Supporting the Physically and Emotionally Challenged Welcoming and Integrating Immigrants and Refugees 2 Annual Report 2009 A Letter from Archbishop Timothy M. Dolan Dear Friends of Catholic Charities: Just over a year ago, I became Archbishop of New York. My first goal was to get to know the people here. It has been an amazing year and fulfilling my goal has been immensely rewarding. One of my favorite parts has been visiting those served by Catholic Charities. For instance, on only my third day as Archbishop of New York, I went to a Catholic Charities food pantry in the Highbridge section of the Bronx with one of our great supporters, Rusty Staub. As we distributed healthy food, staff introduced me to hungry neighbors whom they know by name. Not long afterwards, I dedicated a new building at the Cardinal Hayes School in Millbrook, NY and met children whose bodies had been compromised by severe physical disabilities but whose spirits reminded me of God’s love. Then, I enjoyed a morning snack with tiny preschoolers at the Cardinal McCloskey’s Little Angels Head Start program in the Bronx. I got my hair cut – perhaps too much – by talented teens who had gotten into trouble and were given the opportunity to restart their lives fresh at Lincoln Hall in Westchester. I celebrated Christmas with teenagers living with HIV/ AIDS at Incarnation Children’s Center in Washington Heights. During this inspiring first year, I have been reminded of St. Paul’s words. Three things last, he tells us; faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. I have seen love in action at Catholic Charities programs throughout the Archdiocese of New York. Thank you for supporting Catholic Charities’ vital work. I look forward to getting to know you better during the years to come. With prayerful best wishes, I am, Gratefully in Christ, Archbishop Timothy M. Dolan enjoys Christmas with children at the Lawrence Hickey Center of Childhood Development, part of Astor Services for Children & Families, in the Bronx. Most Reverend Timothy M. Dolan Archbishop of New York www.catholiccharitiesny.org 3 A Message from the Chairman of the Board of Trustees John J. Phelan, Jr. Dear Friends: In New York, in our nation and in our homes, we are confronting serious challenges. Catholic Charities serves as a bright light during this difficult time. With a steadfastness that eluded other institutions, Catholic Charities eased the pain so many have undergone during this economic downturn. Catholic Charities stretched resources to feed, shelter and support thousands who had no place else to turn. Our new Archbishop, the Most Reverend Timothy M. Dolan, built on the legacy of Edward Cardinal Egan by supporting and promoting the work of Catholic Charities to help New Yorkers in need. I was grateful for the opportunity Cardinal Egan gave me to serve as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Catholic Charities. I am pleased to work with Archbishop Dolan, to continue our efforts to serve the poor, troubled, frail and oppressed of all religions. None of this would be possible without the leadership of Catholic Charities’ Board of Trustees. The board and our generous benefactors ensure the integrity and quality of Catholic Charities programs and help raise resources required for Catholic Charities to provide its vast array of services to non-Catholics and Catholics alike. Day in and day out, our dedicated staff, those who work in our residences and camps, counsel those in need and serve as executives overseeing multiple programs, functions as the heart of the help Catholic Charities provides. I urge you to look through this annual report and be inspired by Catholic Charities compassionate concern for so many throughout this great metropolitan area. Join us in helping our neighbors in need. Sincerely, John J. Phelan, Jr. Chairman, Board of Trustees 4 Annual Report 2009 John Phelan, Jr., retired chairman and CEO of the New York Stock Exchange, greets Duncan L. Niederauer, CEO and Director of NYSE Euronext. A Report to the Community from the Executive Director Monsignor Kevin Sullivan These uncertain times underscore the value of Catholic Charities. For nearly a century, Catholic Charities has effectively and efficiently improved the lives of New Yorkers in need. A recent New York Times article highlighted that real estate veterans are surviving as their flashier competitors stumble. So too Catholic Charities, with its reliable commitment to serve those in need, continues as an essential stabilizing force as newer agencies are severely buffeted by the current turbulence. The number of those seeking our help surged last year in some neighborhoods by as much as 50%, particularly among those who lost their jobs. Yet with compassion and dignity, day in and day out, Catholic Charities helps people of all religions: hungry children, families without homes, immigrant families separated by thousands of miles, refugees fleeing persecution and adolescents with severe emotional and physical challenges. Serving this growing demand has been hard, very hard, with limited resources. Yet thanks to the generosity of our donors, the creativity of our government partners and the dedication of our staff, Boards and volunteers, we continue to provide help and create hope. Although I worry for the future, I am confident Catholic Charities will be there. I base my confidence on our history of service. This year, Catholic Charities agencies throughout the United States celebrate the centennial of Catholic Charities USA. Many Catholic Charities agencies – especially here in the