Is that my Grandpa with Kim?
All those days spent polishing the trailer, putting new air shocks on the car, hours spent
scrounging thrift stores for the perfect get up are over, and another great May weekend
with the TCT is nothing but a memory.
Kim and I had, again, another great weekend thanks to the hard work of Forrest and
Jeri Bone, their son Terry and his wife Michelle, who again hosted what has to be
the best vintage trailer gathering in the country.
We rolled in Thursday evening about 5:30, a little late for the chili cook off, but not too
late to visit and have a cocktail with some of our old friends already there. We got the
trailer up on the pad without sinking into the mud, unlike our friends Kirk and Beth a
couple of spots down, who had to get a 4WD to pull their car out and park the trailer.
Friday we spent catching up with friends, and making new ones. There were many new
people there this year, and the variety of campers there was amazing. Everybody has
a story to tell about their trailer, and I really enjoyed meeting some of the new people,
and hearing their tales. Here are a few…
Is that DeNiro with Marilyn?
Baron and Teri Leblanc brought the “Starlight Lounge”, a 1955 Pontiac Chieftan motor
home. This thing was found on Craig‟s List rotting away in a field with no engine and
trans, but that didn‟t stop them, no sir. They could see the late 50′s cool through the
dirt and decay. Baron had a 302 Ford and automatic setting idle, and dropped (GASP!)
into the old Pontiac‟s engine bay. Then, they spruced up the dilapidated interior ‟60′s
lounge lizard style, and went camping! Cuba Libre, anyone?
Their first TCT trip was last September‟s fall rally, but it won‟t be their last.

John and Debbie Dingman had planned on bringing their early 60′s Fleet wing to this
springs meet after having a great time at last year‟s fall rally, but an arsonist changed
their plans. The trailer was torched in their driveway, and was a total loss along with
their truck. John, a pastor, found that their insurance policy only covered items owned
by the church (they live in their church‟s parsonage), and the trailer turned out not to
be insured.
It‟s said that when one door is closed, another is opened, and this turned out to be the
case. They found their Royal Mansion on Craig‟s List just three weeks ago, made the
deal, and are now happy campers in this spectacular original trailer. Their truck, a
church owned vehicle, was covered, John and Debbie now have a new insurance
agent, along with a new trailer!
Mike Fontana was there with a stunning ‟48 Ford coupe, and a ‟65 Bee Line. He bought
the trailer from a friend, whose new wife refused travel in the X-wifes camper, so Mike
made an offer and the Bee Line found an appreciative new owner. He lives just down
the road in Wixom, and vows that by this fall the coupe (powered by it‟s original, but
hopped up, Flatty) will be equipped with a hitch to tow the Bee Line.
Steve and Melissa Reed bought a 1960 Shasta for a hundred dollars, and thought it was
a pretty good deal. The next day, he bought 5 scratch off lottery tickets, and one of
them was a hundred-dollar winner, so they figure the trailer cost 5 bucks. Jackpot!
Chris and Jan O‟Dell are Milford residents who‟ve been coming to the open houses for
several years. This year, they brought their own trailer, a ‟66 Bee Line “Wasp”, and
towed it with their cherry ‟63 Impala. They also have a ‟57 Chevy 2 door post sedan it
will probably be sporting a hitch as well!
Glenn and Linda Parrache came all the way from southern PA with their beautiful ‟57
Silver Streak Jet. Glenn incorporated some ‟55 Pontiac Silver Streak trim in the interior,
along with other “Jet Age” styling cues, to set the beautiful trailer off. They hope to be
back as well.

Friday night, I was convinced (after a couple of glasses of wine) to serve as the
auctioneer for the TCT trailer auction. The happy new owner, Brian Lossing, was a
little discouraged as he thought I was ignoring his bids, but really, Bob Meredith kept
immediately out bidding him! Congrats to Brian Lossing for sticking with it, ignoring my
admittedly limited auctioneering skills and getting the winning bid on the little canned
ham. (1955 Westerner)
After the auction, “McCool and the Gang”, made their first, and hopefully LAST, TCT
appearance. There is a reason guys don‟t usually stand in front of a band and sing, and
this is it. I‟d be embarrassed, but, really, Mike Greene made me do it…

Saturday was the open house, and official “show”. Kim had fun giving tours of the
trailer in her late ‟40′s garb. She said I looked like my Grandpa, but I don‟t think he
had a goatee. Lot‟s of people dressed in period clothing, from the ‟30′s to the
70′s. We had a ball, and everybody seemed to enjoy it!
Kids, don't try this at home.
Under the Big Top on Saturday night, Alexander Kensington and that Dangerous
Beauty, Charon Henning, entertained with their sideshow act. Fire eating, sword
swallowing and contortion, they make it look like child‟s play, but don‟t try it at home!
In addition, they‟re TCT members and had 66 Airstream Safari at the show. It
was great to see them perform again for us.
We‟d packed away the awning and lawn chairs before the rain on Saturday night, so we
didn‟t have wet gear to stow, and got a pretty early start what turned out to be a
beautiful Sunday morning. It‟s always sad to leave, but Vicksburg, the Gilmore Red
Barns Show, Port Crescent, and the Fall Rally back in Milford are right around the
corner.

