Welcome to our Fourth Year of publishing The Islands Marketplace Free Classified
Ad Magazine!! It has been a great experience. To share in our achievement, please
take a moment to fill out and send in the Reader’s Survey on Page 14. And thanks to
everyone for three fabulous years, with hopes for many more to come.
Have you seen that television
program on A&E called “Hoarders”?
It is about obsessive compulsive
hoarding or junk collecting. The
program shows the lives of people
who can not stop collecting items,
who can’t throw things out and who
find themselves facing eviction or
losing their families and homes. It is
a little disturbing to watch.
It makes me realize that the root of
their problems may lie in consumerism,
which Wikipedia describes as the
equation of personal happiness with
consumption and the purchase of
material possessions. And it’s no
wonder, with the constant reminder
from television commercials, telling us
that we must have this and must have
that. It is clear to see what this type
of propaganda is creating. The vicious
circle of economics that corporate
CEOs are desperately relying on to
secure their outrageous salaries and
bonuses. Who cares if too much fast
food is creating disease? Who cares if
plastics are causing cancer and early
death? Who cares if people are risking
their health, families and finances for
What’s with The Code??
The numbers at the end of every classified ad in The Islands Marketplace is a
date stamp showing when the last issue
is that the ad will be printed. For example: 10-16 means that the ad will not run
after Oct. 16 (this issue). Each ad is usually placed for four issues, or until someone asks us to take it out. Most NEW ads
in this issue have the code 11-27 (Nov. 27
is the last issue that the ad will run.)
Marketplace
things that they really don’t need.
Who cares if people are losing their
homes trying to keep up with the
Joneses? All that matters is that the
factories are still producing plastic
and toxins, the trucks and ships are
still burning oil and moving products
around the world, to fill the dollar
stores and Walmarts with nicknacks
for our hoarders, collectors and
desperate housewives. Really?
How do these CEOs sleep at night,
knowing the legacy that they will
leave behind?
We can’t really blame them, can
we? It is a human problem. Wouldn’t
you do everything in your power to
keep your paycheque? All of us have
to step back and find the things that
ruly matter in our lives. After we all
are 6 feet under, it won’t matter to us,
but it will be a desperate problem for
our children.
If you agree with any of this,

then you must agree that we as the
consumers are actually the ones with
all the power. Our power is in our
pocketbooks. It is up to us to exercise
our rights in choosing carefully
which products we purchase and
bring home. Don’t let the marketing
geniuses convince you that your life
will be better with just one more
thing from China. Follow the 100
mile diet for everything, including
clothes, toys, gifts, furniture and
other products. When you shop, ask
yourself, do you need it or want it?
Only buy what you need, save your
money and save our society from the
evil pitfalls of a desperate economy
depending on consumerism that’s
gone out of control. Economists will
say this doesn’t make any sense,
but it makes sense to those that
believe that saving our planet from
extinction is a bigger priority.

With temperatures recently reaching record lows for this time of year,
it is obvious that now is the time to get your vehicle ready for winter.
Call your local mechanic and book your appointment for a complete
tuneup and winterizing. These services may include oil and filter change,
distributor cap, rotor, plugs and wires inspected and changed and new air
filter installed. Tune-ups should also include greasing of the front end,
brake & tire check, complete wire and hose inspection, as well as checking the belts, battery, lights and fluids. Some mechanics also offer a computer read out of electrical and mechanical performance.
For safe and economical driving, tires must always be in good condition, especially when temperatures change. Make sure you have the right
tires for the season and for your usage. If you don’t have winter tires
make sure you have proper fitting chains for when the snow hits hard. Always check your tire pressure and get them properly balanced and aligned
when having them changed.
You can save some money if you do some of your vehicle maintenance work yourself. Clean corroded battery posts with sandpaper and
use some petroleum jelly to keep them clean and working well. Replace
your windshield wipers and buy another set to keep on hand. Purchase
good quality antifreeze and oil, buy extra so you’re not left without when
you need it. Make sure you are equipped with a a first aid kit, a small
shovel, windshield scraper and jumper cables so you don’t get stuck on
the side of the road in rough weather. The guys at Salt Spring Auto Parts
can help you find exactly what you need.
Winter tuneups and vehicle care sounds like a lot of work that could
end up being costly, but it doesn’t have to be. If you keep your vehicle
maintained regularly, your mechanic will be able to help you prevent
costly repairs and problems.

