently, Whitney Hubbs Dionne,
Director, Communications and Stewardship, traveled to
Notre Dame to receive their donation.
“It was with great pride that we invited Mrs. Dionne
to Notre Dame to present her with our donation for their
efforts,” said Mr. Xavier. “Over the last two years, we
have raised in excess of $8,000 to support their free
mammography campaign as well as their patient
assistance fund.”
“I am so proud of our entire community for their
generosity and support of these great causes,” said Notre
Dame President Br. James Branigan, C.S.C. “We pride
ourselves in educating the whole person and the
awareness, the caring, the support of our community
speaks volumes not only to what we are about but the
community we live in. It warms my heart knowing what
Notre Dame did for the greater good.”

What these two nine year-olds did next even

their bracelets for 25 cents and donate the

collected more than 400 pounds of candy during a postHalloween candy buy-back program. The Shriners
Hospitals for Children in Springfield also received candy

Five Saint Francis nurses recently received the Kathryn
M. Mullane Award at the 11th anniversary celebration.
Established through the Saint Francis Foundation by
members of the Mullane family in memory of Kathryn
M. Mullane, the awards are presented each year to nurses
who exhibit the qualities of compassion, sharing,
communication and collaboration, and who exceed the
needs and expectations of patients and their families.

Sing for Savage
The Sing for Savage Foundation was created by the
family of Tom Savage. And yes, it is that Savage Family.
Tom and his brothers and friends created The Savage
Brothers, a Hartford-based band, in 1984. This 6 piece
funkin’, rockin’ and rhythm group has performed over
4,000 shows plus 800 weddings. And for many years,
they honored their heritage by performing at the Annual
Irish Festival held in Glastonbury.
Now this family is coming together for a different
gig, to raise funds and support for Tom as he battles
cancer. The entire town of South Windsor, from the
middle school field hockey team to the local Dairy
Queen, everyone is selling t-shirts, bracelets and baked
goods to aide Tom with some of his medical bills.
Because they have been so successful, Tom’s daughters
wanted to give something back to Saint Francis for the
care their father has received from Dr. Joerg Rathmann
and Michelle Bender, R.N. They came to the hospital
with a big check for $4,000 and made a deposit to our
Patient Assistance Fund. This will allow our staff to help
patients meet financial needs allowing them to focus on
healing. The Sing for Savage team hopes this will be the
first of many donations.

Voices of Women of Color LLC (VOWOC), is a forprofit organization based in Hartford. Their vision is to
empower and encourage women of color by providing
them with leadership skills that lead to gainful
employment opportunities and civil activism in the public
and private sectors.
Voices held their first annual Trailblazers Awards
Ceremony in March to honor leaders in education, public
health and social justice. In addition, proceeds from the
event benefitted the Stroke Center at Saint Francis in
memory of Dr. Jean Ward. Jean was the former president
of the National Council of Negro Women and a longtime
community advocate. She worked long and hard for
causes that
support women
of color. The
