We welcome Shawn Quinton and his family to Camp Nutimik!
Last November Shawn Quinton joined our camp leadership team as our year-round, full-time
Program Director. Shawn spent most of his growing-up years in Thunder Bay, Ontario, but most
recently lived in Campbell River, B.C. He trained as Forest Recreation Technician in college, and
later completed a M.A. in Leadership at Trinity Western University. He instructs Nordic skiing,
canoeing, sea kayaking, orienteering, and rock climbing, and has led wilderness trips canoeing,
hiking, rock climbing, sea kayaking, caving, and hiking. Shawn's family includes his wife Kerry
and his children Philip and Sierra.
What other camps have you worked with?
Last summer I directed the “Wild Side” wilderness program of Camp Imadene. I've also been a
board member of Campfire Ministries' Camp Bob, and worked as a guide for Strathcona Park
Lodge leading wilderness trips for groups.
A lot of people move from Manitoba to B.C., but not as many the other way. What
drew you to Manitoba?
I've sensed the call of the Lord to camp ministry, and Nutimik is the camp he led me to work at.
What about Camp Nutimik interests you?
Camp's mission to reach and disciple kids and grow them into leaders fits well with my personal
life calling. While I was working on my Master's degree, God showed me that I should spend my
life using creation to reveal God and teach about him, to draw people into a closer walk with
Jesus. It is a place I can use my gifts and skills to accomplish the purpose God has for me.
I want to be a good dad to my kids, and leading trips took me away from them more than I
wanted. Camp gives me the opportunity to do more training and development and less trip
leading myself.
What do you think of the camp so far?
I led the Winter Reconnect retreat last month, and I was impressed by the staff that came to
work for the weekend. The staff have a heart for the camp, and seem committed to the ministry
of the camp – winning kids to Christ and discipling them.
What goals do you have for the camp program?
I'm an avid outdoorsman, and most of the activities I pursue can hurt you if you aren't paying
attention. I've learned that you always need to think about safety when you're in the outdoors.
Whatever we do at the camp, I want to make sure kids are safe.
I hope to improve our risk management so that we can challenge
kids even more with our activities while making sure they go
home healthy and whole.
These last years I've been around professional guides in top-notch
wilderness tripping organizations, and I want that same
professionalism to be part of our staff at Nutimik, whatever role
they are in. Camp does many things “well enough”, but I want us
to do our work better than well-enough. I want us to be among
the best at what we do.
What are you looking forward to doing for yourself while
you're here?
I love the outdoors, and this area offers a lot. I'm looking forward
to exploring the Whiteshell Park and nearby areas on wilderness
trips with my family. I'm interested to explore Manitoba's caves,
as they're different from the ones I know well. And there is good
ice-climbing fairly close to here in Ontario.
One of Shawn’s passions is
caving. In this photo Shawn
and his son are exploring Main
Scollop Cave on Vancouver
Island.

Building Project Update:
The winter weather has been putting up a bit of a fight these
past months as we have been moving ahead with our house
project (which will be the new home to Shawn and his family).
The building going up will be the program director’s house with
an attached two bedroom suite giving us additional
accommodations for our summer speakers and staff. As the cold
weather lets up, we will see progress made by the electrician,
plumbers and roofers.
