We're now into the summer doldrums where nothing much happens in the heat treating industry because of holidays and shutdowns throughout the Northern Hemisphere so this issue of The Monty will reflect that-wrong! As a matter of fact we have taken strong measures to make sure that this an exciting issue of The Monty and this includes interviews with some of the top people in the industry around the world. Heat treaters and furnace builders from as far afield as Germany, India, China and Australia each one of which has a story to tell and a passion for the industry. In this issue we also lambast a recent report we ran across about the heat treating industry-not worth the paper it is written on and mention new furnace orders, job changes, heat treat fires and trends in the industry. www.wire-mesh.com 717-848-3620 The Company Behind “The Super Belt” CAN YOUR BELT TOP 21 MONTHS OF BELT LIFE? Our belts track straighter, better resist belt carburization, and provide for an overall longer lasting belt when compared to the competition. Customers have remarked that some of our belts have been nicknamed “The Super Belt” with belt life up to 21 months (hearth) and 5 years (roller hearth). How do we do it? Wire Mesh Products has developed a proprietary material used in the heat treat industry known as 3519Cb Refined Chemistry. This alloy formula takes the standard 35-19Cb and places certain limitations on key elements that are vital to improving overall belt life. Numerous field tests proved the alloy delivered better results than the standard 35-19Cb. The resulting alloy has shown significant improvement in the areas of carburization resistance and creep strength, leading to longer belt life and higher furnace throughput. Representation of a 3rd generation 72 inch wide belt design for a major North American Heat Treater. Belts have been running 3 plus years processing over 10,000 lbs/hour. SUPERIOR MANUFACTURING To take full advantage of the 35-19Cb Refined Chemistry, WMP takes great care in the ‘weaving’ of every belt to specification, otherwise, the many advantages of the Refined Chemistry will be severely diminished. Commercial heat treating giant Bodycote has just release their Interim results for the six months ended 30 June 2012 (available at http://www.bodycote.com/). Bottom line is the company is doing well although recently this has not been reflected in the share price but this is probably due more to the fact that the stock is very thinly traded and the stock markets in general have not been performing particularly well. We have "cherry picked" some of the most interesting points from these results and these can be found below. What we find most interesting is how the recent acquisition of Metal Improvement is proceeding and the investments in Mexico, China, France and London, Ohio. For anybody with an interest in the worldwide heat treating industry we would urge you to see what the only global commercial heat treater is doing and where they see the growth in the future. Bodycote completed the acquisition of the heat treatment business of Curtiss-Wright Corporation at the end of the first quarter for a consideration of £32.6m. This brought nine additional facilities into the Group, one of which was closed as planned and the assets redistributed to other Bodycote sites. (Editors note: the facility closed was in Salem, Ohio which was acquired by Metal Improvement in 2000). The remaining sites offer high margin services across the spectrum of market sectors in the USA, but with a notable presence in aerospace and energy. The fit into the existing Bodycote network is excellent, bringing us into the key aerospace manufacturing hub in Wichita, Kansas. The acquired sites also help to fill in gaps in our capability to service automotive and general industrial customers from Indiana to New Jersey. The business has performed somewhat ahead of our expectations in its first three months of ownership. All parts of the Group continue to focus on operational efficiency and cost control. Excluding employees who joined the Group with the acquisition, average headcount was unchanged from 2011, notwithstanding the continued increase in sales. Headline operating cash flow conversion was 110%2, yielding an operating cash flow of £49.1m. Net capital expenditure remains closely controlled, but did increase to £26.6m (from £20.6m in the first half of 2011), a capital expenditure to depreciation ratio of 1.1 (2011:0.8), in line with our stated intent to invest in capacity to service specific areas of long term demand growth. The investment is primarily in our selected focus technologies, notably in Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) and Speciality Stainless Steel Processes (S3P), together with expanded capacity to service the aerospace market. We expect to achieve accelerating growth from these activities as capacity constraints are eased. Our facilities in Empalme (Mexico) and London (Ohio) are being expanded and a new site is being built in Toulouse (France) as part of the increase in aerospace-orientated capacity. In emerging markets we continue to prioritise China and a new facility is under construction in Jinan. All of these significant investments are backed by long term contracts, including those announced earlier this year with Precision Castparts Corp, Rolls-Royce and ZF Lenksysteme. Reaction to these results was swift and included this from the UK Investors Chronicle. Solar Atmospheres Press Release. "Unique, New 20 Bar Furnace Expands Vacuum Heat Treating Capabilities At Solar Atmospheres Of Western PA . July, 26, 2012 – Hermitage, Pa. - Solar Atmospheres of Western PA recently commenced operation of a new custom-built horizontal 20 bar vacuum furnace (40” wide x 50” deep x 36” high, 3500 max load) at its Hermitage facility. Designed and built by sister company Solar Manufacturing, it is the fastest cooling furnace in the Solar fleet and one of only a few of its kind in the U.S. The excessive pressure and high speed gas velocities of the 20 bar furnace simulates oil quenching. However, using inert gas as an alternative to oil minimizes distortion and provides a much cleaner and greener process. Solar can also better serve customers requiring vacuum carburizing by increasing core hardnesses of large cross-sections. This is a particular benefit to those in the gear industry. President Bob Hill states, “By adding these unique capabilities of the 20 bar quenching to our repertoire, we can now effectively process www.themonty.com currency impact. Yet the heat treatment specialist makes more money from fast growing sectors, like aerospace and energy, than anything else, which should offset turbulence elsewhere – leaving the shares looking too cheaply rated. That said, management admit that 40 per cent of the business – the automotive and general industrial operations in Europe – is softening. French car manufacturers are struggling and Germany was weaker in the second quarter. This has rippled