Archdiocese of New York – have longer histories. As we celebrate this 100-year milestone, we send a clear message. We served those in need in the past; we serve them now and we will continue to serve all who come to our doors – the neglected child, the homeless family and the hungry senior – in the years to come. But serving as a veteran and stabilizing force requires not becoming stale. Innovation, creativity and attention to evolving needs are central to Catholic Charities way of operating. Allow me to highlight some important initiatives Catholic Charities’ agencies have undertaken. Protecting and Nurturing Children and Youth I was born in and love the Bronx, home of the Yankees and the only borough of New York City connected to the mainland. So it troubles me that on so many scales of human need, the Bronx stands out. It houses the poorest congressional district in the nation, one of the highest rates of hunger and asthma and one of the lowest rates of student achievement. In response, Catholic Charities locates the single highest Msgr. Kevin Sullivan on air in his weekly Sirius radio program, JustLove. concentration of its programs, services and agencies here. Feeding the Hungry and Sheltering the Homeless In Hunts Point in the Bronx, Casita Maria partnered with the New York City Board of Education to create an educational and cultural center to nurture future artists. Dedicated in September 2009, its state-ofthe-art facilities, theatre and gallery tripled the number of New York City students served and helped it take a leadership role in the revival of the South Bronx. Calls for help multiply as the hungry and homeless flock to our doors. We witnessed a 20% rise in demand at our neighborhood food pantries, often at the end of pay periods. Fortunately, a portion of Federal stimulus funds enabled these pantries to stock up to meet much of this demand. In Highbridge, Astor Services advanced a cutting-edge program within public schools to assess and treat children’s mental health issues so that these problems do not interfere with their success in school. In Mott Haven, the New York Foundling, with its 140-year history of helping children and families stay together, developed Haven Academy Charter School for at-risk students in the foster care and child welfare system. Its unique model integrates school, family support and after-school enrichment programs that promote confidence, social skills and academic achievement. 6 Annual Report 2009 Since 1982, Part of the Solution (POTS) on Webster Avenue in the Bronx has provided hundreds of thousands of meals each year over 300,000 meals in 2009 alone. However, POTS is about more than meals. A new facility, soon to be completed, will help POTS better integrate all of its “next-step services” to help those it serves move forward in their lives. Meanwhile, Catholic Community Services of Rockland County, in partnership with Good Samaritan Hospital and St. Ann’s Parish, developed a community garden that provides 600 pounds of fresh vegetables to neighbors in need. The threat of homelessness grows as underemployment persists. Catholic Charities receives more than 400 phone calls per day from people fearful of losing their housing. Recently, the New York City Department of Homeless Services showcased Catholic Charities Home Base program in the Bronx to demonstrate how Catholic Charities, through support, advocacy and emergency assistance, stabilizes housing for those threatened with homelessness. Catholic Charities helped more than 3,300 families remain in their homes last year. Strengthening Families and Resolving Crises In addition to decent housing, the main glue that holds a family together is a job. Yet one out of ten people searching for work remains unemployed. To combat this, Catholic Charities developed a targeted new program. More than 25 “Help and Hope” seminars have provided career coaching and support at parishes and other sites in the Hudson Valley. We spearheaded a tax filing volunteer program with other community groups in Dutchess, Ulster and Orange Counties that helped more than 500 low-wage earning families properly file their income tax returns to receive Earned Income Tax Credit refunds. For many families, this amounted to thousands of dollars needed to pay for food, utilities and housing. Supporting the Physically and Emotionally Challenged For more than 50 years, Cardinal Hayes Home in Dutchess County has cared for children with special needs and their families. It added innovative classrooms and a multipurpose center, dedicated last autumn by Archbishop Dolan, to help children with severe physical and developmental disabilities reach their full potential. On Waters Avenue in the East Bronx, Catholic Charities’ Beacon of Hope division is upgrading and expanding its residence. It built an outdoor gazebo and will soon complete a new floor that enables 12 more individuals with emotional problems to live with dignity in a safe, secure home. Welcoming and Integrating Immigrants and Refugees When famine, religious and political prosecution or tribal genocide force people to flee, Catholic Charities helps these refugees find jobs, learn English and adjust to their lives as Americans. Our thoughts and prayers remain with the plight of thousands in desperate need in the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti. Although the headlines have diminished, the needs have not. While Catholic Charities focuses on those in the New York metropolitan area, we have supported the response of Catholic Relief Services. Through the New York State Immigration