"In a year when most nonprofit organizations have fallen short of fundraising goals , we have been most fortunate in not only meeting our ambitious goal, but in surpassing it," he continued. The 1992 fund drive goal of $300,000 was set by Fund Drive Chairman Joel Ames and Honorary Fund Drive Chairman Ray Jones , both of whom were congratulated for their leadership in ex- WINTER, 1993 Brown Named GC Alumni Director Michelle Bowers Brown, a 1990 graduate of Gainesville College, has been named Director of Alumni Affairs of the College , effective March 1. She received her A.A. degree in business administration from GC and her B.B.A. degree in management/marketing from North Georgia College in 1991. Currently, she is employed by Brenau University as Admissions Office Manager. A more detailed profile of Michelle will be included in the spring quarter edition of Anchors Away. ceeding the goal by nearly $10 ,000. Three long-time supporters of the College and (Continued on Page 6) Five long-time supporters of Gainesville College were honored at the GC Foundation's Annual Meeting held recently at the College. Seated, left to right: Ray Jones, Bobbie Gay, and Dallas Gay, all of whom were named Honorary Life Trustees of the Foundation. Standing: GC President J. Foster Watkins; Joe Chipman, outgoing Foundation Chairman; Keith Morris, who received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the GC Alumni Assocation; Jerry Jackson, recipient of the Distinguished Service Award , also from the Alumni Association; and Lee Chapman, President of the Alumni Association. National Higher Education Week Twelve GC alumni took time from their busy days to come to the campus during National Higher Education Week, in October, to honor faculty and staff, by presenting all 200 employees of the College with individual gifts. This is the fourth consecutive year that the Alurrmi Association has sponsored this activity. It's a way for alumni to thank faculty and staff for words of encouragement, for GREAT teaching, and for being available and for listening . The faculty and staff were pleased to be honored by their former students in this way. History Instructor Ric Kabat accepts a gift from Alumni Association members Freddie Webb and Linda Hutchins. The entire class applauded in appreciation. Library personnel were happy to pose with Alumni Bob Ferguson, Anne Wade and Barbara Harris. Left to right: Ferguson, Rebecca Homan, Priscilla Rankin, Julie Marlow, Roger Brady, Wade, Valerie Wood, and Harris. Alumnus Sid Chandler, fourth from left, recognized personnel in the Business Division. Left to right: Deb Lilly, Katie Simmons, Peyton Lingle, Chandler, Chairman Louise Holcomb, and John Picklesimer. 2 Lest We Forget: After the Elections by J. Fosler Walkins President, Gainesville College comings of the current campaign system and who possibly could contribute to and support campaign reform as called for by Mr. Harris. Working in a campaign is obviously an enriching experience as described by Ms. Russell. Some go beyond that by offering themselves for public office. In the recently completed election period, those of us who work at Gainesville College were mindful of this process, particularly at the local and state levels , more so than at any time in the recent past. Two of our fine faculty members, Steve Blair and Margaret Newberry, currently serve on the Hall County Board of Education. In that position they will make decisions that will literally touch the lives of thousands of children in this county. They are joined on that Board by Keith Morris , a current trustee of the GC Foundation who attended Gainesville College in 1973-74. Keith recently received your Alumni Association's Distinguished Alumnus Award at the annual meeting of the Foundation. "Who Shot JFK?" That question was raised in a very thought-provoking presentation by Bob Harris who was on campus on January 26. Supported by the Student Government Association, Mr. Harris talked to an audience of approximately 135 students, faculty , and staff, and then conducted an extended, follow-up question and answer session. I came away from that experience with some degree of depression about the futility of it all. Mr. Harris leaves the impression that the democratic system, as we know it, is controlled by vestedinterest and power groups that go so far as to possibly assassinating a president. In response to a question from me-as an educator for 35 years who believes that things are not and don't have to be that way, he indicated that major campaign financing reform was needed so that candidates would have ways to get elected without having to depend on their personal fundraising. Such dependence, in many instances, makes them beholden to the sources of those funds. He extended his response to indicate that institutions like Gainesville College should constantly try to communicate to