Students and parents can now sign up to receive an effective, professional e-mail newsletter, plus receive up-to-the-hour emergency messages when needed. Just click on the e-mail icon (Get Email Updates) on the right side of the home page of the website and register, or visit us on FACEBOOK and click on the Join My E-Mail List tab. By registering, you are giving us the okay to contact you by email with weekly or emergency messages. You can register as many e-mail addresses as you like. We ask, however, that one of the e-mail addresses be a daytime address. At any time, you can cancel your registration. Also, your e-mail address will not be given to any outside solicitor. Hurray and register now. Group e-mails will begin soon. Calendar • 2 Health Walk • 3 Seniors at Sussex Technical High School received over $4.3 million in scholarships and awards from various colleges, universities and local organizations. Awards were presented during the annual Senior Awards Ceremony at the school in Georgetown on Tuesday evening, June 1. Dr. Savini arrived at Sussex Tech in 1991 to be the school’s first principal after it changed to full-time status. He was instrumental in overseeing the successful conversion of the school into a full-time technical high school. Dr. Savini will retire in August following 27 years with the district. With love, the Class of 2010 asked Dr. Savini to be their graduation speaker. As usual, his wit and humor did not fail the students. See more graduation photos on page 7. Congratulations to Sussex Tech students who won local pageants. Front row Shannon Hopkins was crowned Mr. Delaware 2010 and Autumn Stevens was crowned Miss Laurel. Back row - Angie Wilson was first runner-up for Miss Laurel, and Kelly Horsey was voted Miss Congeniality in the Miss Laurel pageant. Dates to Remember JULY 2010 6 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .School Board Meeting, 4:30 p.m. (note date change) Several business students from Sussex Technical High School attended the 2010 National Leadership Conference of the Business Professionals of America (BPA) which took place from May 5-9 in Anaheim, California. BPA is the leading career and technical student organization for students pursuing careers in business management, office administration, information technology, and other related career fields. State winners of various BPA contests qualified to compete at the National Leadership Conference. Proudly representing Delaware and bringing home a second place plaque for desktop publishing was senior Cartina Church. Cartina had to design three assignments. Other Sussex Tech students who participated in the conference were Megan Cannon, Drew Crouse, Josh Ritter and Ryan Fitzgerald. Megan and Ryan were recognized with a Torch Award Ambassador Pin, the highest national link, for their service to their community. They were accompanied to California by business teachers Sabrina Neal and Frank Makray. In between competitions, every attendee of the national conference this year had the opportunity to spend a day at Knott’s Berry Amusement Park, seeing the sights and riding the rides. Students could also visit the Expo and College Fair that featured close to 30 businesses and schools to connect with. Sussex Technical High School seniors Tyler Dickson and John Shockley won first place in the State of Delaware Ford AAA Automotive Skills Contest held April 28 at Dover Downs International Speedway. Competition consisted of trouble shooting mechanical problems and fixing them, as well as a written test. Dozens of students from throughout the state competed. The Sussex Tech students studied Auto/Diesel under the training of Mr. Les Humphrey. They graduated on June 3. Both students each received a $47,000 scholarship package from various schools that included the University of Northwestern Ohio, Universal Technical Institute, Ohio Technical College, New England Institute of Technology, Automotive Training Center, and Ford ASSET. Health Community Walk Members of the baseball team were just some of the many athletes who participated in the walk. Sussex Tech pulled an upset by capturing the Coalition Cup away from Woodbridge when it had the most students and staff participate in the walk. Raffle winners at the walk were: PACTT staff member Sol Feliciano who received a paid vacation day; student Jeffrey Clavette, a Wii; student Michael Mather, an Ipod Shuffle; and PACTT baby Stella Carmen (held by mom Kristin), a week’s free tuition. JROTC cadets lead exercises before the walk. Members of the Electronics class (below) took a few minutes away from the Hamfest (also being held the same day at Sussex Tech) to participate in the Community Walk. Here comes Sussex Tech! Tech! Juniors Produce $1,000 Commercial... Media Broadcasting juniors Savannah Maher and Destiny Williams produced a 30-second video commercial that promotes physical activity or healthy eating among kids and/or their families. They recruited friends and classmates to participate in the video urging everyone to “get up and do something.” The ladies won $1,000 for producing the winning video in the “Get Up and Do Something” contest, sponsored by the Delaware Division of Public Health. It will be considered for possible airing in the Division’s “Get Up and Do Something” campaign. Savannah and Destiny received their award while also being honored at a Blue Rocks baseball game in late May. They are shown with their check and Media Broadcasting teacher Gary Conaway. Spanish Honor Society Inducts Members ... Sussex Technical High School inducted 12 students into the National Spanish Honor Society during ceremonies March 30. Students must maintain a 93 percent average in their Spanish class, and an overall grade point average of 90 percent. Students must also volunteer three hours of service to the Latino community. Expressions Page 4 Summer 2010 State Winners Are Named Sussex Technical High School students were winners in the State SkillsUSA competitions. The Ravens took a Gold, Silver, Bronze sweep in three events. They have 35 Gold medalists eligible for Kansas City in June and received 90 medals total. The Ravens also received the Eagle Leadership Trophy for winning medals in leadership events. TECHNICAL COMPUTER APPLICATIONS - Bronze, Ricky Bautista and Gold, Tara Windels Technical Computer Applications: Gold - Tara Windels ($2,000 in scholarships); Bronze - Ricky Bautista ($1,000 in scholarships) Students in the Class of 2013 at Sussex Technical High School participated in an Adopt-A-Highway clean up day on Saturday, May 1, on Rum Bridge Road. Accompanying the students were class advisors, Ms. Linsey Beeson and Mrs. Sherri Smith, plus a few parents. The clean up began at 8:30 a.m. and the 2.5 mile road was finished at 10 a.m. Thirty bags of trash were collected along with two huge pieces of carpet, multiple pieces of wood, and several pillows. Freshman students who participated in the clean-up were Sara Hall, Cailey Isaacs, Emily Hall, Nikki Widen, Casey Gove, Chris Clifton, Taylor Wilson, Norma Leyva-Ortiz, Chiara Abbruzzi-Davis, Sam Mitchell, Bethany Killmon, Paige Cook, Taylor Hatfield, Dylan Varrato, Tyler Whaley, Nicole Heck, Chelsea Wootten, Blaine Daisey, and Seth Wilson. Special Olympics Delaware Sussex County Basketball Skills Competition was held at Sussex Tech in March for the third year. More than 175 athletes packed into ST’s gymnasium for the annual event.