out to Poland and the Czech Republic and China has been a "bit less exciting". Still, these trends have been well-flagged and weaker demand in emerging markets – just 10 per cent of sales – isn't expected to last. Significantly, 60 per cent of the business is in growth mode. Cars and trucks are still selling well in North America and sales to the aerospace and defence industry grew nearly a fifth during the period, with the headline operating profit margin having hit 24 per cent. That trend is unlikely to change given the production ramp-up at Boeing and Airbus. Elsewhere, revenue from oil and gas work was up a third, and North American mining and agricultural equipment made a big contribution, too. Investec Securities has trimmed forecasts for fullyear adjusted pre-tax profit by 4 per cent to £88m, giving adjusted EPS of 34.8p (from £80.9m and 32.1p in 2011).” Ipsen Press Release. This 4140 fully- machined weldment was austenitized at 1575○F +/- 10○F. After the 20 bar nitrogen quench, the resultant hardness was HRC54 with a fully martensitic structure. The part was then tempered to specifications and delivered to the customer with minimal distortion. These results were made possible through many innovative furnace features that improve gas velocities by a factor of three. The newly designed fan and improved gas-flow system minimizes pressure drops and increased gas velocities to nearly 200 MPH. State-ofthe-art technology is incorporated throughout the furnace including an interactive touch screen SolarVac™ 4000 interface and a compact design. The furnace will be commissioned to process to stringent pyrometry specifications for aerospace customers including Boeing. ABOUT SOLAR ATMOSPHERES OF WESTERN PA. We have profiled this truly unique heat treat in the past but it is such a fascinating operation that we couldn't help but take a picture or two during a recent visit. What you are looking at is probably the only commercial heat treater in North America with this size of furnace. Shown in the photos is the owner and founder Mr. Harry Hall and Mr. Ryan Fussell, owner of Southwest Metal Treating of Fort Worth, Texas. We pride ourselves on knowing virtually everybody in the worldwide heat treating industry (especially in North America) and we cannot think of another commercial operation that can handle parts up to 100' long. July 26/2012 Mercer Technologies/Vacuum Furnace Order. "A vacuum furnace supplied to a Northeastern Aerospace Manufacturer with a free work area of 36”w x 48”d x 30”h and was supplied with a surge tank, loader and a turnkey installation. The furnace system has passed the NADCAP certification per AMS 2750D and is running production parts. The new hot zone was constructed using mild steel with 1.500” graphite felt and .040” CFC on the hot face. The front opening of the hot zone was covered utilizing CFC channel. A curved graphite heating element assembly and a graphite hearth assembly complete the hot zone. www.themonty.com Patt Technologies Inc./St. Eustache, Quebec, Canada. Patt was a commercial heat treater located just north of Montreal, Quebec that offered two processes, Ion Nitriding and Coatings both from Rubig furnaces. The company recently went into receivership with offers being taken for the company either as a going concern or on a piecemeal basis. Our latest information is telling us that all of the equipment was purchased by an auction company with the building and business not being purchased (although this is not confirmed). It is a shame to see a well known company such as this in such straights, at one time it was a booming business with one bearing manufacturer alone sending them over $1 million/year in business. It will be interesting to see what happens with the equipment. July 26/2012 Tri-City Heat Treat Company/Rock Island, IL, USA. From the Quad City Times we have a report of a small fire earlier this week at commercial heat treater Tri-City in Rock Island, IL. "Upon arrival to Tri-City Heat Treat, firefighters found heavy smoke coming from the roof and ventilators on the southeast corner of the building. After talking with workers it was determined insulation in the roof was on fire. Most of the fire was extinguished by the sprinkler system. The remainder was extinguished using dry chemical hand extinguishers. The Rock island Fire Department was assisted by the Rock Island Arsenal Fire Department. Fire crews were rotated in and out of the building because of the heat in the building and the high temperature outside. There were no injuries. The cause of the fire, which caused about $10,000 in damage, was due to a malfunction of one of the heat treat furnaces." While a fire is always very unfortunate with damage estimated at $10,000 it must have been a pretty small fire. For more details about Tri-City we would suggest the news item below that we posted almost exactly 1 year ago today. July 25/2012 "Tri-City Heat Treat Company/Rock Island, IL, USA. With the turmoil in worldwide financial markets it is very easy to lose track of the fact that all captive and commercial heat treaters are finding business to be good these days (more on this tomorrow). A good example of this is large, third generation commercial heat treater Tri-City Heat Treat Company in Illinois. There is no reason for us to ramble on about the company itself, details are available at http://tcht.com/. There is also a very interesting article about the history of the company at http://qctimes.com/business/article_254f7b5a-e3e6-11df-85ee-001cc4c002e0.htm, I think the tale you will read is typical of most commercial heat treaters around the world, www.themonty.com Mercer Technologies Inc. and Midwest Vacuum Pumps teamed up to supply the vacuum pumping system for this furnace. India is booming when it comes to heat treating-let's hear what one of the top heat treaters in the country Mr. Gopal Mahadevan, President of HighTemp has to say about his commercial heat treating business and furnace building business and also his comments about the industry in India. July 24/2012 Greeting from us! Picking up from our last meeting – during your visit to India with Dale – that was a memorable one, glad to be in touch with you again. It was nice having you visit and experience India as we see it. 1) Gopal it is a few years now since we visited your plants in India but Dale and I still have very fond memories of that trip. While it was certainly a culture shock from Canada I was extremely impressed with the people and the sights. While I have a very good understanding of Hightemp our readers would certainly like to know the history of Hightemp and how you came to be in both the new furnace business and commercial heat treating. "Hightemp was established in the year 1970, with the objective of designing and manufacturing small Lab Ovens and Drying cabinets. Founded by my Father, the company was based in Mumbai. The technology was completely developed indigenously and initially catered to the Government