its students the personal power they have through the multiple individual decisions they make in their lives. He stressed also the personal responsibility they have to make those decisions in a way that supports openness in the political process and concern for the quality of life for all of us and for the future of our society. He suggested further that our Library/LRC should subscribe to publications from the "alternative media" as a means of countering the control of the public media through large cox:porations which actually own entities such as the major networks imd newspapers . I was still troubled by his presentation when I sat down and tried to develop an article for this edition of Anchors Away. Thumbing through the last issue of the newsletter, I ran across Sally Russell 's article on "Don't Just Vote ; Go Work in a Campaign. " (Ms. Russell is Associate Professor of English and French at the College .) If you did not read that article , we would be glad to make another copy available to you. In that very personalized discussion, Ms. Russell talked about the extent to which her family tradition of being involved in the pursuit of public office and working in campaigns has meant so much to her and her family over the years. In concluding that article, she identified campaign workers as a source of people who see the short- " ~. President Watkins (second from left) confers with Margaret Newberry, Steve Blair, and Frances Meadows. GC Alumna Frances Meadows, a financial aid counselor at the College, was elected to a position on the Hall County Commission. She is already involved in a decision-making process that will influence the quality of .life for all of us in Hall County and literally in Northeast Georgia because of Gainesville-Hall County's emergence as a regional center of Northeast Georgia. She is joined on the Commission by Brenda Branch, a long-time supporter of the College and one we claim as an alumna through her part-time study with us as she explored some career options. Ms. Branch is serving as Chairman of that Commission. (Continued on Page 8) 3 Alumna Davis Visits Poland Under Fulbright-Hays Grant only college professors, they are opening up noW for high school teachers. She would encourage high school personnel to apply for the grants. While at Gainesville College in 1966-68, Davis was very much involved both in and outside the classroom. She was on the Dean's List several quarters and was a member of Phi Theta Kappa, the honor society for two-year college students. She served as editor of the Yearbook for the two years that she was a student at GC . "Working with Dr. Jack Jones was a very pleasant time for me ," she indicated. "In fact," she continued , "my entire time at the College was a really nice experience. The friendships I made there have been lasting ones." After receiving the Associate of Arts degree in liberal arts from GC in 1968, Davis transferred to Clemson University where she earned the B.A.Ed. degree in social studies. She taught for several years, then returned to Clemson and received her M.Ed. degree in secondary counseling in 1979. Currently, she teaches government economics to seniors at Seneca (South Carolina) High School and is head of the Social Studies Department. She was sitting in a classroom, as a FulbrightHays scholar, on a bright sunny morning six months ago in Poland listening to a lecture about that country and its people. She was anticipating visiting some of the same sites later in the after~ noon that were mentioned in the lecture. Janey Dean Davis has come a "long way" since sitting in another classroom, a makeshift one , at the Gainesville Civic Center in 1966, as a freshman at Gainesville Junior College in its first quarter of operation. ' Davis was one of 15 South Carolina educators-9 university professors and 6 high school teachers-chosen as Fulbright-Hays scholars, who spent six weeks in Poland this past summer for a comprehensive learning experience. A University of South Carolina professor, who had visited Poland in 1989, had written a grant proposal which was funded and allowed for the group to tour Poland. The theme ofthe visit was "Poland: In Transition from the Fall of Communism to the Rise of a Democratic Society." As Davis explained: "Even under the rule of Communism, the Polish people still owned much of their own land. The Poles had remained deeply religious, predominantly Catholic, during their 45-year domination by the Soviet Union, and their cathedrals had been preserved. "The solidarity movement, which was begun in the early 1980s, continued for eight to nine years ," continued Davis. "The early days were marred by violence and by the arrest of Lech Walesa, the solidarity leader and current president. They pursued their independence, and finally the Communists peacefully allowed for elections to be held. Then, a democracy prevailed in 