North American Vintage Trailer and Motor Coach
Concours/Show
On the Saturday of the Annual Gathering the North American Vintage Trailer and Motor
Coach Concours/Show becomes part of the Gathering. Dan Piper serves as the concours
steward and winners from the previous year serve as judges. TCT is very fortunate to
have members that support both the concours awards and special music for the
Gathering.

Heroshi has been an unbelievable supporter of TCT and vintage trailering in Japan.
His humanitarian assistance during the recent tsunami utilizing his trailers to transport

Attendee, Mike Fontana, sent along a blurb he is sending in to his

Camping has always been fun to me even as a little guy with my parents and with our
kids as they were growing up. last year we got an old Beeline 13 foot camper from a
friend of ours and decided to restore it. With my wife, Roxanne, we worked all fall and
winter putting in a new floor, recovering the cushions, and varnishing it all. Dick
Monroe redid the table and counter top and Roxanne made new curtains. This spring
was the time to redo the outside. The only problem was that it rained every other day.
After a lot of sanding and priming it was time for paint. I took a trip to tractor supply
and found a great deal on enamel paint; $37.00 a gallon plus primer and thinner. I felt
that if it went on tractors that sat out all the time then it was good enough for my $600
camper. Finally the white was painted with help from Phil Lyon. Then it was time
for the yellow paint, but once again the rain came. We finally had about four hours of
dry skies so we added two extra caps of hardener and stared spraying. That was
perfect and by the time it started raining again, the paint was dry. The next day it was
time to hook up and head out to Camp Dearborn for the Tin Can Tourists 14th Annual
Gathering with my 46 ford coupe towing the Beeline. If you like old campers and old
cars this was the place to be. I had one of the best week ends with a lot of fun people
with the same hobbies. You can get on line with the Tin Can Tourists and see about
150 old vintage campers and cars. It was fun going in all the old campers and talking
about their cars and what they are fixing up to bring next time. I think our camp site
was the place to hang out with friends and strangers that became new friends. This
camp club is a class act and would be a great fall FMRCOA color tour stop in September
I‟ll try and set it up if the club would like to go and have a fun day. I‟m not sure what
was the most popular, the old Beeline ,the „46 Coupe , or our new puppy Willie, but I
sure had fun telling about them. Mike Fontana

Vicksburg Old Car Festival
This event hosted by TCT members Ken and Lee Evensen and is in its fourth year.
Because parking is in the historic village the number of units is limited. Thanks to the to
all that participated. It was a great time.

Milton Graton’s Trailer

In May, Arnold Graton approached the RV/MH Museum in Elkhart IN to see if there was an
interest in taking his father‟s hand-built travel trailer, since the Gratons were cleaning out their
barns and sheds. Because of the current tenuous status of the museum, the request was
forwarded to Forrest Bone, and a couple of emails later, the Gratons generously donated the
trailer to the Tin Can Tourists.
This is no ordinary trailer. Milton Graton built it in the mid-thirties to be used as his home and office
when he was on site as a bridge-builder, first creating standard bridges but then using his carpentry,
shoring, rigging and timber framing skills to build covered wooden bridges. Milton became one of a
very few Master Bridge wrights and from 1954 until his death in 1994, built or rebuilt 30 wooden
covered bridges throughout the United States. Nationally recognized, Charles Kuralt interviewed him
and stated that Milton built “wooden bridges the old fashioned way,” and National Geographic filmed
his work in the late 80‟s while renovating Brown‟s River Bridge in Vermont. Milton wrote a book, still
available, The Last of the Covered Bridge Builders. The old fashioned method used mortise and
tendon joints and “tree nails” (wooden pegs) so no iron or steel was involved, and Milton‟s contracts
were old-fashioned also, using a mere handshake to close the deal. Milton‟s book title was a bit
premature as Milton‟s sons and grandsons became bridge wrights too and continue the same
business. The trailer was not always reserved for business though. Used for pleasure, locally in New
England and also for longer trips, Arnold recalls at least two treks where the family of five traveled to
Florida in the big Packard while towing it. A galley with icebox, a “Pullman” restroom containing
shower and toilet, and a cast iron stove provided more amenities than most trailers of the period.
Currently, the trailer still resides in New Hampshire. As you can see from the photos, the tongue is
wood and has no hitch coupler or jack (the coupler disappeared with one of Arnold‟s brothers years
ago). The plan is to flat-trailer from NH to Trumansburg NY where it will be stored and exhibited at
the TCT Northeast Rally at Sampson State Park on September 15-18. Because the creed of the Tin
Can Tourists includes “the preservation of vintage trailers and motor coaches,” the plan is not to
restore the Graton trailer, but to preserve and present it the way it was used. There is much to be
done to ready it for its new home, and I am working with Arnold and TCT Northeast Rep, Bill Fletcher
on logistics to secure the rig for travel with minimal changes to its architecture. A modern hitch will
be attached to the oak tongue so we can winch it onto the flat trailer, the tall chimney telescopes
into the trailer, and we are considering a shrink-wrap to protect the canvas roof, windows and doors.
A jack and/or stabilizers will be needed for presentation.
The Graton trailer is truly a great gift with considerable historical provenance. With further
replacements (axle, brakes, bearings, tires, brakes), it may be able to travel the road as it did 70
years ago. What a sight that would be as it exits a Milton Graton covered bridge!