Institutions, and Public sector undertakings in India. A highly motivated and focused workforce of 180 people worked together taking the company from strength to strength. Our expansion plans to increase our scale of operations; led us to move our operations to Peenya, Bangalore in 1978. On completing my Degree in Electronics Engineering in 1980, I joined the organization. We managed to secure a Technical Licence agreement with THT (now DOWA) for building atmospheric and continuous furnaces in Hightemp. Taking a leaf out of Dowa’s business practice, Hightemp ventured into Commercial heat treatment in the year 1991 by setting up our first furnace for BOSCH in www.themonty.com especially when it comes to the recession of 2009. With the background out of the way we come to the point, Tri City is doing well these days and in an effort to improve turnaround times for their customers they are making a very substantial (well over $1 million USD would be our guess) investment in new equipment. The equipment will consist of 2 new Surface Combustion Batch IQ furnaces with working dimensions of 36" X 72" X 36" with a capacity of 7,000 pounds each. These will be in addition to their current batch furnaces and will at the end of the day increase batch IQ capacity by over 40% to 24,900 pounds. One of these new furnaces will have a top cool option and the equipment is expected to be online by March of 2012. In addition Tri City started in July 2011 updating all the controls on their furnaces to top of the line SSI controls and the new furnaces will also have SSI controls. Control updates will be completed by December of this year. The industry is full of stories such as this one, however everything in overshadowed these days by gloomy government debt issues." August 20/2011 Bangalore. Today, I am pleased to inform you that, we have 62 furnaces in operations across 4 plants in India, serving a host of MNC companies, meeting stringent quality standards. All our plants are ISO, TS, 14001 certified with the Bangalore and Nelamangala facilities being NADCAP certified." "Hightemp’s strength has been its diverse manufacturing portfolio in furnace building, leveraging alliances from world leaders from USA, Canada, UK and Japan. This helped us in meeting diverse market requirements and specific needs of our customers over a wide range of equipment and processes. Our alliance partners include the best in the business like AFC-Holcroft, Vac Aero International, Pyromaitre, TTI Group, Applied Process and, of course, Dowa Thermotech Co. Ltd. The Commercial Heat Treating business is located in close proximity to automotive clusters in India at Bangalore, Chennai, Pune and Delhi, running 24X7 with strict adherence to Cost, Quality and Delivery." 3) So which is your passion-new furnaces or heat treating? I would have to assume it gives you a great deal of insight into the industry building furnaces but also seeing the problems associated with running furnaces. "The two are as closely related like building a car and driving it. Both furnace building and heat treating require completely different skill sets and capability to meet customer requirements. In India, it is expected that a furnace being built must give operate 24x7 to yield maximum output, quality with minimum or nil downtime. This is possible only if our designs and the manufacturing process practiced complement each other to offer our customers trouble free equipment. The furnace manufacturing activity depends on a committed work force with an efficient supply chain ensuring timely receipt of components, free from transportation and logistics problems. As in most cases, the furnace component vendor is located about 2000 kms away and this can hamper operations as the furnace building activities heavily relies on them. The heat treatment business needs robust infrastructure towards power, utilities and man power, which in some locations, may be problematic. Over all, the potential for growth of furnace building activity and heat treating activity is huge, driven primarily by the growth of the auto sector."Click Here to Continue Monday Morning Briefing. So what is worth mentioning today in the worldwide heat treating industry? We see that commercial heat treater Bohler-Uddeholm Thermo-Tech in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada has recently brought on line another gas nitrider. BohlerUddeholm is a worldwide company that offers heat treating services at a number of locations around the world. This particular plant is one of the most impressive commercial operations we have ever seen and has had gas nitriding capabilities for many years. We've said it before but we'll say it again; when asked which heat treating technology is growing www.themonty.com 2) So what can you tell us about the capabilities of the new furnace business and the commercial heat treating side? Hightemp Furnaces/India. We welcome our newest advertiser Hightemp Furnaces of India. Hightemp is both a furnace manufacturing company and a commercial heat treater based in Bangalore, India. On the commercial heat treating side of things Hightemp is one of the largest in India with a total of 62 furnaces in operation spread over 4 locations. Hightemp is also one of the largest new furnace builders in the country and recently took great strides to expand their capabilities when Dowa Furnaces of Japan acquired a majority stake in the company. Please do click on their banner ad to find out more of the company. Tomorrow we will be featuring an interview with the President of the company Mr. Gopal Mahadevan who tells us how the company got started, what are their future plans and also gives us a very good idea about the booming heat treating market in the country. To give you a clearer idea of what Hightemp is capable of we have these photos below showing a typical installation. July 23/2012 www.themonty.com the fastest our answer would be nitriding-both gas and plasma. Our friends at Atmosphere Engineering have been busy recently; "Atmosphere Engineering has successfully converted 12 thermal processing furnaces for Dana's Heavy Axle Mfg facility in Toluca Mexico from endothermic gas to nitrogen methanol atmosphere using the SmartMethT control system and has recently secured an order to upgrade another 12 furnaces before the end of this year. The main driver for the conversion from endothermic gas was to improve the atmosphere quality and processing efficiency within the heat treatment furnace." Can Eng Furnaces of Niagara Falls, Canada has made some personnel changes recently. Alan Van Geyn, formerly President of the company is now Vice Chairman, Mike Klauck becomes the new President and Greg Stanley is now Sales Manager for North America Steel Products. Can Eng is the largest Canadian builder of new furnaces. Bodycote in Empalme, Sonora, Mexico is now Nadcap accredited for vacuum heat treatment, brazing and sintering. While the Mexican heat treat market is large and getting larger by