1989. " She indicated that renovations are continuing and are still needed in Poland, and a doubt still exists as to the form the government is going to take. "Our days were long and full in Poland," Davis acknowledged. "We put in a 12-to-14-hour working day each day, with lectures in the mornings and tours in the afternoons and evenings." The group flew in and out of Berlin, "and we rented German vans to tour Poland and stayed in Polish accommodations," she added. Since their return to the States, the scholars have shared their information and experiences with world history classes in the high schools and colleges and with community groups. Davis stressed that while the majority of Fulbright grants previously have been awarded to Janey and Scott Davis Davis has a son, Scott, who is a sophomore at Anderson College . She is the daughter of Inez Dean, retired from the GC staff, and the sister of Harriett McNeal, current vice president of the Alumni Association. Davis and McNeal have another sister, Susan Pierce, who heads the biology department at Perry (Georgia) High School. McNeal praised both of her sisters' accomplishments. "The school systems are lucky to have Susan and Janey. They both go that extra mile, not only in teaching, but in sponsoring special groups and clubs." She added: "Janey is such a good older sister. She has always been so supportive of me and of what I did, and that made it easy to follow her in school. She simply paved' the way for me at Gainesville College." 4 Checkers Brings Alumni Together GC Alumni Chuck Groves, Lawrenceville, and Kurt Allen, Winder, have recently completed one of the largest murals in this area-a wall mural 12 feet by 90 feet at the new Checkers restaurant in Athens. According to Chuck, who attended GC as recently as the 1992 fall quarter and who visited the GC Alumni Office in January , the owners of Checkers asked if students from the University of Georgia Art Department would paint a mural on the outside of a building adjacent to Checkers. When the UGA Art Department "dropped the ball," Chuck and Kurt took on the project. The guys worked four weeks on the project, including several very cold ' days in December. However, the mural was completed in time for Checkers ' grand opening the second week of December. Janice Whitmire Krull and her son Chip stand by their "Checkers" cab beside the Gainesville Checkers restaurant. husband Dan, and son Chip Whitmire who also attended the College. Additions to the chain are anticipated in Gwinnett County. Janice has fond memories of her years at the College. She indicated that "the experiences and education that I gained at the College contributed to the knowledge it took to work together and build a business as a family." WHAT ARE MATCHING GIFTS? Since 1954, more than 1,050 companies have established matching gift programs for education, the arts, public broadcasting, nonprofit hospitals, and other community organizations. Under a corporate matching gift program, gifts made hy a company's eligible employees to the nonprofit organizations that meet the company's guidelines are matched with company or corporate foundation funds. Colleges and universities were the first nonprofit organizations to benefit from matching gifts. They still receive the largest percentage of corporate matching gift monies, although benefits to other types of nonprofit organizations are growing rapidly. When considering a gift to GC, please determine whether your company is a "matching gifts" employer. Kurt Allen (left) and Chuck Groves put the finishing touches on their mural at the Checkers restaurant at Athens. Chuck, who with Kurt has established Edge Graphics, and his wife Lori have two children. Kurt, who is single, painted the GC time capsule that was buried when the College celebrated its 25th anniversary in 1989. He subsequently graduated from GC in 1990. Chuck's goal is to get a master's degree and to continue his work in the graphic design area. The mural was drawn in with crayon, then blocked with solid colors, finally blended. The medium used was oil-based enamel. Chuck described the mural as being a lot of fun to design. "It is a collage of many subjects, some directly related to others, some unique in themselves," he added. Checkers restaurants located in Athens and Gainesville are family owned and operated by Janice Whitmire Krull , a 1968 GC graduate, her 5 constructed; and in the resurfacing of the track. He served on the Foundation Board of Trustees in 1975-77. These awards are presented annually to alumni and friends of the College who have made significant contributions to the Alumni Association, the Foundation, the College, and the community. Fred Kelly, immediate Past Chairman of the Foundation and Chairman of the Investment Committee, gave a positive report noting that even in the tight fiscal climate, the endowment had increased by