First Williamsburg Rally a Great Success
Mike and Peggy Mason hosted their first Official TCT Gathering recently and
from the attendee response a good time was had by all. Be sure to follow the

I had a great time this weekend at my first TCT rally. Peggy and her husband did a
great job. The Williamsburg KOA folks were wonderful hosts. The weather couldn't have
been more perfect. I loved meeting other vintage trailer folks and enjoyed looking at all
of the vintage trailers. It was fun watching the 34 foot Spartan getting into its spot:) I
look forward to more TCT adventures.

Gerry and I arrived at the camp ground on the previous Monday to set up. It was grey
and raining. On Tuesday a handful of enthusiastic campers joined us. By Wednesday
the monsoon had moved in. I don‟t think I have ever seen rain like this before. The rain
was pouring down so hard rivers were flowing through the site and lakefront property
began appearing. 3 more keen campers showed up in the downpour, laughing! After
the monsoon abated we had steady grey depressing drizzle up to and including all day
Thursday. Everyone who was arriving kept telling us the weather report was for
sunshine on the weekend. I think as people were setting up they were beginning to
think: WHAT ARE WE DOING! On Friday morning we woke up to no rain and some blue
sky. Everyone‟s spirits were starting to lift. It got brighter and brighter and we had
brilliant sunshine for the rest of the week. It was AMAZING! We certainly played our
cards right again for the third year!
Our first activity was the Margarita Party fundraiser for Cystic fibrosis. We raised
546.89$. It was a very successful event .There were 4 machines running full tilt. We

capped the evening with an amazing sweater parade, starting off with one of last year‟s
winner s. The sweaters and contestants really were outstanding. It was a close race
between 3 contestants but the audience nailed it down to one winner. Kevin presented
his golf sweater with an incredible swagger, Eric‟s sweater with lights was very
ingenious, but Greg‟s troll sweater that he had worked on all year was the winner.
Saturday morning opened with our garage sale. The feeding frenzy started at 10. It was
hard to keep people away until the start but we managed. It was very successful and
fun. We started a silent auction for 2 folding bikes that had been donated and the funds
raised went to Colon cancer research. We had a bidding war going throughout the day
and the final total was 160$. The bikes went to a great energetic couple who will put
many miles on them for sure. The traditional open house started at 12:30 to brilliant
skies. Outsiders began to arrive. The hotrod run showed as always and parked in the
middle of the field. Everyone was in a fantastic mood. We had a few trailers making
their debuts. Total ground up restorations: 1965 Airstream Tradewind, 1965 Chief, and
a Pink 1961 Holiday House. Also new to our rally was the incredibly cute 1964 Teepee,
a 1955 Rainbow, the very long 34‟ 1991 Airstream, 1953 31‟Spartenette, 1978 GMC
Eleganza, 1975 Dodge Diplomat II, 1935 Masterbuilt and a 1962 Robinhood. The pool
was open and crowded. Some actually had to cool off! It was a relaxing day leading
into the potluck supper at 6. We ate under the big canopies because the sun was sooo
bright. Again this year we presented our homemade trophies to everyone in
attendance. Gerry modeled this year‟s trophy topper after a 1954 Sport Ranger Tent
Camper owned by our dear friend Eddie. He was pretty excited to see his trailer
immortalized on top of the trophies. Door prizes were drawn by a 2 year old who very
carefully drew every name out of the box. Vintage Trailer Supply had generously
donated a large box of great prizes supplemented with others that we had collected
over the year so no one went without! Then to wrap the evening off the Canucks won
the second game of the Stanley Cup playoffs in overtime. The game had been playing
in the garden next to the clubhouse. We had finished dinner in time for some to catch
the end of the game. It was fun to watch everyone recreating the winning shot. What
an incredible evening. It was so much fun.
Sunday morning was again sunny for everyone to begin leaving. A few of us that just
could not say goodbye stayed for another night and wound down. An exhilarating game
of lawn darts next to the Holiday House was fun. The event was a huge success. Many
kudos for persevering the weather, to everyone for all your help and volunteering to