the day there are still few commercial heat treaters in the country that are Nadcap certified. Jeff McLaughlin a furnace rebuilder in Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA is doing well these days. Not only did he just get married recently to the beautiful Trisha (photos further down the page) he will also in the very near future be moving into a brand new 17,000 square foot building which will be just down the street from alloy supplier Wirco. GH Induction Atmospheres in Rochester, NY, USA recently built an Induction hardening system for an automotive supplier. The system will harden, temper and quench ball studs at the rate of 240 pieces/hour. Interesting company GH in that they quite often combine Induction heating and atmospheres in the same system which makes them very unique. Moving to the UK we see that commercial heat treater Alloy Heat Treatment in Dudley UK is quite justifiably boasting about their new aluminum heat treating line which the company claims is the largest in the UK with working dimensions of 103" X 95" X 90". This is how the company describes themselves; "Alloy Heat Treatment AHT company is the largest sub contract heat treater in the UK for aluminum alloys". While the oven is not yet NADCAP approved that is the plan for the future. July 23/2012 "AFC-Holcroft Supplies Mesh Belt Furnaces to Multi-National Tier One Supplier (July, 2012) AFC-Holcroft has received an order for supply of a new Mesh Belt stress relieving furnace, to be installed in Europe. The belt type recirculating atmosphere stress relief furnace will be a near duplicate of a furnace recently purchased by the same customer, which was installed in North America. The equipment will be shipped in sections using standard sea containers. Once in production, the equipment will be used for stress relieving of vehicle pistons. About AFC-Holcroft: AFC-Holcroft is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of heat treating furnaces. The legacy companies that comprise AFC-Holcroft have a combined 225+ years of thermal processing experience. For more information, contact media@afcholcroft.com" Ipsen/Gleason Cutting Tools. "Ipsen has shipped two 6 bar TurboTreaters® to Gleason Cutting Tools Corporation located in Loves Park, Ill. The units are designed for a maximum operating temperature of 2500ºF and are capable of quenching in nitrogen up to 6 bar absolute pressure. Standard features include a 2-inch thick carbon composite/graphite felt hot zone. As the furnaces will be used for hardening and tempering, the units were purchased without a diffusion pump and will use convection assisted heating to 1600ºF. The use of convection significantly reduces cycle times. These TurboTreaters are equipped with the newly standardized industrial VPN router, a modem installed so software support personnel can remotely perform diagnostics. In addition to hardening and tempering, the energy-efficient TurboTreater is ideal for brazing, solution anneal and stress relieving applications, while operating with a high pressure cooling system for fast quenching with 360º cooling uniformity. Its patented gas quenching system design reduces gas consumption up to 40% without sacrificing its high-speed cycle time and reduces floor space www.themonty.com AFC-Holcroft/European Mesh Belt Furnace Order. It is relatively unusual for furnace builders to build and ship large furnaces from Europe to North America or visa versa but that appears to be the case here. July 20/2012 Heat Treating Reports. Recently an acquaintance in the industry sent me a report he recently received from a company by the name of XXXX XXXX. This was entitled 2012 "Premium Report on Metal Heat Treating" and was billed as a report on the size of the heat treating industry in the US with a summary of the major players. Never have I seen a more worthless report in my life! Let's back up though and tell this tale from the beginning. Every supplier to the industry would love to have a nice concise list of every captive and commercial heat treater in North America preferably with names and contact information. However after 34 years in the industry I have yet to see such a list that was worth the paper it was printed on. A listing of commercial heat treaters is reasonably easy to come up with, as a matter of fact our friends at Industrial Heating have a good list on their website. However no such list exists for the captive heat treating industry for the simple fact that captive heat treats are just a small portion of the manufacturing process for any manufacturer and there is very little incentive for a manufacturer to spread this information around. For years we have been asked if we sell our mailing lists (which we don't do) so at the end of the day probably the most complete lists are held by long established furnace builders such as AFC-Holcroft, Ipsen, Aichelin, Surface and a host of others who have no desire whatever to share this information. So getting back to the beginning of our story some industry suppliers end up buying reports out of sheer desperation and as a way of hopefully gleaming some useful information. The report that we read claims the heat treating industry in the US in 2011 was a little over $5 Billion/USD, with the average heat treater having sales of a little under $8 million USD with an average of 34 employees-all of these figures we violently disagree with. Let’s get to the best part though; included in the report was a list of what we assume are supposedly the largest heat www.themonty.com requirements, making it the best solution for your most demanding heat treatment projects. July 19/2012 Southwest Metal Treating Corp./Fort Worth, Texas. Over the past couple of weeks we had brief profiles of two commercial heat treaters in the DFW area of Texas now on to another one Southwest Metal Treating in Fort Worth. Owned and operated by Mr. Ryan Fussell it is worth mentioning how close the heat treating ties are in Texas. Ryan's uncle John Fussell is owner of Q-Tech Heat Treating and Ryan's cousin (or second or third cousin not sure which) Brad Luce is part owner of Modern HT another large heat treater in the area. The relationships between heat treaters in Texas go even further than this but it would take a few pages to go through them all so that is a tale for another day. The first thing that strikes a visitor about Southwest is the vast area it covers, 7 or 8 acres with various buildings spread out around the property each dedicated to a different type of heat treating, batch IQ's, vacuum, carbottoms and Induction. Two of the photos below show very recent additions to the company; one of a very impressive 2 bar vacuum furnace which has just been added (standing in front is Gord Montgomery on the left, Martin Leos, Plant Manager and the proprietor himself Ryan Fussell on the right). The second a large gas fired carbottom which is just about to enter production. Another photo below shows the shot www.themonty.com treaters in the country (by the way it is almost impossible to tell whether this report is only commercials, captives or both-this was never clarified another glaring defect in the report). Of the 20 or so names on the list over half we did not recognize and of the ones we recognized Paulo Products was towards the head of the list with sales under $20 million/year. Paulo is a fine company that we have listed as the third largest commercial in the country but their sales are far higher than this and there was no mention at all of Bodycote (far and away the largest), or Bluewater (clearly the second largest). How you can put together a report which supposedly is an in depth look at the size of the industry and miss most of the largest players is beyond me. Kind of like talking about car sales and not mentioning Toyota, GM or Ford. Conclusion: It only cost this fellow a few hundred dollars for the report but at the end of the day that few hundred would have been better spent at a racetrack. People most of these reports are filled with fancy verbiage and culled from a few government statistics available to everybody-don't waste your money on them. How did you ever get involved in the heat treating industry? "Yes, Wiesbaden at night is always good fun and I also enjoy that every year. Well, I got involved in the heat treating industry since I was a kid. My father founded the company over 30 years ago and anytime I wanted to get something like for example a new bike, I had to work during the holidays and earn my own money. So I started by cleaning the workshop and step by step I was allowed to do other work. Then I did an apprenticeship as an industrial mechanic before I started my studies as a mechanical engineer. And today I run the business together with my wife Natasha. So I could say that heat treatment or better said industrial furnaces have always been and will be in the future an important part of my life." 2) Your company ROHDE Schutzgasöfen GmbH would appear to be quite well known in Europe but less so in North America and I think of ROHDE mainly for pit furnaces but this impression could be incorrect. Perhaps you could give us some details about ROHDE? "This is correct. As we are a family business our main focus in the past has been on the European market. But the last couple of years we started to get more international and the North American market is also interesting for us. We try to get known better and that's also the reason why we attend the FNA and Heat Treat Shows in the US. I believe we are mainly known for pit furnaces as we are very innovative in that field and maybe even the technology leader. We constantly develop in that area and make improvements. For example our "big furnace" which is 5,2m x 5m is a completely new construction in pit design and this project was a great challenge for us. And we managed that challenge as the furnace is now running. Besides pit furnaces we also manufacture chamber furnaces, furnaces for special processes and salt recovery units. Basically I can say that our product range includes every furnace with a retort." 3) Every furnace builder in the world is eyeing China, India and other developing countries as the areas where most growth in heat treating will be coming from. Do you share this view and if so how are you expanding your presence in these areas? "I do agree that these are definitely growing markets. We do not expand our presence in China, but in India we have a representative as it is not possible to handle that from Germany. We believe that in the future India will be an important market for us. But we do not want to establish production sites in one of these countries. We deliver our products worldwide but we want to guarantee "quality made in Germany". Click Here to Continue www.themonty.com ROHDE Schutzgasöfen GmbH/Interview. As part of an ongoing series of interviews with very interesting heat treaters and heat treat suppliers around the world we have this one from Jörn Rohde, President of furnace builder ROHDE Schutzgasöfen GmbH in Germany. What makes this most interesting is that German furnace builders rank amongst the largest in the world and export around the globe meaning their influence is felt in the heat treating industry in most countries. July 17/2012 Monday Morning Briefing. Our recent mention about Dan Herring's new book about vacuum heat treating did not meet with everybody's approval. Bill Jones CEO, Solar Atmospheres Inc. took offense at our levity. We would not argue that we expect that this book will be a valuable addition to the vacuum heat treating industry. "Gord's announcement concerning Dan Herring’s book is more than trite. This new book on Vacuum Heat Treating is a rather complete work on vacuum, vacuum furnaces, and more important vacuum heat treatment applications. It is a most important read for anyone practicing today in the field and will be a good reference book for years into the future". William R. Jones, FASM, CEO, Solar Atmospheres Inc." "Burgess-Norton selected United Process Controls (UPC, www.group-upc.com) to upgrade the pusher furnace controls at its powder metal plant in Geneva, Illinois, USA . UPC supplied Protherm-based controls for an Ipsen pusher furnace. The new controls use the Protherm 600 to monitor and control furnace line operations including temperature, carbon potential, push time with temperature and atmosphere tolerance, quench oil temperature, washer temperature, and draw furnace temperature. An independent chart recorder was also interfaced to the Protherm 600 for automatic redundant storage of the backup archives. This particular furnace includes the optional Hydrogen Partial Pressure system and Technical Service Package, www.themonty.com from a commercial heat treater in the US we have these thoughts; "Your comment Gord reference vacuum carburizing: Like many vacuum processes vacuum carburizing is growing modestly but steady among the select few commercial heat treat companies that have taken the challenge. Our Solar Souderton plant has been running VC for five years. VC sales for 2012 are modestly projected at $1 million, and represents approx 6% of Souderton's gross sales. 