Songs From The Black Cedar Hills
For three generations, the Gonnie family have lived amongst the rising buttes and hills of an area of the
Navajo Nation called Black Cedar Hills. Named for those lands that have been the family stronghold for
decades, this recording brings together prolific Diné songmaker Louie Gonnie with brother Dewey Gonnie
and cousin Logan Yazzie to honor their family’s vibrant lineage of song and prayer. From the embers of the
fireplace of the Native American Church emerge these potent songs of inner healing and transformation.
The locales of White Cone and Black Cedar Hills are known for being home to respected elders, traditional
singers and visual artists. Likewise, the Gonnie family maintains a singing tradition with a sound all to its
own. The Gonnie family sound and the spirit of their ancestral lands are the centerpieces of this newest
recording by award-winning Native American singer Louie Gonnie. Gonnie is joined by relatives Dewey
Gonnie and Logan Yazzie, both noted singers and songmakers in their own right. Together their singing and
compositions touch the listener in the heart and provide spiritual nourishment for those on the Peyote Road.

Awalom Gerbremariam
Awesome Tapes
From Africa
Desdes
At the age of 28, Awalom Gebremariam arrived in the United States, following a years-long journey
from Eritrea. He’d made it to a refugee camp in Ethiopia several years ago and eventually attained
asylum status for passage to America. But before he left his hometown, Eritrea’s capital Asmara, he
made his first and only recording so far, Desdes. Awalom completed Desdes in 2007, not long before
he departed Eritrea. Because Awalom left after the recording he never received any money for cassette and CD sales. But he also didn’t get to find out how much of an impact the songs have had
locally. His songs appear to focus on love, but Awalom isn’t speaking about romantic love per se.
Much of the music Awalom heard growing up was intertwined with Eritrea’s difficult and contentious
split from Ethiopia. He spent years waiting for the chance to escape economic and political turmoil at
home. Now 29 and living in North Carolina, Awalom works in a restaurant and plans to bring his music
to Eritrean communities across North America as well as newer listeners with whom his powerful
sounds and remarkable journey will deeply resonate.

Explorer Of The World
FRANCES
ENGLAND
What if we became adventurers in our own backyard? That’s what award-winning children’s singer/songwriter Frances England started wondering not so long ago. In an era where so many of us float through the
world with our noses in our phones as the colors of our neighborhoods slide past in a blur, England imagined
a joyful antidote.
This is the curiosity that lights up Explorer of the World. For two years England took walks around San
Francisco and, with a handheld microphone, recorded an array of sounds: the bucket drum that kickstarts
“Street Life” was played by a street performer on Market Street, then looped throughout the track. The
ambient urban sounds of “City Don’t Sleep” were recorded on late night walks through North Beach. These
noises - along with the beats of a couple of salvaged drum machines - would form the vivacious foundations of the album.

Wide Majestic Aire
The Trembling Bells are back with Wide Majestic Aire; a seven-track mini-album which acts as a companion piece to Sovereign Self and cements their reputation as one of Britain’s most exciting and exploratory
groups.
“‘Wide Majestic Aire’ is among my favourite songs that I’ve written,” says the band’s founder and leader Alex
Neilson of the title track. This romantic ballad, sung by Lavinia Blackwall, sees the compass of the band’s
music swing back in the direction of folk after the prog and acid rock of Sovereign Self. It is in some ways
archetypally Trembling Bells in its evocation of the landscapes of Yorkshire and Oxford and its invocation of
great artists of the past - Larkin, Blake, Lorca and Turner. Such a sweet and melodic song could function
as a gateway drug to the rest of the band’s music, which is to be welcomed as there is much to explore in
their rich back catalogue.
Trembling Bells, in 2016, are carving their own path through contemporary culture. Their huge creative
ambition sees them forever pushing deeper and deeper into their art, and there is a compulsive quality to
Neilson’s songwriting that - like the Aire, wide and majestic - just keeps flowing. “We have,” he says, “a
frenzied, ferocious attitude towards life and work.”

