Each month we present new releases, reviews & insightful information
We welcome 2013 with a new partnership
Germany's exclusive distribution
of selected classic labels from the
Bayer Music Group is a network of independent classical labels. On the following pages you will find general
information on each label . As always we provide a soupçon of highlights from each label.
Founded in 1984 and led since the beginning of Rudolf Bayer. In the nearly twenty years publishing large series
of editions and important projects have been realized. Take, for the major project of the Bohemian and Czech
string quartet culture with complete recordings of the quartets by Stamitz, Dvorák, Smetana, Janáček, Martinü
and Alois Haba with Prague Stamitz Quartet, or the number of "Atlantis" with premiere recordings of works of
composers persecuted the first half of the 20th century, the discovery of the vocal quintet resistance culture by
standard-setting recordings of Carus Quintet, or the documentation of the historical series. In addition, Bayer
Records is now the publisher of the largest recorded music variety from the spectrum of women's music / composers and develop in other areas of expertise to the competent forum.
With a large number of ensembles, the publisher is working closely for many years: Wolfgang Gönnenwein and
his Ludwigsburg Festival ensemble, Consortium Classicum, the Rennquintett, the Windsbach Boys Choir, the
Aurelian Sängerknaben Calw, the clarinetist Luigi Magistrelli, Nicol Matt and the Nordic Chamber Choir and
many more CDs, starting with new releases belowRichard Wagner: Siegfried Idyll
Anton Bruckner: String Quintet in F major (arranged for string orchestra
by Hans Stadlmair)
Both composers, Wagner as well as Bruckner, are not known for their take
on chamber music. Nevertheless did they compose a couple of extraordinary pieces.

to Italian music. On this CD the Hungarian oboist Lajos Lencsés assembled a few
works for his instrument by Hungarian composers.

Luigi Nono: Intolleranza 1960
One-act opera in two parts German translation by Alfred Andersch
Libretto with texts of Angelo Maria Rippelino, Julius Fucik, Jean-Paul
Sartre, Paul Eluard, Wladimir Majakowskij, Henri Alleg and Bertolt Brecht
Intolleranza 1960 was Luigi Nono's first work for the opera stage and is a flaming
protest against intolerance and oppression and the violation of human dignity. The
year in the title refers to the time of the work's origin. It was commissioned for the
1969 Venice Biennale by its director Mario Labroca. The first performance was conducted by Bruno Maderna on 13 April 1961 at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice. The
premiere was disrupted by neo-fascists, who shouted "Viva la polizia" during the
torture scene.

The telemann-consort-magdeburg, founded in 1976, can now look back on a decades-old tradition of engaging
itself in the work of Georg Philipp Telemann in his native city Magdeburg. Originally founded as a chamber music
ensemble, the profile of the ensemble changed to a Baroque orchestra at the beginning of the 21st century. Concerts
in Germany and abroad and CD recordings of previously unreleased works like Telemann’s St. Mark Passion are
strengthening the orchestra’s good reputation as well as its claim to develop a unique style for the musical performance of Telemann’s work
und Baroque music in general. The earlier recording of Telemann’s St John Passion 1733 (AMI2601)

The Heidelberger Kammerorchester (= HKO) was created in 1960. Since then the HKO has played regularly in concerts in all continents
(more than 90 countries). The repertoire of the HKO includes mainly compositions from the 18th Century. Beside the popular works of J.S.
Bach and Antonio Vivaldi the orchestra performs works of W.A. Mozart and particularly of Georg Philipp Telemann. Besides also less well
-known composers are considered, like Henry Purcell, Tomaso Albinoni, Johann Pachelbel, Pietro Antonio Locatelli, Arcangelo Corelli,
Henricus Albicastro, William Boyce, Johan Helmich Roman, Jean-Baptiste Lully, Benedetto Marcello, Jean Marie Leclair and many others.