25% of applications are centered on components for race cars, valve train, cam shafts, and gearing. Aerospace gearing and engine components accounts for nearly 50%. The balance of 25% comes from general commercial HT and paid R&D projects. The good thing about R&D is this represents additional growth opportunities. We are running VC in our Hermitage, Pa. and Fontana, Calif. plants also but at much lower production rates, as their technology is currently centered on other production opportunities. Although 5 years represents a long learning cure most of our growth is in 2011 and 2012. From this view point our growth is exponential. William R. Jones, CEO. Solar Atmospheres". July 16/2012 Q-Tech Heat Treat/Dallas, Texas. Our friends at commercial heat treat Q-Tech Heat Treat in Dallas, Texas are doing well these days. Like most captive and commercial heat treaters in the great state of Texas they are hard pressed to keep up with demand but they are taking steps to increase capacity and have recently doubled their roller hearth capacity and in addition have added more atmosphere equipment. Like most commercials in Texas this is a family owned business and the owner John Fussell is a life long heat treater who has grown up in the heat treating industry. It is no surprise that virtually every company in Texas lives and dies by the oil and gas industries and these are the boom times with all suppliers to the energy industry expecting the good times to continue for at least a few more years. Back in March we had a number of photos of commercial heat treater Texas Heat Treating and their brand new operation in Fort Worth, Texas. It is fascinating to see the plant coming together and the great strides the company has made in www.themonty.com Vacuum Heat Treatment/Dan Herring. Well known speaker and Heat Treat consultant Dan Herring has written a griping tale of sex and intrigue in the vacuum heat treating industry. Ok we're sure it is gripping but with little romance or intrigue this being the heat treating industry. As Dan has always had an excellent way of explaining things in a way that all can understand we have no doubt but that this will be a very usefully tool for the industry. July 13/2012 "Texas Heat Treating Inc./Fort Worth, Texas. It is relatively unusual to see "greenfield" commercial heat treat operations set up in North America, we would estimate that there is no more than a handful every year but you are looking at just such an animal. Texas Heat Treating in Round Rock, Texas has been around for quite a while and has a very large operation but their plant in Fort Worth is brand new and just entering production (more about Texas Heat Treating in Round Rock in the next few days). Look at the pictures below and we'll tell you what you are seeing; three out of a planned 5 batch IQ lines each with working dimensions of 36" X 72" X 36" with associated equipment. What you are not seeing are several vacuum furnaces, a gas nitrider, and two large pit carburizing furnaces-some of this equipment is already on site, some will be delivered shortly. Folks this represents a major investment on the part of Texas Heat Treating and this was NOT done on a shoestring, everything is top notch. A nice facility which represents the booming heat treat industry in Texas and a credit to Buster Crossley, President of the company. March 22/2012" Ray Reynoldson. Earlier this week we mentioned how heat treat innovator Ray Reynoldson of Australia had passed away. Base upon the number of comments we received Ray was known around the world. The most eloquent comments came from heat treat consultant David Pye. July 12/2012 "Hello Gordon, This is David once again (Pye Met) (new website at www.heattreatmentexperts.com). I have known Ray since about 1980 He and I were almost the same age. (He was about 3 months older than I) Of course it was through fluidized beds that I got to know Ray. I was present when closed it up and moved to Aalberts Industries in Venlo ( I visited him and John Aalberts together there and run one of the plants (with fluid beds) up in Groningen for John for a short time. Ray was a very personable and gentle person, but also very firm. His metallurgical knowledge was superb, and he was a teacher by example and by his knowledge. I lost touch with him for a short time when he returned www.themonty.com just the past couple of months. (our previous news item is below). A visit earlier this week gave us the opportunity to see the fourth brand new 36 X 72 X 36 batch IQ installed and running, a pit for the fifth which will be arriving in September and an enormous pit dedicated to a very large Nitrex gas nitrider and two pit carburizing furnaces which will be arriving shortly. Well Thursday July 12 is Jim’s 50th birthday and this is how his brother KC would like the world to see him. I have known Jim for a long time and can attest to the fact that Jim treats his body like a temple, a temple to which all are invited. July 12/2012 Nakal/Akademi Metalurji. Nakal is a Russian company which offers catalytic gas nitriding equipment, a nitriding process which claims to offer enormous advantages over conventional gas nitriding including vastly reduced cycle times. The company has numerous units in operation in Europe and have made some progress in North America (their partner in NA is AFC-Holcroft). In April of this year they conducted tests for a heat treater in Istanbul, Turkey by the name of Akademi Metalurji who had recently purchased a CGN 10.15/7 unit. Tests were very successful and the furnace was recently delivered with a fully automated nitriding control system. We would expect that we will be hearing more about Nakal and catalytic gas nitriding equipment in the future. July 11/2012 www.themonty.com to Australia. But picked up again because of my relationship (license agreement in South Africa) with Stein Atkinson Stordy. Over the years, our friendship really developed and I worked with Ray on a number of projects both in South Africa, USA and in Russia (and with Andrew Fitchett, his partner) The world of heat treatment and metallurgical processing has lost one of Gods gentlemen. What a great pity that all of his knowledge has gone with him, however he will be remembered by students in Melbourne's university and at Deakin University as being a farmer (planting seeds in students minds which are metallurgical seeds) (Some will grow into Ray's technology continuation). He also had a wonderful great passion for horses. He loved his horses and so did his family. I give thanks to Rays family for allowing Ray to develop his mind and passion for metallurgy and heat treatment and for being there with Ray. I will most certainly miss my long chats on skype together with Ray. We have lost a gentleman in the truest sense of the word." Bodycote/France. July 11/2012 www.themonty.com AFC-Holcroft/Bodycote. "(July, 2012) Bodycote Thermal Processing has recently purchased an AFC-Holcroft E-Z Series 13500 cfh endothermic generator for installation in their plant in Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA. The modular design of the E-Z Series generator enables multiple units to be integrated for higher capacity atmosphere generation. In this case, an array of (3) 4,500 cfh systems are integrated together to provide the needed capacity while requiring less floor space than 3 stand-alone units. The atmosphere produced by the E-Z Series generator, when enriched with natural gas, is suitable for gas carburizing and carbon restoration of the low and medium carbon steels. The addition of ammonia to the atmosphere will create a suitable atmosphere for carbonitriding. The atmosphere, as generated, may be used for clean annealing, normalizing and hardening of all carbon steels. It is with great sadness that we wish to advise that Ray