The package looks at the general climate of Brazil and some of the potential climate change impacts there. https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?ui=2&ik=0fa6b050cb&view=pt&search=inbox&msg=15651cc849de042f&siml=15651cc849de042f 1/7 8/4/2016 Gmail - [phillycusp] Climate Matters: Climate and Rio 2016 Title: JPG • Transparent PNG No Title: JPG • Transparent PNG Title: JPG • Transparent PNG No Title: JPG • Transparent PNG Title: JPG • Transparent PNG No Title: JPG • Transparent PNG Title: JPG • Transparent PNG No Title: JPG • Transparent PNG The area of Brazil is about the same as the contiguous U.S. Most of Brazil has a tropical climate, but parts of the southern region are more subtropical. The Olympic Games are being held during the dry and cool season in Rio, as August is the end of winter in the Southern Hemisphere. The average temperature and rainfall in August in Rio make it similar in climate to February in Miami. Its role in the climate system is important, as the Amazon rainforest accounts for 25% of the carbon dioxide absorbed by land each year. Deforestation rates in the Amazon have decreased in the last decade, but the total area continues to decline, with an area the size of Delaware lost in each of the last 5 years. Global and regional climate models indicate the Amazon will become drier and hotter through the century, further stressing the rainforest. Meteorologist Sean Sublette examines Brazil’s climate >> In Rio and most of the country’s Atlantic coast, both temperature and precipitation are projected to climb with climate change. Heavier downpours could worsen the water quality in Rio, as heavier rain leads to more pollutant runoff into waterways, similar to what happened in Florida this summer. Once the rain ends, the leftover stagnant water can create favorable conditions for mosquitoes to thrive and raise the risk of the spread of mosquitoborne illnesses like Zika. https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?ui=2&ik=0fa6b050cb&view=pt&search=inbox&msg=15651cc849de042f&siml=15651cc849de042f 4/7 8/4/2016 Gmail - [phillycusp] Climate Matters: Climate and Rio 2016 SOCIAL SHARES Rio in August is a lot like Miami in February, and here's why bit.ly/2atCtnrK via @climatecentral #climatematters Brazil may make you think hot and steamy, Rainforest loss in Brazil continues, but but it does have some it’s not quite as bad as cold spots it used to be bit.ly/2aszjgJ via @climatecentral bit.ly/2aqanIQ via @climatecentral #climatematters #climatematters Climate change could bring more rain to Rio, affecting water quality bit.ly/2aGtOhp via @climatecentral #climatematters The Green Passport campaign, developed with UNEP and the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Organising committee, is encouraging sustainability https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?ui=2&ik=0fa6b050cb&view=pt&search=inbox&msg=15651cc849de042f&siml=15651cc849de042f 5/7 8/4/2016 Gmail - [phillycusp] Climate Matters: Climate and Rio 2016 and providing tips for those attending the Games in Rio, with the goal of minimizing environmental impact.
