Spike Island was used as used as a monastic settlement, British and later Irish military fortification, convict depot and from 1985 to 2004 as a civilian prison. Tours of the island take place each day and the boat over leaves from Kennedy Pier at 13:00 and 14:00 returning at approixmatley 15:30 and 16:30 respectively. Should you not wish to partake in a guided tour there is always the option of getting the same boat over and taking in the walking trail around the fort, going for a picnic and admiring the views of Cork Harbour at your own pace!