more than $250,000 this year, to nearly $3 million. Richard Allison, Chairman of the newly created Planned Giving Committee, reported on the work of the Committee and distributed a brochure which is being used as the Foundation moves in this fundraising direction. Gainesville College President J. Foster Watkins expressed appreciation to the Foundation for its continuing generous support of the institution . He noted that much of the success of Gainesville College is because of the broad-based support it enjoys in its service area. He acknowledged the special support of those who serve as Trustees of the Foundation and who provide leadership to and support for its multiple activities. Entertainment during the luncheon preceding the meeting was provided by the Gainesville College Jazz Combo, directed by Roy Forrester. (Continued from Front Cover) Foundation were named Honorary Life Trustees. -Dallas and Bobbie Gay, Gainesville, were selected because of their long-term involvement with the Foundation and the College. Both served with distinction as Trustees of the Foundation, Bobbie in 1988-90 and Dallas in 1980-84. Bobbie and their sons, Jeff and Tommy, all attended Gainesville College. They have provided corporate support from their multiple business interests and personal support. In addition, Bobbie has served as President of Theatre Wings, a community organization dedicated to the support of the Gainesville Theatre Alliance, a cooperative venture among Gainesville College, Brenau, and the community. Dallas has been treasurer of the Theatre Wings Endowment Fund. Both of them have been involved in virtually every volunteer aspect of the theatre program. The entire family was featured in the GTA production of "Bye Bye Birdie." They also were instrumental in organizing the St. Jude bike-a-thon at the College. -Ray Jones has served two terms as a Trustee, in 1975-78 and 1983-86, and has just concluded a very successful year as the Foundation's Honorary Fund Drive Chairman. He has supported the College personally and through his association with J & S Farms. He was a key player in the recent capital bond campaign for the Hall County Schools. The most direct contribution that he and his wife Evelyn have made to Gainesville College is their daughter, Carol Pinson, who teaches English at the College. He is a member of the Board of Directors ·of First National Bancorp, of two Boards of the Northeast Georgia Medical Center, and of the Board of Jackson Electric Membership Corporation for 17 years. Keith Morris, Gainesville, received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the GC Alumni Association. Currently a member of the Board of Trustees, he is a First Vice President of Trust Company Bank of North Georgia. He has served as Chairman of United Way, President of the Gainesville Lions Club, and is a new member of the Hall County Board of Education. He was chosen as the Jaycees Young Man of the Year in 1988-89. Jerry Jackson, Flowery Branch, was awarded the Distinguished Service Award. As a long-time, effective member of the Georgia Legislature, he served Hall County and particularly south Hall County well. From the perspective of the College, he was an invaluable source of helpful feedback from the community and served on a number of ad hoc committees over the years. He was instrumental in speeding the process of the College's first new building in 19 years, the Continuing Education/Performing Arts Center; in working with the Department of Transportation and Hall County in getting streets paved and parking lots 6 Opportu nities To Get Involved Hall County Alumni at Phonathons Volunteer for "A Day for Gainesville College" Join friends as they blitz Gainesville-Hall County to raise money for over 300 student scholarships . Thursday , April 29 , 1993 Call 404-535-620 7 for more information. The Hall County Phonathon, held on three successive evenings, was very successful. Some of the volunteers included, I to r: Steve Sorrells, Lawana Bryan, Dave Puckett, Marlon Mayfield, Judy Forbes, and Fred Kelly. New Alumni Council Members Needed The Alumni Association Nominating Committee is looking for eighteen alumni who would like to serve on the Alumni Council beginning in 1993-94. We especially need representatives from the following counties: Banks, Forsyth, Gwinnett, Habersham, and Jackson. The responsibilities are not time consuming ... the experience is rewarding ... and the group has lots of fun! WOULD YOU LIKE TO SERVE? WOULD YOU LIKE TO NOMINATE SOMEONE? Complete the form below and mail to the GC Alumni Office, P.O. Box 1358, Gainesville , GA 30503. You may also call in a nomination at (404) 535-6248. One of the many Hall County groups who called alumni on behalf of the College/Foundation were, I to r: seated, Sheri Millwood, Tony Millwood, Shirley Childers; standing, Steven McNeilly, Sid Chandler, Craig Smith, Linda