Last November Shawn
Quinton joined our camp leadership team as our year-round, fulltime Program Director. Shawn spent most of his growing-up years in
Thunder Bay, Ontario, but most recently lived in Campbell River, B.C. He
trained as Forest Recreation Technician in college, and later completed a M.A. in
Leadership at Trinity Western University. He instructs Nordic skiing, canoeing, sea
kayaking, orienteering, and rock climbing, and has led wilderness trips canoeing,
hiking, rock climbing, sea kayaking, and caving. Shawn's family includes his wife
Kerry and his children Philip and Sierra.
What other camps have you worked with?
Last summer I directed the “Wild Side” wilderness program of Camp Imadene. I've
also been a board member of Campfire Ministries' Camp Bob, and worked as a
guide for Strathcona Park Lodge leading wilderness trips for groups.
A lot of people move from Manitoba to B.C., but not as many the other way.
What drew you to Manitoba?
I've sensed the call of the Lord to camp ministry, and Nutimik is the camp he led
me to work at.
What about Camp Nutimik interests you?
Camp's mission to reach and disciple kids and grow them into leaders fits well with
my personal life calling. While I was working on my Master's degree, God showed
me that I should spend my life using creation to reveal God and teach about him, to
draw people into a closer walk with Jesus. It is a place I can use my gifts and skills
to accomplish the purpose God has for me.
I want to be a good dad to my kids, and leading trips took me away from them
more than I wanted. Camp gives me the opportunity to do more training and
development and less trip leading myself.
What do you think of the camp so far?
I led the Winter Reconnect retreat last month, and I was impressed by the staff that
came to work for the weekend. The staff have a heart for the camp, and seem
committed to the ministry of the camp – winning kids to Christ and discipling them.
What are you looking forward to doing for yourself while you're here?
I love the outdoors, and this area offers a lot. I'm looking forward to exploring the
Whiteshell Park and nearby areas on wilderness trips with my family. I'm interested
to explore Manitoba's caves, as they're different from the ones I know well. And
there is good ice-climbing fairly close to here in Ontario.
What do you want to see in the camp program?
Camp has great opportunities to develop the skills to enjoy the
outdoors. A lot of what we offer will stay the same, because
kids enjoy it. I want to add to what we have already. For now, I
want to add an orienteering skill to the summer schedule.
Camp did that in the past, and I want to start it again.
Also, I want to do even more outdoor cooking in cooking skill,
and develop the wilderness skill to really teach campers how to
love the outdoors. Very few of our kids choose our out trip

Everything you love about
Camp Nutimik… WINTERIZED!
We had a fantastic time at Winter Camp! The
cold didn’t stop us from hours of outdoor fun.
We of course had the Great Camp Nutimik
Snow Challenge and the campers couldn’t
get enough of tubing, skiing, snow shoeing,
skating and so much more. After the full day
outdoors, we gathered around the fireplace
for some great singing and sessions with our
speaker Peter Bergs. Thanks to everyone
who came out and made it a weekend to
remember.
Make sure you mark it on the calendar for
next year!

“Just wanted to tell you my two sons went to
the winter camp and ABSOLUTELY LOVED
it… They loved all the activities, the counselors, the food,
EVERYTHING!!!!!
Great
Idea. They will be coming back in the summer
of course and now the winter… Thanks so
much for having such an awesome camp that I
can send them to that I can trust they will be
safe, well cared for, and have lots of fun.”

You’ll hear us say that Camp Nutimik has something to offer everyone, and it’s
true. Our Jr. Mini campers experience our basic Classic Camp as early as age
7. Each year when our campers return, they are able to build on the skills and knowledge learned in previous years; from feather awards in
archery to cooking skills to their canoeing ability and so much more. Not only are they building on specific skills, they are also learning
broader skills in wilderness survival (by tenting for a night with their cabin group or learning to cook over a fire) and gaining leadership
insights (as they work in teams and learn to communicate with their peers). From Classic Camp to Leadership Camps to Wilderness
Expeditions, to volunteers and staff, there is an adventure waiting for you at Camp Nutimik!
Camperships are available through
Union Gospel Mission and the
Sunshine Fund.
After a long winter, get your boat out of storage and round up the
guys for a relaxing weekend on the lake with friends at our 2nd

accommodations, meals, prizes, and the lake. Just bring your
boat and a group of friends.
Retreat Cost: Ages 6-11 $65.00, Ages 12+ $95.00
