Our Centre has always been very vocal on the political agendas for moving toward a high standard of quality child care for Albertans. We supported changes to subsidies in 2009, worked with the accreditation team as it made changes, participated with CFSA in 2008 when it reviewed the Regulations for Child Care, as well as mentored many other centres in the province. In 2011 our Centre was recognized with a Certificate of Achievement from the Prime Minister and in 2012 a Certificate of Excellence. On this occasion we shared our vision with the Minister: 1. as a request to review subsidy rates for parents during the economic decline, 2. consider supports to enable caregivers to continue to upgrade, 3. suggested a municipal child care model for the province. 4. a mentorship model that would enable centres such as ours to be leaders in supporting other programs in our Region. ~ Bernice ~ Social Development Plan Goal: Recreational Facilities and programs are available and accessible for all. Summer Time Fun!!! Parks Play Program & Youth on the Move!!! EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT CENTRE, 5024 - 48STREET We have visited each school park this summer, in anticipation of the big move for each Super Snails child from full-time child care to full-time school. This day, we took a picnic lunch and walked to Aurora School for a fun day at the park! The Super Snails went to have some fun and frolic at the Penny Carnival held by the Summer Parks Program on August 19th. The children all came back with blue tongues and lots of stories about the games they played. This was a great afternoon with parents who also came along to join the fun! ~ Bernice ~ Drayton Valley Lifesavers Junior Lifeguard Club Lifesaving Sport is the world's most demanding, multidisciplinary sport in the world; combining athletic ability with Lifesaving Skills and Rescue Equipment. The Parks Play and Youth on the Move programs have wrapped up for the year, but have left behind many positive memories with their participants. Program leaders took part in the Terrifically Trained Leaders camp where they received training in First Aid, High Five and learned fundamental skills for running recreational programs. This learning opportunity is an example of delivering innovative programs for young adult workers as per the Social Development Plan. Parks Play program leaders, Renae and Jade, had a great time playing games, crafting, and staying active with their program participants. Activities included everything from playing outdoor angry birds to parachute ‘popcorn’. Lots of fun was had creating silly masks, pipe cleaner animals and bracelets. The weekday program rotated through five different community parks which included Aspenview, Northview/Peace Park, Rotary, Ivan To/Southview, and Little Lions. Moving program locations each day increased accessibility to the program for those without transportation and highlighted the variety of parks within Drayton Valley. The drop-in program allowed parents the option to stay or leave while their kids were engaged for the morning or afternoon. A free Penny Carnival was held at Little Lions Park as the wrap-up event for Parks Play. The event was open to all ages and over 400 people came to play carnival games, get their face painted, and indulge in sweet cotton candy. A free BBQ kicked off the afternoon which ran until 4:00pm. Luckily the weather cooperated and the sunny skies were the icing on top of the cake for the wonderful afternoon. Youth on the Move also rotated through community parks as well as the 4-S Skate Park. Program leaders Luke and Courtney enjoyed their time interacting with local youth. The 4-S Skate Park was definitely the most popular program location and hosted the Youth on the Move’s wrap-up event, the 4-S Skate Park Jam. Over 35 participants from Drayton Valley and area showed off their skills to earn prizes in bike, scooter, and skateboard categories. The success of both programs could be seen and heard in the smiles and laughs of the participants. A lot of positive feedback from parents has also been received. The success of the programs was due in part to community partnerships formed throughout the summer. Drayton Valley Ford provided a rental truck for transportation and hauling program supplies while DV Rentals provided the outhouses located at each park. Home Hardware donated craft and activity supplies which were put to great use this summer. The programs would not have been possible without funding from Drayton Valley & District FCSS – thank-you for your generous support of Parks Play and Youth on the Move! ~ JeanAnne ~
