Auxiliary NEWS www.emmcauxiliary.org Attributed to Shirley Chisholm, the first black woman elected to Congress and the first woman to run for the Democratic presidential nomination This quote is posted on our refrigerator at home to remind me of the importance of working to make a difference within the community in which I live. I am delighted to serve as President of the Auxiliary this year and honored to follow in the footsteps of Paula Ballesteros. I look forward to working beside my fellow officers, the Auxiliary Board and with you as members in support of EMMC’s mission of caring for patients, families, communities, and one another. Despite challenging economic conditions, the Auxiliary’s fundraising activities continue to be supported within the community. This month, we will complete our final payment on the Auxiliary’s $500,000 pledge for the EMMC CancerCare of Maine capital campaign. This payment was made possible through money earned last year from the Gift Shop, the Kitchen Tour, and the Winter Beach Ball. Looking ahead, 2012 will be another exciting and busy year for the Auxiliary. We have made a new pledge of $350,000 to support EMMC’s pediatric oncology services and will continue our financial support to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals of EMHS and nursing scholarships at Husson University. In this newsletter you will read about what we’ve been up to and what we are planning for 2012. We invite you as members to be actively involved in our service to the community! In a world that seems increasingly complex and fast-paced, service to others through involvement with the Auxiliary is a way to have fun and make a difference in a significant way right here in our own home town. winter 2012 Volume 1 Issue 1 Board of Directors President Ginger Ward-Green Vice President Helen Genco Past President Paula Ballesteros Secretary Valerie Patch Treasurer Sarah Quirk Members Jennifer Brooker Nancy Careskey Cindy Curran Jan Currier Melissa Gerety Eileen Hernandez Gale Longo Marianne Lynch Susan Nasberg Ann Marie Orr Sherry Roberts Betsy Simpson Danelle Weston I welcome your ideas and input. It was the first time that EMMC Auxiliary participated as a team. Fifteen enthusiastic walkers compromised Team EMMC Auxiliary, and together we raised $2,795 to support local cancer research at EMMC’s Cancer Care of Maine. It was a great day. To put things in perspective, this year there were 636 participants, and more than 50 teams. People could walk, run, bike, or ride a motorcycle to raise money for the cause. (There was also a category for “virtual participants” in case someone couldn’t be there that day.) Overall, donations totaled more than $225,000. Team EMMC Auxiliary walkers were able to bring in the sixth highest amount, and there were only fifteen of us! The team that came in fifth place had 50 members. You can imagine what we could do with even a few more team members! This brings us to the third annual Champion the Cure Challenge on August 18, 2012. We are already getting excited! We are especially eager to have more teammates. www.emmcauxiliary.org Celebrating 2011, Welcoming 2012 Annual Meeting EMMC Auxiliary’s annual meeting was held November 10, 2011 at Wellman Commons in Bangor.