Pritchett, and Caywood Chapman. He spoke in glowing terms of his years at Gainesville College and the appreciation he had for the people who had made a difference in his life while he was at the College in the early 1970s. Currently Donn Peevy, who served as a senator from Gwinnett County for many Years, is a member of the GC Foundation Board of Trustees and has been most helpful as we have reached out to Gwinnett County as our largest sending county (excluding Hall). Closer to home, James Mills was elected in November to the House of Represe~tatives and is beginning his service in that capacity. He attended Gainesville College in 1981-83 and in 1990 and is a resident of south Hall County. He will be following in the footsteps of Jerry Jackson who not only served Hall County but particularly Gainesville College well during his 18 years in the Legislature. In reflecting on this list of people who are close to Gainesville College, who have served and are serving in these positions, we know them as good and well-intentioned people. It is our hope that the enthusiasm of Sally Russell as she News Briefs Gainesville College Alumnus Harry R. Chapman, Jr. (right) presents a check to GC President J. Foster Watkins to establish a trust in memory of his father, Harry R. Chapman, Sr. The trust will provide scholarships for students studying business and finance at the College. Mr., Chapman was respected in the community, especially by local financial leaders. He was part owner and manager of the Credit Bureau of Gainesville. We are part of the future. It is our hope that the Gainesville College experience prepares our students to be meaningful players in that future ... J. Foster Watkins served in a campaign a!}d in the joy of success of people who are elected will spill over in such a way that we will support the people who serve and make the system work. In that way, the pessimistic view presented by Mr. Harris, which is probably closer to the truth than we would like to admit, will not become reality and we will not risk losing the ideals of American democracy as we know it. It rests upon how well each of us accepts the challenge from Mr. Harris to emphasize our individual responsibility as we make the decisions that impact the future . We are part of the future, It is our hope that the Gainesville College experience prepares our students to be meaningful players in that future-through service in elective offices or as responsible citizens who are involved supporters of those who serve. Sisters Jackie Phelps Mauldin (left) and Charlene Phelps Martin proudly display their medals won when they completed a grueling 26 1/5 miles in the Annual Marine Corps Marathon on October 25 in Washington, D.C. Jackie, who attended GC in 1970-71 and who manages the bookstore at the College, is serving on the 1992-93 Alumni Council. Charlene attended GC in 1969-70 and again in 1982. The pair has plans for additional running endeavors. 8 GAINESVILLE COLLEGE FOUNDATION 1992 Maritime Mark ~ THE GAINESVILLE COLLEGE FOUNDATION The Gainesville College Foundation was established in 1967 to generate and administer private financial support of the College. Overseeing the funds raised by the Foundation is a continuing responsibility of a 36-member Board of Trustees which operates through an Executive Committee. Funds provided through the Foundation continue to increase annually and are utilized primarily for student scholarships , faculty and staff development, and the many area outreach activities of the College . In recent years, increased emphasis has also been placed upon endowment activities. 1992 Executive Committee Joseph D. Chipman, Jr. , Chairman* President Lanier National Bank Gainesville Richard T. Booker Author of Published Article GC Alumna Sarah Booker, now a senior at North Georgia College and a paraprofessional in the GC Business Division, wrote an article entitled "More than Hardware-The Importance of the Human Touch in the Academic Computer Lab ," which was published in The Community, Technical, and Junior College Times of The American Association of Community Colleges in its October 6 , 1992 issue. Excerpts of that article follow: One of the great strengths of the business program at Gainesville College is the availability of the open lab and the expertise of the friendly and patient lab paraprofessionals, according to Dr. Louise Holcomb, chair of the Business Division. That statement sums up the philosophy behind the Academic Computer Lab at the College. The paraprofessionals, if they don't know the answers, do know who to call or where to go to find them. With 20 computers, five printers, and various reference books, there is usually activity in the lab. The paraprofessionills do not spend all of their time in the lab-they . can also be found in the classroom monitoring or instructing business classes or assisting with any kind