The Holiday House has officially been designated as the
most sought after and desired trailer of this century. At
least by Forrest Bone.

How often are we searching for the just perfect designer fabric to decorate our home,
canned ham or modern rig? Just released May 2011, are three colorful new designs
with vintage trailers for you to choose from. The three new fabric designs are produced
by Elizabeth's Studio of NJ. The images in the fabric were taken from different original

Down the Road
After receiving some complaints from attendees of some of the posted rallies at our site, we felt
that we needed to designate the events that are Official TCT Gatherings.
The designation of “Official” TCT Gatherings is probably overdue. We have been promoting,
through our website, just about everything that is submitted and have not been as clear as we
should be about the events that are generated by our regional representatives and from time to
time by TCT members.
The qualifications for a listing as an official TCT Gathering will probably be modified as it is a
work in progress, but for now the following guidelines will be in place:
1. The Gathering is hosted by a Regional Representative or an active TCT member
2. TCT membership is a requirement for attendance. Membership requirements must be
clearly stated and collection of the Tin Can Tourists membership fee must be part of the
rally registration process. Note: when the staff at Camp Dearborn asked callers for site
reservations, many falsely said they were active members to secure a site thereby
getting a price break granted to TCT and preventing a member from reserving that site.
3. The Regional Representative will be the clearing house for area events and recommend
events that they feel meet the guidelines for the Official designation. The Regional
Representative should be kept informed about the event's overall organization.
4. Concourses will be limited to the Annual Gathering and Regional Rallies. TCT purchases
the awards and provides some judging guidelines and wants to keep such awards
“special” by limiting the number of such events. It is up to the Regional Representative
as to whether they want to provide a concours for attendees. Each geographical area is
unique and the Regional Representative is best suited to decide if such an activity is to
be provided.

The purpose of this database is for TCT members to be able to provide information to
prospective insurance companies regarding “agreed value” or to assist you in dealing with an
appraiser for a letter to an insurance company either for obtaining coverage or making a claim.
The data base is just getting started, but it needs your information to be helpful.
To be helpful there needs be many more records entered.
TCT Campground Friendly Program
This program is growing - make a recommendation
This program allows select and member referred campgrounds to express their support
of vintage trailers and motor coaches by joining TCT and listing their campground as a "Tin
Can Tourists’ Friendly" facility.
By enrolling and becoming members, you are expressing your support of our stated goal
"the promotion and preservation of vintage trailers and motor coaches." Campgrounds will do
this by supporting TCT and by encouraging owners of vintage rigs to patronize their
campgrounds. This support will buck the current trend noted in a recent Trailer Life magazine
that discussed that a number of parks are not allowing coaches over 12 years old to camp at
their facilities and that some campgrounds are available for Class "A" motorhomes, only. We
became aware of such practices shortly after TCT was renewed in 1998, but restrictive camps
are currently increasing at an alarming rate.
TCT is taking an active role in the identification of vintage friendly campgrounds because
the original Tin Canners experienced this type of discrimination at municipal parks across the US
during the late 1920‟s through the 1930‟s.
By joining TCT as a vintage friendly campground, your location and amenities will be
accessible to all website visitors via a directory. A regular Tin Can Tale‟s newsletter feature will
spotlight a member campground.

Gathering, send in the registration form for the Fall Campout and get on
the list to reserve a site.
Lincoln Highway Centennial Celebration
The centennial celebration will occur in 2013. Car caravans will embark from Time‟s
Square in the east and Lincoln Park, San Francisco from the west. We would like to
participate with vintage trailers and motor coaches. To accomplish this, we need
volunteers to work with the Lincoln Highway Association in setting up various stops
along the route. From the east, we need volunteers for New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio,
Indiana, Illinois, Iowa and Nebraska. From the west we need someone to coordinate
the caravan and representatives for California, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Nebraska.
Both caravans are to merge at Kearney, Nebraska on Sunday, July 1st. The celebration
will continue in Kearney through July 4th.