Don’t Panic! Call your Mechanic....

Pleasure Craft Operators
Card Now Required by Law
September 15th was the deadline for any one who drives a
motorized pleasure craft (10 horsepower and above) to obtain
their Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC). This is true if the
vessel is equipped with power whether it is in use or not. To
help those who have not yet taken the test, Salt Spring’s Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary Unit 25 is offering a 3-hour course in
which boaters will be prepared and take the test for their PCOC.
The course covers the rules and the tools for safe boating as
well as basic seamanship and safe trip planning. Some literature
will be provided. Knot tying and simulated vessel traffic will
help you use knowledge gained. Three separate courses will be
offered to accommodate the public. Classes will take place at
the GISS (room S107) from 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. room. Pre-registration is required as space is limited to 25 people per course.
Course dates are:
Thursday October 22 Thursday October 29 Wednesday November 4 Recommended registration fee is $30 (which includes
the $10 Transport Canada processing fee and a $20 donation to
the Gulf Islands Marine Rescue Society.) To register, please email Tom McKeachie, Unit 25 Training Officer at tymck@telus.
net (preferred) or call 250-537-5637.
Holders of approved equivalency qualifications are not required to carry the card, but may, for their convenience, apply
by simply showing their document with $10, no test. Refer to
equivalencies at http://www.tc.gc.ca/marinesafety/debs/obs/
courses/pcoc/list-marine-safety-certif.htm for a list of the accepted qualifications. Your Pleasure Craft Operator Card is good
for life.

A Global Day of Climate Action

trio (free range eggs, organic spelt toast, wild berry jam), part Kate Bush
in the bush with Joni Mitchell as a guide, Oona’s music is a river connecting song to sustainability, heartache to hope, passion to possibility,
inspiring us to not only love the world, but believe we can transform it.

Keep, Hawaiian woodwinds whiz Richard Lee and soulful percussionist

No mistaking its organic identity
Salt Spring Island is home to three wineries/
vineyards including the newly created Mistaken
Identity Vineyards. Opened in June of 2009,
the vineyard is managed and co-owned by Salt
Spring residents Ian & Wendy Baker along with
Vancouver Island partners Dave & Lenora Baker
and Cliff Broetz & Barb Steele. Two years into
the venture they have built a new winery, created
a new tasting room, deck and picnic grounds and
are proud to be open to the public. The winery and
vineyard is located on Lower Ganges road near
Ganges Harbour.
Mistaken Identity is proud to grow Certified
Organic grapes. While this adds significantly to
the care of the vineyard all the owners are unanimous that this is how they wish to be responsible
stewards of the land and how to be responsible to
future generations. They like to think their wines
pair with many different foods but more importantly, they pair well with the planet. A labour of
love that is truly worth it, for generations.
This year’s crop is on the way into production.
With all partners and their families working hard
alongside numerous friends, the harvest is nearing completion for another year. Mistaken Identity has just won two Bronze Medals at this year’s
Canadian Wine Awards. With medals in hand for
the Pinot Gris and the Pinot Rose they are setting
the bar higher for next year. Other released wines
include the Abbondante (or ‘Abundant’) Bianco
and Gewurztraminer. Soon to follow is the Abbondante Rosso, a Pinot Noir and later, a Merlot.
New next year will be a Chardonnay and Apple
dessert wine.
“It has been truly gratifying to see how well we
have been received on Salt Spring”, says Wendy
Baker. “Our guestbook is filled with compliments
and this gives us great pleasure”. There is no mistaking the quality of the wines and the approach
to grape growing and wine making. And along the
way, “we’re better neighbors and better members
of the community”.

