Since we launched the very first Kirker Italy brochure in 1986 we have spent some 25 years fine-tuning the range of recommended hotels and can honestly say that our passion and enthusiasm for this wonderful country remains as strong as ever. It is, without question, one of our favourite destinations and we are delighted to recommend over 150 properties that have met our very strict criteria for style, comfort and location.Whether you are looking for a charming pensione, a stylish palazzo, or a grand villa in the heart of the countryside, our team of expert consultants would be delighted to help you to create a tailor-made itinerary using just the right combination of travel by air, rail, private transfers; together with advice from the Kirker Concierge to assist with bookings for a delicious dinner at a recommended restaurant, opera tickets or perhaps a private walking tour with an expert local guide. A quick call to 020 7593 2286 or email to concierge@kirkerholidays.com will ensure that all these vital extra elements are taken care of well in advance of your holiday departure. Even to the uninitiated, it is easy to see from a map that Italy is a rather elegant, stylish place – and as all discerning travellers are aware, it can be tricky to know exactly which part to head for next. Our job is to make sure that every Kirker holiday is tailor-made to suit your exact requirements and we look forward to using our first-hand knowledge to create a holiday that achieves exactly the right balance between contemporary comfort, faded elegance and the perfect location. We thoroughly recommend rail travel in Italy and the new high speed train between Rome and Florence has cut the journey time to just over 90 minutes – times between Bologna, Milan and Turin have also been substantially reduced.Whether you wish to stay in two cities with first class rail between destinations, or you prefer to combine a stay in a city with a few nights in a relaxing countryside hotel, all our holidays include transfers by private car, water taxi or car hire if you wish. If you are planning a holiday to mark a special birthday or anniversary, life is far too short not to celebrate in style – in particular, don’t forget the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express train which glides majestically through the Alps and remains the ultimate indulgence for those who wish to celebrate a special occasion in style. If you enjoy visiting museums and art galleries, all our holidays to Venice, Rome or Florence include complimentary museum entrance tickets for the Doge’s Palace, Borghese Gallery and the Uffizi respectively (or a selection of other choices if you prefer), to ensure that you avoid the lengthy queues. As you would expect, there is a long sandy beach and plenty of fashionable restaurants and shops, but it also has a fascinating old town made up of steep streets, covered alleys and atmospheric squares. On Italy’s pine and flower-filled rugged northwest coastline lies Portofino, the prettiest port on the Mediterranean. The Splendido, on the hillside above the village, is our favourite hotel in Europe; its charming sister, the Splendido Mare, has a prime harbour location. Not for the faint-hearted, these hotels are expensive but when you are sitting on the terrace enjoying your dinner in Michael Winner’s favourite restaurant, blending in with the other beautiful people, you will appreciate why the good things in life don’t always come cheap! SANTA MARGHERITA LIGURE Santa Margherita is a lively, little known resort with an elegant piazza and harbour. It is dominated by its castle which overlooks the port. A train journey in either direction is a must – west to Genoa itself, a city of immense style and great beauty, its streets lined by grand, patrician town houses; travelling east will take you to Rapallo and the magnificent scenery of the cinque terre. Portofino, one of the world’s most stylish resorts, is a short taxi ride away. Grand Hotel Miramare Deluxe Grand Miramare stands in a wonderful position in an attractive park that looks out over the Gulf of Tigullio. This pretty seaside village lies at the base of Monte di Portofino, 30 minutes east of Genoa and is similar in style to ones found further south in Cinque Terre. Tall, pastel coloured houses front the harbour and beach and there are plenty of pleasant restaurants where you can sample the local speciality, cheese focaccia. The town benefits from a preservation order that helps to protect its heritage – it remains under the main tourist radar and makes a pleasant alternative to the more glamorous resorts on the Ligurian Riviera.
