Theories of Communications (Hampton Press), Media and Formal Cause (NeoPoiesis Press) and The Human Equation (BPS Books) are currently available and three other books are in preparation. McLuhan will be lecturing at the Vatican for the third time in June. He has taught at Harris Institute since 1994 and is the college's Director of Media Studies. Visit ericmcluhan.com Dr. Eric McLuhan B.Sc., M.A., Ph.D. Barbados Scholarships The Copyright Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (COSCAP) Foundation will announce two scholarships for Barbadian students to attend Toronto's Harris Institute. The college's president, John Harris, will attend and speak at the awards dinner on April 23 at the Hilton Barbados. Starting in 2012, two students from Barbados will receive full scholarships for either the one-year Audio Production Program (APP) or the Arts Management Program (AMP). For information on COSCAP visit coscap.org Mike Denney Unique Mentor Program Two of Canada's national music industry associations have partnered to create an unprecedented mentoring program for senior Harris students. The Music Managers Forum (MMF) Canada and the Urban Music Association of Canada (UMAC) will present one-on-one mentoring sessions for students with international and national leaders from all facets of the music industry. A 'networking lunch' with members of MMF and UMAC and a panel discussion by the guest mentors will follow the one-on-one sessions. Grad Coordinating ‘Ultimate MC’ Colleen Brennan is the Production Coordinator for the 16-part Hip Hop documentary series that will air on Aux TV starting in June. 'The Ultimate MC' focuses on the history and future of Canada's Hip Hop culture and features a competition of artists selected in Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver and Montreal. The event at Clinton's Tavern on March 31st featured Willie Soraine, John Mavro, Paige Deem and The Combat with MC Hugh Wilson. Visit the new Confidential Records website created by Susan Deem at confidential-records.com Goodman Wins Troiano Scholarship Toronto's Alex Goodman has won the 2011 Domenic Troiano Guitar Scholarship. He receives $10,000 to pursue post-secondary guitar education. Goodman's most recent release, 'Convergence', was listed as one of the top ten jazz records of 2010. Trustees for the Troiano Scholarship are Kevin Breit, Rik Emmett, John Harris, Shawne Jackson-Troiano, Bernie LaBarge, Alex Lifeson, Jim Norris and Frank Troiano. Bond was the top graduate of 'The Recording Workshop' in Chillicothe, Ohio in 1984, has worked with Loreena McKennitt, Rush, Blue Rodeo and The Stratford Festival and is a 3rd degree black belt in karate. Nath is the General Manager of Dale Speaking Ltd., has worked with Broken Social Scene, Alexisonfire and Feist and is an Honours Graduate of Harris. Bond is teaching Signal Processing and Nath is teaching Video & Radio Promotion. Willard Bond Demetrius Nath Grad’s National Music Competition Pavlo has launched a cross Canada music competition with Grammy Award Winner Liberty Silver and 'Smooth Jazz Broadcaster of the Year' Vickie Van Dyke. The 25 finalists will receive cash awards and the winner will perform with Pavlo at Roy Thomson Hall on February 24, 2012. A distinguished panel of 10 judges will adjudicate the competition. The deadline for entries is May 15th and the winner will be selected at the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts on July 5th. Simmons was appearing as a feature of 'Advertising Week'. He presented some of the unique marketing strategies he has developed over many years. The first annual event featured international keynote speakers, music industry executive panelists and special concert events at the National Art Gallery. His first label, MDM Recordings, will continue its focus on country artists Jason Kirkness, Jerry Sereda, Chad Brownlee, Jo Hick and Emily Taylor Adams. MDM will present a showcase featuring seven of its artists at The Cadillac Lounge during Canadian Music Week (CMW) on Friday, March 11. The podcast programming features interviews and music of current Harris students. ‘Radio Harris’ was created as part of Kathleen Farley's course 'Digital Culture'. To listen to 'Radio Harris' on iTunes click here MJ Cyr to UK Toronto based recording artist MJ Cyr will be the first Canadian artist to tour