Celebrating
the Grape
Harvest
W
hile enjoying a nice glass of wine any
time of year is great, now is the busiest
time for most vineyards and wineries.
Our BC wines are fast becoming recognized for
their excellence and local uniqueness, with many
wineries spread far and wide across the province. Fruit is also grown in
abundance, with cherries, and apples, pears and kiwi’s growing throughout the interior and the islands.
Southern Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands comprise some of
the warmest growing regions in Canada. Microclimates exist that have
enabled several different island wineries to produce multiple-award winning wines.
Many of these wineries are small and family-owned, focused on creating superlative, low-volume wines available on-site or through select
restaurants and cold beer & wine stores. Many vineyards offer tours and
tastings with picnic facilities and even hosting special events.
One such event is the Grape Harvest Stomp on Saturday, October 24, from 12 - 5pm at the Salt
Spring Island Vineyards. With a live music lineup of folk and jazz entertainers, food, wine tasting
and grape stomping (of course) as well as discounts on wine and boutique purchases.
The winery’s traditionally crafted champenoise-style, white, red & dessert wines have landed
Salt Spring Vineyards a bronze medal at the 2008 Northwest Wine Summit for its 2007 Blackerry
Port. They also produces Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pino Gris, Pinot Blanc and Leon Millor and they
have won gold and silver medals for some of these wines.
Salt Spring Vineyards began this year’s grape harvest on Oct. 5 employing all local hand pickers. Harvest will be finished mid-Oct this year as thru weather has been so cooperative. SS Vineyards are pleased to be a fully sustainable vineyard with all the work done by hand, including
weeding, pruning and picking, even labelling the bottles.
For owners Dev and Joanne McIntyre, working on the vineyard is a dream realized. After retiring from the medical profession, they are fulfilling their passion for the
grapes and wine making. Joanne says “It’s been a fabulous year for the
grapes and we love having people enjoy our beautiful vineyard.”
Be sure to visit next Saturday for an exciting and memorable experience, with wine tasting, grape stomping and lots of harvest-time fun.
is that a fact...?

This is what I was thinking.....
Grapes To Wine...
13
By Tracey Supina
“Drink to celebrate fullness, not fill emptiness” Tracey’s Marinara Recipe
o feel the grapes squish between your
toes, if any of you remember Lucy ( I
love Lucy) she had the greatest experience stomping around a wine vat, dress hiked
up and barefoot and true to Lucy form the expressions on her face, the trouble only she can
get into priceless. The episode aired back in
April of 1956. Ever since I saw that episode
(rerun of course as to not date myself too badly) I have always wanted to stomp grapes.
When my brothers and I were little we
spent time with my grandparents in the summer. My Pop’s made homemade choke cherry
wine. I think we could have been intoxicated
off the fumes.
It was always served at our big Italian
family reunions and my Great Uncles dancing and singing and laughing the choke
cherry wine flowing. Now with all variety
of wines from so many countries it is a pleasure to walk through a wine store, to an avid
reader like walking through a book store,
to a painter the beautiful colors of nature or
a scene that just needs to be seen on canvas.
My boyfriend and I enjoy the reds, the robust flavors, the deep garnet color, we sip and
then talk about what we taste and what foods
would go with a certain wines. It feels like a
hobby. I always ask what country should we go
to this weekend for our wine tasting. I know he
would jump at the chance to stomp grapes with
me.
I have inherited my Italian Nona’s way of
cooking, I loved making marinara with her she
started first thing in the morning, cutting, chopping, squeezing, and pressing garlic oh the garlic, then by lunch time we had our taste a scoop
on a piece of bread with a glass of wine (when
I was older) as we stayed in the kitchen talking
about everything I watched her ...a little wine
in the glass and a couple of chugs into the simmering pot of sauce. Her marinara was to die for
and she always said “it was all in the wine”....
so my marinara equally sauced up as her was.
Don’t be afraid to share some of your wine with
your sauce the smell makes your mouth water as
you stir it in. Here is a simple Marinara recipe
....cheers and don’t forget your favorite wine....
The Islands Marketplace
HOROSCOPE
1 large onion, diced
1⁄2 tsp dried basil
3 garlic cloves, minced 2 bay leaves
1 red bell pepper, diced 1⁄2 tsp cracked pepper
4 tbsp. olive oil
1⁄2 tsp dried oregano
1 cup sliced mushrooms (optional)
1⁄2 cup full bodied red wine
1 can whole tomatoes, chopped, juice reserved
1 pound fresh tomatoes, diced
1 can tomato paste
2 tsp sugar
1 tsp salt
Saute onion, garlic and red pepper in the oil in a
large pot for 5-7 min. Add the mushrooms, canned
tomatoes with the reserve juice, add the fresh tomatoes, stirring well to combine all the ingredients. Stir
in the tomato paste. Sprinkle the sugar, salt, pepper,
oregano and basil over the mixture, and place the
bay leaves in the pot. Mix well, bring to a boil,
lower to simmer, add wine slowly stirring in well,
(take a moment at this time to enjoy the aroma of
the spices, tomato and wine infused together) cover
and cook about 2 hours. Remove the bay leaves before serving. If you feel the need you may add more
wine, my Nan (Nona) never measured....ENJOY