Hotline, Catholic Charities has fielded thousands of phone calls and provided timely information and advice in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake. Eligible Haitians in the United States are being helped to apply for Temporary Protected Status. In Orange County, we provided legal representation and family assistance to a group of nightshift employees at Stewart International Airport who were discovered without proper documents and apprehended at Christmastime. We helped feed and house their families left behind without a breadwinner. Catholic Charities has long advocated for fair and humane immigration policies. Such policies must recognize and secure borders, provide reasonable legal immigration opportunities, strengthen family unity and, provide a way for undocumented immigrants to earn legal status. We do not support illegal immigration and we do not turn our backs on those who come to us for help even if they are without the proper documents. For more than a century, Catholic Charities has been valued for its dependable track record of caring with integrity and high-quality programs for our vulnerable neighbors. For five years, our Stewarding Mission Project has encouraged 90 Catholic Charities agencies to reinforce standards of governance and managerial accountability. Catholic Charities is proud to maintain accreditation by the philanthropic advisory service of the Better Business Bureau. Failure to adopt comprehensive immigration reform leaves us all struggling with stopgap measures while immigrants seek work to support themselves and their families. They wait, sometimes all day, on cold street corners hoping a contractor will choose them to earn a day’s pay. Catholic Charities joined a coalition in Yonkers searching for a humane way to assist these newcomers. Stewarding Mission During this current economic crisis, Catholic Charities draws on more than a century of experience, a network of neighborhood-based providers, a skilled staff and dedicated volunteers to provide help with dignity and compassion to create hope in the lives of those with often no place else to turn. Archbishop Timothy M. Dolan and Msgr. Kevin Sullivan pitch in with the Catholic Charities Mobile Food Pantry and receive food bank donations from Louis Capelli, chairman, and Steve Hebert, first vice president, Sterling National Bank. www.catholiccharitiesny.org 7 Providing Help. Natalie was nine months pregnant and disabled by a difficult pregnancy when her baby’s father left. Catholic Charities paid her rent and helped sustain her until she was able to return to work. “I didn’t want my baby to come into this world without a roof over his head.” One out of three New York children returns from school to an empty house… 8 Annual Report 2009 Catholic Charities Rebuilds Lives Protecting and Nurturing Children and Youth 3,320 youth participating in sound after-school programs 5,075 children growing and learning in daycare 2,325 children enjoying summer camps 350 children adopted by loving families 6,650 children and teens placed in safe foster care 27,000 youth playing wholesome sports 2,200 women supported during unplanned pregnancies Creating Hope. Pregnancy Care Center in New Rochelle offered emotional, spiritual and material resources to more than 2,500 women and children last year. “We nurture responsible motherhood,” says Executive Director Michelle Morra. www.catholiccharitiesny.org 9 Generosity Takes Many Forms Catholic Charities Philanthropy G enerosity of individuals, corporations and foundations enables Catholic Charities to serve the needy in this environment of increasing demand. Catholic Charities gratefully acknowledges this generosity and, in particular, the volunteer leadership of its fundraising efforts. The New York Times Foundation For nearly a century, The New York Times Foundation has supported the work of Catholic Charities, providing significant funding and publicity by profiling in its annual Neediest Cases Campaign people helped by our federation. Archbishop’s Committee for Charity The Archbishop’s Committee for Charity is a membership of civic, corporate, and philanthropic leaders from the New York Metropolitan area who support Catholic Charities at the request of His Excellency, The Most Reverend Timothy M. Dolan, Archbishop of New York. Members provide financial resources to help solve the problems of New Yorkers in need without regard to religion, race, ethnicity, or ability to pay. Funds raised by the Archbishop’s Committee for Charity help protect and nurture children, feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, strengthen families, support the physically challenged, and welcome immigrants and refugees. Membership begins with an annual gift of $5,000 or more and offers participants special benefits throughout the year based upon the level of commitment. The Stewards of the Archbishop’s Committee for Charity serve as Catholic Charities’ Development Committee, which is co-chaired by Trustees of the Board. The Stewards meet quarterly to provide strategic direction to the fundraising efforts of the Archbishop’s Committee for Charity. Catholic Charities’ Junior Board held its first annual “Casino Night” fundraiser at the Union Square Ballroom to support the St. Nicholas Project that provides critical help for families in need. 10 Annual Report 2009 Junior Board Formally established in February 2008, the Junior Board offers volunteer and philanthropic opportunities to a new generation of caring New Yorkers. Over 200 members engage in social events, networking and volunteer activities that