in Scotland as part of the International Tour Management program coordinated by students at Harris Institute and the University of the West of Scotland. Cyr has toured extensively in Canada, the US and New Zealand and has released two critically acclaimed CD's, “The Bottom Line” and “Ladders”. Harris did the sound design for Dove's Evolution Campaign, which won a 'Best of the Digital Decade' in NY. Both recordings are nominated for JUNO Awards for 'Rap Recording of the Year'. Kilgour is a member of Backburner Records and performs as 'Fresh Kils'. Caalvin Jno-Finn Grad to Director of Marketing Deddy Setton has been promoted to Director of Marketing at Universal Music Canada. He was previously National Marketing Manager at Universal, Assistant-Artist Marketing Department at Sony BMG and Music Director & Assistant Programming Director at mooma.com. Setton graduated with honours from Harris’ Recording Arts Management program (now Arts Management Program) in 2003. Deddy Setton Grad in Best of Decade Andrew Harris, who did the Sound Design for the 2007 'Dove Evolution' campaign, is part of the creative team being awarded the BEST OF THE DIGITAL DECADE by The One Club at The Museum of Modern Art in New York on January 11. Andrew Harris Grad at Roy Thomson Hall Pavlo will perform at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto on Friday, February 24, 2012. He is currently completing a 48 city cross Canada tour with PRO (Pavlo, Rik Emmett, Oscar Lopez) in support of their JUNO nominated album 'Trifecta'. Pavlo's PBS special, 'Mediterranean Nights' will be broadcast on Bravo on January 10. Laura Wing Grad Wins Marketing Award Paul Fairley's Admiral Entertainment was awarded “Best Marketing Campaign” by Tourism Barrie for the Barrie New Music Fest, which featured 90 artists at 10 venues and special performances by Big Sugar and The Trews. Fairley graduated with honours from Harris Institute in 2005 and earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 'Commercial Music' at the University of the West of Scotland in 2007. Stephen (Sven) Heidinga engineered the 250 versions of the theme music for CTV’s Olympic broadcast over 18 months in Harris Institute’s origianl studio at 296 King E. Stephan Moccio’s ‘Maison du Musique’ has operated the studio since 2002. Heidinga was the first recipient of MIP Certification for completing both programs at Harris with Honours in 2007. He has won a Platinum and 2 Gold Certifications since graduating!!! Heidinga Grad Wins $3,500. Jessica Leigh George was presented with the 2010 ‘Fred Sherratt Award’ and $3,500 at a ceremony at MuchMusic’s MuchOnDemand studio in Toronto. The award, presented annually to 12 outstanding students from across Canada for ‘Excellence in Music & Music Industry Education’ is funded by CTV and administered by the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. Geddes and Jesse Cook wrote, directed, produced and star in “Scarce”, a horror story about cannibal hillbillies. DVD rights to the $430,000 Super 16-mm film have been sold to Anchor Bay Entertainment and the film will be broadcast on Superchannel on October 1, 2008. KPI’s have been published by the government since 1996 to help students evaluate programs at Ontarios’ 191 post secodary institutions. Patrick Duffy won the 2008 CCMA “Album Design of the Year” Award in Winnipeg for Doc Walker’s ‘Beautiful Life’. He has been nominated in the category twenty-two times over the past thirteen years and has won the award an unprecedented eight times. Duffy has taught Graphic Design and Print Production/ Packaging in Harris Institute’s Recording Arts Management (RAM) Program for 12 years. Patrick Duffy McLuhan at Vatican Pope Benedict XVI McLuhan Eric McLuhan has been invited to speak at the Vatican for a second time. He spoke there in May 2008 and will return on March 12, 2009. In 2007 he was presented with the Neil Postman Award in Mexico City for Career Achievement in Public Intellectual Activity. Dr. McLuhan has been Director of Media Studies at Harris Institute for 14 yrs. Garbutt Wins! Don Garbutt has won the “AstoundSound” music competition and the $10,000 award from GenAudio. The winner was determined on how creatively AstoundSound’s 4D audio was applied to a one minute composition. Garbutt has been the Director of Electronic Music at Harris Institute for 19 yrs.