Reynoldson passed away on Wednesday 4 July 2012, following a sudden stroke. He was aged 72. Born and raised in Melbourne Australia, Ray trained as a metallurgist at RMIT in Melbourne, before moving to the United Kingdom where he worked for many years. In the early 1980’s he returned to Australia and was General Manager for Stein Atkinson Stordy (Australia), before establishing, Quality Heat Treatment. After many years in the furnace and commercial heat treatment world, he formed HARD Technologies, where he continued his passion, developing new processes for fluidised bed furnaces. Ray is best known in the industry for his work with fluidised bed furnaces. There is probably no one in the industry that knew more about heat treatment in fluidised bed furnaces than Ray – he was known internationally as the expert in his field. Over the years, he was involved with fluidised bed furnace technology, including both the manufacture of the equipment and research and development of new processes. Ray holds many international patents and was a regular presenter at technical conferences (most recently at Extrusion Technology conference in Florida in May this year). So passionate was he about fluidised bed furnaces, that he even wrote a book on the subject and had it published by the ASM. This sudden loss is a great shock to his family, friends and colleagues around the world. I am sure that everyone in the industry would wish to pass on their respects and condolences to Ray’s family - his wife Mavis, their children Mark, Nicola, Emma and Justine and their families and the grandchildren - Sally, Lauren, Abbie, Xander, Indianna, Oscar, Isabella, Max and Chloe. It is with regret that we mention the passing of Ray Reynoldson. To the comments below I will add that Andrew has not overstated the case-Ray was a fanatic on fluid bed furnaces and probably knew more about them than anybody in the world. Ray certainly did not slow down as the years passed, just a couple of months ago we spoke with Ray about a new idea he was promoting-coatings on furnace alloy components to increase the life. July 10/2012 1) Kent you and I have met a couple of times over the years but I am sure our readers would be very interested in knowing how you got started in the heat treating business? "As a Chinese born in the 1970’s, along with a period of about 20 years of rapid developments of China, I’d been driven by the idea of starting my own business. After graduating from Fudan University Graduate School in 2000, I was looking for opportunities, until I met Shanghai Heat Treatment(SHT) at the end of 2005, then bought it out in August 2006. Before buying SHT, I looked into how BODYCOTE bought and merged companies throughout the world, therefore I set up a vision that SHT is going to become a first-class commercial heat treatment company worldwide." 2) So what can you tell us about your company Shanghai Heat Treatment? I know that you now have several locations in China and have been growing at a very fast pace but I for one would be interested in knowing more about the plants, what capabilities they have and what type of products you typically run. "SHT has 8 plants in China now and we have a plans to add 2 or 3 new plants to our list every year for the next 5 years." www.themonty.com Heat Treating China. We have all heard about the phenomenal growth in China over the past few years and we are really pleased to be able to offer you an interview with a fellow that entered the commercial heat treating market in that country in 2005 and has since grown his company Shanghai Heat Treatment into a 8 plant location with extremely ambitious plans for the future. Having been to China several times and having met the owner of Shanghai Heat Treatment on my most recent visit I have to say that Kent Zhou is a very intelligent and ambitious fellow who is going to grow the company into a very substantial heat treat in the years to come. July 9/2012 3) I have been told by various commercial heat treaters in China that the average commercial shop is doubling in size every two years. Would you agree that this is true or is this overly optimistic? Ipsen/Peter Lankes. From Ipsen's website http://www.ipsen.de/en/home/ we have an interesting story of how Peter Lankes, Chairman of the board recently left the company. Also of interest is the company's sales in 2011. For our North American readers 166 million Euro is approximately $203 million USD putting the company probably neck and neck with new furnace builder Aichelin of Austria in terms of sales. July 9/2012 "Kleve, 11 June 2012: The Ipsen Group, leading global supplier of heat treating systems, continues its growth story. After a sales increase by 35% to 166 Mio Euro in the past year 2011, the actual business year 2012 shows further growth. Till end of May the Group reports again considerably increased order bookings, even though the Euro-crisis has influenced the general economic environment. This growth story will be continued consequently with a main focus on the international business. At Ipsen International GmbH, the German Group company, Peter Lankes, so far Chairman of the Board, has left by mutual consent the company on June 4, 2012 after 20 successful years at Ipsen. Different opinions about the future strategy of the company were the reason. For the time being, Peter Fleischmann, the Group's CFO, takes over the functions of Peter Lankes. "We thank Peter Lankesfor his long-term engagement and his valuable contribution to the success of Ipsen International GmbH as well as the Ipsen Group and wish him success and personally all the best for the future" says Dr. Hendrik Grobler, the Chairman of the Ipsen Group. Ipsen has production facilities in Europe, America and Asia as well as agencies in 34 countries. This www.themonty.com "Doubling in size every 2 years is not representative. In some regions of China, such as the Yangtze River Delta, with the rapid development of a few high-level heat treatment companies, this might be the case but it is not typical." Click Here to Continue network provides the customers worldwide with an optimal service. Main customer branches are aviation and automotive industry, mechanical engineering and medical engineering as well as energy production. In Asia, Ipsen achieves the highest growth rates. In the top modern Ipsen furnaces' steel and other materials are hardened in different processes to meet highest requirements in motors, gears and power stations." Flanged Radiant Tubes. We are always on the lookout for new ideas and one we ran across recently caught our attention-flanged radiant tubes. Typically most atmosphere heat treating furnaces use horizontal radiant tubes installed from the back of the furnace, a design that goes back many years and while the design works well one potential drawback especially with batch IQ furnaces is room to replace the tubes. Picture if you will a batch IQ furnace with either U-tubes or Trident tubes 6' long-obviously the furnace