YUM!!
Keeping it Reehl
Advice, recipes and stories by Georgiana Reehl
HALLOWEEN is upon us again...
You know what?
We have been making jack o’lanterns at Halloween for centuries, it
actually originated from an Irish myth, a man named ‘stingy jack’
Well! here’s an interesting story.....
This matey named Stingy Jack had invited the Devil to have a drop of
brew with him, and of coarse true to his name, stingy jack didn’t want to
pay for his drink, so he convinced the Devil to turn himself into a coin so
that Jack could pay for their drinks. So the Devil did, Jack then decided
to keep the money and placed it with a silver cross in his pocket so that
the Devil couldn’t change back into his original form.
Later on Jack set the Devil free under the condition that he would not
bother Jack for one whole year.....and that, should Jack kick the bucket,
he wouldn’t claim his soul.
The next year, Jack again tricked the devil into climbing into a tree to
pick a piece of fruit. While the Devil was up the tree, Jack carved a sign
of the cross into the tree bark so the devil could not come down until the
devil promised Jack not to bother him for ten more years.
Well! later on down the road Jack kicked the bucket. As the legend
goes - God would not allow such an unsavoury figure into heaven. And
the Devil, he was real mift at Jack and the tricks he played on him and
keeping his word not to claim his soul, he would not allow Jack into hell.
he sent Jack on his way into the night with only a burning coal to light his
way. Jack carved out a turnip and placed the coal into it, Jack has been
gallivanting around the Earth ever since.
The Irish began to refer to this ghostly figure as “Jack of the Lantern,” and then, simply “Jack O’ Lantern.”
You know in Ireland and Scotland, people made their own version
of Jack’s lantern by carving scary faces into turnips and potatoes..they
place them into windows near doors to frighten Stingy Jack away and
other evil spirits. Some parts of England, large beets are used.