ROUTES
With his warm, drawling vocals and downhome charm, Texas country music innovator Lefty Frizzell was
Hank Williams’ only serious rival in the early 1950s, when Lefty made history by dominating the Top Five
with 3 concurrent hits in the early 1950’s. He exerted a profound influence on every subsequent generation
of singers, from George Jones to Merle Haggard and George Strait. This newly-compiled import compilation
captures the singer at his early peak and into his sensational early 1960’s return to form, capturing Frizzell
at his irresistible best.

Fake Four
Factoria
“The ruins of the failed city of Factoria lie under the residential subdivision of Silverwood Heights in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, the hometown of producer extraordinaire Graham Murawsky (aka Factor Chandelier).
Just prior to World War I, Chicago entrepreneur Robert E. Glass ventured north with dreams of building an
elaborate industrial city in a formerly typhoid-riddled secure electrical power turned Factoria into a ghost
town. Inspired by the obscure story of the Magic City that never was, Murawsky has crafted a 13-track
album that pays homage to Factoria and wonders what could have been. On the Factoria LP, Murawsky’s
follow-up to the 2013 concept album Woke Up Alone, he builds a city of expansive, sample-free beats that
bang with punishing drums and industrial clatter at one moment and exude a melodic, pastoral calm the
next. The sounds shift on the album in accordance with the hope that the city began with and the wartime
entropy that engulfed it. Recorded and mixed by Factor at his Chandelier Studios in Saskatoon, the album
incorporates the bass of Enver Hampton, violin and guitar from The Pxrtals, and guest vocals from a host
of Fake Four family and friends. Factoria opens up with“The Magic City”, a glossy, post-apocalyptic instrumental reminiscent of Ratatat segueing into Kirby Dominant’s geographical cure pondering on the upbeat
title track. Open Mike Eagle brings his emotive, pensive musings to “Dozer II” while Awol One, Gregory
Pepper, and Ceschi reunite over the funky bass of“Noise Band”, a gloomy, self-deprecating sequel to their
2009 collaboration with Factor on“Back Then”. Myka 9 explores the concept of building through an abstract
historical context on“Shoulders of Giants” before “Old Organs” closes out the record with crashing drums,
eerie organs, and wraith-like wails. What may have drove Glass to Factoria, beyond monetary gain, is the
desire to create something in his vision, to build a city of hallowed ground, Factor has built a decade and a
half worth of beats for Canadian comrades, west coast underground legends, and indie rap cult heroes from
all over the map. Augmented by Murawsky’s chemistry with emcees he has worked with for years, Factoria
is a beacon illuminating the streets that paved over the ruins of the Magic City.

The Herms
Narnack
Welcome All Tourists
The Herms’ new album, Welcome All Tourists, begins with “Parades,” a surfy “House of The Rising
Sun” set in the blood-soaked sands of sunny Los Angeles. Thus the journey begins as The Herms
create a new world of weird scenes, characters & environmental altitudes/attitudes that dive into the
altered dimensions of Son of Sam’s master demon, General Jack of the Cosmos, with “General Jack.”
From the anthemic “Ready/Set 94,” to the bipolar quiet/loud monster breaths in “Bezlo,” the bossa
nova “Sounds Below” evoking The Kinks & Arctic Monkeys, to the western expansion of “Get On (part
II)” conjuring themes of Westworld if it were set on Hollywood Blvd. Finally, the modular comedown
of “Autopos” rounds things out just right as the sun sets. As John Dwyer of Thee Oh Sees puts it: “No
one sounds like The Herms. No one sounds like Matt Lutz.”

RECORDINGS
Bootstraps is a testament to the idea that good songs always find their audience. The Los Angelesbased band, specializes in what Rolling Stone called “compelling, emotionally gripping material”
while naming them “a band worth watching closely.” Even before the release of the band’s 2014
self-titled debut, Bootstraps’ music had been featured prominently in TV and film as their breakout
record won over the industry’s most selective audience. Last year, after reimagining a cover of
Whitney Houston’s classic “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” for Grey’s Anatomy, Bootstraps took
to the studio to explore an entire record in this vein. Their forthcoming record HOMAGE is about
deconstructing familiar tunes and re-framing them in what Liza Richardson (Award Winning Music
Supervisor and KCRW DJ) calls an “instantly likable, intelligent and signature” sound that is often
compared to Ray LaMontayne, with hints of Bon Iver and The National. “I hated the idea of doing a
‘covers’ record,” singer Jordan Beckett said, “if you’re talking about American Idol karaoke renditions… rather, we were inspired by the Emmylou Harris album Wrecking Ball that applied Daniel
Lanois’ ambient style of production to country, folk songs.” This inspiration is heard within HOMAGE
as he and bandmate David Quon (Mikky Ekko, Banks) seem to push against traditional production
with great success as they shed new musical and melodic light on these tracks. Using lush, atmospheric instrumentation, this is a record that seems perfectly suited for a long drive up the coast
at dusk; a place where Bootstraps’ music seems to testify the loudest. And it’s on these highways,
that HOMAGE is sure to find a wide and captive audience.