“An ambitious project and the resulting concert programme are reflected on this CD which
also contains a carefully put together and informative booklet with numerous details about the female composers portrayed. The Kammersymphonie Berlin conducted by Jürgen Bruns plays with great engagement
and verve - the bravos from the audience at the end, which can be heard on the recording, are justly deserved. This CD points us down a long-forgotten path of music history and is, above all, commendable for
the recording of the 5th Symphony.” Sven Kerkhoff in “musikansich“

Press releases and audiences reactions are enthusiastic when talking about Alim Qasimov, the DGCD21060

singer from Azerbaijan. This was also the case with the concert which this extraordinary musician gave at the Morgenland Festival Osnabrück, now available on this recording.
Oriental music between the Levant and northwest China is based on modes called maqam, shashmaqam,
muqam or mugham according to the region.
There is no music more complicated and or requiring more virtuosity than the mugam of Azerbaijan. These
mugam have also spread into jazz, opera and symphonic music, something quite unique.
Alim Qasimov is the most outstanding exponent of traditional mugham. For several years now he has been
performing together with his daughter Fargana, who was also his pupil. Concerts with the Kronos Quartet and the cooperation with Yo Yo Ma on his Silk Road Project have brought Qasimov an increasing
audience in the west.
German Record Critics’ Award 4/2010
“One of the greatest voices in the world” - Le Monde
“Qasimov is simply one of the greatest singers alive” - New York Times
“One of the greatest voices of the century: If you want to make a real discovery, listen to Alim Qasimov’s voice. Very occasionally, very very occasionally, a recording arrives that so transfixes that work stops and pleasure, enlightenment and education take
over. Intimate dialogue is one of those. If there is any finer vocal duo performing art music anywhere on the planet right now, please send
the details to the usual address. Intimate dialogue is the sort of stuff to send shivers down your spine.“ Ken Hunt in FRoots
“ ... and the results are spellbinding. ... what I heard on this CD really turned my head. Qasimov and his daughter perform with
what devotees of flamenco often refer to as duende . (The English word “soul” approaches the meaning, but does not come
close enough.) Both of these performers have remarkable voices - remarkable both in terms of range, flexibility, and expression - and when
they get on a roll, it sounds as if their souls are being rent in two. Qasimov, a tenor by operatic standards, has an especially remarkable set
of vocal cords. The highly melismatic vocal style might take some getting used to, but stick with it, and I think you will have a listening
experience unlike any you have had before. ... The booklet notes tell you everything you need to know, and the English translations of the
lyrics are blessedly provided. The live recording is atmospheric, and will involve you even more deeply in the performances.“

”It is the dark side of the Romantic era which is above all invoked by the ‘Symphony for Cello and Orchestra’. Döhl
writes strong and expressive music. The piano concerto ‘Sommerreise’ is much lighter and has a rather happy,
rhythmically-pointed quality. The virtuoso-playful character of the first movement is in stark contrast to the
richly-coloured sounds with which the second and third movements open. Döhl himself speaks in this context of a summer sky-scape.”

“The Bayer Music Group and their label EBS have a good track record when it comes to the music of Max Bruch. Surprisingly
they still issue an LP, although it has been transferred to CD (EBS 6071), which includes the Overture to the opera Die Loreley and
the viola Romance Op.85, while the other two works on it - albeit with different conductor and orchestra - appear on the discs under
review, the Suite on Russian folksongs Op.79b and the First Symphony Op.28. In both discs, the orchestra produces gloriously
sumptuous sounds with fine tone and many stylishly shaped solos...Read more from Christopher Fifield

"Both these works followed hard on the heels of the ending of the Second World War. The Cello Concerto
was begun at the start of 1947 and finished quickly...Those who know and admire the somewhat earlier
Violin Concerto...will perhaps find the Cello Concerto less immediately impressive. The earlier string concerto contains themes of palpable warmth and great lyrical beauty. But the charm of the Cello Concerto increases with each
hearing and there are things in it of real significance." Read more from Jonathan Woolf

Besides "Paradise and the Peri", "Faust Scenes" and "Manfred" this is the first recording of another prominent attempt to reinvent the secular oratorio as a new genus. Not religious, but raised to be the new genre, so Schumann
chooses a "fashionable" fairytale. Compositionally, the work is the Schumann Lieder closer than oratorical traditions.
Instead of recitatives Schumann experimented with a new-song-singing style ariosem and replaced the stereotyped
sequence of recitatives, arias and choruses by large-scale relationships.

Arvo Pärt: Pilgrim’s Song / Magnificat / Summa / Nunc dimittis / Te Deum
Choir Voces Musicales and Tallinn Sinfonietta, conductor Risto Joost
ERP2309
$22.00 rrp
"With the exception of the final Te Deum, each of the works is based on a single musical
idea or texture. There is surprising variety between them. They are all unmistakably Arvo Pärt, of
course, but there are many moods here. Summa, given here in the choral rather than the string version, is flowing
yet serene, Ein Wallfahrtslied is questing and exploratory, albeit in an introverted way, and the Nunc dimittis is –
believe it or not – outright dramatic."Read more from Gavin Dixon

Named after an area of Istanbul in which people of different origins, races, religions and cultures have rubbed
shoulders since time immemorial, the Pera Ensemble was founded in 2005 by two Istanbul musicians, Mehmet
Cemal Yesilcay und Ihsan Özer. Pera concerts combine the musical tradition of Ottoman music (with its vocal
and instrumental virtuosity) with historical and contemporary European music; their performances are informed
by musicological and historical research. The new CD One God presents Psalms and Hymns from Orient and
Occident.