Seeing The Whole
By Jim Anderson
“ …in all kinds of knowledge
I perceive that my views are insufficient, and my judgment imperfect.
In experiments I come to conclusions
which, if partly right, are sure to be
in part wrong…always left with a
tinge of humanity, evidenced by its
imperfection…though in favorable
cases I may see a good deal, I never
see the whole.”
Michael Faraday (Last lecture to
the Royal Society, circa 1862)
Michael Faraday was an experimental scientific genius of common
origins who rose to become an exalted member of the Royal Society of
England. He possessed an uncanny
insight to strike to the heart of bewildering scientific problems almost by
instinct. It was said that he “smelled
the truth.” But perhaps the greatest
measure of his mind and his wisdom
was his everlasting and profound humility.
That kind of invincible humbleness is rare in our world today. And,
it is an unfortunate and sad fact.
Examining the history and development of human thought and
knowledge and the sometimes absurd and preposterous things that
human beings have believed through
the ages, surely humility, not arrogance or bravado are
in order. Alongside of brilliance,
technology and significant progress, there has also been colossal
ignorance that passed as absolute
and certifiable truth in our human
world.
Centuries ago humans believed
the Sun to be a “chariot of fire’, a
scarab beetle, a boat or Phoenix
coursing across the sky. The earth
was unquestionably flat. Five hundred years ago a small group of
ridiculed and ostracized humans
dared to insist that the Earth itself
was not the center of the Universe.
Such a monstrous and heretical
idea threatened the very stability
and power balance of human society itself. You and I today accept
and know this startling revelation
to be common truth. But back
then the reverberation and reaction
of this simple cosmological truth
shattered and broke the conceptual
matrix and womb of consciousness
for all human civilization. It took
generations and generations for human thought and society to recover
and assimilate this basic truth. And
nothing was ever the same again.
OCTOBER 16, 2009
Jim Anderson is a writer living on Saltspring. He is working on a
metamorphosis of the human mind. © 2009 by Jim Anderson, Saltspring Island
We know today that the oppression, despair and abomination of the
dark ages could never have evolved
into renaissance and enlightenment
without this devastating revolution
and rebirth of a new human consciousness centered around those startling
and revolutionary new ideas. Those
incendiary ideas were the galvanizing
force that lead the human spirit, soul
and consciousness into a new world.
But, perhaps the chaos that they manifested was simply the last chapter.
Maybe the real revolution happened
deep within the human chain of life
where there was a secret and organismic spiritual awakening just beneath
the surface that simply needed the vehicle of new and staggering ideas to
break free and surface in our world.
Perhaps in a much larger and more
critical dimension this is what is really
happening now in the chaos and catastrophic crisis we are living in today.
Maybe what we are all waiting for is
simply the last chapter in a secret and
mysterious spiritual awakening and
transcendence that is just beneath the
surface in our modern world. Maybe
we all are simply marking time in this
insane, disintegrating and desperate
world we live in until a new, radical
and transfiguring idea is born. An
unimaginably incredible idea that
will shake our world to its roots and
leave all order, power and control
in ruins…after which nothing will
ever be the same again. If this is
true, you and I are in for monstrous
and cataclysmic change the like of
which dwarfs the earthquake of
change that shook the ancient world
of Geocentrism, Copernicus and the
inquisition. Hopefully, this time
around it will not take generations
and generations to assimilate. We no
longer have the luxury of that much
time to waste.
Somehow that revolutionary idea
will come from the deep mystery of
universe itself beyond our primitive,
superficial and incomplete lives. In
the process, the human mind and
consciousness will evolve into a
higher synthesis with the secret design of universe, itself. Those new
ideas that are coming will help humankind finally reach a magnificent
destiny. Perhaps at last and for the
first time ever in all creation human beings will then reach beyond
the imperfection and ignorance of
today and know and understand the
“whole.” And that most certainly
will truly be a humbling experience.
Until then we wait for an idea whose
time has finally come, when the
meek will finally inherit the earth.

Delhi 2 Dublin is a group of five musicians who mashup electronica
with world music, keeping it heavy on the Bhangra and Celtic flavours.
Fusing tabla, fiddle, dhol, electric sitar, and Punjabi and English vocals
with scorching electronic beats, Delhi 2 Dublin takes listeners on a wild
ride through global sounds and synchronicities. Their unique style of
live electronica is the ultimate transcultural music experience. It is the
sound for today’s Globalista.
They have have wowed audiences at some of Canada’s largest festivals, including the Vancouver Folk Music Festival, Shambhala, and
Salmon Arm Roots and Blues. In 2007, they were invited to Ottawa
to open the massive Canada Day celebrations on Parliament Hill for
40,000 people. More recently they’ve been in demand south of the border, showcasing at South By Southwest (TX) and garnering invites to
Stern Grove in San Francisco, Earthdance (CA), the High Sierra Music
Festival (CA), and Bumbershoot (WA).
These musicians are known for their incredibly high-energy stage
performance which could be described as a human fireworks show!
Dehli 2 Dublin has recently won the “Outstanding World Music
Recording” at the 2009 Western Canadian Music Awards, and now
they will be performing at the Beaver Point Hall, Salt Spring Island on
Thurs., October 29. Doors open at 8, show starts at 9pm.