‘you could call it a first-love experience.’ The idea came to realisation in 2008 after meeting the band Dirty

Clint Mansell - High-Rise
Golden Globe and Grammy nominated composer Clint Mansell’s brooding, edgy and beautifully unsettled
orchestral score to Ben Wheatley’s acclaimed film adaptation of J.G Ballard’s High-Rise - Starring Tom
Hiddleston, Jeremy Irons, Sienna Miller, Luke Evans, Elisabeth Moss, High-Rise is a visionary tale of human
society slipping into extreme violence. The once-peaceful residents of a desirable apartment block quickly
spiral into a world ruled by primal urges in which elevators become vicious battlegrounds and cocktail parties degenerate into brutal raids on “enemy” floors.
Described by Hollywood Reporter as “a lustrous retro-classical score bursting with ironic good cheer”, Clint
Mansell’s music has a meaty, steadfast presence throughout the visual spectacular of the savage societal
breakdown.
Former Pop Will Eat Itself frontman, Clint Mansell is best known for his work with long-time collaborator
Darren Aronofsky (Requiem for a Dream, Black Swan, The Fountain, Noah). He also scored Duncan Jones’
Directorial debut Moon, and has lent his talent to films as diverse as Filth, Faster, and Last Night.

NoGeo
As half of Teengirl Fantasy, Logan Takahashi is best known for making glassy, expansive tracks. On his debut
solo album, NoGeo however, he creates an intimate world of fertile, furtive rhythms. Throughout the album,
techno-tinged patterns unfurl with zeal and digital melodies slowly rise and fall. If the music of Teengirl
evokes widescreen, technicolor club scenes, NoGeo is a zoomed-in study of timbre, rhythm, and melody.
Much of NoGeo was composed using Elekrton’s Monomachine, which contributes to its minimalist aesthetic. There’s a uniformity to the tracks on NoGeo; though each has its own distinct, vibrant shape, all of
them are cut from the same cloth - built on a sturdy rhythmic foundation that’s ornamented with buoyant
candescent, sounds. “People talk a lot about borderlessness in dance music, and indeed I’ve always been
most drawn to music that exists in or a works to create new grey areas,” Takahashi explains. “From the
late ‘80s Japanese Neo Geo genre to the early ‘00s Brooklyn tabletop electronics scene, I’ve always been
inspired by the notion of being able to create your own vocabulary.

drenched guitar melodies. Following on from his 2013 debut album ‘How Many Padmes Hum’ the 10-track
album sees the 21-year old bedroom producer joining the Flying Nun roster and expanding his focus to
incorporate all forms of pop music from ethereal shoegaze to walls of psychedelic distortion. Taking cues
from his fellow indie dreamers like DIIV and Wild Nothing, Zen Mantra has a pure pop energy, an expansive
sound and plenty of hooks. Simply put Zen Mantra will make you feel warm and fuzzy.

Through relentless touring and multiple album recordings, Portland based Peter Broderick has established
himself as a contemporary composer, known for his innate gift as a musical medium to picking up any
instrument, turning his musings into poignant songs. The scope of Peter’s work is vast – his recordings and
original score work currently feature in dance arrangements, art installations, films and documentaries. He
collaborated with many like-minded contemporaries such as Nils Frahm and Greg Haines, and featured
on Clint Mansell’s Last Night soundtrack. Peter’s signature emotional depth cuts through any instrument to
create stirring, personal music that is full of artistic detail. Currently an artist in residence at Sirius Arts Centre
in Cobh, Ireland, 2016 has much in store for Peter. Created in 2011 for Jennifer Anderson and Vernon Lott’s
spell binding documentary film on five unsolved murders in Idaho, the soundtrack takes the listener through