of computerrelated problem. The lab hours are flexible from quarter to quarter, the facilities are available for use by any current student (priority), faculty/staff or the public. The lab is also a room for hands-on computer instruction. Sarah Booker explains an item on the computer to student Lynn Churchwell of Cornelia. Support The Foundation Through The Tribute Fund Alumni and friends of the College may support the Foundation by sending a contribution in memory of a friend or loved one, or in honor of a person in recognition of a special occasion or achievement. An acknowledgement of your generosity will be sent to the family or to the person you choose to recognize. Gifts may be designated for an existing fund or for use where the need is the greatest. Complete the form below and mail with your gift to: Gainesville College Foundation, P.O. Box 1358, Gainesville, GA 30503. (Continued from Page 9) The current Academic Computer Lab concept evolved from the need for an accounting tutor. A secretary was hired who could do accounting-a combination paraprofessional and secretary. Over the years the position evolved from the original secretary to one who has had all the necessary jobrelated courses at Gainesville College including accounting, Lotus, dBase, and WordPerfect. A faculty member in the Division oversees the support staff, but day-to-day running of the lab is left to the paraprofessionals. The staff is responsible for the cleaning and general maintenance of the computers and printers in the Lab as well as 44 computers and six printers located in adjacent classrooms. When computer-related problems arise in any of these areas, the paraprofessional on duty is there to assist. . Since the College is on a computer network system, the student may sit down at the computer and choose the appropriate program from the nearly 30 types of software programs available. Most GC students will at some point use the services available in the Academic Computer Lab. Based upon the positive feedback, the lab has proven to be most helpful. And, hopefully, these studentoriented concepts will be around for many years. Approximately 45 Hispanic, Black, and Caucasian students in grades six to twelve were enrolled in the program. Objectives of the program were to increase English and Spanish proficiency, to provide science opportunities, to promote intercultural understanding, and to enhance the self-image of participants. Plans are to further expand the program in the next five years. Each year University System Chancellor H. Dean Propst requests from the System-institutions a list of accomplishments of the past year, or what he calls a "Brag Sheet." Gainesville College's "brag sheet" turned out to be four pages long. Some of the highlights of the year follow: - The 1992 fall quarter enrollment set another record with 2,949 students enrolled, a 10 percent increase over the 1991 enrollment. This was the largest percentage increase since the 1988 fall quarter and compares with last fall's percentage increase of 7. 7 percen~. - The institution hosted the Southern Literacy Festival on campus in February, 1992. This was the first time that this event had been held in Georgia and at a two-year college. - The funding of a critically needed new academic building to house the Business Division and the Mathematics Department was the highlight in the physical plant area. It is anticipated that the building, which will total approximately 20,500 square feet, will be completed and ready for occupancy in 1994. H. Lloyd Hill, Architect & Associates of Gainesville was selected as architect for the project. -The Anchor, student newspaper, received 11 awards from the 1992 Georgia Press Associa- tion competition in February. One of the awards included the "most improved" newspaper. The Anchor received more awards than any other college-related newspaper in Georgia. -GC students continued to perform well on the Regents' Test. In 1991-92, the passing rate for first-time examinees was 75.2%, and for repeaters was 64.6 %, exceeding System averages for both testing categories. Students transferring from Gainesville College also continue to rank high when compared with other System two-year students. A total of 404 GC students transferred to System four-year colleges and universities, more than any other two-year institution with the exception of DeKalb and Macon. -For the third time in as many years, an intramural Co-Rec Flag Football team captured the State Flag Football Championship in November. In 1990, and again in 1991, the team advanced to the National tournament, where it lost in the finals. In 1992, the team lost in the quarter-finals of the National Tournament. -For the second year, a very successful six11 Northeast Georgia Volunteers Habersham County Phonathon volunteers included, I to r: Dianne Moss, Paula Lewallen, ~d Linda Smart, Coordinator.
