On Thursday, October 30, Benedict Cumberbatch stars as The Creature and Jonny Lee Miller plays The Doctor. The roles will be reversed for the screening on November 2. National Theatre Live’s smash-hit broadcast of Danny Boyle’s Frankenstein, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller in alternating roles as The Doctor and The Creature, returns to cinemas as part of the National Theatre’s 50th anniversary celebration! This stunning adaptation of Mary Shelly’s classic horror tale Frankenstein enjoyed a sell-out run at the National Theatre in 2011, and went on to win awards including the 2012 Olivier Award for Best Actor for Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller. Oscar-winning filmmaker Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire) directs a sensational production with Benedict Cumberbatch (Star Trek: Into Darkness, BBC’s Sherlock) and Jonny Lee Miller (Trainspotting, CBS’s Elementary) alternating roles as Victor Frankenstein and his creation. Urgent concerns of scientific responsibility, parental neglect, cognitive development and the nature of good and evil are embedded within this thrilling and deeply disturbing classic gothic tale. (Running time: approximately 135 mins. with no intermission, Not Rated/Contains mild violence and partial nudity) Digital The world looks to Portland, Oregon as an example of how bicycle culture can blossom out of the ruinous freeways of caroriented civilization. Aftermass is the first feature documentary to explore the events, people, politics, and social changes that led to Portland becoming the first major bicycle city in the United States. Aftermass features many of the leaders and major participants behind the growth of bicycling ridership since 1971. The narrative demonstrates the complex dynamic throughout the 1990s between advocacy organizations, politicians, city planners, and the then new, grassroots Critical Mass ride. The film is full of smiling faces on two wheels, but also explores the controversies, setbacks, and bumps along the way, including riots, political roadblocks, and an illegal police spy. The film provides new and vital insights into Portland’s transportation history as well as into paths other cities can follow to healthy planning and a green future. The New York Film Critics Series, broadcast to 50 selected major markets, takes place exclusively in cinemas and is never available on TV or online. Oscar-winners Shirley MacLaine and Christopher Plummer star in this remake of the 2008 Spanish/Argentinian hit of the same name, playing late-in-life lovers who see the world anew through each other. Elsa (MacLaine) is a feisty widow with a thing for Fellini, and a tendency to stretch the truth a few extra notches. Fred (Plummer) is a dyed-in-thewool curmudgeon, seemingly content to grumble at anything within the proximity of his spacious New Orleans apartment. When a housewaresrelated mishap brings these next-door neighbors together, the sparks that fly are far from the love-at-first-sight variety. As the two come into increased contact with each other’s considerable quirks, however, some exhilarating new possibilities begin to enter the picture, and Elsa’s fantasy of re-creating the iconic Fontana di Trevi scene from Fellini’s La Dolce Vita just might become a reality. Bolstered by an exceptional supporting cast (including Marcia Gay Harden, Scott Bakula, George Segal, and Chris Noth), MacLaine and Plummer generate a unique chemistry that’s a wonder to behold. Viewers with a fondness for La Dolce Vita may wish to have a few extra tissues handy. It is dedicated to producing inspiring events in a collaborative environment and to nurturing the long-term success of better, smarter movies. Each NYFCS screening brings prestigious, live New York City screenings of soon-to-be-released films to the best independent cinemas in America. These screening events are moderated by Rolling Stone film critic Peter Travers, and include a preview screening of a new film prior to its national release, interviews with talent from the film and special behind the scenes content. These screenings are scheduled to take place once a month and will happen approximately 12 times per year. On the first Friday of each month at 9:00pm, Red Meat’s Max Cannon hosts the biggest, baddest short film contest in town – just bring us your short films and we’ll play them on the largest movie screen in Southern Arizona! In case you’ve never been to a First Friday Shorts show, here are the rules: We’ll play anything you’ve made that’s under 15 minutes long and is brought to us on a DVD, thumb drive or BLU-ray (one film per person, and DVDs must be playable on a regular DVD player and films on drives need to be in by 8:00pm). Submissions are only taken on the day of the event, and all entries MUST BE RECEIVED PRIOR TO THE START OF THE ACTUAL SHOW (we cannot accept films after the show has begun, or during intermission). All films are played in the order they’re received. Every film is guaranteed to play for 3 minutes, but after that the audience can call for the dreaded “gong” if they’re displeased. If the gong is struck, our intrepid host stops the film and the next movie begins. But don’t despair … if your film is gonged, you can re-work it and bring it back to see if the changes you’ve made have pleased the audience. This is a great way for filmmakers to try out new ideas and see how an actual audience responds, so take advantage. You cannot submit the same film more than once unless it has been re-worked. Remember, the audience decides the winner each and every month, so keep them happy! PLEASE NOTE: We only take the first 15 films that are brought in each month and the spots have been filling up really fast. We start taking submissions as soon as we open the day of the show so get your films in early!