Mavericks
‘Mavericks’ EP is a deconstructed and beautifully crafted take on the trap sound, using a dramatic sense of
space and melody that gives the EP an epic feel plus an attention to sonic detail that makes tracks move
like they’re alive, avoiding all clichés. ‘Mavericks 1’ opens with a lush repetitive string melody, dropping into
tense atmosphere; ‘Still’ uses the space between notes, unusual configurations of tuning and tone draw the
track apart and let every note shimmer in dark space. The steel pan melody and spiralling snares of ‘Dough’,
manage to remind of vintage Black Dog, rolling out emotively over bass and drums. ‘Tozko Paran’ is trap reimagined as a delicate cyborg waltz and ‘Cataphract’ featuring Kuedo, runs a twisting, turning melody over
unsettling chords, dubby drums and a bumpy ride bass that pumps like a fearful heart. The EP finishes with
‘Chunk’, its glassy plodding melody rattling out over a desolate atmosphere and slowed down fight-game
phrases. An astonishing debut from a name you’ll hear much more of this year.

“A Book Of Flying” marks Kyson’s return to Friends of Friends and the follow-up to 2013’s “The Water’s
Way”. 11 roomy, beatific songs are rounded around Kyson’s delicate vocal work, updating classic folk tropes
with modern verve. Composed entirely by Kyson, the album is a sort of grown up bedroom album, full
of contemplative instrumentation and songwriting that tugs at intrinsically human heartstrings. Whereas
Kyson’s music has touched on the dancefloor in the past, A Book Of Flying gives in entirely to his inwardlooking proclivities and the result is his most complete work to date, a work of contemporary folk that paints
a fluid picture of Kyson the artist.

Keeps
Old Flame
Brief Spirit
Keeps are a band from Nashville, TN, formed in the serendipitous meeting of Gusti Escalante and Robbie
Jackson on their first day of college. Writing a song the day they met in a dorm, it didn’t take long for the two
kindred spirits to find a wonderful balance of mutual influences. Melding the melody and charisma of artists
such as David Bowie, Echo and the Bunnymen and J.A.M.C. with the earnest nostalgia of classic Americana,
Keeps soon moved their kaleidoscopic dream pop to the stage. Their confident and emotive energy caught
on with locals, and Keeps’ were quickly tapped to open for trending artists such as Tennis, Alex Bleeker, Coin,
Craft Spells and more. Now, with college finished or put aside, Gusti and Robbie are prepared to release their
debut album ‘Brief Spirit’. The record, self-produced over a handful of long nights, is filled with the strong
melody, power, and atmospheric arrangements fans expect live. What listeners may not expect is a hint of
the magical kinship so wonderfully realized in their live performance that makes Keeps a truly special band.

I Can Be Cool b/w Version

The Slow Light
Four years in the making The Slow Light is All India Radio’s tenth studio album, and their return to the Minty
Fresh label. All India Radio’s Martin Kennedy infuses the album’s fuzzy dreamgaze and slow motion beats
with “distinctive shadings of Ennio Morricone and Brian Eno” (Magnet magazine) and “the ambient-hop
signatures of DJ Shadow, Tortoise and Thievery Corporation. The resulting narcotic musical textures are
capable of oating listeners to galaxies far, far away.” (Wired)The album features the return of Selena Cross
who sang the band’s fan favorite frack “Four Three” from the Minty Fresh album Echo Other. The album also
features the vocal debute of Martin Kennedy’s twelve year old daughter Hollie Houlihan-McKie on the track
“Galaxy of Light”All India Radio’s music has been featured in TV series CSI, One Tree Hill, The Lying Game,
Emmerdale, Bondi Rescue and many more. Frontman Martin Kennedy is also known for his collaborations
with Steve Kilbey of The Church. The Slow Light features artwork by 1960’s visionary artist Victor Atkins (who
won the 1969 Society of Illustrators Illustrator Award for his striking ‘Miles in The Sky’ Miles Davis LP cover).
This is the rst LP cover Atkins has produced since the 1970s.

