Welded Hull Problems
• Hardened aluminum from the extreme heat of welding becomes weak on either side of the weld
and can crack from the weight and vibration of the motor on the transom and the beating of the
waves on the bottom and in the bow if not properly supported.
• Welded infrastructure can completely break loose under the floor cracking the bottom plate of
aluminum and sometimes pulling the welds completely through the bottom.
• Tack welds inside the hull can often be seen on the outside of the hull and these welds sometimes
break along their length or at the corners. The welded pieces would be stronger if welded completely
instead of tacked as a tack weld allows for more flex which stresses it more.
• Welded hull repairs are often more costly and may result in full hull replacements.