support Catholic Charities in serving those in need in our community. The generosity of the Archbishop’s Committee for Charity members enables tens of thousands of individuals and families to live in greater dignity through the compassionate help of Catholic Charities. Generosity Takes Many Forms Chorus of Angels Giving Club Individuals interested in supporting the work of Catholic Charities can make their annual giving easier by joining the Chorus of Angels Giving Club. Donors become Angels by making gifts through automatic monthly credit-card payments. The Junior Board convenes for its winter meeting. Pictured L-R: Bridget Morrissey, Sean Gorman, Stephanie Bagley, Tim Spelman, Marianna Macri, Mario Bruschi, Christine Keith, Jonna DeSimone, Kathleen McGowan, and Kevin Wells. St. Nicholas Project The St. Nicholas Project carries on the tradition of generosity and charity characteristic of St. Nicholas, the third century Bishop of Myra. While associated with Christmas, St. Nicholas serves the poor throughout the year. Similarly, Catholic Charities helps those in need year round. At Christmastime, donors from our Adopt-A-Family program and volunteers foster a blessed holiday by partnering with Kmart, UPS, and others to provide coats, gloves, blankets and toys to more than 3,200 individuals. Wills and Bequests Catholic Charities welcomes and is grateful to friends and partners whose legacies live on through their compassion and generosity. Charitable bequests should specify that they are for The Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York. Foundations The Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York gives thanks to foundations whose investments in Catholic Charities enable us to provide help and create hope for New Yorkers in need. Business Leaders KPMG LLP has long served as a lead supporter of Catholic Charities and its many initiatives. Spearheaded by Robert P. Garrett, the KPMG Annual Campaign for the Archbishop’s Committee for Charity this year prompted significant donations from more than 100 KPMG partners and matching funds from the KPMG Foundation. Special Events Special events occur throughout the year to support Catholic Charities’ varied programs and efforts. Individuals, corporations, foundations and the Archbishop’s Committee for Charity undergird these events, enabling Catholic Charities to raise additional funds. Events also enhance community outreach and understanding of services we provide. The Club of Champions Tribute Dinner raises money to support the Catholic Youth Organization, (CYO), serving tens of thousands of young people each year through athletic, social, spiritual and cultural activities and services. Funds raised at this annual dinner provide critical resources for our inner-city community centers, parish-based athletic programs, summer camp for disabled and minority youth, teen leadership and youth ministry programs. The Archbishop’s Open annually raises funds to support Catholic Charities’ work and mission. The Archbishop’s Committee for Charity Wall Street Breakfast held annually in the New York Stock Exchange Board Room raises funds and heightens Catholic Charities’ visibility among leaders in New York City’s corporate, banking and business-finance sectors. The Archbishop’s Christmas Luncheon in conjunction with the Ladies of Charity annually raises funds to benefit women and children served by agencies and programs affiliated with Catholic Charities. Creating Hope. T he history of Catholic Charities advanced in 1910 when four hundred delegates from 24 states banded together on the campus of Catholic University of America in Washington DC to found Catholic Charities USA. This year, 2010, marks the Centennial of that momentous event. The full history of Catholic Charities traces back further to before our nation’s founding. In 1727, twelve Ursulan nuns sailed from the safety of their homes in France to the muddy outpost of New Orleans. They established a hospital, an orphanage to care for unwanted children and the first free school teaching colonial girls, former slaves and Native Americans. Most consider this the first formal Catholic charitable effort in the “states.” Similar faith-filled responses to those in need began throughout the United States. The 19th century witnessed thousands of children orphaned in the wake of wars and migration. The Good Shepherd Sisters, the Sisters of Charity, the Sisters of St. Dominic, Fr. Drumgoole and the laity of the St. Vincent DePaul Society, among others, sparked the evolution of what today are among the largest and most vital Catholic childcare agencies that serve vulnerable children who suffer from abuse or neglect. 34 Annual Report 2009 Shortly after the founding of Catholic Charities USA, Catholic charitable efforts in New York were formalized through a special act of the New York State Legislature in 1917 that incorporated The Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New York. This same act established Catholic Charities in the other seven New York State dioceses. Today Catholic Charities in New York proudly celebrates its solidarity with more than 1,700 Catholic charities in communities and neighborhoods in all 50 states. This network forms one of the largest charitable organizations in the nation providing help and creating hope for more than 8.5 million people each year -Catholics and non-Catholics alike. Now more than ever, Catholic Charities throughout the nation come together to ensure that our neighbors receive the help they need to live their lives in dignity. AnnuAl RepoRt 20 09 Providing Help.