Principe Discos
Chapa Quente
Marfox and Príncipe have come a long and happy way since his (and ours) debut with the appropriately
titled EP “Eu Sei Quem Sou” in late 2011. The raw and more minimal sound of the producer’s formative
years has mutated into a complex web of influences and new sounds. His scope has enlarged and yet
Marfox retains the most crucial quality: he does not forget his roots. You will notice differences in such tracks
as “Unsound” (reflecting the festival in Poland where things really started to heat up), with its metallic harshness and even the bright, shiny, retro-futurist “Tarraxo Everyday”; also, “Kassumbula” and “Cobra Preta”
both display a similar kind of sci-fi dissonace we can’t quite place our finger on. Marfox’s musical evolution
has been a staggering and beautiful process to behold. More skills bring more thrills and the overall feel of
“Chapa Quente” is that of a perpetual chase scene on a New Lisbon constantly reorganized by the pull of
different cultures, something that resonates with Marfox’s upbringing in the now demolished shantytown
of Quinta da Vitória, where he came of age among neighbors who had emigrated from India, Pakistan, São
Tomé e Príncipe or Cabo Verde, admittedly having informed his sound aesthetics and practice. One stop only
to catch some Sun (“Tarraxo Everyday”) but all the rest runs faster than you and us. Godspeed.

EP Collection
In Fall 2013, Katy Morley (former singer of Gayngs) stepped into a machine with a box of old instruments
and a pair of borrowed headphones. In Spring 2015, Morly came out. Subsisting mostly on native Minnesotan vegetation and a deep wintery sadness, she abandoned academia and a sensible career in neuroscience to follow an irrepressible drive to fuse emotion with sound. Morly’s EP Collection 12” combines her
first EP (released last August) with her upcoming EP (to be released April 8) to provide a rounded picture of
her powerful explorations into the transient space between joy and melancholy, major and minor, rhythm
and flow. Morly will be playing a host of SXSW shows this March before embarking on a series of solo dates.

Paperweights
Roo Panes is a young British songwriter with a guitar to his chest and a heart swelling with hopes and
dreams. A common on-paper pitch, perhaps, and one sold a thousand times before. But Dorset-born
Panes has something special to offer those willing to wait a while for their favourite songs to settle into
place.”Paperweights” is the follow up to Panes’ debut album “Little Giant.” It’s a sound matured but no
less honest - rich succinct songwriting that demands you stop and really listen.Panes isn’t operating at the
vanguard of a cutting-edge, ultimately transient scene worthy of clicks for the next few months. He doesn’t
set out to trick his audience in any way - what you hear is succinct honest songwriting, from a place of deep
personal expression, resonating with universal truths and values.

Hieroglyphic Being Remixes - 12”
When writing my wishlist of possible remixers for the tracks off the “Principe del Norte” album, Jamal Moss
aka Hieroglyphic Being was one of the first names that popped up in my head. I’ve been following him as
a fanboy for years, buying everything I can lay my hands on blindly. With a unique sound and aesthetic that
can be described as both wild and beautiful I was beyond excited to see how he would interpret my music.
I’m over the moon with the 2 remixes he sent us and it’s with pride and joy I present these versions in full
on a total of 24 inches of wax.

Silk Road Assassins

Reflection Spaces
Silk Road Assassins are Tom E. Vercetti, Lovedr0id and Chemist, who met while studying music technology
and composition and discovered they had similar tastes and ideals. The project was formed after they began
experimenting with combining the academic study of sound design with their personal musical interests.
The original aim of the project was to combine their shared interests in grime, drill and club music with film
and game soundtrack composition. The EP follows a loose narrative set in a retrofuturistic/dystopian city,
with development into game music in mind; it’s dance music that has been crafted with an ear for widescreen enveloping sonics. It opens with the scene setting ‘Citadel VI’ dropping into the atmospheric glide of
‘Shaded’ with its camera sounds and energetic bass, kicks and claps. The mood darkens with the punchy
‘Defect’ as the track uncurls through a vortex of gated chords. ‘Cryo Enemy’ returns to a mournful trap with
Gamelan and gongs splashing gently across rolling kicks and snares. ‘Vectors’ luxuriates in deep bass and
trap snares as clouds of chords and arpeggios rise and fall. ’Akwraith’ rolls out with a nervous mood followed by the ambience of ‘Hollow-Point’ which finishes the EP where it started, warm and glowing.