itself must sit at least 6' away from a wall to allow replacement of the tubes. This is a real waste of space (by the way AFC-Holcroft went with vertical tubes a number of years back and while there are other advantages besides space this is one of the pluses. Other furnace builders have followed suit since that time.) What we ran across recently are flanged tubes joined by a 1/8" graphite gasket bolted tight with 316SS hardware with nuts tack welded to ensure they wouldn't work loose. The idea www.themonty.com Edwards Vacuum. We ran across a very competent fellow yesterday, Dave Sobiegray who bears the illustrious title of Marketing Sector Manager, Industrial Vacuum with Edwards Vacuum. In the vacuum heat treating world Edwards and their brand name Stokes is probably the best known name around when it comes to vacuum pumps. With a little prodding (actually not much) Dave shared some interesting information with us about what Edwards is up to these days. First off the company has just moved into a brand new 60,000 square foot facility in Niagara Falls, NY, North American Headquarters which will have over 200 employees and will handle sales and service (conceptual drawing below). Second the company had their best ever sales year in 2011 and 2012 is shaping up to be even better. Third the company works with every major new vacuum furnace builder in North America which is no surprise. Dave did want us to point out a couple of things; Stokes is offering a 45% discount on a new vacuum pump with any return of a genuine Stokes unit and that also the company is geared up for the upcoming FNA show in Nashville and is hoping to have an operating unit in their booth. As a final point I believe that we convinced Dave to send us regular tidbits of information about pump maintenance, what type of pump to pickall with no sales pitch attached. July 6/2012 Heat Treatment Australia. Recently we did an interview with Ms. Karen Stanton one of the owners of commercial heat treat Heat Treatment Australia the results of which are below. Unfortunately this was not done in Australia-this trip will have to wait for another day. Karen gives us a good idea about the Australian heat treating market, the obstacles they face being in a relatively small isolated market and where the business is heading. July 4/2012 1) Karen it is a sign of the times that while you and I have actually done some business together and have exchanged e-mails many times over the years I have yet to meet you in person or even speak with you for that matter. So while I know of your company Heat Treatment Australia I really know almost nothing about your background. How did you happen to get started in the heat treating field? "Heat Treatment Australia is a family company started by my father in the early 70s. My brother, Norm Tucker, and I took over ownership approximately 15 years ago. We are still very much a family oriented business with other family members and partners working in the business. Since taking ownership Norm and I have gone from one site in Brisbane to three sites across Australia, including additional sites Sydney and Melbourne." 2) My impression is that Heat Treatment Australia is the largest commercial in the countryis this impression correct and what can you tell us about the company in terms of capabilities and size? "HTA maintains sites in Brisbane, Sydney & Melbourne with a total staff of approximately 60. We provides services to all geographical areas within Australia as well as Asia & USA." 3) Most people's impression of Australia was probably shaped by Crocodile Dundee all those years ago (I am dating myself). I realize that this is only a small part of Australia so my question is how much actual heat treating both captive and commercial is there in the country? Do any estimates exist about the size of the market in terms of sales/year? Combined with this how many commercial heat treaters are there in Australia ? "Heat treating is a relatively small, and rather undefined market in Australia. There are a total of approximately 25 commercial heat treatment shops across the country. No research or studies have been undertaken that capture the size of the market or the extent of captive shops. Essentially we fly blind and need to justify all new investment via our own research and market knowledge." ...Click Here to Continue www.themonty.com behind this concept is that half of the tubes are installed in the furnace with the other half bolted on afterwards meaning a lot less space required to replace the tubes. While this is a relatively low temperature application it appears to be working well. Obviously this is not the perfect situation but if space is crucial it is an interesting concept. Another possible bonus is that generally tubes burn up at the end, with this idea it is quite possible that only part of the tubes would need to be replaced down the road. "Wisconsin Oven designed and manufactured a gas fired industrial draw batch oven with a powered load table for a company that repairs and refurbishes generators and steam or combustion turbines. The draw batch oven is used for stress relieving stainless steel shafts used in turbines after a welding process. The Wisconsin Oven stress relieving oven replaced the customer’s previous oven which could not maintain the required temperature tolerance or required production capacity. The new stress relieving oven provided a faster heat up rate and increased production capacity along with tighter temperature tolerances. The heat treating oven has basket dimensions of 5’0” wide x 7’6”high x 5’0” long and a maximum operating temperature of 1400º F. The batch oven was designed with the capacity to heat 2,000 pounds of steel from 500° to 1300° F within six (6) hours when the oven is preheated. Wisconsin Oven designed the draw batch oven with a horizontal sliding door instead of a vertical lift door due to the height restrictions at the customer’s facility. The powered load/unload table was rated at a capacity of 2,000 pounds. The stress relieving oven is fabricated with 4” of insulation in a CAN style construction. The inner shell and ductwork are fabricated with 18 gauge 309 stainless steel. The heating system features a 750,000 BTU per hour air heat burner including a motorized gas control valve, flame detector and flame relay with alarm horn. The recirculation system provides combination air flow and utilizes a 15,000 CFM @ 15 HP blower. The majority of the air is delivered under the work to flow vertically upward past and through the product to provide even heating and maximize temperature uniformity. The stress relieving oven has a UL certified NEMA 12 control enclosure with IEC style motor starters, push buttons, and pilot lights. The customer required a 9-point temperature uniformity of +/-20° F at 1365° F. The temperature for the draw batch oven is controlled by a digital West Pro-VU programmable controller and recorded by a Honeywell DR4300 10” circular chart recorder."
