2013 annual report The Sacramento Zoological Society 2013 Annual Report Message from the Board President board president “Thank you for your loyalty and continued support of our Sacramento Zoo. I promise that we, the Trustees, will continue to do our best to carry on the trust you have given us.” Greetings to all the members of our Zoo family! I have just completed my first year as President of the Board of Trustees. You may have noticed the name change from Board of Directors to Board of Trustees. I asked for this change because it places an important emphasis on who we are: trustees who are entrusted with the care and well-being of Board President James Naify the animal population, dedicated staff, and the beautiful grounds which make up the Sacramento Zoo. You’ve probably heard about the many successes of the Zoo in 2013, including record 2013 Board of Trustees James Naify, President Jeff Raimundo, Vice President Charles Dalldorf, Secretary Kevin Barri, Treasurer Starr Walton Hurley, Past President Mary Healy, Zoo Director/CEO Katharine Ayers Gelber Barbara Bonebrake Michael Broughton Lisa A. Bruno Nancy E. Cole Jeffrey K. Dorso Murray E. Fowler, D.V.M. Judy Gregory Steven Johnson Erwin Karp John W. Otto Linda L. Price Jason Russell, C.P.A. Adham Sbeih Susan Schoenig attendance, the addition of many engaging zoo babies, and the progress of fundraising for the new Small Wonders of Africa habitat. In 2014, we look forward to the completion of this important project, as well as a number of additional changes to the Zoo – all the while keeping the small, family-friendly feeling that we all cherish. One of the great successes of 2013 has been the Quarters for Conservation program. It has allowed us to contribute over $100,000 to habitat conservation in a number of African and Asian locales. The message here is simple and clear: Habitat Conservation = Species Preservation. While the tragedies of hunting and poaching are the highly visible causes for loss of rare and endangered species, by far the greater danger is habitat loss through agricultural expansion and deforestation. The extinction of even a single species should not be tolerated, and that loss can never be reversed. Thank you for your loyalty and continued support of our Sacramento Zoo. I promise that we, the Trustees, will continue to do our best to carry on the trust you have given us. Elizabeth Stallard Mike Testa Jill M. Trainer, Ph.D. Alan Yee, M.D. James Naify President Board of Trustees director’sfrom desk the Director’s Desk “It is our hope that each one makes a connection with the animals and leaves knowing we are doing our part to make sure the Sacramento Zoo stays a viable community asset for generations to come.” Although not obvious to the casual visitor at the Sacramento Zoo, we achieved a significant milestone in 2013 with the continuation of our accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). We are extremely proud that the Sacramento Zoo has been accredited since Mary Healy and a tall friend 1975! AZA accreditation ensures that the animals you visit receive excellent care every day, and that the organization has met mandatory, rigorous, professional standards for animal welfare and management, veterinary care, behavioral enrichment, nutrition and staff training. Rest assured, however, that it is not a rubber stamp process to continue to meet and pass the meticulous standards of accreditation. The 2013 application process was a year in preparation with 230 questions on 26 double-sided pages and included 186 attached documents covering policies and procedures at the 3930 West Land Park Drive Sacramento, CA 95822 916-808-5888 Sacramento Zoo. Three visiting inspectors took three days to examine every aspect of operations including animal care, visitor services, conservation efforts, educational programming, finances and safety. The AZA accreditation is an objective measure of our long term commitment to the animals, visitors and staff. Everyone in the Sacramento region should share in our pride at this achievement as it is a true measure of the value placed on our The nonprofit 501(c)(3) Sacramento Zoological Society, formed in 1957, serves as the managing and fundraising organization for the Zoo, providing funds for animal care, education and conservation programs. living world by the community in supporting an accredited Zoo. I continue to be amazed by the number of people who come to the Zoo for education, recreation and events each year. In 2013, we broke a 23-year record for attendance with over 540,000 visitors coming to our 14-acre Zoo. It is our hope that each one makes a connection with the animals and leaves knowing we are doing our part to make sure the Sacramento Zoo stays a viable community asset for generations to come.