In Venice 1651, Cavalli presented his new opera “La Rosinda” at the Teatro San Apolinaire. It is a story of
love and magic and is one of the least performed 17th century operas, which is a tragedy in itself. Mike Fentross conducts a cast of known and young singers in this spectacular performance. This is a 3cd set and
represents great value. The last recording of La Rosinda was in 1973 so enjoy every moment and indulge
yourself in the 212-page booklet that accompanies this deluxe version.
“the overall dramatic spirit is strong, the words are delivered convincingly and idiomatically, and the continuo accompaniments and ensemble dances are intelligently scored and realised...The strongest all-round vocal performance comes from Emanuela Galli as the opera's
most interesting character...In short, this is an account with all the urgency and variety required to realise this rare work as a drama.”

The Ensemble L’Arte del Mondo, founded in 2004, has made within a short period a name by offering innovative
programs. Together with the Turkish musicians of the Pera Ensemble (Istanbul) L’Arte del Mondo invites us to
join for a musical journey through one of Orient’s most fascinating phenomenons: the harem.
Glittering parties, pleasant fragrances and luxury: oriental harems and Serail have fascinated the imagination of
people all over Europe in the 18th century. During this period, harem ladies received a high profile education in
music, literature, rhetoric and science – they were not only an object of desire, but contributed to intellectual and
artistic education and way of life of the Ottoman princes.
In the Christian Europe nobody knew what was really happening in the harem. This lack of information about one
of the most secret parts of the Palace is the origin of all sort of fantasies and myths – a fascination, which is still
nowadays linked with the Harem. Both occidental works, the ballet music “Les Fêtes du Sérailles” by Christian
Cannabich, here recorded for the very first time and Mozart’s opera “Zaide” deal with this subject.

Britten: Six Metamorphosen after Ovid for Oboe solo Op.49
Miklós Barta, Oboe
Georg Philipp Telemann allowed a broad spectrum in his extensive creations for wind instruments (from his
writings exist not only numerous solo concerti for flute (s) with oboe (d'amore) and violin (viola d'amore)). On
the other hand he used wind instruments in an extensive way in his chamber music. It is no wonder that Telemann wrote also works for unaccompanied flute/oboe. Six Metamorphoses after Ovid op. 49 after a Phantasy Quartet is the most played
chamber music work of Benjamin Britten for oboe. Miklós Barta shows the technical and expressive possibilities of his instrument.

Duo Arcadie - Franziska Markowitsch Mezzo-soprano / Ulrike Merk Classical Guitar
In the Middle Ages members of three world religions lived together in Spain under Arab occupation in a multicultural community; the cultures
exchanged views and profited from one another. In 1492, all non Christian inhabitants were expelled from the Iberian peninsula.
The Sefaradim - as the Jewish refugees call themselves - could often only take their songs with them, as their most important cultural possession. They provide a "missing link" in Spanish musical tradition since the Renaissance and harmonize with the music for vihuela, the traditionally influenced songs by Joaquín Rodrigo, Federico García Lorca’s songs, and even the Siete Canciones by de Falla, like long lost sisters.
The surrealistic imagery and the harsh musical language in the flamenco-flavoured Canciones españolas antiguas by Federico García Lorca
(1898-1936), or the seguidilla, flageolets und lamento basses in the Tres canciones españolas by Joaquín Rodrigo (1901-1999)Manuel de Falla
(1876-1946) added an exotic Spa-nish touch to the French impressionism of his Siete Canciones and, in Canción y Danza No. 1, Antonio Ruiz
-Pipó (1934-1997) paid homage to this typical form in a song with-out words. The "Cantigas de Santa Maria" tell tales from the past. They
were created at the court of Alfons the Wise (1221-1284), in cooperation between Arab and Jewish musicians. It is most probable that Alfons
the Wise composed some of the 400 Marian songs in this collection. Federico Mompou (1893-1987) takes up two melodies and uses them in
Canción y Danza No. 10 for piano and solo guitar. So, typically Spanish proves to be a kaleidoscope from the past and present, from the
Renaissance to the 21st century.
